A five-dimensional seesaw framework is analyzed with the lepton-number-violating propagator of bulk right-handed neutrinos. That can bypass summing up the effects of heavy Majorana particles whose masses and wavefunctions are not exactly known. The propagator method makes it easier to evaluate the seesaw-induced neutrino mass for various boundary conditions of bulk neutrinos and in a general background geometry, including the warped extra dimension. It is also found that the higher-dimensional seesaw gives a natural framework for the inverse seesaw suppression of low-energy neutrino masses.
In the 5D theory in which only 3 generation right-handed neutrinos are in the bulk, the neutrino flavor mixings and the mass spectrum can be constructed through the seesaw mechanism. The 5D seesaw is easily calculated just by a replacement of the Majorana mass eigenvalues, M_i, by 2 M_*tan(h)[πRM_i] (M_*: 5D Planck scale, R: compactification radius). The 5D features appear when the bulk mass, which induces the 4D Majorana mass, is the same as the compactification scale or larger than it. Depending on the type of bulk mass, the seesaw scales of the 3 generations are strongly split (the tan-func…
We show the universal seesaw in the extra dimension setup, where three extra vector-like fields exist in the 5D bulk with heavy masses. We take the framework of the left-right symmetric model. The universal seesaw formula is easily obtained as a replacement of the vector-like mass in 4D case M_i to 2 M_* tan[pi RM_i] (M_*: 5D Planck scale, M_i: vector-like bulk mass, and R: compactification radius). The smallness of Dirac neutrino mass can be naturally explained in the 5D setup. We also show the Majorana neutrino case.
A Mellin-type representation of the graviton bulk-to-bulk propagator from Ref. 1 in terms of the integral over the product of bulk-to-boundary propagators is derived.
We study the gauge dependence of the neutrino mass renormalization in a two Higgs doublet model, that is extended with one singlet seesaw neutrino. This model gives only one light neutrino a mass at tree level, while the second light mass is generated at loop level via the interaction with the second Higgs doublet. At one loop level, one neutrino stays massless. We use multiplicative renormalization constants to define counterterms. The renormalized mass parameters are defined as the complex poles of the propagators, using the complex mass scheme for mass renormalization. With this setup, we a…
The Randall-Sundrum model with gauge fields and fermions in the bulk has several attractive features including the gauge coupling unification, a candidate for the dark matter, and an explanation for the hierarchical Yukawa couplings. In this paper, we point out that the 1st Kaluza-Klein modes of right-handed neutrinos may be produced at colliders, for both Dirac and Majorana neutrino cases. Furthermore, we can see whether the neutrino masses are Dirac type or Majorana type from the mass spectrum of KK particles.
We show how the seesaw mechanism for neutrino masses can be realized within a five dimensional (5D) warped geometry framework. Intermediate scale standard model (SM) singlet neutrino masses, needed to explain the atmospheric and solar neutrino oscillations, are shown to be proportional to M_Pl\exp((2c-1)πkR), where c denotes the coefficient of the 5D Dirac mass term for the singlet neutrino which also has a Planck scale Majorana mass localized on the Planck-brane, and kR~11 in order to resolve the gauge hierarchy problem. The case with a bulk 5D Majorana mass term for the singlet neutrino is b…
We discuss the leptonic flavor structure generated by a brane shifted extra dimensional seesaw model with a single right handed neutrino in the bulk. In contrast to previous works, no unitarity approximation for the $3 \times 3$ submatrix has been employed. This allows to study phenomenological signatures such as lepton flavor violating decays. A strong prediction of the model, assuming CP conservation, are the ratios of flavor violating charged lepton decay and Z decay branching ratios which are correlated with the neutrino mixing angles and the neutrino mass hierarchy. Furthermore, it is pos…
The seesaw-induced neutrino mass is discussed in a generic class of curved spacetime, including the flat and warped extra dimensions. For Majorana masses in the bulk and on the boundary, the exact forms of seesaw-induced masses are derived by using the Kaluza-Klein mode expansion and the lepton number violating correlator for bulk fermion. It is found that the neutrino mass is determined without the knowledge of wave functions and whole background geometry when the metric factor is fixed on the boundary, e.g. by solving the hierarchy problem.
We study quantum corrections to an extra dimensional Yukawa theory where a single flat extra spatial dimension is compactified on an interval. At a UV scale this theory can be made equivalent to a 5D theory with a bulk four-fermion operator by choosing appropriate boundary conditions for the running of the low-energy theory. Using the fermion bubble approximation we find vacuum solutions which break the chiral symmetries that arise from compactification. Of particular interest are the form of brane localized terms which arise from fermion loops. For example, quadratically divergent contributio…
Warped extra dimensions can address both the Planck-weak and flavor hierarchies of the Standard Model (SM). In this paper we discuss the SM neutrino mass generation in a scenario in which a SM singlet bulk fermion - coupled to the Higgs and the lepton doublet near the IR brane - is given a Majorana mass of order the Planck scale on the UV brane. Despite the resemblance to a type I seesaw mechanism, a careful investigation based on the mass basis for the singlet 4D modes reveals a very different picture. Namely, the SM neutrino masses are generated dominantly by the exchange of the TeV-scale ma…
In this thesis, we have studied the possibility to identify one of the right-handed neutrinos entering the type-I seesaw mechanism as a Dark Matter (DM) candidate, within the warped extra-dimensions paradigm. As a first step, we have reviewed the existing literature on the Randall-Sundrum scenarios and the Goldberger-Wise stabilization mechanism. We have discussed a feasible realization of the type-I seesaw mechanism, implemented by warped compactification of an extra dimension. Taking advantage of recent studies, we have explored how the thermal DM can be included in the warped scenario. We h…
We propose a new seesaw model in an extra-dimensional setup where only right-handed neutrinos are bulk fields. In the model, localizations of an extra-dimensional wave function and brane Majorana mass of the right-handed neutrinos can be different among each generation of the right-handed neutrinos. The setup can lead to different suppression factor dependences of effective right-handed neutrino masses and neutrino Yukawa couplings for each generation. It is shown that the resultant mass spectra of the right-handed neutrinos and neutrino Yukawa couplings are favored in models of neutrino dark …
We derive the scaling dimension of antisymmetric tensor operators in the boundary theory of the AdS/CFT correspondence using a functional integral representation of the boundary-to-boundary propagators of their dual fields in the bulk. We then apply this technique to AdS/QCD in which the bulk metric is warped, resulting in non-constant scaling dimensions. In particular, we compute the two-point correlation function of gluon field strength operators, for which it is prerequisite to know the ow of the anomalous scaling dimension under rescaling. The results are in very good agreement with quench…
A seesaw mechanism in an extra-dimension, known as the split seesaw mechanism, provides a natural way to realize a splitting mass spectrum of right-handed neutrinos. It leads to one keV sterile neutrino as a dark matter candidate and two heavy right-handed neutrinos being responsible for leptogenesis to explain the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe. We study models based on $A_4$ flavor symmetry in the context of the split seesaw mechanism. It is pointed out that most of known $A_4$ flavor models with three right-handed neutrinos being $A_4$ triplet suffer from a degeneracy problem for…
We study the generation of small neutrino masses in an extra-dimensional model, where right-handed neutrinos are allowed to propagate in the extra dimension, while the Standard Model particles are confined to a brane. Motivated by the fact that extra-dimensional models are non-renormalizable, we truncate the Kaluza-Klein towers at a maximal extra-dimensional momentum. The structure of the bulk Majorana mass term, motivated by the Sherk-Schwarz mechanism, implies that the right-handed Kaluza-Klein neutrinos pair to form Dirac neutrinos, except for a number of unpaired Majorana neutrinos at the …
In this paper we present a higher-dimensional seesaw mechanism. We consider a single, flat extra dimension, where a fat brane is localized and contains the standard model (SM) fields, similar to Universal Extra Dimension models. There is only one Dirac fermion in the bulk, and in four dimensions it results in two towers of Kaluza-Klein (KK) Majorana sterile neutrinos, whose mass mixing with the SM neutrinos is suppressed due to a brane-localized kinetic term. The interaction between the sterile neutrinos and the SM is through the usual coupling with the Higgs boson, where the coupling depends …
We consider quantum field theory in a five-dimensional anti-de Sitter background, possibly truncated by 4d branes. In the Euclidian version of this space, it is known that propagators exponentially decay when they go far enough towards the Poincaré horizon, i.e. deep enough into the IR region of the AdS bulk. In this note we show that an analogous property exists in Lorentzian AdS. The exponential suppression is found to occur in the presence of bulk interactions dressing the AdS propagators. We calculate one-loop gravitational dressing and find that the suppression effect comes from the scala…
We consider a single Minkowski brane sandwiched in between two copies of anti-de Sitter space. We allow the bulk Planck mass and cosmological constant to differ on either side of the brane. Linearised perturbations about this background reveal that gravity can be modified in the infra-red. At intermediate scales, the braneworld propagator mimics four-dimensional GR in that it has the correct momentum dependance. However it has the wrong tensor structure. Beyond a source dependant scale, we show that quadratic brane bending contributions become important, and conspire to correct the tensor stru…
We address the issue of whether extra dimensions could have an infinite volume and yet reproduce the effects of observable four-dimensional gravity on a brane. There is no normalizable zero-mode graviton in this case, nevertheless correct Newton's law can be obtained by exchanging bulk gravitons. This can be interpreted as an exchange of a single {\it metastable} 4D graviton. Such theories have remarkable phenomenological signatures since the evolution of the Universe becomes high-dimensional at very large scales. Furthermore, the bulk supersymmetry in the infinite volume limit might be preser…
