[Abridged] We extend color-magnitude relations for moderate-luminosity X-ray AGN hosts and non-AGN galaxies through the galaxy formation epoch in the Chandra Deep Fields. We utilized analyses of color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) to assess the role of moderate-luminosity AGNs in galaxy evolution. First, we confirm some previous results and extend them to higher redshifts, e.g., there is no apparent color bimodality for AGN hosts from z~0-2, but non-AGN galaxy color bimodality exists up to z~3; most AGNs reside in massive hosts and the AGN fraction rises strongly toward higher stellar mass up to z~2-3; and the colors of both AGN hosts and non-AGN galaxies become redder as the stellar mass increases up to z~2-3. Second, we point out that it is critical to use mass-matched samples to examine color-magnitude relations of AGN hosts and non-AGN galaxies. We show that for mass-matched samples up to z~2-3, AGN hosts lie in the same CMD region as non-AGN galaxies; i.e., there is no specific clustering of AGN hosts around the red sequence, the top of the blue cloud, or the green valley in between. The AGN fraction (~10%) is mostly independent of host-galaxy color, providing an indication of the duty cycle of SMBH growth in typical massive galaxies. These results are in contrast to those obtained with non-mass-matched samples where there is apparent AGN clustering in the CMD and the AGN fraction generally increases as the color becomes redder. We also find, for mass-matched samples, that the SFRs of AGN hosts are typically a factor of ~2-3 larger than those of non-AGN galaxies at z~0-1, whereas this difference diminishes at z~1-3. Our results can be reasonably explained by two main ingredients, color-mass correlation and passive or secular evolution of galaxies; and thus tightly constrain any effects from moderate-luminosity AGN feedback upon color-magnitude properties over the ~80% of cosmic time.
We briefly review how X-ray observations of high-redshift active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at z = 4-7 have played a critical role in understanding their basic demographics as well as their physical processes; e.g., absorption by nuclear material and winds, accretion rates, and jet emission. We point out some key remaining areas of uncertainty, highlighting where further Chandra and XMM-Newton observations/analyses, combined with new multiwavelength survey data, can advance understanding over the next decade.
We present a study of the relation between X-rays and ultraviolet emission in quasars for a sample of broad-line, radio-quiet objects obtained from the cross-match of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR14 with the latest Chandra Source Catalog 2.0 (2,332 quasars) and the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey (273 quasars). The non-linear relation between the ultraviolet (at 2500 A, $L_{O}$) and the X-ray (at 2 keV, $L_{X}$) emission in quasars has been proved to be characterised by a smaller intrinsic dispersion than the observed one, as long as a homogeneous selection, aimed at preventing the inclusion of…
We compare the measurement of the gravitational mass of 38 high-redshift galaxy clusters observed by Chandra using Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) and standard Newtonian gravity. Our analysis confirms earlier findings that MOND cannot explain the difference between the baryonic mass and the total mass inferred from the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium. We also find that the baryon fraction at $r_{2500}$ using MOND is consistent with the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) value of $Ω_{B}/Ω_{M}$
The Hawaii Survey Field SSA22 is the fourth deepest Chandra X-ray field. To allow for the fullest exploration of this field, we present new optical spectroscopy from Keck/DEIMOS and Keck/LRIS, which, in combination with the literature, brings the spectroscopic completeness of the 2--8 keV sample to 62%. We also make optical spectral classifications and estimate photometric redshifts for the sources without spectroscopic redshifts. We then determine hard X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) for the full sample of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), as well as for the broad-line AGNs (BLAGNs) and the no…
We present the X-ray point-source catalog produced from the Chandra Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS-I) observations of the combined \sim3.2 deg2 DEEP2 (XDEEP2) survey fields, which consist of four ~0.7-1.1 deg2 fields. The combined total exposures across all four XDEEP2 fields range from ~10ks-1.1Ms. We detect X-ray point-sources in both the individual ACIS-I observations and the overlapping regions in the merged (stacked) images. We find a total of 2976 unique X-ray sources within the survey area with an expected false-source contamination of ~30 sources (~1%). We present the combined…
We propose a strategy to search for bulk motions in the intracluster medium (ICM) of merging clusters based on {\sl Chandra} CCD data. Our goal is to derive robust measurements of the average redshift of projected ICM regions obtained from the centroid of the $K_α$ line emission. We thoroughly explore the effect of the unknown temperature structure along the line of sight to accurately evaluate the systematic uncertainties on the ICM redshift. We apply our method to the "Bullet cluster" (1E~0657-56). We directly identify 23 independent regions on the basis of the surface brightness contours, a…
This paper contains an analysis of short Chandra observations of 19 3C sources with redshifts between 0.3 and 0.5 not previously observed in the X-rays. This sample is part of a project to obtain Chandra data for all of the extragalactic sources in the 3C catalogue. Nuclear X-ray intensities as well as any X-ray emission associated with radio jet knots, hotspots or lobes have been measured in 3 energy bands: soft, medium and hard. Standard X-ray spectral analysis for the 4 brightest nuclei has been also performed. X-ray emission was detected for all the nuclei of the radio sources in the curre…
We have studied the large scale distribution of matter in the Chandra Deep Field South on the basis of photometric redshifts and we have identifed several over-densities between redshift 0.6 and 2.3. We analyse two of these structures using the deepest X-ray observations ever obtained: 4 Ms with the Chandra satellite and 2.5 Ms with XMM-Newton. We set a very faint upper limit on the X-ray luminosity of a structure at redshift 1.6, and we find an extended X-ray emission from a structure at redshift 0.96 of which we can estimate the gas temperature and make a comparison with the scaling relation…
[Abridged] We present reliable multiwavelength identifications and high-quality photometric redshifts for the 462 X-ray sources in the ~2 Ms Chandra Deep Field-South. Source identifications are carried out using deep optical-to-radio multiwavelength catalogs, and are then combined to create lists of primary and secondary counterparts for the X-ray sources. We identified reliable counterparts for 446 (96.5%) of the X-ray sources, with an expected false-match probability of ~6.2%. A likelihood-ratio method is used for source matching, which effectively reduces the false-match probability at fain…
We report the $a~posteriori$ confirmation of two large-scale filaments along the sight-line of the blazar 1ES~1553+113, which correspond to Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) absorption features in the X-ray and far ultraviolet. We use the WISE-SuperCOSMOS photometric catalog to map the cosmic-web in the direction of the blazar, and find significant filaments at redshifts of $z=0.23\pm0.02$ and $z=0.31\pm0.02$, which roughly align with the absorption redshifts. A third X-ray absorption feature at $z_X=0.133$ did not have any corresponding structures in the photometric catalog.
We present the Arizona CDFS Environment Survey (ACES), a recently-completed spectroscopic redshift survey of the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) conducted using IMACS on the Magellan-Baade telescope. In total, the survey targeted 7277 unique sources down to a limiting magnitude of R = 24.1, yielding 5080 secure redshifts across the ~30' x 30' extended CDFS region. The ACES dataset delivers a significant increase to both the spatial coverage and the sampling density of the spectroscopic observations in the field. Combined with previously-published, spectroscopic redshifts, ACES now creates a hi…
We present the high redshift (3<z<5.3) 0.5-2 keV number counts and the 2-10 keV (rest frame) space density of X-ray selected AGNs detected in the Chandra COSMOS survey. The sample comprises 81 X-ray detected sources with available spectroscopic (31) and photometric (50) redshifts plus 20 sources with a formal z_phot<3 but with a broad photometric redshift probability distribution, such that z_phot+1sigma>3. 81 sources are selected in the 0.5-2 keV band, 14 are selected in the 2-10 keV and 6 in the 0.5-10 keV bands. We sample the high luminosity (log L_(2-10 keV)>44.15 erg/s) space density up t…
We employ the Chandra Multiwavelength Project (ChaMP) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to study the fraction of X-ray-active galaxies in the field out to z = 0.7. We utilize spectroscopic redshifts from SDSS and ChaMP, as well as photometric redshifts from several SDSS catalogs, to compile a parent sample of more than 100,000 SDSS galaxies and nearly 1,600 Chandra X-ray detections. Detailed ChaMP volume completeness maps allow us to investigate the local fraction of active galactic nuclei (AGN), defined as those objects having broad-band X-ray luminosities L_X (0.5-8 keV) > 10^42 erg s^…
We present results from a spectral analysis of a sample of high-redshift (z>3) X-ray selected AGN in the 4 Ms Chandra Deep Field South (CDF-S), the deepest X-ray survey to date. The sample is selected using the most recent spectroscopic and photometric information available in this field. It consists of 34 sources with median redshift z=3.7, 80 median net counts in the 0.5-7 keV band and median rest-frame absorption-corrected luminosity $L_{2-10 \rmn{keV}}\approx1.5\times10^{44}\rmn{erg} \rmn{s^{-1}}$. Spectral analysis for the full sample is presented and the intrinsic column density distribu…
Chandra X-ray observations of the high redshift (z =1.532) radio-loud quasar 3C270.1 in 2008 February show the nucleus to have a power-law spectrum, Gamma = 1.66 +/- 0.08, typical of a radio-loud quasar, and a marginally-detected Fe Kalpha emission line. The data also reveal extended X-ray emission, about half of which is associated with the radio emission from this source. The southern emission is co-spatial with the radio lobe and peaks at the position of the double radio hotspot. Modeling this hotspot including Spitzer upper limits rules out synchrotron emission from a single power-law popu…
Ultra-deep observations of ECDF-S with Chandra and XMM-Newton enable a search for extended X-ray emission down to an unprecedented flux of $2\times10^{-16}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. We present the search for the extended emission on spatial scales of 32$^{\prime\prime}$ in both Chandra and XMM data, covering 0.3 square degrees and model the extended emission on scales of arcminutes. We present a catalog of 46 spectroscopically identified groups, reaching a redshift of 1.6. We show that the statistical properties of ECDF-S, such as logN-logS and X-ray luminosity function are broadly consistent …
Recent work has demonstrated the potential of gravitationally lensed quasars to extend measurements of black hole spin out to high-redshift with the current generation of X-ray observatories. Here we present an analysis of a large sample of 27 lensed quasars in the redshift range 1.0<z<4.5 observed with Chandra, utilizing over 1.6 Ms of total observing time, focusing on the rest-frame iron K emission from these sources. Although the X-ray signal-to-noise (S/N) currently available does not permit the detection of iron emission from the inner accretion disk in individual cases in our sample, we …
(Abridged) We have analyzed Chandra LETG and XMM-Newton RGS spectra towards the z=0.177 quasar PG 1116+215, a sightline that is rendered particularly interesting by the HST detection of several OVI and HI broad Lyman-alpha absorption lines that may be associated with the warm-hot intergalactic medium. We performed a search for resonance K-alpha absorption lines from OVII and OVIII at the redshifts of the detected far-ultraviolet lines. We detected an absorption line in the Chandra spectra at 5.2 sigma confidence level at wavelengths corresponding to OVIII K-alpha at z=0.0911+-0.0004+-0.0005 (s…
High redshift AGN holds the key to understand the early structure formation and to probe the Universe during its infancy. We review the latest searches for high-z AGN in the deepest X-ray field so far, the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) 4 Msecond exposure. We do not confirm the positive detection of a signal in the stacked Chandra images at the position of z~6 galaxies recently reported by Treister and collaborators. We present z>3 X-ray sources number counts in the 0.5-2 keV band obtained joining CDFS faint detections with Chandra-COSMOS and XMM-COSMOS detections. We use these number counts …
By analyzing the gas temperature maps created from the Chandra archive data, we reveal the prevailing existence of temperature substructures on ~100 kpc scales in the central regions of nine intermediate-redshift (z~0.1) galaxy clusters, which resemble those found in the Virgo and Coma Clusters. Each substructure contains a clump of hot plasma whose temperature is about 2-3 keV higher than the environment, corresponding to an excess thermal energy of ~1E58-1E60 erg per clump. Since if there were no significant non-gravitational heating sources, these substructures would have perished in 1E8-1E…
The ubiquitous presence of the Fe line complex in the X-ray spectra of galaxy clusters offers the possibility of measuring their redshift without resorting to spectroscopic follow-up observations. In this paper we assess the accuracy with which the redshift of galaxy clusters can be recovered from an X-ray spectral analysis of Chandra archival data. This study indicates a strategy to build large surveys of clusters whose identification and redshift measurement are both based on X-ray data alone. We apply a blind search for K--shell and L--shell Fe line complex in X-ray cluster spectra using Ch…
In this contribution we trace the evolution of cool-core clusters out to z~1.3 using high-resolution Chandra data of three representative cluster samples spanning different redshift ranges. Our analysis is based on the measurement of the surface brightness (SB) concentration, c_SB, which strongly anti-correlates with the central cooling time and allows us to characterize the cool-core strength in low S/N data. We confirm a negative evolution in the fraction of cool-core clusters with redshift, in particular for very strong cool-cores. Still, we find evidence for a large population of well form…
We analyse Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of a set of galaxy clusters selected by the South Pole Telescope using a new publicly-available forward-modelling projection code, MBProj2, assuming hydrostatic equilibrium. By fitting a powerlaw plus constant entropy model we find no evidence for a central entropy floor in the lowest-entropy systems. A model of the underlying central entropy distribution shows a narrow peak close to zero entropy which accounts for 60 per cent of the systems, and a second broader peak around 130 keV cm^2. We look for evolution over the 0.28 to 1.2 redshift rang…
We present a comprehensive structure detection analysis of the 0.3 square degree area of the MUSYC-ACES field which covers the Chandra Deep Field-South (CDFS). Using a density-based clustering algorithm on the MUSYC and ACES photometric and spectroscopic catalogues we find 62 over-dense regions up to redshifts of 1, including, clusters, groups and filaments. All structures are confirmed using the DBSCAN method, including the detection of nine structures previously reported in the literature. We present a catalogue of all structures present including their central position, mean redshift, veloc…
A key goal of the Stage IV dark energy experiments Euclid, LSST and WFIRST is to measure the growth of structure with cosmic time from weak lensing analysis over large regions of the sky. Weak lensing cosmology will be challenging: in addition to highly accurate galaxy shape measurements, statistically robust and accurate photometric redshift (photo-z) estimates for billions of faint galaxies will be needed in order to reconstruct the three-dimensional matter distribution. Here we present an overview of and initial results from the Complete Calibration of the Color-Redshift Relation (C3R2) sur…
Calibrating the photometric redshifts of >10^9 galaxies for upcoming weak lensing cosmology experiments is a major challenge for the astrophysics community. The path to obtaining the required spectroscopic redshifts for training and calibration is daunting, given the anticipated depths of the surveys and the difficulty in obtaining secure redshifts for some faint galaxy populations. Here we present an analysis of the problem based on the self-organizing map, a method of mapping the distribution of data in a high-dimensional space and projecting it onto a lower-dimensional representation. We ap…
Context. The XMM-XXL survey uses observations from XMM-Newton to detect clusters of galaxies over a wide range in mass and redshift. The moderate PSF of XMM-Newton means that point sources within or projected onto a cluster may not be separated from the cluster emission, leading to enhanced luminosities and affecting the selection function of the cluster survey. Aims. We present the results of short Chandra observations of 21 galaxy clusters and cluster candidates at redshifts z $>$ 1 detected in the XMM-XXL survey in X-rays or selected in the optical and infra-red. Methods. With the superior …
We report the results of a study which assembles deep observations with the ACIS-I instrument on the Chandra Observatory to study the evolution in the core properties of a sample of galaxy groups and clusters out to redshifts $z\approx 1.3$. A search for extended objects within these fields yields a total of 62 systems for which redshifts are available, and we added a further 24 non-X-ray-selected clusters, to investigate the impact of selection effects and improve our statistics at high redshift. Six different estimators of cool core strength are applied to these data: the entropy (K) and coo…
Precision-era optical cluster cosmology calls for a precise definition of the red sequence (RS), consistent across redshift. To this end, we present the Red Dragon algorithm: an error-corrected multivariate Gaussian mixture model (GMM). Simultaneous use of multiple colors and smooth evolution of GMM parameters result in a continuous RS and blue cloud (BC) characterization across redshift, avoiding the discontinuities of red fraction inherent in swapping RS selection colors. Based on a mid-redshift spectroscopic sample of SDSS galaxies, a RS defined by Red Dragon selects quenched galaxies (low …
With this paper, we release accurate photometric redshifts for 1692 counterparts to Chandra sources in the central square degree of the COSMOS field. The availability of a large training set of spectroscopic redshifts that extends to faint magnitudes enabled photometric redshifts comparable to the highest quality results presently available for normal galaxies. We demonstrate that morphologically extended, faint X-ray sources without optical variability are more accurately described by a library of normal galaxies (corrected for emission lines) than by AGN-dominated templates, even if these so…
In gravitational lensing the average colors of the images are not identical to the average color of the source. The highly non-linear mapping of gravitational lensing does not preserve the color balance of the source, and this mapping is different for each image. The color distortion of the images is illustrated using HST images of the lens SL2SJ02140. It is shown that in this lens the color of the images is variable, reflecting the variable color of the source. The average color of the images in SL2SJ02140 are interpreted as a variable amplification of different sources regions with different…
We present the largest high-redshift (3<z<6.85) sample of X-ray-selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) on a contiguous field, using sources detected in the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey. The sample contains 174 sources, 87 with spectroscopic redshift, the other 87 with photometric redshift (z_phot). In this work we treat z_phot as a probability weighted sum of contributions, adding to our sample the contribution of sources with z_phot<3 but z_phot probability distribution >0 at z>3. We compute the number counts in the observed 0.5-2 keV band, finding a decline in the number of sources at z>3 and…
We present the discovery of seven X-ray emitting groups of galaxies selected as extended X-ray sources in the 200 ksec Chandra coverage of the All-wavelength Extended Groth Strip International Survey (AEGIS). In addition, we report on AGN activity associated to these systems. Using the DEEP2 Galaxy Redshift Survey coverage, we identify optical counterparts and determine velocity dispersions. In particular, we find three massive high-redshift groups at z>0.7, one of which is at z=1.13, the first X-ray detections of spectroscopically selected DEEP2 groups. We also present a first look at the the…
We present the first photometric redshift distribution for a large unbiased sample of 870um selected submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) with robust identifications based on observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). In our analysis we consider 96 SMGs in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South, 77 of which have 4-19 band, optical-near-infrared, photometry. We model the Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) for these 77 SMGs, deriving a median photometric redshift of z=2.3+/-0.1. The remaining 19 SMGs have insufficient optical or near-infrared photometry to derive photometric redshift…
We have conducted a statistical analysis of the ultra-luminous X-ray point sources (ULXs; L(X) >= 10^39 erg/s) in a sample of galaxies selected from the Arp Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies. We find a possible enhancement of a factor of ~2-4 in the number of ULXs per blue luminosity for the strongly interacting subset. Such an enhancement would be expected if ULX production is related to star formation, as interacting galaxies tend to have enhanced star formation rates on average. For most of the Arp galaxies in our sample, the total number of ULXs compared to the far-infrared luminosity is consiste…
We present detection and analysis of faint X-ray sources in the Chandra deep field south (CDFS) using the 4 Msec Chandra observation and adopting a new detection algorithm, based on a targeted search at the position of known high-z galaxies. This optimized technique results in the identification of 54 z>3 AGNs, 29 of which are new detections. Applying stringent completeness criteria, we derive AGN luminosity functions in the redshift bins 3-4, 4-5 and >5.8 and for 42.75<log L(2-10 keV)<44.5. We join this data with the luminous AGN luminosity functions from optical surveys and find that the evo…
We study the sub-mm properties of color-selected galaxies via a stacking analysis applied for the first time to interferometric data at sub-mm wavelengths. We base our study on 344 GHz ALMA continuum observations of ~20''-wide fields centered on 86 sub-mm sources detected in the LABOCA Extended Chandra Deep Field South Sub-mm Survey (LESS). We select various classes of galaxies (K-selected, star-forming sBzK galaxies, extremely red objects and distant red galaxies) according to their optical/NIR fluxes. We find clear, >10-sigma detections in the stacked images of all these galaxy classes. We i…
We present ALMA 870-um (345GHz) observations of two sub-millimetre galaxies (SMGs) drawn from an ALMA study of the 126 sub-millimeter sources from the LABOCA Extended Chandra Deep Field South Survey (LESS). The ALMA data identify the counterparts to these previously unidentified sub-millimeter sources and serendipitously detect bright emission lines in their spectra which we show are most likely to be [C II]157.74um emission yielding redshifts of z=4.42 and z=4.44. This blind detection rate within the 7.5-GHz bandpass of ALMA is consistent with the previously derived photometric redshift distr…
Type 1a supernova magnitudes are used to fit cosmological parameters under the assumption the model will fit the observed redshift dependence. We test this assumption with the Union 2.1 compilation of 580 sources. Several independent tests find the existing model fails to account for a significant correlation of supernova color and redshift. The correlation of magnitude residuals relative to the $ΛCDM$ model and $color \times redshift$ has a significance equivalent to 13 standard deviations, as evaluated by randomly shuffling the data. Extending the existing $B-V$ color correction to a relatio…
We present one of the most precise measurement to date of the spatial clustering of X-ray selected AGNs using a sample derived from the Chandra X-ray Observatory survey in the Bootes field. The real-space two-point correlation function over a redshift interval from z=0.17 to z~3 is well described by the power law, xi(r)=(r/r0)^-gamma, for comoving separations r<~20h^-1 Mpc. We find gamma=1.84+-0.12 and r0 consistent with no redshift trend within the sample (varying between r0=5.5+-0.6 h^-1 Mpc for <z>=0.37 and r0=6.9+-1.0 h^-1 Mpc for <z>=1.28). Further, we are able to measure the projections …
We analyzed the luminosity-temperature-mass of gas (L_{X} - T - M_{g}) relation for sample of galaxy clusters that have been observed by the Chandra satellite. We used 21 high-redshift clusters (0.4 < z < 1.4). We assumed a power-law relation between the X-ray luminosity of galaxy clusters and its temperature and redshift L_{X} ~ (1+z)^{A_{L_{X}T}}T^{beta_{L_{X}T}}. We obtained that for an Omega_{m} = 0.27 and Lambda = 0.73 universe, A_{L_{X}T} = 1.50 +/- 0.23, beta_{L_{X}T} = 2.55 +/- 0.07 (for 68% confidence level). Then, we found the evolution of M_{g} - T relation is small. We assumed a po…
We present Chandra X-ray measurements of the gas mass fraction out to r500 for a complete sample of the 35 most luminous clusters from the Brightest Cluster Sample and the Extended Brightest Cluster Sample at redshift z=0.15-0.30. The sample includes relaxed and unrelaxed clusters, and the data were analysed independently using two pipelines and two different models for the gas density and temperature. We measure an average of fgas(r500) = 0.163 +/- 0.032, which is in agreement with the cosmic baryon fraction (Omega_b / Omega_M = 0.167 +/- 0.006) at the 1-sigma level, after adding the stellar …
The Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory Deep Field polarization study has been matched with the Spitzer Wide-Area Infrared Extragalactic survey of the European Large Area Infrared Space Observatory Survey North 1 field. We have used VLA observations with a total intensity rms of 87 microJy beam^-1 to match SWIRE counterparts to the radio sources. Infrared color analysis of our radio sample shows that the majority of polarized sources are elliptical galaxies with an embedded active galactic nucleus. Using available redshift catalogs, we found 429 radio sources of which 69 are polarized wit…
We present a pilot X-ray study of the five most massive ($M_{500}>5 \times 10^{14} M_{\odot}$), distant (z~1), galaxy clusters detected via the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. We optimally combine XMM-Newton and Chandra X-ray observations by leveraging the throughput of XMM to obtain spatially-resolved spectroscopy, and the spatial resolution of Chandra to probe the bright inner parts and to detect embedded point sources. Capitalising on the excellent agreement in flux-related measurements, we present a new method to derive the density profiles, constrained in the centre by Chandra and in the outski…
Using the deepest (370 ksec) Chandra observation of a high-redshift galaxy cluster, we perform a detailed characterization of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) of WARPJ1415.1+3612 at z=1.03. We also explore the connection between the ICM core properties and the radio/optical properties of the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG). We perform a spatially resolved analysis of the ICM to obtain temperature, metallicity and surface brightness profiles. Using the deprojected temperature and density profiles we accurately derive the cluster mass at different overdensities. In addition to the X-ray data, we us…
Chandra observations of a complete, flux-limited sample of 38 high-redshift (1<z<2), low-frequency selected (and so unbiased in orientation) 3CRR radio sources are reported. The sample includes 21 quasars (= broad line radio galaxies) and 17 narrow line radio galaxies (NLRGs) with matched 178 MHz radio luminosity (log L_R ~ 44-45). The quasars have high radio core-fraction, high X-ray luminosities (log L_X ~ 45-46) and soft X-ray hardness ratios (HR ~ -0.5) indicating low obscuration. The NLRGs have lower core-fraction, lower apparent X-ray luminosities (log L_X ~ 43-45) and mostly hard X-ray …
We present improved methods for using stars found in astronomical exposures to calibrate both star and galaxy colors as well as to adjust the instrument flat field. By developing a spectroscopic model for the SDSS stellar locus in color-color space, synthesizing an expected stellar locus, and simultaneously solving for all unknown zeropoints when fitting to the instrumental locus, we increase the calibration accuracy of stellar locus matching. We also use a new combined technique to estimate improved flat-field models for the Subaru SuprimeCam camera, forming `star flats' based on the magnitud…
