By analyzing the gas temperature maps created from the Chandra archive data, we reveal the prevailing existence of temperature substructures on ~100 kpc scales in the central regions of nine intermediate-redshift (z~0.1) galaxy clusters, which resemble those found in the Virgo and Coma Clusters. Each substructure contains a clump of hot plasma whose temperature is about 2-3 keV higher than the environment, corresponding to an excess thermal energy of ~1E58-1E60 erg per clump. Since if there were no significant non-gravitational heating sources, these substructures would have perished in 1E8-1E9 yrs due to thermal conduction and turbulent flows, whose velocity is found to range from about 200 to 400 km/s, we conclude that the substructures cannot be created and sustained by inhomogeneous radiative cooling. We also eliminate the possibilities that the temperature substructures are caused by supernova explosions, or by the non-thermal X-ray emission due to the inverse-Comptonization of the CMB photons. By calculating the rising time of AGN-induced buoyant bubbles, we speculate that the intermittent AGN outbursts (~ 1E60 erg per burst) may have played a crucial role in the forming of the high temperature substructures. Our results are supported by recent study of McNamara & Nulsen (2007), posing a tight observational constraint on future theoretical and numerical studies.
The eROSITA mission will provide the largest sample of galaxy clusters detected in X-ray to date (one hundred thousand expected). This sample will be used to constrain cosmological models by measuring cluster masses. An important mass proxy is the electron temperature of the hot plasma detected in X-rays. We want to understand the detection properties and possible bias in temperatures due to unresolved substructures in the cluster halos. We simulated a large number of galaxy cluster spectra with known temperature substructures and compared the results from analysing eROSITA simulated observati…
In magnetically accreting white dwarfs, the height above the white dwarf surface where the standing shock is formed is intimately related with the accretion rate and the white dwarf mass. However, it is difficult to measure. We obtained new data with NuSTAR and Swift that, together with archival Chandra data, allow us to constrain the height of the shock in the intermediate polar EX Hya. We conclude that the shock has to form at least at a distance of about one white dwarf radius from the surface in order to explain the weak Fe Kα 6.4 keV line, the absence of a reflection hump in the high-ener…
RXCJ0232.2-4420, at $z$ = 0.28, is a peculiar system hosting a radio halo source around the cool-core of the cluster. To investigate its formation and nature, we used archival {\it Chandra} and XMM-\textit{Newton} X-ray data to study the dynamical state of the cluster and detect possible substructures in the hot gas. Its X-ray surface brightness distribution shows no clear disruption except an elongation in the North-East to South-West direction. We perform the unsharp masking technique and compute morphology parameters (Gini, $M_{20}$ and concentration) to characterise the degree of disturban…
We report the serendipitous discovery of a bright point source flare in the Abell cluster 1795 with archival EUVE and Chandra observations. Assuming the EUVE emission is associated with the Chandra source, the X-ray 0.5-7 keV flux declined by a factor of ~2300 over a time span of 6 years, following a power-law decay with index ~2.44+-0.40. The Chandra data alone vary by a factor of ~20. The spectrum is well fit by a blackbody with a constant temperature of kT~0.09 keV (~10^6 K). The flare is spatially coincident with the nuclear region of a faint, inactive galaxy with a photometric redshift co…
Based on a 21.5 ks \chandra\ observation of A2556, we identify an edge on the surface brightness profile (SBP) at about 160$h_{71}^{-1}$ kpc northeast of the cluster center, and it corresponds to a shock front whose Mach number $\mathcal{M}$ is calculated to be $1.25_{-0.03}^{+0.02}$. No prominent substructure, such as sub-cluster, is found in either optical or X-ray band that can be associated with the edge, suggesting that the conventional super-sonic motion mechanism may not work in this case. As an alternative solution, we propose that the nonlinear steepening of acoustic wave, which is in…
We present a $Chandra$ study of the hot intragroup medium (hIGM) of the galaxy group NCG2563. The $Chandra$ mosaic observations, with a total exposure time of ~430 ks, allow the gas density to be detected beyond $R_{200}$ and the gas temperature out to 0.75 $R_{200}$. This represents the first observational measurement of the physical properties of a poor groups beyond $R_{500}$. By capitalizing on the exquisite spatial resolution of $Chandra$ that is capable to remove unrelated emission from point sources and substructures, we are able to radially constrain the inhomogeneities of gas ("clumpi…
The brightest Ultra-Luminous X-ray source HLX-1 in the galaxy ESO 243-49 provides strong evidence for the existence of intermediate mass black holes. As the luminosity and thus the mass estimate depend on the association of HLX-1 with ESO 243-49, it is essential to confirm its affiliation. This requires follow-up investigations at wavelengths other than X-rays, which in-turn needs an improved source position. To further reinforce the intermediate mass black hole identification, it is necessary to determine HLX-1's environment to establish whether it could potentially form and nourish a black h…
Markarian 6 is a nearby (D~78 Mpc) Seyfert 1.5, early-type galaxy, with a double set of radio bubbles. The outer set spans ~7.5 kpc and is expanding into the halo regions of the host galaxy. We present an analysis of our new Chandra observation, together with archival XMM-Newton data, to look for evidence of emission from shocked gas around the external radio bubbles, both from spatially resolved regions in Chandra and from spectral analysis of the XMM data. We also look for evidence of a variable absorbing column along our line of sight to Mrk 6, to explain the evident differences seen in the…
(Abridged) We have discovered an intermediate polar (IP) in the 100 ks Chandra observation of Baade's Window (BW), a low extinction region at ~ 4 deg south of the Galactic Center. The source exhibits large X-ray modulations at a period of 1028.4 s in the 0.3 - 8 keV band. The X-ray spectral fit with a power law model shows the integrated spectrum is intrinsically hard (photon index ~ 0.44) and moderately absorbed (NH22 ~ 0.15). Quantile analysis reveals that the modulations in the X-ray flux strongly correlate with spectral changes that are dominated by varying internal absorption. The X-ray s…
We report the results of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) observations of the GLIMPSE-C01 (hereafter GC01) star cluster. Color-magnitude and color-color diagrams suggest a cluster age of $\gtrsim2$ Gyrs up to $\sim10$ Gyrs (dependent on GC01's metallicity), a distance of 3.3-3.5 kpc, and strong differential reddening with $A_V=14-22$. After performing astrometric corrections, we find that nine of the 15 X-ray sources have at least one NIR counterpart within the 2$σ$ CXO positional error circles. However, given the very high density of NIR sources in the cluster,…
X-ray substructures in clusters of galaxies provide indirect clues about the microphysical properties of the intracluster medium (ICM), which are still not very well known. In order to investigate X-ray substructures in detail, we studied archival $\sim$1~Msec Chandra data of the core of the Perseus cluster, focusing on the substructures associated with the sloshing cold front. In the east half of the cold front, we found a Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) layer candidate. The measured width-to-azimuthal extension ratio and the thermodynamic properties are all consistent with it being a KHI …
The unrivalled spatial resolution of the Chandra X-ray observatory has allowed many breakthroughs to be made in high energy astrophysics. Here we explore applications of Gaussian Gradient Magnitude (GGM) filtering to X-ray data, which dramatically improves the clarity of surface brightness edges in X-ray observations, and maps gradients in X-ray surface brightness over a range of spatial scales. In galaxy clusters, we find that this method is able to reveal remarkable substructure behind the cold fronts in Abell 2142 and Abell 496, possibly the result of Kelvin Helmholtz instabilities. In Abel…
The HST Frontier Fields cluster MACS J1149.6+2223 is one of the most complex merging clusters, believed to consist of four dark matter halos. We present results from deep (365 ks) Chandra observations of the cluster, which reveal the most distant cold front (z=0.544) discovered to date. In the cluster outskirts, we also detect hints of a surface brightness edge that could be the bow shock preceding the cold front. The substructure analysis of the cluster identified several components with large relative radial velocities, thus indicating that at least some collisions occur almost along the lin…
We present a Chandra study of surface brightness fluctuations in the diffuse intracluster medium of the Perseus Cluster. Our study utilizes deep, archival imaging of the cluster core as well as a new mosaic of 29 short 5 ks observations extending in 8 different directions out to radii of r_500 ~ 2.2r_2500. Under the assumption that the distribution of densities at a given radius is log-normally distributed, two important quantities can be derived from the width of the log-normal density distribution on a given spatial scale: the density bias, which is equal to the square root of the clumping f…
Galaxy groups are key tracers of galaxy evolution, cluster evolution, and structure formation, yet they are difficult to study at even moderate redshift. We have undertaken a project to observe a flux-limited sample of intermediate-redshift (0.1 < z < 0.5) group candidates identified by the XBootes Chandra survey. When complete, this project will nearly triple the current number of groups with measured temperatures in this redshift range. Here we present deep Suzaku/XIS and Chandra/ACIS follow-up observations of the first 10 targets in this project; all are confirmed sources of diffuse, therma…
M82 X-1 is one of the brightest ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) known, which, assuming Eddington-limited accretion and other considerations, makes it one of the best intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) candidates. However, the ULX may still be explained by super-Eddington accretion onto a stellar-remnant black hole. We present simultaneous NuSTAR, Chandra and Swift/XRT observations during the peak of a flaring episode with the aim of modeling the emission of M82 X-1 and yielding insights into its nature. We find that thin-accretion disk models all require accretion rates at or above the Edd…
We analysed the deep archival Chandra observations of the high-temperature galaxy cluster Abell 2319 to investigate the prominent cold front in its core. The main sharp arc of the front shows wiggles, or variations of the radius of the density jump along the arc. At the southern end of the arc is a feature that resembles a Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) eddy, beyond which the sharp front dissolves. These features suggest that KH instabilities develop at the front. Under this assumption, we can place an upper limit on the ICM viscosity that is several times below the isotropic Spitzer value. Other featu…
Globular clusters (GCs) are thought to harbor the long-sought population of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs). We present a systematic search for a putative IMBH in 81 Milky Way GCs, based on archival Chandra X-ray observations. We find in only six GCs a significant X-ray source positionally coincident with the cluster center, which have 0.5-8 keV luminosities between $\sim1\times 10^{30}~{\rm erg~s^{-1}}$ to $\sim 4\times10^{33}~{\rm erg~s^{-1}}$. However, the spectral and temporal properties of these six sources can also be explained in terms of binary stars. The remaining 75 GCs do not …
I report the analysis of an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) located in the galaxy NGC 1291. This X-ray point source is denominated IXO6 in the Catalog of Candidate IXO (Colbert & Ptak). An Intermediate-luminosity X-ray Object (IXO) is defined as an off-nuclear, compact object with luminosity Lx [2-10keV] >= 1039 erg s-1. The cutoff Lx is defined as a value greater than the Eddington luminosity of a 1.4 Mo black hole (10 38.3 erg s-1). IXO is an early denomination of what is call now a ULX point source. The Catalog was derived from a ROSAT survey and represents 87 IXOS in 54 galaxies. IXO6 was…
Recently, unresolved hard (20-40 keV) X-ray emission has been discovered within the central 10 pc of the Galaxy, possibly indicating a large population of intermediate polars (IPs). Chandra and XMM-Newton measurements in the surrounding ~50 pc imply a much lighter population of IPs with $\langle M_{\rm WD} \rangle \approx 0.5 M_\odot$. Here we use broad-band NuSTAR observations of two IPs: TV Columbae, which has a fairly typical but widely varying reported mass of $M_{\rm WD} \approx 0.5-1.0 M_\odot$, and IGR J17303-0601, with a heavy reported mass of $M_{\rm WD} \approx 1.0-1.2 M_\odot$. We i…
We present the results of deep Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of a complex merging galaxy cluster Abell 2256 (A2256) that hosts a spectacular radio relic (RR). The temperature and metallicity maps show clear evidence of a merger between the western subcluster (SC) and the primary cluster (PC). We detect five X-ray surface brightness edges. Three of them near the cluster center are cold fronts (CFs): CF1 is associated with the infalling SC; CF2 is located in the east of the PC; and CF3 is to the west of the PC core. The other two edges at cluster outskirts are shock fronts (SFs): SF1 near …
A521 has been a subject of extensive panchromatic studies from X-ray to radio. The cluster possesses a number of remarkable features including a bright radio relic with a steep spectrum, more than three distinct galaxy groups forming a filament, and two disturbed X-ray peaks at odds with the distant position and tilted orientation of the radio relic. These several lines of evidence indicate a complex merger. In this paper, we present a multi-wavelength study of A521 based on Subaru optical, Hubble Space Telescope infrared, Chandra X-ray, GMRT radio, and MMT optical spectroscopic observations. …
We expand upon the AMUSE-Virgo survey which imaged 100 early-type Virgo cluster galaxies with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and we place an emphasis on potential intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs). Virgo early-type galaxies with absolute magnitudes $\mathfrak{M}_B\gtrsim-20.5$ mag have $B$-band luminosities that scale with the square of the stellar velocity dispersion: $L_B\proptoσ^2$. We show that the non-linear `super-quadratic' relation $M_{\rm bh}\propto L_B^2$-$L_B^{2.5}$ from Graham & Scott yields black hole masses, $M_{\rm bh}$, that agree with the $M_{\rm bh}$-$σ$ relation down to …
We explore here the young stellar populations in the Rosette Molecular Cloud (RMC) region with high spatial resolution X-ray images from the Chandra X-ray Observatory, which are effective in locating weak-lined T Tauri stars as well as disk-bearing young stars. A total of 395 X-ray point sources are detected, 299 of which (76%) have an optical or near-infrared (NIR) counterpart identified from deep FLAMINGOS images. From X-ray and mass sensitivity limits, we infer a total population of about 1700 young stars in the survey region. Based on smoothed stellar surface density maps, we investigate t…
