The results of neutron scattering and angle-resolved photoemission experiments for the Fe-pnictide parent compounds, and their metallic nature, are shown to impose severe constraints on the range of values that can be considered "realistic" for the intraorbital Hubbard repulsion U and Hund coupling J in multiorbital Hubbard models treated in the mean-field approximation. Phase diagrams for three- and five-orbital models are here provided, and the physically realistic regime of couplings is highlighted, to guide future theoretical work into the proper region of parameters of Hubbard models. In addition, using the random phase approximation, the pairing tendencies in these realistic coupling regions are investigated. It is shown that the dominant spin-singlet pairing channels in these coupling regimes correspond to nodal superconductivity, with strong competition between several states that belong to different irreducible representations. This is compatible with experimental bulk measurements that have reported the existence of nodes in several Fe-pnictide compounds.
We study the orbital-dependent superconducting pairing in a five-orbital t-J1-J2 model for iron pnictides. Depending on the orbital selectivity of electron correlations and the orbital characters along the Fermi surface, the superconducting gap in an A_{1g} pairing state may exhibit anisotropy. This anisotropy varies with the degree of J1-J2 magnetic frustration. We have also calculated the dynamical spin susceptibility in the superconducting state. The frequency dependence of the susceptibility at the antiferromagnetic wavevector (π,0) shows a resonance, whose width is enhanced by the orbital…
There is increasing recognition that the multiorbital nature of the 3d electrons is important to the proper description of the electronic states in the normal state of the iron-based superconductors. Earlier studies of the pertinent multiorbital Hubbard models identified an orbital-selective Mott phase, which anchors the orbital-selective behavior seen in the overall phase diagram. An important characteristics of the models is that the orbitals are kinetically coupled -- i.e. hybridized -- to each other, which makes the orbital-selective Mott phase especially nontrivial. A U(1) slave-spin meth…
Multi-orbital Hubbard model Hamiltonians for the undoped parent compounds of the Fe-pnictide superconductors are here investigated using mean-field techniques. For a realistic four-orbital model, our results show the existence of an intermediate Hubbard U coupling regime where the mean-field ground state has spin stripe magnetic order, as in neutron scattering experiments, while remaining metallic, due to the phenomenon of band overlaps. The angle-resolved photoemission intensity and Fermi surface of this magnetic and metallic state are discussed. Other models are also investigated, including …
Weak-coupling approaches to the pairing problem in the iron pnictide superconductors have predicted a wide variety of superconducting ground states. We argue here that this is due both to the inadequacy of certain approximations to the effective low-energy band structure, and to the natural near-degeneracy of different pairing channels in superconductors with many distinct Fermi surface sheets. In particular, we review attempts to construct two-orbital effective band models, the argument for their fundamental inconsistency with the symmetry of these materials, and the comparison of the dynamic…
We apply a Hartree-Fock approximation to a two-orbital model proposed for Fe pnictide superconductors. It is found that the antiferromagnetic (AFM) order with the ordering vector Q=(pi,0) is realized. The AFM order appears simultaneously with ferro-orbital order, the latter leads to a secondary lattice distortion. We also investigate the influence of doping on the AFM order. The size of the AFM moment changes continuously for lightly doped cases, but when the amount of doped carriers exceeds a certain value the AFM state is suddenly destroyed. We also show that Fermi surfaces remain and change…
ARPES experiments on iron based superconductors show that the differences between the measured and calculated electronic band structures look insignificant but can be crucial for understanding of the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity. Here we focus on those differences for 111 and 122 compounds and discuss the observed correlation of the experimental band structure with the superconductivity.
We elucidate the pivotal role of the bandstructure's orbital content in deciding the type of commensurate magnetic order stabilized within the itinerant scenario of iron-pnictides. Recent experimental findings in the tetragonal magnetic phase attest to the existence of the so-called charge and spin ordered density wave over the spin-vortex crystal phase, the latter of which tends to be favored in simplified band models of itinerant magnetism. Here we show that employing a multiorbital itinerant Landau approach based on realistic bandstructures can account for the experimentally observed magnet…
We performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of BaMn$_2$As$_2$ and BaMn$_2$Sb$_2$, which are isostructural to the parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ of the 122 family of ferropnictide superconductors. We show the existence of a strongly $k_z$-dependent band gap with a minimum at the Brillouin zone center, in agreement with their semiconducting properties. Despite the half-filling of the electronic 3$d$ shell, we show that the band structure in these materials is almost not renormalized from the Kohn-Sham bands of density functional theory. Our photon energy dependent study provi…
Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, supplemented by theoretical calculations has been applied to study the electronic structure of heavy-fermion material CeFePO, a homologue to the Fe-based high-temperature superconductors, and CeFeAs_0.7P_0.3O, where the applied chemical pressure results in a ferromagnetic order of the 4f moments. A comparative analysis reveals characteristic differences in the Fe-derived band structure for these materials, implying a rather different hybridization of valence electrons to the localized 4f orbitals. In particular, our results suggest that the ferromagne…
Both families of high $T_c$ superconductors, iron pnictides and cuprates, exhibit material dependence of superconductivity. Here, we study its origin within the spin fluctuation pairing theory based on multiorbital models that take into account realistic band structures. For pnictides, we show that the presence and absence of Fermi surface pockets is sensitive to the pnictogen height measured from the iron plane due to the multiorbital nature of the system, which is reflected to the nodeless/nodal form of the superconducting gap and $T_c$. Surprisingly, even for the cuprates, which is conventi…
Orbital polarization and electronic correlation are two essential aspects in understanding the normal state and superconducting properties of multiorbital FeAs-based superconductors. In this Letter, we present a systematical study on the orbital polarization of iron pnictides from weak to strong Coulomb correlations within the KRSB approach. The magnetic phase diagram of the two-orbital model for LaFeAsO clearly shows that the striped antiferromagnetic metallic phase with considerable orbital polarization exists over a wide doping range. The reversal of the orbital polarization occurs in the i…
We present a soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SX-ARPES) study of the stoichiometric pnictide superconductor LaRu2P2. The observed electronic structure is in good agreement with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. However, it is significantly different from its counterpart in high-temperature superconducting Fe-pnictides. In particular the bandwidth renormalization present in the Fe-pnictides (~2 - 3) is negligible in LaRu2P2 even though the mass enhancement is similar in both systems. Our results suggest that the superconductivity in LaRu2P2 has a different origi…
The discovery of high-$T_c$ superconductivity in the pnictides, materials with a Fermi surface determined by several bands, highlights the need to understand how superconductivity arises in multiband systems. In this effort, using symmetry considerations and mean-field approximations, we discuss how strong hybridization among orbitals may lead to both intra and interband pairing, and we present calculations of the spectral functions to guide the experimental search for this kind of state.
We present the results of extended theoretical LDA+DMFT calculations for a new iron-pnictide high temperature superconductor NaFeAs compared with the recent high quality angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) experiments on this system [1]. The universal manifestation of correlation effects in iron-pnictides is narrowing of conducting bands near the Fermi level. Our calculations demonstrate that for NaFeAs the effective mass is renormalized on average by a factor of the order of 3, in good agreement with ARPES data. This is essentially due to correlation effects on Fe-3d orbitals only and no add…
We study the correlation effects on the electronic structure and spin density wave order in Fe-pnictides. Using the multiorbital Hubbard model and Gutzwiller projection, we show that nonperturbative correlation effects are essential to stabilize the metallic spin density wave phase for the intermediate correlation strengths appropriate for pnictides. We find that the ordered moments depend sensitively on the Hund's rule coupling $J$ but weakly on the intraorbital Coulomb repulsion $U$, varying from $0.3μ_B$ to $1.5μ_B$ in the range $J=0.3\sim0.8$ eV for $U=3\sim4$ eV. We obtain the phase diagr…
The origin of the nematic state is an important puzzle to be solved in iron pnictides. Iron superconductors are multiorbital systems and these orbitals play an important role at low energy. The singular $C_4$ symmetry of $d_{zx}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals has a profound influence at the Fermi surface since the $Γ$ pocket has vortex structure in the orbital space and the X/Y electron pockets have $yz$/$zx$ components respectively. We propose a low energy theory for the spin--nematic model derived from a multiorbital Hamiltonian. In the standard spin--nematic scenario the ellipticity of the electron…
We review the search for a mediator of high-Tc superconductivity focusing on ARPES experiment. In case of HTSC cuprates, we summarize and discuss a consistent view of electronic interactions that provides natural explanation of both the origin of the pseudogap state and the mechanism for high temperature superconductivity. Within this scenario, the spin-fluctuations play a decisive role in formation of the fermionic excitation spectrum in the normal state and are sufficient to explain the high transition temperatures to the superconducting state while the pseudogap phenomenon is a consequence …
To understand the amazing variety of the superconducting states of Fe-based superconductors, we analyze the multiorbital Hubbard models for LaFeAsO and LiFeAs going beyond the random-phase approximation (RPA), by calculating the vertex correction (VC) and self-energy correction. Due to the spin+orbital mode coupling described by the VC, both orbital and spin fluctuations mutually develop, consistently with the experimental phase diagram with the orbital and magnetic orders. Due to both fluctuations, the s-wave gap function with sign-reversal ($s_{\pm}$-wave), without sign-reversal ($s_{++}$-wa…
Low energy electron diffraction (LEED) experiments, LEED simulations and finite slab density functional calculations are combined to study the cleavage surface of Co doped BaFe_{2-x}Co_{x}As_{2} (x = 0.1, 0.17). We demonstrate that the energy dependence of the LEED data can only be understood from a terminating 1/2 Ba layer accompanied by distortions of the underlying As-Fe_2-As block. As a result, surface related Fe 3d states are present in the electronic structure, which we identify in angle resolved photoemission experiments. The close proximity of the surface-related states to the bulk ban…
We analyze the interplay between the absence or presence of the nodes in the superconducting gap along electron Fermi surfaces (FSs) in Fe-pnictides, and 2Delta/T_c along hole FSs, measured by ARPES. We solve the set of coupled gap equations for 4-band and 5-band models of Fe-pnictides and relate the presence of the nodes to 2Δ/T_c being below a certain threshold. Using ARPES data for 2Δ/T_c, we find that optimally doped (BaK)Fe_2As_2 and Ba(FeCo)_2As_2 and likely nodeless, but iso-valent BaFe_2(AsP)_2 likely has nodes.
Considering model Hamiltonians that respect the symmetry properties of the pnictides, it is argued that pairing interactions that couple electrons at different orbitals with an orbital-dependent pairing strength inevitably lead to interband pairing matrix elements, at least in some regions of the Brillouin zone. Such interband pairing has not been considered of relevance in multiorbital systems in previous investigations. It is also observed that if, instead, a purely intraband pairing interaction is postulated, this requires that the pairing operator has the form $Δ^+(k)=f(k) \sum_α d^+_{k,α,…
We have conducted a comprehensive angle-resolved photoemission study on the normal state electronic structure of the Fe-based superconductor Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. We have identified four dispersive bands which cross the Fermi level and form two hole-like Fermi surfaces around $Γ$ and two electron-like Fermi surfaces around M. There are two nearly nested Fermi surface pockets connected by an antiferromagnetic ($π$, $π$) wavevector. The observed Fermi surfaces show small $k_z$ dispersion and a total volume consistent with Luttinger theorem. Compared to band structure calculations, the…
The interplay of high and low-energy mass renormalizations with band-shifts reflected by the positions of van Hove singularities (VHS) in the normal state spectra of the highest hole-overdoped and strongly correlated AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A122) with A = K, Cs is discussed phenomenologically based on ARPES data and GGA band-structure calculations with full spin-orbit coupling. The big increase of the Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$ from K122 to Cs122 is ascribed to an enhanced coupling to low-energy bosons in the vicinity of a quantum critical point to an unknown, yet incommensurate phase different from th…
The nematic state of the iron-based superconductors is studied in the undoped limit of the three-orbital ($xz$, $yz$, $xy$) spin-fermion model via the introduction of lattice degrees of freedom. Monte Carlo simulations show that in order to stabilize the experimentally observed lattice distortion and nematic order, and to reproduce photoemission experiments, {\it both} the spin-lattice and orbital-lattice couplings are needed. The interplay between their respective coupling strengths regulates the separation between the structural and Néel transition temperatures. Experimental results for the …
We report a Fe Kβx-ray emission spectroscopy study of local magnetic moments in the rare-earth doped iron pnictide Ca_{1-x}RE_xFe_2As_2 (RE=La, Pr, and Nd). In all samples studied the size of the Fe local moment is found to decrease significantly with temperature and goes from ~0.9 μ_B at T = 300 K to ~0.45 μ_B at T = 70 K. In the collapsed tetragonal (cT) phase of Nd- and Pr-doped samples (T<70K) the local moment is quenched, while the moment remains unchanged for the La-doped sample, which does not show lattice collapse. Our results show that Ca_{1-x}RE_xFe_2As_2 (RE= Pr and Nd) exhibits a s…
We investigate the electronic state and the superconductivity in the 5-orbital Hubbard model for iron pnictides by using the dynamical mean-field theory in conjunction with the Eliashberg equation. The renormalization factor exhibits significant orbital dependence resulting in the large change in the band dispersion as observed in recent ARPES experiments. The critical interactions towards the magnetic, orbital and superconducting instabilities are suppressed as compared with those from the random phase approximation (RPA) due to local correlation effects. Remarkably, the s++-pairing phase due…
Recent experiments on Zn-doped 122-type iron pnictides, Ba(Fe$_{1-x-y}$Co$_y$Zn$_x$)$_2$As$_2$, are challenging our understanding of electron doping the 122s and the interplay between doping and impurity scattering. To resolve this enigma, we investigate the disorder effects of nonmagnetic Zn impurities in the strong (unitary) scattering limit on various properties of the system in the $s_{\pm}$-wave superconducting pairing state. The lattice Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation (BdG) is solved self-consistently based on a minimal two-orbital model with an extended range of impurity concentrations. W…
The interplay of structural and electronic phases in iron-based superconductors is a central theme in the search for the superconducting pairing mechanism. While electronic nematicity, defined as the breaking of four-fold symmetry triggered by electronic degrees of freedom, is competing with superconductivity, the effect of purely structural orthorhombic order is unexplored. Here, using x-ray diffraction (XRD), we reveal a new structural orthorhombic phase with an exceptionally high onset temperature ($T_\mathrm{ort} \sim 250$ K), which coexists with superconductivity ($T_\mathrm{c} = 25$ K), …
In this paper we provide a comprehesive analysis of different properties of pnictides both in the normal and superconducting state, with a particular focus on the optimally-doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ system. We show that, by using the band dispersions experimentally measured by ARPES, a four-band Eliashberg model in the intermediate-coupling regime can account for both the measured hierarchy of the gaps and for several spectroscopic and thermodynamic signatures of low-energy renormalization. These include the kinks in the band dispersion and the effective masses determined via specifi…
Superconductivity in iron pnictides is studied by using a two-orbital Hubbard model in the large U limit. The Coulomb repulsion induces an orbital-dependent pairing between charge carriers. The pairing is found mainly from the scattering within the same Fermi pocket. The inter-pocket pair scatterings determine the symmetry of the superconductivity, which is extended s-wave at small Hund's coupling, and d-wave at large Hund's coupling and large U. The former is consistent with recent experiments of ARPES and Andreev reflection spectroscope.
A brief overview of the superconducting energy gap studies on 122-type family of iron pnictides is given. It seems that the situation in the hole-doped Ba1-xKxFe2As2 is well resolved. Most of the measurements including the presented here point-contact Andreev reflection spectra agree on existence of multiple nodeless gaps in the excitation spectrum of this multiband system. The gaps have basically two sizes - the small one with a strength up to the BCS weak coupling limit and the large one with a very strong coupling with 2Delta/kTc ~ 6 - 8. In the electron doped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 the most of t…
The discovery of iron pnictides and iron chalcogenides as a new class of unconventional superconductors in 2008 has generated an enourmous amount of experimental and theoretical work that identifies these materials as correlated metals with multiorbital physics, where magnetism, nematicity and superconductivity are competing phases that appear as a function of pressure and doping. A microscopic understanding of the appearance of these phases is crucial in order to determine the nature of superconductivity in these systems. Here we review our recent theoretical efforts to describe and understan…
In a wide variety of materials, such as copper oxides, heavy fermions, organic salts, and the recently discovered iron pnictides, superconductivity is found in close proximity to a magnetically ordered state. The character of the proximate magnetic phase is thus believed to be crucial for understanding the differences between the various families of unconventional superconductors and the mechanism of superconductivity. Unlike the AFM order in cuprates, the nature of the magnetism and of the underlying electronic state in the iron pnictide superconductors is not well understood. Neither density…
Iron-based superconductors have been found to exhibit an intimate interplay of orbital, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom, dramatically affecting their low-energy electronic properties, including superconductivity. Albeit the precise pairing mechanism remains unidentified, several candidate interactions have been suggested to mediate the superconducting pairing, both in the orbital and in the spin channel. Here, we employ optical spectroscopy (OS), angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), ab initio band-structure, and Eliashberg calculations to show that nearly optimally doped NaF…
Amongst the iron-based superconductors, LiFeAs is unrivalled in the simplicity of its crystal structure and phase diagram. However, our understanding of this canonical compound suffers from conflict between mutually incompatible descriptions of the material's electronic structure, as derived from contradictory interpretations of the photoemission record. Here, we explore the challenge of interpretation in such experiments. By combining comprehensive photon energy- and polarization- dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements with numerical simulations, we establish…
Cluster perturbation theory is used to calculate band structure, spectral functions, Fermi surface, and spin and charge susceptibilities for the two-orbital model of iron pnictides with the on-site multiorbital Hubbard interactions. Susceptibilities are calculated within the approximation combining the cluster perturbation theory for the self-energy corrections and the random-phase approximation (RPA) for the vertex renormalizations. Calculations for the small values of Hubbard repulsion $U \leq 2$ confirm that the rigid band approximation and RPA for the spin and charge susceptibilities are s…
Using angle resolved photoemission it is shown that the low lying electronic states of the iron pnictide parent compound EuFe$_2$As$_2$ are strongly modified in the magnetically ordered, low temperature, orthorhombic state compared to the tetragonal, paramagnetic case above the spin density wave transition temperature. Back-folded bands, reflected in the orthorhombic/ anti-ferromagnetic Brillouin zone boundary hybridize strongly with the non-folded states, leading to the opening of energy gaps. As a direct consequence, the large Fermi surfaces of the tetragonal phase fragment, the low temperat…
We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to study the electronic properties of CaFe2As2 - parent compound of a pnictide superconductor. We find that the structural and magnetic transition is accompanied by a three- to two-dimensional (3D-2D) crossover in the electronic structure. Above the transition temperature (Ts) Fermi surfaces around Gamma and X points are cylindrical and quasi-2D. Below Ts the former becomes a 3D ellipsoid, while the latter remains quasi-2D. This finding strongly suggests that low dimensionality plays an important role in understanding the superconducting…
We report a comparison study of LaOFeP and LaOFeAs, two parent compounds of recently discovered iron-pnictide superconductors, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Both systems exhibit some common features that are very different from well-studied cuprates. In addition, important differences have also been observed between these two ferrooxypnictides. For LaOFeP, quantitative agreement can be found between our photoemission data and the LDA band structure calculations, suggesting that a weak coupling approach based on an itinerant ground state may be more appropriate for understand…
We investigate the origin of exoticity in Fe-based systems via studying the Fermiology of CaFe2As2 employing Angle Resolved Photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). While the Fermi surfaces (FSs) at 200 K and 31 K are observed to exhibit two dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D) topology, respectively, the FSs at intermediate temperatures reveal emergence of the 3D topology at much lower temperature than the structural & magnetic phase transition temperature (170 K, for the sample under scrutiny). This leads to the conclusion that the evolution of FS topology is not directly driven by the str…
Motivated by the recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on FeSe and iron pnictide families of iron-based superconductors, we have studied the orbital nematic order and its interplay with antiferromagnetism within the two-orbital Hubbard model. We used random phase approximation (RPA) to calculate the dependence of the orbital and magnetic susceptibilities on the strength of interactions and electron density (doping). To account for strong electron correlations not captured by RPA, we further employed non-perturbative variational cluster approximation (VCA) capable of capturin…
We study the spin resonance peak in recently discovered iron-based superconductors. The resonance peak observed in inelastic neutron scattering experiments agrees well with predicted results for the extended $s$-wave ($s_\pm$) gap symmetry. Recent neutron scattering measurements show that there is a disparity between longitudinal and transverse components of the dynamical spin susceptibility. Such breaking of the spin-rotational invariance in the spin-liquid phase can occur due to spin-orbit coupling. We study the role of the spin-orbit interaction in the multiorbital model for Fe-pnictides an…
We report high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies of the electronic structure of BaFe$_2$As$_2$, which is one of the parent compounds of the Fe-pnictide superconductors. ARPES measurements have been performed at 20 K and 300 K, corresponding to the orthorhombic antiferromagnetic phase and the tetragonal paramagnetic phase, respectively. Photon energies between 30 and 175 eV and polarizations parallel and perpendicular to the scattering plane have been used. Measurements of the Fermi surface yield two hole pockets at the $Γ$-point and an electron pocket at each…
Using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group and two-leg ladders, we investigate an electronic two-orbital Hubbard model including plaquette diagonal hopping amplitudes. Our goal is to search for regimes where charges added to the undoped state form pairs, presumably a precursor of a superconducting state. For the electronic density $ρ=2$, i.e. the undoped limit, our investigations show a robust $(π,0)$ antiferromagnetic ground state, as in previous investigations. Doping away from $ρ=2$ and for large values of the Hund coupling $J$, a ferromagnetic region is found to be stable. Moreover, whe…
While the parent compounds of the cuprate high temperature superconductors (high-Tc's) are Mott insulators, the iron-pnictide high-Tc's are in the vicinity of a metallic spin density wave (SDW) state, which highlights the difference between these two families. However, insulating parent compounds were identified for the newly discovered KxFe2-ySe2. This raises an intriguing question as to whether the iron-based high-Tc's could be viewed as doped Mott insulators like the cuprates. Here we report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) evidence of two insulating and one semiconducting …
