We study the colour-magnitude relation (CMR) for a sample of 172 morphologically-classified E/S0 cluster galaxies from the ESO Distant Cluster Survey (EDisCS) at 0.4<z<0.8. The intrinsic colour scatter about the CMR is very small (0.076) in rest-frame U-V. Only 7% of the galaxies are significantly bluer than the CMR. The scarcity of blue S0s indicates that, if they are the descendants of spirals, these were already red when they became S0s. We observe no dependence of the CMR scatter with redshift or cluster velocity dispersion. This implies that by the time cluster E/S0s achieve their morphology, the vast majority have already joined the red sequence. We estimate the galaxy formation redshift z_F for each cluster and find that it does not depend on the cluster velocity dispersion. However, z_F increases weakly with cluster redshift. This trend becomes clearer when including higher-z clusters from the literature, suggesting that, at any given z, in order to have a population of fully-formed E and S0s they needed to have formed most of their stars 2-4 Gyr prior to observation. In other words, the galaxies that already have early-type (ET) morphologies also have reasonably-old stellar populations. This is partly a manifestation of the "progenitor bias", but also a consequence of the fact that the vast majority of the ETs in clusters (in particular the massive ones) were already red by the time they achieved their morphology. E and S0 galaxies exhibit very similar colour scatter, implying similar stellar population ages. We also find that fainter ETs finished forming their stars later, consistent with the cluster red sequence being built over time and the brightest galaxies reaching the red sequence earlier than fainter ones. Finally, we find that the ET cluster galaxies must have had their star formation truncated over an extended period of at least 1 Gyr. [abridged]
We take a sample of 24 elliptical and lenticular galaxies previously analysed by the SAURON project using three-integral dynamical models created with Schwarzschild's method, and re-analyse them using the made-to-measure (M2M) method of dynamical modelling. We obtain good agreement between the two methods in determining the dynamical mass-to-light (M/L) ratios for the galaxies with over 80% of ratios differing by < 10% and over 95% differing by < 20%. We show that (M/L)_M2M is approximately equal to (M/L)_Sch. For the global velocity dispersion anisotropy parameter delta, we find similar value…
The Bayesian MAMPOSSt mass/orbit modeling algorithm is used to jointly fit the distribution of elliptical, spiral (and irregular), and lenticular galaxies in projected phase space, on 3 stacked clusters (with normalized positions and velocities) of 54 regular clusters from the WINGS survey, with at least 30 member velocities. Our stacked clusters contain ~5000 galaxies with available velocities and morphological types. 30 runs of MAMPOSSt with different priors are presented. The highest MAMPOSSt likelihoods are obtained for generalized NFW models with steeper inner slope, free-index Einasto mo…
Elliptical (E) and ellicular (ES) galaxies in the M_bh-M_*,sph diagram, and a merger-driven explanation for the origin of ES galaxies, anti-truncated stellar discs in lenticular galaxies, and the Sersicification of E galaxy light profiles
We present a catalog of the 1525 most optically luminous galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with r-band luminosity L_r > 8L* and redshift z<0.3, including 84 super spirals, 15 super lenticulars, 14 super post-merger galaxies, and 1400 giant ellipticals. With mass in stars of 10^{11.3}-10^{12} M_sun, super spirals and lenticulars are the most massive disk galaxies currently known. The specific star formation rates of super spirals place them on or below the star-forming main sequence. They must have formed stars at a high rate throughout their history in order to grow their massi…
We investigate the stellar angular momentum of galaxies across the Hubble sequence from the CALIFA survey. The distribution of CALIFA elliptical and lenticular galaxies in the $λ_{\rm Re}-ε_{\rm e}$ diagram is consistent with that shown by the Atlas$^\mathrm{3D}$ survey. Our data, however, show that the location of spiral galaxies in this diagram is significantly different. We have found two families of spiral galaxies with particularly peculiar properties: (a) spiral galaxies with much higher $λ_{\rm Re}$ values than any elliptical and lenticular galaxy; (b) low-mass spiral galaxies with obse…
Repainting the colour-mass diagrams by unearthing the green mountain: dust-rich S0 galaxies in the colour-(galaxy stellar mass) diagram, and the colour-(black hole mass) relations for dust-poor versus dust-rich galaxies
The optical morphology of galaxies is strongly related to galactic environment, with the fraction of early-type galaxies increasing with local galaxy density. In this work we present the first analysis of the galaxy morphology-density relation in a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. We use a convolutional neural network, trained on observed galaxies, to perform visual morphological classification of galaxies with stellar masses $M_\ast > 10^{10} \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$ in the EAGLE simulation into elliptical, lenticular and late-type (spiral/irregular) classes. We find that EAGLE reproduces …
We explore the properties of early-type galaxies (ETGs), including ellipticals (E) and lenticulars (S0), in rich environments such as clusters of galaxies (Virgo and Coma). The L_24/L_K distribution of ETGs in both Virgo and Coma clusters shows that some S0s have a much larger L_24/L_K ratio (0.5 to ~2 dex) than the bulk of the ETG population. This could be interpreted as an enhanced star formation rate in these lenticulars. We compare the optical colors of galaxies in these two clusters and investigate the nature of these sources with a large L24/L_K ratio by looking at their spatial distribu…
The morphological types of 5840 galaxies were classified by a visual inspection of color images using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 (DR7) to produce a morphology catalog of a representative sample of local galaxies with $z<0.01$. The sample galaxies are almost complete for galaxies brighter than $r_{pet}=17.77$. Our classification system is basically the same as that of the Third Reference Catalog of Bright Galaxies with some simplification for giant galaxies. On the other hand, we distinguish fine features of dwarf elliptical-like galaxies to classify 5 subtypes: dwarf el…
We present radial tracks for four early-type galaxies with embedded intermediate-scale discs in a modified spin-ellipticity diagram. Here, each galaxy's spin and ellipticity profiles are shown as a radial track, as opposed to a single, flux-weighted aperture-dependent value as is common in the literature. The use of a single ellipticity and spin parameter is inadequate to capture the basic nature of these galaxies, which transition from fast to slow rotation as one moves to larger radii where the disc ceases to dominate. After peaking, the four galaxy's radial tracks feature a downturn in both…
Recovering the origins of lenticular galaxies can shed light on the understanding of galaxy formation and evolution, since they present properties that can be found in both elliptical and spiral galaxies. In this work we study the kinematics of the globular cluster (GC) systems of three lenticular galaxies located in low density environments (NGC 2768, NGC 3115 and NGC 7457), and compare them with the kinematics of planetary nebulae (PNe). The PNe and GC data come from the Planetary Nebulae Spectrograph and the SLUGGS Surveys. Through photometric spheroid-disc decomposition and PNe kinematics …

We present an analytical model to identify thin discs in galaxies, and apply this model to a sample of SDSS MaNGA galaxies. This model fits the velocity and velocity dispersion fields of galaxies with regular kinematics. By introducing two parameters $ζ$ related to the comparison of the model's asymmetric drift correction to the observed gas kinematics and $η$ related to the dominant component of a galaxy, we classify the galaxies in the sample as "disc-dominated", "non-disc-dominated", or "disc-free" indicating galaxies with a dominating thin disc, a non-dominating thin disc, or no thin disc …
In light of recent findings from the kinematic morphology-density relation, we investigate whether the same trends exist in the original morphology density relation, using the same data as Dressler. In addition to Dressler's canonical relations, we find that further refinements are possible when considering the average local projected density of galaxies in a cluster. Firstly, the distribution of ellipticals in a cluster depends on the relative local density of galaxies in that cluster: equivalent rises in the elliptical fraction occur at higher local densities for clusters with higher average…
Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) residing in the centers of galaxy clusters are typically quenched giant ellipticals. A recent study hinted that star-forming galaxies with large disks, so-called superluminous spirals and lenticulars, are the BCGs of a subset of galaxy clusters. Based on the existing optical data it was not possible to constrain whether the superluminous disk galaxies reside at the center of galaxy clusters. In this work, we utilize XMM-Newton X-ray observations of five galaxy clusters to map the morphology of the intracluster medium (ICM), characterize the galaxy clusters, de…
We utilise the DEIMOS instrument on the Keck telescope to measure the wide-field stellar kinematics of early-type galaxies as part of the SAGES Legacy Unifying Globulars and GalaxieS (SLUGGS) survey. In this paper, we focus on some of the lowest stellar mass lenticular galaxies within this survey, namely NGC 2549, NGC 4474, NGC 4459 and NGC 7457, performing detailed kinematic analyses out to large radial distances of $\sim 2-3$ effective radii. For NGC 2549, we present the first analysis of data taken with the SuperSKiMS (Stellar Kinematics from Multiple Slits) technique. To better probe kinem…
Classifying the morphologies of galaxies is an important step in understanding their physical properties and evolutionary histories. The advent of large-scale surveys has hastened the need to develop techniques for automated morphological classification. We train and test several convolutional neural network architectures to classify the morphologies of galaxies in both a 3-class (elliptical, lenticular, spiral) and 4-class (+irregular/miscellaneous) schema with a dataset of 14034 visually-classified SDSS images. We develop a new CNN architecture that outperforms existing models in both 3 and …
We present atmospheric gas entropy profiles for 40 early type galaxies and 110 clusters spanning several decades of halo mass, atmospheric gas mass, radio jet power, and galaxy type. We show that within $\sim 0.1R_{2500}$ the entropy profiles of low-mass systems, including ellipticals, brightest cluster galaxies, and spiral galaxies, scale approximately as $K\propto R^{2/3}$. Beyond $\sim 0.1R_{2500}$ entropy profiles are slightly shallower than the $K \propto R^{1.1}$ profile expected from gravitational collapse alone, indicating that heating by AGN feedback extends well beyond the central ga…
The lenticular galaxy ESO 243-49 hosts the ultraluminous X-ray source HLX-1, the best candidate intermediate mass black hole (IMBH) currently known. The environments of IMBHs remain unknown, however the proposed candidates include the nuclei of dwarf galaxies or globular clusters. Evidence at optical wavelengths points at HLX-1 being the remnant of an accreted dwarf galaxy. Here we report the Australia Telescope Compact Array radio observations of HI emission in and around ESO 243-49 searching for signatures of a recent merger event. No HI line emission is detected in ESO 243-49 with a 5$σ$ up…

We use globular cluster kinematics data, primarily from the SLUGGS survey, to measure the dark matter fraction ($f_{\rm DM}$) and the average dark matter density ($\left< ρ_{\rm DM} \right>$) within the inner 5 effective radii ($R_{\rm e}$) for 32 nearby early--type galaxies (ETGs) with stellar mass log $(M_*/\rm M_\odot)$ ranging from $10.1$ to $11.8$. We compare our results with a simple galaxy model based on scaling relations as well as with cosmological hydrodynamical simulations where the dark matter profile has been modified through various physical processes. We find a high $f_{\rm DM}$…
The formation and evolution of galaxies is imprinted on their stellar population radial gradients. Two recent articles present conflicting results concerning the mass dependence of the metallicity gradients for early-type dwarf galaxies. On one side, Spolaor et al. show a tight positive correlation between the total metallicity, Z/H and the mass. On the other side, in a distinct sample, we do not find any trend involving Fe/H (Koleva et al.). In order to investigate the origin of the discrepancy, we examine various factors that may affect the determination of the gradients: namely the sky subt…
We analyse the extended, ionized-gas emission of 24 early-type galaxies (ETGs) at $0<z<1$ from the ESO Distant Cluster Survey (EDisCS). We discuss different possible sources of ionization and favour star-formation as the main cause of the observed emission. 10 galaxies have disturbed gas kinematics, while 14 have rotating gas disks. In addition, 15 galaxies are in the field, while 9 are in the infall regions of clusters. This implies that, if the gas has an internal origin, this is likely stripped as the galaxies get closer to the cluster centre. If the gas instead comes from an external sourc…

It is well established that brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs), residing in the center of galaxy clusters, are typically massive and quenched galaxies with cD or elliptical morphology. An optical survey suggested that an exotic galaxy population, superluminous spiral and lenticular galaxies could be the BCGs of some galaxy clusters. Because the cluster membership and the centroid of a cluster cannot be accurately determined based solely on optical data, we followed up a sample of superluminous disk galaxies and their environment using XMM-Newton X-ray observations. Specifically, we explored sev…
We perform Jeans anisotropic modeling (JAM) on elliptical and spiral galaxies from the MaNGA DR13 sample. By comparing the stellar mass-to-light ratios estimated from stellar population synthesis (SPS) and from JAM, we find a similar systematic variation of the initial mass function (IMF) as in the earlier $\rm ATLAS^{3D}$ results. Early type galaxies (elliptical and lenticular) with lower velocity dispersions within one effective radius are consistent with a Chabrier-like IMF while galaxies with higher velocity dispersions are consistent with a more bottom heavy IMF such as the Salpeter IMF. …
We present a study of globular clusters (GCs) and other small stellar systems (SSSs) in the field of NGC3115, observed as part of the VEGAS imaging survey, carried out with the VST telescope. We use deep g and i data of NGC3115, a well-studied lenticular galaxy with excellent scientific literature. This is fundamental to test the methodologies, verify the results, and probe the capabilities of the VEGAS-SSS. Leveraging the large field of view of the VST allow us to accurately study of the distribution and properties of SSSs as a function of galactocentric distance Rgc, well beyond ~20 galaxy e…

While spiral and lenticular galaxies have large-scale disks extending beyond their bulges, and most local early-type galaxies with 10^{10} < M_*/M_Sun < 2x10^{11} contain a disk (e.g., ATLAS^3D), the early-type galaxies do possess a range of disk sizes. The edge-on, `intermediate-scale' disk in the `disky elliptical' galaxy NGC 1271 has led to some uncertainty as to what its spheroidal component is. Walsh et al. reported a directly measured black hole mass of 3x10^9 M_Sun for this galaxy; which they remarked was an order of magnitude greater than what they expected based on their derivation of…
We present photometric properties of 183 member galaxies in the Abell 426 cluster using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) imaging and spectroscopic observation. Detailed morphology based on visual classification followed by multi-component image decomposition of 179 galaxies is presented in the SDSS g, r, i-bands. More than 80 percent of the members are Early-type galaxies (ETGs), with elliptical, dwarf elliptical (dE), and lenticular morphology and follow the red-sequence in the color-magnitude diagram (CMD). With a few dEs and spirals in the blue cloud, the cluster CMD is nearly unimodal.T…

Using a slitless spectroscopy method with (a) the 8.2 m Subaru telescope and its FOCAS Cassegrain spectrograph, and (b) the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) unit 1 (Antu) and its FORS2 Cassegrain spectrograph, we have detected 326 planetary nebulae (PNs) in the giant Virgo elliptical galaxy NGC 4649 (M 60), and we have measured their radial velocities. After rejecting some PNs more likely to belong to the companion galaxy NGC 4647, we have built a catalog with kinematic information for 298 PNs in M 60. Using these radial velocities we have concluded that they support the presence of a dark matte…

Using deep, high-spatial resolution imaging from the HST ACS Coma Cluster Treasury Survey, we determine colour profiles of early-type galaxies in the Coma cluster. From 176 galaxies brighter than $M_\mathrm{F814W(AB)} = -15$ mag that are either spectroscopically confirmed members of Coma or identified by eye as likely members from their low surface brightness, data are provided for 142 early-type galaxies. Typically, colour profiles are linear against $\log(R)$, sometimes with a nuclear region of distinct, often bluer colour associated with nuclear clusters. Colour gradients are determined for…
I introduce $Profiler$, a new, user-friendly program written in $Python$ and designed to analyse the radial surface brightness profiles of galaxies. With an intuitive graphical user interface, $Profiler$ can accurately model a wide range of galaxies and galaxy components, such as elliptical galaxies, the bulges of spiral and lenticular galaxies, nuclear sources, discs, bars, rings, spiral arms, etc., with a variety of parametric functions routinely employed in the field (Sérsic, core-Sérsic, exponential, Gaussian, Moffat and Ferrers). In addition to these, $Profiler$ can employ the broken expo…
Reading the tea leaves in the $M_{\rm bh}$-$M_{\rm *,sph}$ and $M_{\rm bh}$-$R_{\rm e,sph}$ diagrams: dry and gaseous mergers with remnant angular momentum
Lenticular (S0) galaxies are galaxies that exhibit a bulge and disk component, yet lack any clear spiral features. With features considered intermediary between spirals and ellipticals, S0s have been proposed to be a transitional morphology, however their exact origin and nature is still debated. In this work, we study the redshift evolution of the S0 fraction out to $z \sim 1$ using deep learning to classify F814W ($i$-band) HST-ACS images of 85,378 galaxies in the Cosmological Evolution Survey (COSMOS). We classify galaxies into four morphological categories: elliptical (E), S0, spiral (Sp),…
We present the first large-scale study of the photometric and structural relations followed by early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the Antlia cluster. Antlia is the third nearest populous galaxy cluster after Fornax and Virgo (d $\sim 35$ Mpc). A photographic catalog of its galaxy content was built by Ferguson & Sandage in 1990 (FS90). Afterwards, we performed further analysis of the ETG population located at the cluster centre. Now, we extend our study covering an area four times larger, calculating new total magnitudes and colours, instead of isophotal photometry, as well as structural parameters …
The ``Spectroscopy and H-band Imaging of Virgo cluster galaxies'' (SHIVir) survey is an optical and near-infrared survey which combines SDSS photometry, deep H-band photometry, and long-slit optical spectroscopy for 190 Virgo cluster galaxies (VCGs) covering all morphological types over the stellar mass range log (M_*/M_Sun) = 7.8-11.5$. We present the spectroscopic sample selection, data reduction, and analysis for this SHIVir sample. We have used and optimised the \texttt{pPXF} routine to extract stellar kinematics from our data. Ultimately, resolved kinematic profiles (rotation curves and v…
We present results from a blind survey to identify strong gravitational lenses among the population of low-redshift early-type galaxies. The SINFONI Nearby Elliptical Lens Locator Survey (SNELLS) uses integral-field infrared spectroscopy to search for lensed emission line sources behind massive lens candidates at $z$<0.055. From 27 galaxies observed, we have recovered one previously-known lens (ESO325-G004) at $z$=0.034, and discovered two new systems, at $z$=0.031 and $z$=0.052. All three lens galaxies have high velocity dispersions (σ>300 km/s) and α-element abundances ([Mg/Fe]>0.3). From th…
Deep imaging, that is imaging capable of capturing very low surface brightness extended objects, is a quickly growing field of extragalactic astronomy. Not only can new types of faint objects be discovered, but deep images of bright galaxies are very valuable, too, since they reveal faint signs of past galaxy collisions, the tidal features. Such "archeological" record can be exploited for investigating how galaxies formed. In the MATLAS survey, we obtained extremely deep images of 177 nearby massive elliptical and lenticular galaxies using the 3.5m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. In our contri…
We present radial velocities (from Gemini/GMOS) of the second sample of ultra-compact dwarfs (UCDs) and bright globular clusters (GCs) in the Antlia cluster. Twenty-three objects are located around the giant elliptical NGC 3268, and one is close to the fainter lenticular NGC 3273. Together with previously found UCDs around NGC 3258 a total of 35 UCDs and bright GCs has been now identified in the Antlia cluster. Their colours and magnitudes are compared with those of the nuclei of dE,N galaxies already confirmed as Antlia members. For a subsample that lie on ACS images and are brighter than M_V…
There are several supervised machine learning methods used for the application of automated morphological classification of galaxies; however, there has not yet been a clear comparison of these different methods using imaging data, or a investigation for maximising their effectiveness. We carry out a comparison between several common machine learning methods for galaxy classification (Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), K-nearest neighbour, Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, and Neural Networks) by using Dark Energy Survey (DES) data combined with visual classification…
