High-order harmonic generation (HHG) is investigated theoretically in the over-the-barrier ionization (OBI) regime revealing the strong signature of interference between two separately ionized and separately propagating free wave packets of a single electron. The interference leads to the emission of coherent light at a photon energy corresponding to the kinetic-energy difference of the two recolliding electron quantum paths, thus complementary to the well-known classical three-step picture of HHG. As will be shown by time-frequency analysis of the emitted radiation, the process entirely dominates the coherent HHG emission after the atomic ground state has been depleted by a strong field. Moreover, it can be isolated from the continuum--bound harmonics via phase-matching.
We analyze the two-dimensional photoelectrons momentum distribution of Ar atom ionized by midinfrared laser pulses and mainly concentrate on the energy range below 2Up. By using a generalized quantum trajectory Monte Carlo (GQTMC) simulation and comparing with the numerical solution of time-dependent Schrodinger equation (TDSE), we show that in the deep tunneling regime, the rescattered electron trajectories plays unimportant role and the interplay between the intracycle and inter-cycle results in a ring-like interference pattern. The ring-like interference pattern will mask the holographic in…
We propose a two-dimensional interferometry based on electron wave packet interference with a cycle-shaped orthogonally polarized two-color laser field. With such method, sub-cycle and inter-cycle interferences can be disentangled into different direction in the measured photoelectron momentum spectra. With the cycle-shaped laser field, the Coulomb influence can be minimized and the overlapping of interference fringes with the complicate low-energy structures can be avoided as well. The contributions of excitation effect and long-range Coulomb potential can be traced in the Fourier domain of t…
A novel and universal interference structure is found in the photoelectron momentum distribution of atoms in intense infrared laser field. Theoretical analysis shows that this structure can be attributed to a new form of Coulomb-field-driven backward-scattering of photoelectrons in the direction perpendicular to the laser field, in contrast to the conventional rescattering along the laser polarization direction. This transverse backward-scattering process is closely related to a family of photoelectrons initially ionized within a time interval of less than 200 attosecond around the crest of th…
The method of the envelope Hamiltonian [K. Toyota, U. Saalmann, and J. M. Rost, New J. Phys. {\bf 17}, 073005~(2015)] is applied to further study a detachment dynamics of a model negative ion in one-dimension in high-frequency regime. This method is based on the Floquet approach, but the time-dependency of an envelope function is explicitly kept for arbitrary pulse durations. Therefore, it is capable of describing not only a photo absorption/emission but also a non-adiabatic transition which is induced by the time-varying envelope of the pulse. It was shown that the envelope Hamiltonian accura…
We examine the archetype of an interference experiment for Auger electrons: two electron wave packets are launched by inner-shell ionizing a krypton atom using two attosecond light pulses with a variable time delay. This setting is an attosecond realization of the Ramsey method of separated oscillatory fields. Interference of the two ejected Auger-electron wave packets is predicted, indicating that the coherence between the two pulses is passed to the Auger electrons. For the detection of the interference pattern an accurate coincidence measurement of photo- and Auger electrons is necessary. T…
We investigate electron momentum distributions from single ionization of Ar by two orthogonally polarized laser pulses of different color. The two-color scheme is used to experimentally control the interference between electron wave packets released at different times within one laser cycle. This intracycle interference pattern is typically hard to resolve in an experiment. With the two-color control scheme these features become the dominant contribution to the electron momentum distribution. Furthermore the second color can be used for streaking of the otherwise interfering wave packets estab…
Interference is one of the most fundamental features which characterizes quantum systems. Here we provide an exhaustive analysis of the interfere dynamics associated with wave-packet superpositions from both the standard quantum-mechanical perspective and the Bohmian one. From this analysis, clear and insightful pictures of the physics involved in this kind of processes are obtained, which are of general validity (i.e., regardless of the type of wave packets considered) in the understanding of more complex cases where interference is crucial (e.g., scattering problems, slit diffraction, quantu…
We present a theoretical investigation into the two-center interference in aligned H$_2^+$. The influence of the laser field on the recombination step is investigated by comparing laser-induced harmonic generation with harmonic generation from field-free collisions of Gaussian wave packets with the core. We find that for different Gaussian wave packets colliding with the molecule, the interference minimum occurs at the same alignment angle. The same result is obtained for the laser-induced spectrum when only a single electronic trajectory per harmonic contributes. When multiple electronic traj…
The time-dependent Schrödinger equation for the hydrogen atom and its interaction with coherent intense high-frequency short laser pulses is solved numerically exactly by propagating the single-electron wave packets. Thereby, the wavefunction is followed in space and time for times longer than the pulse duration. Results are explicitly shown for 3 and 10 fs pulses. Particular attention is paid to identifying the effect of dynamic interference of photoelectrons emitted with the same kinetic energy at different times during the rising and falling sides of the pulse predicted in [\emph{Ph.V. Deme…
Level-crossing spectroscopy involves lifting the degeneracy of an excited state and using the interference of two nearly degenerate levels to measure the excited state lifetime. Here we use the idea of interference between different pathways to study the momentum-dependent wave packet lifetime due an excited state level-crossing (conical intersection) in a molecule. Changes in population from the wave packet propagation are reflected in the detected fluorescence. We use a chirped pulse to control the wave packet momentum. Changing the chirp rate affects the transition to the lower state throug…
We study atomic autoionization processes in the time domain. With the emerging attosecond extreme vacuum ultraviolet and soft x-ray pulses, we first address how to characterize the time evolution of the decay of a discrete state into a degenerate continuum. A short pump beam generates a number of resonance states in a series and the nearby background continuum, and the resultant wave packet evolves with time until the full decay of the bound states. Taking the 2pns(^1P^o) resonance series embedded in the 2sEp(^1P^o) continuum in beryllium atom as an example, the time evolution of the autoioniz…
We investigate the orientation dependence of molecular high-order harmonic generation (HHG) both numerically and analytically. We show that the molecular recollision electronic wave packets (REWPs) in the HHG are closely related to the ionization potential as well as the particular orbital from which it ionized. As a result, the spectral amplitude of the molecular REWP can be significantly different from its reference atom (i.e., with the same ionization potential as the molecule under study) in some energy regions due to the interference between the atomic cores of the molecules. This finding…

We theoretically study dissociative ionization of H$_2^+$ exposed to strong linearly polarized few-cycle visible, near-infrared and midinfrared laser pulses. We find rich energy-sharing structures in the combined electron and nuclear kinetic energy spectra with features that are a priori at odds with simple energy conservation arguments. We explain the structures as interferences between wave packets released during different optical cycles, and during the same optical cycle, respectively. Both inter- and intracycle interference structures are clearly visible in the joint energy spectra. The s…
We apply wave packet methods to study an ion-trap system in the strong excitation regime imposing neither the rotating wave nor the Lamb-Dicke approximations. By this approach we show the existence of states with restricted phase space evolution, as a genuine consequence of quantum interference between wave packet fractions. A particular instance of such a state oscillates between maximal entanglement and pure disentanglement between the constitute subsystems. The characteristic crossover time is very rapid making them suitable for state preparations of EPR or Schrodinger cat states. Over long…
Several correlation and interference effects in strong-field physics are investigated. We show that the interference of continuum wave packets can be the dominant mechanism of high-harmonic generation (HHG) in the over-the-barrier regime. Next, we combine HHG with resonant x-ray excitation to force the recolliding continuum electron to recombine with a core hole rather than the valence hole from that it was previously tunnel ionized. The scheme opens up perspectives for nonlinear xuv physics, attosecond x-ray pulses, and spectroscopy of core orbitals. Then, a method is proposed to generate att…
A pulse of matter waves may dramatically change its shape when traversing an absorbing barrier with time-dependent transparency. Here we show that this effect can be utilized for controlled manipulation of spatially-localized quantum states. In particular, in the context of atom-optics experiments, we explicitly demonstrate how the proposed approach can be used to generate spatially shifted, split, squeezed and cooled atomic wave packets. We expect our work to be useful in devising new interference experiments with atoms and molecules and, more generally, to enable new ways of coherent control…
It is demonstrated that the wavelets can be used to considerably speed up simulations of the wave packet propagation in multiscale systems. Extremely high efficiency is obtained in the representation of both bound and continuum states. The new method is compared with the fast Fourier algorithm. Depending on ratios of typical scales of a quantum system in question, the wavelet method appears to be faster by a few orders of magnitude.
We investigate the alignment-dependent high-order harmonic spectrum generated from nonadiabatically aligned molecules around the first half rotational revival. It is found that the evolution of the molecular alignment is encoded in the structural minima. To reveal the relation between the molecular alignment and the structural minimum in the high-order harmonic spectrum, we perform an analysis based on the two-center interference model. Our analysis shows that the structural minimum position depends linearly on the inverse of the alignment parameter $<\cos^2θ>$. This linear relation indicates …
