We numerically solve the mass-less test scalar field equation on the space-time background of boson stars and black holes. In order to do so, we use a numerical domain that contains future null infinity. We achieve this construction using a scri-fixing conformal compactification technique based on hyperboloidal constant mean curvature foliations of the space-time and solve the conformally invariant wave equation. We present two results: the scalar field shows oscillations of the quasi- normal-mode type found for black holes only for boson star configurations that are compact, and no signs of tail decay is found in the parameter space we explored. Even though our results do not correspond to the master equation of perturbations of boson star solutions, they indicate that the parameter space of boson stars as black hole mimickers is restricted to compact configurations.
Self-interacting boson stars have been shown to alleviate the astrophysically low maximal mass of their non-self-interacting counterparts. We report some physical features of spinning self-interacting boson stars, namely their compactness, the occurence of ergo-regions and the scalar field profiles, for a sample of values of the coupling parameter. The results agree with the general picture that these boson stars are comparatively less compact than the non-self-interacting ones. We also briefly discuss the effect of scalar self-interactions on the properties of Kerr black holes with scalar hai…

We study properties of boson stars consisting of ultra-light scalar dark matter with repulsive self-interactions. We investigate the origin of the maximum mass of spherically symmetric stable stars which emerges only when solving the full equations of motion in curved space-time, but not when solving the approximated Schrödinger-Newton equations. When the repulsion is weak, the backreaction of the curvature on the scalars acts as an additional source of attraction and can overcome the repulsion, resulting in a maximum star mass and compactness. We also point out that the potential in a UV comp…
We study the spontaneous scalarization of spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat boson stars in the $(α{\cal R} + γ{\cal G}) ϕ^2$ scalar-tensor gravity model. These compact objects are made of a complex valued scalar field that has harmonic time dependence, while their space-time is static and they can reach densities and masses similar to that of supermassive black holes. We find that boson stars can be scalarized for both signs of the scalar-tensor coupling $α$ and $γ$, respectively. This is, in particular, true for boson stars that are {\it a priori} stable with respect to decay into in…
We give good approximate analytic solutions for spherical charged boson stars in the large scalar-self-coupling limit in general relativity. We show that if the charge $e$ and mass $m$ of the scalar field nearly satisfy the critical relation $e^2\approx Gm^2$ (where $G$ is the Newton constant), our analytic expressions for stable solutions agree well with the numerical solutions.
We present a compact theorem which reveals the fact that static spatially regular massive scalar fields with nonminimal coupling to gravity cannot form spherically symmetric asymptotically flat horizonless matter configurations. In particular, the no-go theorem rules out the existence of boson stars made of static scalar fields with generic values of the physical parameter $ξ$ which quantifies the coupling between the spacetime curvature and the massive bosonic fields.
We study solutions for boson stars in the multi-scalar field theory with global symmetry $[U(1)]^N$. The properties of the boson stars are investigated by the Newtonian approximation with the large coupling limit. Our purpose is to study the models bringing about exotic mass distributions which explain flat rotation curves of galaxies. We propose plausible models in which coupling matrices are associated with various graphs in graph theory.
Ultralight bosons are promising dark matter candidates and can trigger superradiant instabilities of spinning black holes (BHs), resulting in long-lived rotating "bosonic clouds" around the BHs and dissipating their energy through the emission of monochromatic gravitational waves (GWs). We focus on the scalar bosons minimally coupled with both isolated stellar-origin BHs (SBH) and their binary merger remnants, and perform Bayesian data analysis to search for the stochastic GW background from all the unstable modes that can trigger the superradiant instabilities using the data of Advanced LIGO …
The noninertial effect of rotating frames on the quantum dynamics of scalar bosons embedded in the background of a cosmic string is considered. In this work, scalar bosons are described by the Duffin--Kemmer--Petiau (DKP) formalism. Considering the DKP oscillator in this background the combined effects of a rotating frames and cosmic string on the equation of motion, energy spectrum and DKP spinor are analyzed and discussed in detail. Additionally, the effect of rotating frames on the scalar bosons localization is studied.
We study a new family of self-gravitating axially-symmetric, rotating boson stars in the two-component Friedberg-Lee-Sirlin model minimally coupled to Einstein gravity in four spacetime dimensions. In the flat space limit the boson stars tend to the corresponding Q-balls. Subject to the usual synchronization condition, the model admits spinning hairy black hole solutions with two different types of scalar hair. We here investigate parity-even and parity-odd boson stars and their associated hairy black holes. We explore the domain of existence of the solutions and address some of their physical…
There is increasing numerical evidence that scalar fields can form long-lived quasi-bound states around black holes. Recent perturbative and numerical relativity calculations have provided further confirmation in a variety of physical systems, including both static and accreting black holes, and collapsing fermionic stars. In this work we investigate this issue yet again in the context of gravitationally unstable boson stars leading to black hole formation. We build a large sample of spherically symmetric initial models, both stable and unstable, incorporating a self-interaction potential with…
The role of scalar boson exchange as a mediator of the fermionic dark particle interaction and the mass of dark particle on the bulk properties of fermionic dark stars including their moment of inertia and tidal deformability are studied. We have found that the role of the attractive nature of the scalar boson exchange and the fermionic dark particle mass can control the stiffness of the fermionic dark star equation of state. By increasing the strength of scalar boson coupling, the fermionic dark star becomes more compact. As a consequence, if scalar boson exchange contribution is included the…
We study the stability of charged solitons in 5-dimensional Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space-time. We show that for appropriate choices of the parameters of the model these solutions become unstable to form scalar hair. We find that the existence of charged solitons with scalar hair depends crucially on the charge and the mass of the scalar field. We investigate the dependence of the spectrum of solutions on the mass of the scalar field in detail. For positive mass of the scalar field the hairy solitons can be interpreted as charged boson stars. We find that for sufficiently small value of the charg…
We study the stability of rotating scalar boson stars, comparing those made from a simple massive complex scalar (referred to as mini boson stars), to those with several different types of nonlinear interactions. To that end, we numerically evolve the nonlinear Einstein-Klein-Gordon equations in 3D, beginning with stationary boson star solutions. We show that the linear, non-axisymmetric instability found in mini boson stars with azimuthal number $m=1$ persists across the entire parameter space for these stars, though the timescale diverges in the Newtonian limit. Therefore, any boson star wit…
We study boson stars in a theory of complex scalar field coupled to Einstein gravity with the potential: $V(|Φ|) := m^{2} |Φ|^2 +2 λ|Φ|$ (where $m^2$ and $λ$ are positive constant parameters). This could be considered either as a theory of massive complex scalar field coupled to gravity in a conical potential or as a theory in the presence of a potential which is an overlap of a parabolic and a conical potential. We study our theory with positive as well as negative values of the cosmological constant $Λ$. Boson stars are found to come in two types, having either ball-like or shell-like charge…
In this paper, we re-investigate the stationary, soliton-like solutions in the model of the Einstein gravity coupled to a free and complex scalar field, which have been known as mini-boson stars. With numerical method, we find that in addition to the usual single mini-boson star solution, there exist a novel family of solutions interpreted as chains of boson stars, which is made of some boson stars along the symmetry axis. We show the configuration of two types of chains, including an even number of constituents and an odd number of constituents. Furthermore, we also study the effect of the fr…
We discuss boson stars and neutron stars, respectively, in a scalar-tensor gravity model with an explicitly time-dependent real scalar field. While the boson stars in our model -- in contrast to the neutron stars -- do not possess a hard core, we find that the qualitative effects of the formation of scalar hair are similar in both cases : the presence of the gravity scalar allows both type of stars to exist for larger central density as well as larger mass at given radius than their General Relativity counterparts. In particular, we find new types of neutron stars with scalar hair which have r…
We study boson shells and boson stars in a theory of complex scalar field coupled to the $U(1)$ gauge field $A_μ$ and Einstein gravity with the potential: $V(|Φ|) := \frac{1}{2} m^{2} \left(|Φ|+ a \right)^2$. This could be considered either as a theory of massive complex scalar field coupled to electromagnetic field and gravity in a conical potential or as a theory in the presence of a potential which is an overlap of a parabolic and a conical potential. Our theory has a positive cosmological constant $(Λ:= 4 πG m^2 a^2)$. Boson stars are found to come in two types, having either ball-like or …
Clouds of ultralight bosons - such as axions - can form around a rapidly spinning black hole, if the black hole radius is comparable to the bosons' wavelength. The cloud rapidly extracts angular momentum from the black hole, and reduces it to a characteristic value that depends on the boson's mass as well as on the black hole mass and spin. Therefore, a measurement of a black hole mass and spin can be used to reveal or exclude the existence of such bosons. Using the black holes released by LIGO and Virgo in their GWTC-2, we perform a simultaneous measurement of the black hole spin distribution…
The relativistic quantum motion of scalar bosons under the influence of a full vector (minimal $A^μ$ and nonminimal $X^μ$) and scalar ($V_{s}$) interactions embedded in the background of a cosmic string is explored in the context of the Klein-Gordon equation. Considering Coulomb interactions, the effects of this topological defect in equation of motion, phase shift and S-matrix are analyzed and discussed. Bound-state solutions are obtained from poles of the S-matrix and it is shown that bound-state solutions are possible only for a restrict range of coupling constants.
Gravitational-wave (GW) detections of binary neutron star coalescences play a crucial role to constrain the microscopic interaction of matter at ultrahigh density. Similarly, if boson stars exist in the universe their coalescence can be used to constrain the fundamental coupling constants of a scalar field theory. We develop the first coherent waveform model for the inspiral of boson stars with quartic interactions. The waveform includes coherently spin-induced quadrupolar and tidal-deformability contributions in terms of the masses and spins of the binary and of a single coupling constant of …
