Blazars have been regarded as one of the most powerful sources of the highest energy cosmic rays and also their byproducts, neutrinos. Provided that a magnetized filamentary system is established in a blazar jet as well, we could apply the mechanism of multi-stage diffusive shock acceleration to a feasible TeV emitter, Mrk 501 to evaluate the achievable maximum energy of protons. Taking conceivable energy restriction into account systematically, it seems adequate to say that EeV-protons are produced at this site by our present model. We also estimate neutrino fluxes generated by these accelerated protons and discuss the detectability based on an updated kilometre-scale telescope such as IceCube.
The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Gamma-Ray Observatory surveys the very high energy sky in the $\sim300$ to 100 TeV energy range and has detected two high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lacertae objects, Markarian 421 and Markarian 501 in a period of time of 837 days between June 2015 and December 2017. In this work, we present the detailed time-average spectral analysis. Using an extragalactic background light model, we address the difference in the intrinsic spectral properties between the two blazars above 1 TeV, preliminary results show that the intrinsic spectrum of Mrk 421 is better descr…
The TeV blazar Markarian 421 underwent multi-TeV flaring during April 2004 and simultaneously observed in x-ray and TeV energies. It was observed that the TeV outbursts had no counterparts in the lower energies, which implies that this might be an orphan flare. In the context of hadronic model, we have shown that this multi-TeV flaring can be produced due to the interaction of Fermi-accelerated protons of energy $\lesssim 168$ TeV with the background photons in the low energy tail of the synchrotron self-Compton spectrum of the blazar jet. We fit very well the flaring spectrum with this model.…
We investigate the location of the radio jet bases ("radio cores") of blazars in radio images, and their stationarity by means of dense very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations. In order to measure the position of a radio core, we conducted 12 epoch astrometric observation of the blazar Markarian 421 with the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry at 22 GHz immediately after a large X-ray flare, which occurred in the middle of 2011 September. For the first time, we find that the radio core is not stationary but rather changes its location toward 0.5 mas downstream. This angular scal…
An updated analysis of a targeted search for high-energy neutrinos from Markarian 421 and Markarian 501 is reported. They are two of the closest and brightest extragalactic sources in the TeV band. In contrast to other types of active galactic nuclei, BL Lacs are characterized by rapid and large-amplitude flux variability. Such radio-loud active galactic nuclei are candidate sources of the observed high-energy cosmic rays. Because their jet is collimated to our line of sight, the hadronic interactions with the surrounding medium can produce an accompanying neutrino and gamma-ray flux. The rece…

In this work we present a polarization analysis at radio frequencies of Markarian 421, one of the closest (z=0.03) TeV blazars. The observations were obtained, both in total and in polarized intensity, with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 15, 24, and 43 GHz throughout 2011, with one observation per month (for a total of twelve epochs). We investigate the magnetic field topology and the polarization structure on parsec scale and their evolution with time. We detect polarized emission both in the core and in the jet region, and it varies with frequency, location and time. In the core regi…
It is notoriously difficult to organize simultaneous observations from space and from the ground. This is particularly so at GeV-TeV energies where the space observations from all sky telescopes and the ground-based observations (mostly using the atmospheric Cherenkov technique). Because of observing constraints, the latter observations are limited to "snap-shots" of sources with short exposure times. For the past several years the observing program with the Whipple Observatory 10m Gamma-ray Telescope has been devoted to the observation of several bright TeV gamma-ray emitting AGN (including M…
The Hight Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Gamma-Ray Observatory monitors the gamma-ray sky in the energy range from 100 GeV to 100 TeV and has detected two very high energy (VHE) blazars: Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) and Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) in 1.5 years of observations. In this work, we present the spectral analysis above 1 TeV of both sources using a maximum likelihood method and an artificial neural network as an energy estimator. The main objectives are to constrain the spectral curvature of Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 at $\sim$5 TeV using the EBL models from Gilmore et al. (2012) and Franceschini e…
Markarian 421 is a high-peaked BL Lac object and it has undergone many strong outbursts since its discovery as a TeV source in 1992. Markarian 421 has been stud- ied intensively and was observed by various Cherenkov tele- scope arrays ever since. The outbursts of April 2004 observed by the Whipple telescope and of February 2010 by the HESS telescopes are explained well in this work by using the photohadronic model. To account for the attenuation of these high- energy gamma-rays by the extragalactic background light (EBL), we use template EBL models. The intrinsic spectrum of each epoch is diff…
Since September 2005, the Whipple 10m Gamma-ray Telescope has been operated primarily as a blazar monitor. The five Northern Hemisphere blazars that have already been detected at the Whipple Observatory, Markarian 421, H1426+428, Markarian 501, 1ES 1959+650 and 1ES 2344+514, are monitored routinely each night that they are visible. We report on the Markarian 421 observations taken from November 2005 to June 2006 in the gamma-ray, X-ray, optical and radio bands. During this time, Markarian 421 was found to be variable at all wavelengths probed. Both the variability and the correlations among di…
Markarian Multiwavelength Data Center (MMDC): A Tool for Retrieving and Modeling Multi-temporal, Multi-wavelength and Multi-messenger Data from Blazar Observations
We report the results obtained for the AGN Markarian 421 by model-fitting the data in the visibility plane, studing the proper motion of jet components, the light curve, and the spectral index of the jet features. We compare the radio data with optical light curves obtained at the Steward Observatory, considering also the optical polarization information. Mrk 421 has a bright nucleus and a one-sided jet extending towards the north-west for a few parsecs. The model-fits show that brightness distribution is well described using 6-7 circular Gaussian components, four of which are reliably identif…
Markarian 501 is a high-peaked BL Lacertae object and has undergone many major outburst since its discovery in 1996. As a part of the multiwavelength campaign, in the year 2009 this blazar was observed for 4.5 months from March 9 to August 1 and during the period April 17 to May 5 it was observed by both space and ground based observatories covering the entire electromagnetic spectrum. A very strong high energy $γ$-ray flare was observed on May 1 by Whipple telescope in the energy range 317 GeV to 5 TeV and the flux was about 10 times higher than the baseline flux. We use the photohadronic mod…
Blazars are a subclass of AGN and flaring in multi-TeV gamma-ray seems to be the major activity in high energy blazars a subgrup of blazars. Flaring is also unpredictable and switches between quiescent and active states involving different time scales and fluxes. While in some high energy blazars a strong temporal correlation between X-ray and multi-TeV gamma-ray has been observed, outbursts in some other have no low energy counterparts and explanation of such extreme activity needs to be addressed through different mechanisms as it is not understood well. The extragalactic background light (E…
Markarian 421 is the nearest high-energy peaked blazar and also is the first extragalactic source to be detected in multi-TeV $γ$-rays. It has been observed in multiwavelength for exceptionally long period of time with dense monitoring and several major outbursts have been detected from this source. In March 2010, the source was in a high state of activity and was observed in multiwavelength by various telescopes for 13 consecutive days. During this period the position of the synchrotron peak was found to be above $10^{17}$ Hz and also the position of the second peak was shifted towards higher…
The very high energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray blazar Markarian 501 has a history of extreme spectral variability and is an excellent laboratory for studying the physical processes within the jets of active galactic nuclei. A short term multi-wavelength study of Markarian 501 was coordinated in March 2009 using the Suzaku X-ray satellite as well as the VERITAS and MAGIC experiments to cover the critical X-ray and VHE gamma-ray bands. The results of the quiescent-state observations with VERITAS and Suzaku are combined with public data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and compared to …
We present the X-ray variability properties of the X-ray and TeV bright blazar Mrk 421 with a ~60 ks long XMM-Newton observation performed on November 9-10, 2005. The source experienced a pronounced flare, of which the inter-band time lags were determined with a very high confidence level. The soft (0.6-0.8 keV) X-ray variations lagged the hard (4-10 keV) ones by 1.09 ks, and the soft lag increases with increasing difference in the photon energy. The energy-dependent soft lags can be well fitted with the difference of the energy-dependent cooling timescales of the relativistic electron distrib…
The high energy blazar, Markarian 501 was observed as a part of multi-instrument and multiwavelength campaign spanning the whole electromagnetic spectrum for 4.5 months during March 15 to August 1, 2009. On May 1, Whipple 10m telescope observed a very strong $γ$-ray flare in a time interval of about 0.5 h. Apart from this flare, high state and low state emissions were also observed by Whipple, VERITAS and MAGIC telescopes. Using the photohadronic model and accounting for the absorption of the extragalactic background light (EBL) to these very high energy $γ$-rays, excellent fits are obtained f…
We report on the gamma-ray activity of the high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lacertae object Mrk 421 during the first 1.5 years of Fermi operation, from 2008 August 5 to 2010 March 12. We find that the Large Area Telescope (LAT) gamma-ray spectrum above 0.3 GeV can be well-described by a power-law function with photon index Gamma=1.78 +/- 0.02 and average photon flux F(>0.3 GeV)=(7.23 +/- 0.16) x 10^{-8} ph cm^{-2} s^{-1}. Over this time period, the Fermi-LAT spectrum above 0.3 GeV was evaluated on 7-day-long time intervals, showing significant variations in the photon flux (up to a factor ~3 from th…
We report on our observations of the parsec-scale radio jet structures of five blazars that have been detected by ground-based TeV gamma-ray telescopes. These five blazars all belong to the class of high-frequency peaked BL Lac objects (HBLs), which are the most common blazar type detected at the TeV energy range. Because of their relative faintness in the radio, these HBLs are not well represented in other radio blazar surveys. Our observations consist of five epochs of Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) imaging from 2006 to 2009, of each of the five blazars 1ES 1101-232, Markarian 180, 1ES 1218…
We have observed the blazar Markarian 421 with the TACTIC $γ$-ray telescope at Mt. Abu, India, from 22 November 2009 to 16 May 2010 for 265 hours. Detailed analysis of the data so recorded revealed presence of a TeV $γ$-ray signal with a statistical significance of 12.12$σ$ at $E_γ\geq$ 1 TeV. We have estimated the time averaged differential energy spectrum of the source in the energy range 1.0 - 16.44 TeV. The spectrum fits well with the power law function of the form ($dF/dE=f_0 E^{-Γ}$) with $f_0=(1.39\pm0.239)\times 10^{-11}cm^{-2}s^{-1}TeV^{-1}$ and $Γ=2.31\pm0.14$.
Multiwavelength variability of blazars offers indirect insight into their powerful engines and on the mechanisms through which energy is propagated from the centre down the jet. The BL Lac object Mkn 421 is a TeV emitter, a bright blazar at all wavelengths, and therefore an excellent target for variability studies. Mkn 421 was observed by INTEGRAL and Fermi-LAT in an active state on 16-21 April 2013. Well sampled optical, soft, and hard X-ray light curves show the presence of two flares. The average flux in the 20-100 keV range is 9.1e-11 erg/s/cm2 (~4.5 mCrab) and the nuclear average apparent…
The oscillation of photons and axion-like particles (ALPs) in the astrophysical magnetic fields could modify the measured very high energy (VHE; $\mathcal{E}\gtrsim 100\, \rm GeV$) $γ$-ray spectra of the blazar sources. In this paper, we use the VHE $γ$-ray observations of the blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) measured by MAGIC and Fermi-LAT in 2017 with four phases to constrain the ALP. We give the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these phases under the null and ALP hypotheses. We also test the effects of the $γ$-ray blazar intrinsic spectra models on the ALP constraints. No significant r…
Long TeV $γ$-ray campaigns have been carried out to study the spectrum, variability and duty cycle of the BL Lac object Markarian 421. These campaigns have given some evidence of the presence of protons in the jet: i) Its spectral energy distribution which shows two main peaks; one at low energies ($\sim$ 1 keV) and the other at high energies (hundreds of GeV), has been described by using synchrotron proton blazar model. ii) The study of the variability at GeV $γ$-rays and X-rays has indicated no significant correlation. iii) TeV $γ$-ray detections without activity in X-rays, called "orphan fl…
The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Gamma-Ray Observatory surveys the very high energy sky in the 300 GeV to $>100$ TeV energy range. HAWC has detected two blazars above $11σ$, Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) and Markarian 501 (Mrk 501). The observations are comprised of data taken in the period between June 2015 and July 2018, resulting in a $\sim 1038$ days of exposure. In this work we report the time-averaged spectral analysis for both sources above 0.5 TeV. Taking into account the flux attenuation due to the extragalactic background light (EBL), the intrinsic spectrum of Mrk 421 is described …
In this work we interpret and discuss the time variable rotation measure (RM) found, for the first time over a 1-yr period, in the core region of a blazar. These results are based on a one-year, multi-frequency (15, 24, and 43 GHz) Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) monitoring of the TeV blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421). We investigate the Faraday screen properties and its location with respect to the jet emitting region. Given that the 43 GHz radio core flux density and the RM time evolution suggest a similar trend, we explore the possible connection between the RM and the accretion rate. Among th…
The very high energy (VHE; E $>$ 100 GeV) blazar Markarian 501 was observed between April 17 and May 5 (MJD 54938--54956), 2009, as part of an extensive multi-wavelength campaign from radio to VHE. Strong VHE $γ$-ray activity was detected on May 1st with Whipple and VERITAS, when the flux (E $>$ 400 GeV) increased to 10 times the pre-flare baseline flux ($3.9{\times 10^{-11}}~{\rm ph~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}}$), reaching five times the flux of the Crab Nebula. This coincided with a decrease in the optical polarization and a rotation of the polarization angle by 15$^{\circ}$. This VHE flare showed a fast…
We present the results of extensive modeling of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the closest blazar (z=0.031) Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) during a giant outburst in February 2010. The source underwent rapid flux variations in both X-rays and very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays as it evolved from a low-flux state on 2010 February 13-15 to a high-flux state on 2010 February 17. During this period, the source exhibited significant spectral hardening from X-rays to VHE gamma-rays while exhibiting a "harder when brighter" behavior in these energy bands. We reproduce the broadband SED using a t…
In this paper we investigate the properties of a sample of six BL Lacs by fitting their spectra using our inhomogeneous jet model with an accelerating, magnetically dominated, parabolic base, which transitions to a slowly decelerating conical jet with a geometry based on observations of M87. Our model is able to fit very well to the simultaneous multiwavelength spectra of all the BL Lacs including radio observations. We find that the BL Lacs have lower jet powers and bulk Lorentz factors than the sample of Compton-dominant blazars investigated in Paper III, consistent with the blazar sequence.…
We report on the gamma-ray activity of the blazar Mrk 501 during the first 480 days of Fermi operation. We find that the average LAT gamma-ray spectrum of Mrk 501 can be well described by a single power-law function with a photon index of 1.78 +/- 0.03. While we observe relatively mild flux variations with the Fermi-LAT (within less than a factor of 2), we detect remarkable spectral variability where the hardest observed spectral index within the LAT energy range is 1.52 +/- 0.14, and the softest one is 2.51 +/- 0.20. These unexpected spectral changes do not correlate with the measured flux va…
Blazars are a subclass of active galactic nuclei (AGN) that have a relativistic jet with a small viewing angle towards the observer. Recent results based on hadronic scenarios have motivated an ongoing discussion of how a blazar can produce high energy neutrinos during a flaring state and which scenario can successfully describe the observed gamma-ray behaviour. Markarian 421 is one of the closest and brightest objects in the extragalactic gamma-ray sky and showed flaring activity over a 14-day period in March 2010. In this work, we describe the performed analysis of \textit{Fermi}-LAT data fr…
The very high energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) blazar Markarian 501 has a well-studied history of extreme spectral variability and is an excellent laboratory for studying the physical processes within the jets of active galactic nuclei. However, there are few detailed multiwavelength studies of Markarian 501 during its quiescent state, due to its low luminosity. A short-term multiwavelength study of Markarian 501 was coordinated in March 2009, focusing around a multi-day observation with the Suzaku X-ray satellite and including γ-ray data from VERITAS, MAGIC, and the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope w…
Prompted by the increasing interest of axion-like particles (ALPs) for very-high-energy (VHE) astrophysics, we have considered a full scenario for the propagation of a VHE photon/ALP beam emitted by a BL Lac and reaching us in the light of the most up-to-date astrophysical information and for energies up to above $100 \, \rm TeV$. During its trip, the beam -- generated in a small region of a BL Lac jet -- crosses a variety of magnetic structures in very different astronomical environments: the BL Lac jet, the host elliptical galaxy, the extragalactic space and the Milky Way. We have taken an e…
Rapid and luminous flares of non-thermal radiation observed in blazars require an efficient mechanism of energy dissipation and particle acceleration in relativistic active galactic nuclei (AGN) jets. Particle acceleration in relativistic magnetic reconnection is being actively studied by kinetic numerical simulations. Relativistic reconnection produces hard power-law electron energy distributions N(gamma) = N_0 gamma^(-p) exp(-gamma/gamma_max) with index p -> 1 and exponential cut-off Lorentz factor gamma_max ~ sigma in the limit of magnetization sigma = B^2/(4 pi w) >> 1 (where w is the rela…
Mrk501 is a very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray blazar located at z=0.034. During a period of two weeks in July 2014, the highest X-ray activity of Mrk501 was observed in ~14 years of operation of the Neil Gehrels Swift Gamma-ray Burst Observatory. We characterize the broadband variability of Mrk501 from radio to VHE gamma rays, and evaluate whether it can be interpreted within theoretical scenarios widely used to explain the broadband emission from blazars. The temporal evolution of the most prominent and variable segments of the SED is described with a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model wi…
A multiwavelength campaign was organized to take place between March and July of 2012. Excellent temporal coverage was obtained with more than 25 instruments, including the MAGIC, FACT and VERITAS Cherenkov telescopes, the instruments on board the Swift and Fermi spacecraft, and the telescopes operated by the GASP-WEBT collaboration. Mrk 501 showed a very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray flux above 0.2 TeV of $\sim$0.5 times the Crab Nebula flux (CU) for most of the campaign. The highest activity occurred on 2012 June 9, when the VHE flux was $\sim$3 CU, and the peak of the high-energy spectral com…
