Optimization of the residence time of a Brownian particle in a spherical subdomain

In this communication, we show that the residence time of a Brownian particle, defined as the cumulative time spent in a given region of space, can be optimized as a function of the diffusion coefficient. We discuss the relevance of this effect to several schematic experimental situations, classified in the nature -- random or deterministic -- both of the observation time and of the starting position of the Brownian particle.

Mean joint residence time of two Brownian particles in a sphere

We calculate the mean joint residence time of two Brownian particles in a sphere, for very general initial conditions. In particular, we focus on the dependence of this residence time as a function of the diffusion coefficients of the two particles. Our results can be useful for describing kinetics of bimolecular diffusion controlled reactions activated by catalytic sites.

Waiting and Residence Times of Brownian Interface Fluctuations

We report on the residence times of capillary waves above a given height $h$ and on the typical waiting time in between such fluctuations. The measurements were made on phase separated colloid-polymer systems by laser scanning confocal microscopy. Due to the Brownian character of the process, the stochastics vary with the chosen measurement interval $Δt$. In experiments, the discrete scanning times are a practical cutoff and we are able to measure the waiting time as a function of this cutoff. Residence time statistics for $N$ blinking quantum dots and other stochastic processes

We present a study of residence time statistics for $N$ blinking quantum dots. With numerical simulations and exact calculations we show sharp transitions for a critical number of dots. In contrast to expectation the fluctuations in the limit of $N \to \infty$ are non-trivial. Besides quantum dots our work describes residence time statistics in several other many particle systems for example $N$ Brownian particles. Our work provides a natural framework to detect non-ergodic kinetics from measurements of many blinking chromophores, without the need to reach the single molecule limit.

We study the statistical properties of first-passage time functionals of a one dimensional Brownian motion in the presence of stochastic resetting. Residence Time Statistics for Normal and Fractional Diffusion in a Force Field

We investigate statistics of occupation times for an over-damped Brownian particle in an external force field. A backward Fokker-Planck equation introduced by Majumdar and Comtet describing the distribution of occupation times is solved. Relation between Stochastic Resonance and Synchronization of Passages in a Double-Well System

We calculate, numerically, the residence times (and their distribution) of a Brownian particle in a two-well system under the action of a periodic, saw-tooth type, external field. We define hysteresis in the system. The hysteresis loop area is shown to be a good measure of synchronization of passages from one well to the other. We establish connection between this stochastic synchronization and stochastic resonance in the system.
