A multi-dimensional resolution of singularities with applications to analysis

We formulate a resolution of singularities algorithm for analyzing the zero sets of real-analytic functions in dimensions $\geq 3$. Rather than using the celebrated result of Hironaka, the algorithm is modeled on a more explicit and elementary approach used in the contemporary algebraic geometry literature. As an application, we define a new notion of the height of real-analytic functions, compute the critical integrability index and obtain the sharp growth rate of sublevel sets. This also leads to a characterization of the oscillation index of scalar oscillatory integrals with real-analytic phases in all dimensions.

Resolution of singularities, asymptotic expansions of oscillatory integrals, and related phenomena

The elementary resolution of singularities algorithm of the author's earlier paper (math.CA/0609217) is developed further, replacing the quasibump functions in the blown up coordinates with the characteristic function of a rectangle times a smooth function. Such functions are easier to deal with, and as application the existence of asymptotic expansions for oscillatory integrals and related objects is given an elementary proof. In addition, some more detailed information about these expansions is given.

Sharp estimates for trilinear oscillatory integrals and an algorithm of two-dimensional resolution of singularities

We obtain sharp estimates for certain trilinear oscillatory integrals. In particular, we extend Phong and Stein's seminal result to a trilinear setting. This result partially answers a question raised by Christ, Li, Tao and Thiele concerning the sharp estimates for certain multilinear oscillatory integrals. The method in this paper relies on a self-contained algorithm of resolution of singularities in $\mathbb R^2$, which may be of independent interest.

Painleve Test and the Resolution of Singularities for Integrable Equations

We prove that under a very general setting, a system of ODE passes the Painleve test if and only if there is a good change of variable, such that the pole singularity solutions are converted to regular power series, while the converted ODE system is still kept regular. A consequence is that all principal balances of an ODE system converge. We also prove that the results are natural with respect to Hamiltonian systems.

Toric resolution of singularities in a certain class of $C^{\infty}$ functions and asymptotic analysis of oscillatory integrals

In a seminal work of A. N. Varchenko, the behavior at infinity of oscillatory integrals with real analytic phase is precisely investigated by using the theory of toric varieties based on the geometry of the Newton polyhedron of the phase. The purpose of this paper is to generalize his results to the case that the phase is contained in a certain class of $C^{\infty}$ functions. A Coordinate-Dependent Local Resolution of Singularities with Applications

In this paper, a geometric resolution of singularities algorithm is developed. This method is elementary in its statement and proof, using explicit coordinate systems as much as possible. Each coordinate change used in the resolution procedure is one-to-one on its domain, and is of one of a few explicit canonical forms. As applications of these methods to classical analysis, two theorems are proven. First and foremost, a general theorem regarding the existence of critical integrability exponents is established. Secondly, a new proof of a well-known inequality of Lojasiewicz is given.

Resolution of Singularities of Vector Fields in Dimension Three

Let X be an analytic vector field defined in a real analytic manifold of dimension three. We prove that all the singularities of X can be made elementary by a finite number of blowing-ups in the ambient space. Applications of an elementary resolution of singularities algorithm to exponential sums and congruences modulo p^n

We use the resolution of singularities algorithm of [G4] to provide new estimates for exponential sums as well as new bounds on how often a function f(x) such as a polynomial with integer coefficients is divisible by various powers of a prime p when x is an integer. They are proved using p-adic analogues of the theorems of [G3] on R^n sublevel set volumes and oscillatory integrals with real phase function. A constructive elementary method for local resolution of singularities

In this paper we simplify and otherwise improve the local resolution of singularities algorithm of [G1]-[G3], providing a local resolution of singularities method that works for functions with convergent power series over an arbitrary local field of characteristic zero.
