A near-infrared (NIR; 2.5 - 4.5 micron) spectroscopic survey of SDSS(Sloan Digital Sky Survey)-selected blue early-type galaxies (BEGs) has been conducted using the AKARI. The NIR spectra of 36 BEGs are secured, which are well balanced in their star-formation(SF)/Seyfert/LINER type composition. For high signal-to-noise ratio, we stack the BEG spectra all and in bins of several properties: color, specific star formation rate and optically-determined spectral type. We estimate the NIR continuum slope and the equivalent width of 3.29 micron PAH emission. In the comparison between the estimated NIR spectral features of the BEGs and those of model galaxies, the BEGs seem to be old-SSP(Simple Stellar Population)-dominated metal-rich galaxies with moderate dust attenuation. The dust attenuation in the BEGs may originate from recent star formation or AGN activity and the BEGs have a clear feature of PAH emission, the evidence of current SF. BEGs show NIR features different from those of ULIRGs, from which we do not find any clear relationship between BEGs and ULIRGs. We find that Seyfert BEGs have more active SF than LINER BEGs, in spite of the fact that Seyferts show stronger AGN activity than LINERs. One possible scenario satisfying both our results and the AGN feedback is that SF, Seyfert and LINER BEGs form an evolutionary sequence: SF - Seyfert - LINER.
The nearby universe remains the best laboratory to understand physical properties of galaxies and is a reference for any comparison with high redshift observations. The all sky (or very large) surveys performed from the ultraviolet (UV) to the far-infrared (far-IR) gives us large datasets with a very large wavelength coverage to perform a reference study. We want to investigate dust attenuation characteristics as well as star formation rate (SFR) calibrations on a sample of nearby galaxies observed over 13 bands from 0.15 to 160 microns. A sample of 363 galaxies is built from the AKARI /FIS al…
By cross-correlating AKARI infrared (IR) sources with the SDSS galaxies, we identified 2357 infrared galaxies with a spectroscopic redshift. This is not just one of the largest samples of local IR galaxies, but AKARI provides crucial FIR bands (9, 18, 65, 90, 140, and 160um) in accurately measuring galaxy SED across the peak of the dust emission at ~100um. By fitting modern IR SED models to the AKARI photometry, we measured the total infrared luminosity (L_IR) of individual galaxies more accurately. Using this L_IR, we constructed luminosity functions of infrared galaxies at a median redshift …
We present the 9 and 18 micron luminosity functions (LFs) of galaxies at 0.006 < z < 0.8 (with an average redshift of ~ 0.04) using the AKARI mid-infrared all-sky survey catalog. We selected 243 galaxies at 9 micron and 255 galaxies at 18 micron from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopy region. These galaxies were then classified by their optical emission lines, such as the line width of H_alpha or by their emission line ratios of [OIII]/H_beta and [NII]/H_alpha into five types: Type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGN) (Type 1); Type 2 AGN (Type 2); low-ionization narrow emission line g…
AKARI/Infrared Camera (IRC) Point Source Catalog provides a large amount of flux data at {\it S9W} ($9\ {\rm μm}$) and {\it L18W} ($18\ {\rm μm}$) bands. With the goal of constructing Star-Formation Rate(SFR) calculations using IRC data, we analyzed an IR selected GALEX-SDSS-2MASS-AKARI(IRC/Far-Infrared Surveyor) sample of 153 nearby galaxies. The far-infrared fluxes were obtained from AKARI diffuse maps to correct the underestimation for extended sources raised by the point-spread function photometry. SFRs of these galaxies were derived by the spectral energy distribution fitting program CIGA…
We present the mid-infrared (MIR) properties of galaxies within a supercluster in the North Ecliptic Pole region at z?0.087 observed with the AKARI satellite. We use data from the AKARI NEP-Wide (5.4 deg2) IR survey and the CLusters of galaxies EVoLution studies (CLEVL) mission program. We show that near-IR (3 μm)-mid- IR (11 μm) color can be used as an indicator of the specific star formation rate and the presence of intermediate age stellar populations. From the MIR observations, we find that red-sequence galaxies consist not only of passively evolving red early-type galaxies, but also of 1)…
We report a search for fluctuations of the sky brightness toward the north ecliptic pole (NEP) with the Japanese infrared astronomical satellite AKARI,at 2.4, 3.2, and 4.1 \mum. We obtained circular maps with 100 diameter field of view which clearly show a spatial structure on scale of a few hundred arcsec. A power spectrum analysis shows that there is a significant excess fluctuation at angular scales larger than 10000 that can't be explained by zodiacal light, diffuse Galactic light, shot noise of faint galaxies or clustering of low redshift galaxies. These results are consistent with observ…
The AKARI All-Sky Survey provided the first bright point source catalog detected at 90um. Starting from this catalog, we selected galaxies by matching AKARI sources with those in the IRAS PSCz. Next, we have measured total GALEX FUV and NUV flux densities. Then, we have matched this sample with SDSS and 2MASS galaxies. By this procedure, we obtained the final sample which consists of 607 galaxies. If we sort the sample with respect to 90um, their average SED shows a coherent trend: the more luminous at 90um, the redder the global SED becomes. The M_r--NUV-r color-magnitude relation of our samp…
We measure the transverse baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) signal in the local Universe using a sample of blue galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) survey as a cosmological tracer. The method is weakly dependent on a cosmological model and is suitable for 2D analyses in thin redshift bins to investigate the SDSS data in the interval $z {\in} [0.105, 0.115]$. We detect the transverse BAO signal $θ_{BAO} = 19.8^° {\pm} 1.05^°$ at $z_{eff} = 0.11$, with a statistical significance of $2.2 σ$. Additionally, we perform tests that confirm the robustness of this angular BAO signature. S…
We analyze the optical spectrum of type 1 QSO SDSS J1425+3231. This ob- ject is interesting since its narrow emission lines such as [O III]λλ4959, 5007 are double- peaked, and the line structure can be modeled well by three Gaussian components: two components for the two peaks (we refer the peaks at low/high redshift as "the blue/red component") and another one for the line wing which has the same line center as that of the blue component, but ~ 3 times broader. The separation between the blue and red components is ~ 500 km/s with blue component ~ 2 times broader than the red one. The Hβ emiss…
We examine spectral properties of the SDSS quasar J093201.60+031858.7, in particular the presence of strong blue peaks in the Balmer emission lines offset from the narrow lines by approximately 4200 km/s. Asymmetry in the broad central component of the Hbeta line indicates the presence of a double-peaked emitter. However, the strength and sharpness of the blue Hbeta and blue Hgamma peaks make this quasar spectrum unique amongst double-peaked emitters identified from SDSS spectra. We fit a disk model to the Hbeta line and compare this object with other unusual double-peaked quasar spectra, part…
We present the {\it AKARI} InfraRed Camera (IRC) imaging observation of early-type galaxies in A2218 at z $\simeq$ 0.175. Mid-infrared (MIR) emission from early-type galaxies traces circumstellar dust emission from AGB stars or/and residual star formation. Including the unique imaging capability at 11 and 15 $μ$m, our {\it AKARI} data provide an effective way to investigate MIR properties of early-type galaxies in the cluster environment. Among our flux-limited sample of 22 red sequence early-type galaxies with precise dynamical and line strength measurements ($<$ 18 mag at 3 $μm$), we find th…
We probe the angular scale of homogeneity in the local Universe using blue galaxies from the SDSS survey as a cosmological tracer. Through the scaled counts in spherical caps, $ \mathcal{N}(<θ) $, and the fractal correlation dimension, $\mathcal{D}_{2}(θ)$, we find an angular scale of transition to homogeneity for this sample of $θ_{\text{H}} = 22.19^{\circ} \pm 1.02^{\circ}$. A comparison of this measurement with another obtained using a different cosmic tracer at a similar redshift range ($z < 0.06$), namely, the HI extragalactic sources from the ALFALFA catalogue, confirms that both results…
We report spatial fluctuation analysis of the sky brightness in near-infrared from observations toward the north ecliptic pole (NEP) by the AKARI at 2.4 and 3.2 micron. As a follow up study of our previous work on the Monitor field of AKARI, we used NEP deep survey data, which covered a circular area of about 0.4 square degrees, in order to extend fluctuation analysis at angular scales up to 1000". We found residual fluctuation over the estimated shot noise at larger angles than the angular scale of the Monitor field. The excess fluctuation of the NEP deep field smoothly connects with that of …
We study the properties of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) drawn from a catalogue of more than 69000 clusters in the SDSS DR6 based on the adaptive matched filter technique (AMF, Szabo et al., 2010). Our sample consists of more than 14300 galaxies in the redshift range 0.1-0.3. We test the catalog by showing that it includes well-known BCGs which lie in the SDSS footprint. We characterize the BCGs in terms of r-band luminosities and optical colours as well as their trends with redshift. In particular, we define and study the fraction of blue BCGs, namely those that are likely to be missed by…
Correlations between the intrinsic shapes of galaxy pairs, and between the intrinsic shapes of galaxies and the large-scale density field, may be induced by tidal fields. These correlations, which have been detected at low redshifts (z<0.35) for bright red galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and for which upper limits exist for blue galaxies at z~0.1, provide a window into galaxy formation and evolution, and are also an important contaminant for current and future weak lensing surveys. Measurements of these alignments at intermediate redshifts (z~0.6) that are more relevant for co…
We have analyzed the spatially integrated kinematic properties of the ionized gas within the inner r<few kpc in 13 optically selected SDSS type 2 quasars at z~0.3-0.6, using the [OIII]4959,5007 lines. The line profiles show a significant asymmetry in 11 objects. There is a clear preference for blue asymmetries, which are found in 9/13 quasars at 10% intensity level. In coherence with studies on other types of active and non active galaxies, we propose that the asymmetries are produced by outflows where differential dust extinction is at work. This scenario is favoured by other results we find:…
We present measurements of reddening due to dust using the colors of stars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We measure the color of main sequence turn-off stars by finding the "blue tip" of the stellar locus: the prominent blue edge in the distribution of stellar colors. The method is sensitive to color changes of order 18, 12, 7, and 8 mmag of reddening in the colors u-g, g-r, r-i, and i-z, respectively, in regions measuring 90' by 14'. We present maps of the blue tip colors in each of these bands over the entire SDSS footprint, including the new dusty southern Galactic cap data provid…
We present a multi-wavelength study of the nature of the SDSS galaxies divided into fine classes based on their morphology, colour and spectral features. The SDSS galaxies are classified into early-type and late-type; red and blue; passive, HII, Seyfert and LINER, which returns a total of 16 fine classes of galaxies. The properties of galaxies in each fine class are investigated from radio to X-ray, using 2MASS, IRAS, FIRST, NVSS, GALEX and ROSAT data. The UV - optical - NIR colours of blue early-type galaxies (BEGs) seem to result from the combination of old stellar population and recent star…
We study the clustering of galaxies, as a function of their colour, from Data Release Ten (DR10) of the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey. We select 122,967 galaxies with 0.43 < z < 0.7 into a "Blue" sample and 131,969 into a "Red" sample based on k+e corrected (to z=0.55) r-i colours and i band magnitudes. The samples are chosen to each contain more than 100,000 galaxies, have similar redshift distributions, and maximize the difference in clustering amplitude. The Red sample has a 40% larger bias than the Blue (b_Red/b_Blue = 1.39+-0.04), implying the Red galaxies occupy dark m…
We use the kinematics of satellite galaxies that orbit around the central galaxy in a dark matter halo to infer the scaling relations between halo mass and central galaxy properties. Using galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we investigate the halo mass-luminosity relation (MLR) and the halo mass-stellar mass relation (MSR) of central galaxies. In particular, we focus on the dependence of these scaling relations on the colour of the central galaxy. We find that red central galaxies on average occupy more massive haloes than blue central galaxies of the same luminosity. However, at fixe…
We present the optical data for 195 HI-selected galaxies that fall within both the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Parkes Equatorial Survey (ES). The photometric quantities have been independently recomputed for our sample using a new photometric pipeline optimized for large galaxies, thus correcting for SDSS's limited reliability for automatic photometry of angularly large or low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies. We outline the magnitude of the uncertainty in the SDSS catalog-level photometry and derive a quantitative method for correcting the over-sky subtraction in the SDSS photome…
We investigated the typical environment and physical properties of "red discs" and "blue bulges", comparing those to the "normal" objects in the blue cloud and red sequence. Our sample is composed of cluster members and field galaxies at $z \le 0.1$, so that we can assess the impact of the local and global environment. We find that disc galaxies display a strong dependence on environment, becoming redder for higher densities. This effect is more pronounced for objects within the virial radius, being also strong related to the stellar mass. We find that local and global environment affect galax…
I present the discovery of Balmer-line absorption from H alpha to H9 in iron low-ionizaton broad absorption line (FeLoBAL) quasar, SDSS~J172341.10+555340.5 by near-infrared spectroscopy with the Cooled Infrared Spectrograph and Camera for OHS (CISCO) attached to the Subaru telescope. The redshift of the Balmer-line absorption troughs is 2.0530 +/- 0.0003, and it is blueshifted by 5370 km s^{-1} from the Balmer emission lines. It is more than $4000$ km s^{-1} blueshifted from the previously known UV absorption lines. I detect relatively strong (EW_rest=20A) [O III] emission lines which are simi…
We use the combined photometric SDSS + GALEX database to look for populations of luminous blue star-forming galaxies. These were initially identified from such a sample at redshifts near 0.4, using SDSS spectra. We make use of the colour index previously defined to separate stars and QSOs, to locate more of these unusual galaxies, to fainter limits. They are found in significant numbers in two different regions of the related colour-magnitude plot. Within these regions, we use the ensemble 7-colour photometry to estimate the populations of blue star-forming galaxies at redshift near 0.4, and a…
The haunt of high redshift BL Lacerate objects is day by day more compelling, to firmly understand their intrinsic nature and evolution. SDSS J004054.65-0915268 is, at the moment, one of the most distant BL Lac candidate at z \sim 5 (Plotkin et al 2010). We present a new optical-near IR spectrum obtained with ALFOSC-NOT with a new, custom designed dispersive grating aimed to detect broad emission lines that could disprove this classification. In the obtained spectra we do not detect any emission features and we provide an upper limit to the luminosity of the C IV broad emission line. Therefore…
We have investigated the radial g-r color gradients of early-type galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR6 in the redshift range 0.00<z<0.06. The majority of massive early-type galaxies show a negative color gradient (red-cored) as generally expected for early-type galaxies. On the other hand, roughly 30 per cent of the galaxies in this sample show a positive color gradient (blue-cored). These "blue-cored" galaxies often show strong H beta absorption line strengths and/or emission line ratios that are indicative of the presence of young stellar populations. Combining the optical dat…

We identify new strong lensing clusters of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS DR8) by visually inspecting color images of a large sample of clusters of galaxies. We find 68 new clusters showing giant arcs in addition to 30 known lensing systems. Among 68 cases, 13 clusters are "almost certain" lensing systems with tangential giant arcs, 22 clusters are "probable" and 31 clusters are "possible" lensing systems. We also find two exotic systems with blue rings. The giant arcs have angular separations of 2.0"-25.7" from the bright central galaxies. We note that the rich clusters …
[Abridged] We study the spectral properties of intermediate mass galaxies as a function of colour and morphology. We use Galaxy Zoo to define three morphological classes of galaxies, namely early-types (ellipticals), late-type (disk-dominated) face-on spirals and early-type (bulge-dominated) face-on spirals. We classify these galaxies as blue or red according to their SDSS g-r colour and use the spectral fitting code VESPA to calculate time-resolved star-formation histories, metallicity and total starlight dust extinction from their SDSS fibre spectra. We find that red late-type spirals show l…
We present color-magnitude and morphological analysis of 54 low-redshift ULIRGs, a subset of the IRAS 1Jy sample (Kim & Sanders, 1998), in the SDSS. The ULIRGs are on average 1 magnitude brighter in M0.1r than the SDSS galaxies within the same redshift range. The majority of the ULIRGs (~87%) have the colors typical of the blue cloud, and only 4 sources (~7%) are located in the red sequence. While ULIRGs are popularly thought to be precursors to a QSO phase, we find few (~6%) in the "green valley" where the majority of the X-ray and IR selected AGNs are found, and none of which harbors an AGN.…
We use the SDSS/DR8 galaxy sample to study the radial distribution of satellite galaxies around isolated primaries, comparing to semi-analytic models of galaxy formation based on the Millennium and Millennium-II simulations. SDSS satellites behave differently around high- and low-mass primaries: those orbiting objects with $M_*>10^{11}M_\odot$ are mostly red and are less concentrated towards their host than the inferred dark matter halo, an effect that is very pronounced for the few blue satellites. On the other hand, less massive primaries have steeper satellite profiles that agree quite well…
We make use of the images from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82 to present an analysis of r band surface brightness profiles and radial color gradients (g - r, u - r) in 111 nearby early-type galaxies (ETGs). With Stripe 82 images, we are able to pay special attentions to the low-surface-brightness areas (LSB areas) of the galaxies. The LSB areas make a difference to the Sersic fittings and concentration indices, making both the indices less than the typical values for ETGs. There are about 60% negative color gradients (red-core) within 1.5Re , much more than the approximately 10% positi…
I introduce a simple empirical measure of average galaxy cluster sizes based on a comparison of the correlation lengths of red galaxies with blue that can provide a more accurate and bias-free measure of the average size and number density of galaxy clusters. Using 269,000 galaxies from the SDSS DR6 survey, I show that this 3D correlation length, averaged over many clusters, remains very nearly constant at L0= 4.797 +/- 0.024 Mpc/h from small redshifts out to redshifts of 0.5. This serves as a new measure of cosmic length scales and provides a means of testing the standard cosmological model t…
We here report an identification of SDSSJ141324+530527.0 (SBS1411+533) at $z=0.456344$ as a new "changing-look" quasar with a "turn-on" spectral type transition from Type-1.9/2 to Type-1 within a rest frame time scale of 1-10 yr by a comparison of our new spectroscopic observation and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) archive data base. The SDSS DR7 spectrum taken in 2003 is dominated by a starlight emission from host galaxies redward of the Balmer limit, and has non-detectable broad H$β$ line. The new spectrum taken by us on June 1st, 2017 and SDSS DR14 spectrum taken on May 29, 2017 indica…
The alignment between satellites and central galaxies has been studied in detail both in observational and theoretical works. The widely accepted fact is that the satellites preferentially reside along the major axis of their central galaxy. However, the origin and large-scale environment dependence of this alignment are still unknown. In an attempt to figure out those, we use data constructed from SDSS DR7 to investigate the large-scale environmental dependence of this alignment with emphasis on examining the alignments' dependence on the colour of the central galaxy. We find a very strong la…
We measure the color and stellar mass dependence of clustering in spectroscopic galaxies at $0.6 < z < 0.65$ using data from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey component of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We greatly increase the statistical precision of our clustering measurements by using the cross-correlation of 66,657 spectroscopic galaxies to a sample of 6.6 million fainter photometric galaxies. The clustering amplitude $w(R)$ is measured as the ratio of the mean excess number of photometric galaxies found within a specified radius annulus around a spectroscopic galaxy to that from …
We present a study on the environments of the SDSS galaxies divided into fine classes based on their morphology, colour and spectral features. The SDSS galaxies are classified into early-type and late-type; red and blue; passive, HII, Seyfert and LINER, which returns a total of 16 fine classes of galaxies. We estimate the local number density, target-excluded local luminosity density, local colour, close pair fraction and the luminosity and colour of the brightest neighbour, which are compared between the fine classes comprehensively. The morphology-colour class of galaxies strongly depends on…
We measure the luminosity and color dependence of galaxy clustering in the SDSS DR7 main galaxy sample, focusing on the projected correlation function w_p(r_p) of volume-limited samples. We interpret our measurements using halo occupation distribution (HOD) modeling assuming a Lambda-CDM cosmology. The amplitude of w_p(r_p) grows slowly with luminosity for L < L_* and increases sharply at higher luminosities, with bias factor b(>L)=1.06+0.23(L/L_*)^{1.12}. At fixed luminosity, redder galaxies have a stronger and steeper w_p(r_p), a trend that runs steadily from the bluest galaxies to the redde…
With the aim of investigating galaxies with two strong simultaneous starbursts, we have extracted a sample of galaxies with double-peaked emission lines in their global spectra from the SDSS spectral database. We then fitted the emission lines Halpha, Hbeta, [OIII]5007, [NII]6584, [SII]6717 and [SII]6731 of 129 spectra by two Gaussians to separate the radiation of the two (blue and red) components. A more or less reliable decomposition of the all those emission lines have been found for 55 spectra. Using a standard BPT classification diagram, we have been able to divide the galaxies from our s…

We analyze a set of volume limited samples from the SDSS to study the dependence of galaxy colour on different environments of the cosmic web. We measure the local dimension of galaxies to determine the geometry of their embedding environments and find that filaments host a higher fraction of red galaxies than sheets at each luminosity. We repeat the analysis at a fixed density and recover the same trend which shows that galaxy colours depend on geometry of environments besides local density. At a fixed luminosity, the fraction of red galaxies in filaments and sheets increases with the extent …
We present the mean spectral energy distribution (SED) of a sample of optically selected quasars (QSOs) at redshifts of $1 \le z \le 5$. To derive it, we exploit photometric information from SDSS, UKIDSS, and WISE surveys in combination with a stacking analysis of \textit{Herschel}, \textit{AKARI}, and \textit{Planck} maps at the location of the QSOs. The near-UV and optical parts of the reconstructed mean rest-frame SED are similar to those found in other studies. However, the SED shows an excess at 1-2 $μ$m (when compared to the aforementioned SEDs normalized in the near-UV) and a prominent …
We discuss 76 large amplitude transients (Delta-m>1.5) occurring in the nuclei of galaxies, nearly all with no previously known Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). They have been discovered as part of the Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) 3pi survey, by comparison with SDSS photometry a decade earlier, and then monitored with the Liverpool Telescope, and studied spectroscopically with the William Herschel Telescope (WHT). Based on colours, light curve shape, and spectra, these transients fall into four groups. A few are misclassified stars or objects of unknown type. Some are red/fast transients and are known or l…
We use the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to investigate the properties of massive elliptical galaxies in the local Universe (z\leq0.08) that have unusually blue optical colors. Through careful inspection, we distinguish elliptical from non-elliptical morphologies among a large sample of similarly blue galaxies with high central light concentrations (c_r\geq2.6). These blue ellipticals comprise 3.7 per cent of all c_r\geq2.6 galaxies with stellar masses between 10^10 and 10^11 h^{-2} {\rm M}_{\sun}. Using published fiber spectra diagnostics, we identify a unique subset of 172 non-star-forming ellipt…
Polar-ring galaxies are multi-spin systems, showing star formation in a blue late-type component, perpendicular to a red early-type one, revealing how galaxy formation can sometimes occur in successive steps. We perform two-dimensional decomposition in the $g$, $r$, $i$ bandpasses of 50 polar-ring galaxies (PRGs) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Each object was fit with a Sérsic host galaxy and a Sérsic ring. Our general results are: (i) The central (host) galaxies of the PRGs are non-dwarf sub-$L^{\ast}$ galaxies with colors typical for early-type galaxies. (ii) Polar structures in our samp…
We have analyzed multi-band light curves of 328 intermediate redshift (0.05 <= z < 0.24) type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) observed by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-II Supernova Survey (SDSS-II SN Survey). The multi-band light curves were parameterized by using the Multi-band Stretch Method, which can simply parameterize light curve shapes and peak brightness without dust extinction models. We found that most of the SNe Ia which appeared in red host galaxies (u - r > 2.5) don't have a broad light curve width and the SNe Ia which appeared in blue host galaxies (u - r < 2.0) have a variety of light cur…
We investigated the optical/ultraviolet (UV) color variations for a sample of 2169 quasars based on multi-epoch spectroscopy in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data release seven (DR7) and data release nine (DR9). To correct the systematic difference between DR7 and DR9 due to the different instrumental setup, we produced a correction spectrum by using a sample of F-stars observed both in DR7 and DR9. The correction spectrum was then applied to quasars when comparing the spectra of DR7 with DR9. In each object, the color variation was explored by comparing the spectral index of the continu…
Using the 'k-means' cluster analysis algorithm, we carry out an unsupervised classification of all galaxy spectra in the seventh and final Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release (SDSS/DR7). Except for the shift to restframe wavelengths, and the normalization to the g-band flux, no manipulation is applied to the original spectra. The algorithm guarantees that galaxies with similar spectra belong to the same class. We find that 99 % of the galaxies can be assigned to only 17 major classes, with 11 additional minor classes including the remaining 1%. The classification is not unique since many gal…
For the next generation of spectroscopic galaxy surveys, it is important to forecast their performances and to accurately interpret their large data sets. For this purpose, it is necessary to consistently simulate different populations of galaxies, in particular Emission Line Galaxies (ELGs), less used in the past for cosmological purposes. In this work, we further the forward modeling approach presented in Fagioli et al. 2018, by extending the spectra simulator Uspec to model galaxies of different kinds with improved parameters from Tortorelli et al. 2020. Furthermore, we improve the modeling…
We look at the contribution of different galaxy populations to the atomic hydrogen (HI) mass function (HIMF) and the HI density parameter, $Ω_{\text{HI}}$, in the local Universe. Our analysis is based on a sample of 7857 HI-selected galaxies selected from a volume common to the SDSS and ALFALFA surveys (40$\%$ catalog -- $α.40$). We define different populations of galaxies in the color(u-r)-magnitude($M_{\text{r}}$) plane and compute the HIMF for each of them. Additionally we compute the HIMF for dark galaxies; these are undetected in SDSS and represent $\sim 2\%$ of the total sample. We find …
Red and blue galaxies are traditionally classified using some specific cuts in colour or other galaxy properties, which are supported by empirical arguments. The vagueness associated with such cuts are likely to introduce a significant contamination in these samples. Fuzzy sets are vague boundary sets which can efficiently capture the classification uncertainty in the absence of any precise boundary. We propose a method for classification of galaxies according to their colours using fuzzy set theory. We use data from the SDSS to construct a fuzzy set for red galaxies with its members having di…
