DEPFET active pixel sensors are a well-developed technology for vertex detectors at future colliders. Extensive test beam campaigns have proven the excellent performance of these devices, and their radiation hardness has been thoroughly tested. For the Belle-II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider, a new vertex detector based on DEPFET technology is being developed, using sensors thinned down to 75 μm. We give an overview over recent results with test devices using ILC pixel geometries as well as the concepts and challenges for the Belle-II pixel vertex tracker and discuss how the R&D for the ILC VXD can take advantage of these developments.
We have developed a prototype system for the ILC vertex detector based on DEPFET pixels. The system operates a 128x64 matrix (with ~35x25 square micron large pixels) and uses two dedicated microchips, the SWITCHER II chip for matrix steering and the CURO II chip for readout. The system development has been driven by the final ILC requirements which above all demand a detector thinned to 50 micron and a row wise read out with line rates of 20MHz and more. The targeted noise performance for the DEPFET technology is in the range of ENC=100 e-. The functionality of the system has been demonstrated…
DEPleted Field Effect Transistor (DEPFET) active pixel detectors combine a first amplification stage with a fully depleted sensor in one single device, resulting in a very good signal-to-noise ratio even for thin sensors. DEPFET pixels are produced in MOS technology with two metal and two poly-silicon layers and have been developed for the use in Xray imaging and tracking in particle physics experiments. The sensor concept will be presented and all aspects of operation will be detailed with the focus on its application at the upgraded detector Belle II under preparation for the high-luminosity…
Currently the heavy flavour factory KEKB located at the KEK accelerator centre in Tsukuba, Japan, is being upgraded to the Super KEKB factory, aiming for a substantially higher luminosity of 8x10^35 cm^-2 s^-1. This by a factor of 40 increased luminosity requires significant modifications of the Belle detector. The vertex detector needs to be redesigned and, besides a four-layer silicon strip detector, a pixel detector based on the DEPFET technology will be installed closest to the interaction point. The requirements for this pixel detector, the DEPFET technology and the current status of the …
The DEPFET collaboration develops highly granular, ultra-transparent active pixel detectors for high-performance vertex reconstruction at future collider experiments. The characterization of detector prototypes has proven that the key principle, the integration of a first amplification stage in a detector-grade sensor material, can provide a comfortable signal to noise ratio of over 40 for a sensor thickness of 50-75 $\mathrm{\mathbf{μm}}$. ASICs have been designed and produced to operate a DEPFET pixel detector with the required read-out speed. A complete detector concept is being developed, …
The European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL.EU) will provide every 0.1 s a train of 2700 spatially coherent ultrashort X-ray pulses at 4.5 MHz repetition rate. The Small Quantum Systems (SQS) instrument and the Spectroscopy and Coherent Scattering instrument (SCS) operate with soft X-rays between 0.5 keV - 6keV. The DEPFET Sensor with Signal Compression (DSSC) detector is being developed to meet the requirements set by these two XFEL.EU instruments. The DSSC imager is a 1 mega-pixel camera able to store up to 800 single-pulse images per train. The so-called ladder is the basic unit of the DSS…

In this paper the status and prospects for BESIII is presented. The BEPCII machine is in good status and recently reached its highest luminosity of 7.08*10^32cm^-2s^-1. The BESIII detectors have been running stably since 2009. Upgrade plans for its sub-detectors have been proposed and the upgrade is undergoing. The major upgrade comes from the drift chamber and the time of of flight counter. The other sub-detectors show good status and no upgrade are needed. Given the current status and upgrade plan of the BESIII detectors, it's foreseen that the BESIII is able to work for 8 to 10 years from no…
Pixel Detectors, as the current technology of choice for the innermost vertex detection, have reached a stage at which large detectors have been built for the LHC experiments and a new era of developments, both for hybrid and for monolithic or semi-monolithic pixel detectors is in full swing. This is largely driven by the requirements of the upgrade programme for the superLHC and by other collider experiments which plan to use monolithic pixel detectors for the first time. A review on current pixel detector developments for particle tracking and vertexing is given, comprising hybrid pixel dete…

LHCb is an experiment dedicated to study CP violation and other rare phenomena in B mesons decays with very high precision. It is one of the four experiments that will operate at the 14Tev proton-proton Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in 2008. Here we briefly describe the current status of the experiment, as well as plans towards a future upgrade.
Fine pixel CCD (FPCCD) is an option for the sensor used for the ILC vertex detector to reduce the pixel occupancy due to the high background rate near the interaction point. In this paper, we report on the R&D status of FPCCD sensors and the R&D plan for the sensors and the cooling system.
An upgraded asymmetric e+e- flavor factory, SuperKEKB, is planned at KEK. It will deliver a luminosity of 8 x 10^35 cm^-2 s^-1, allowing precision measurements in the flavor sector which can probe new physics well beyond the scales accessible to direct observation. The increased luminosity also requires upgrades of the Belle detector. Of critical importance here is a new silicon pixel vertex tracker, which will significantly improve the decay vertex resolution. This new detector will consist of two detector layers close to the interaction point, using DEPFET pixel sensors with 50 um thick sili…
Other the past few years we have developed a monolithic CMOS pixel detector design for the ILC in collaboration with the SARNOFF Corporation. The unique feature of this design is the recorded time tag for each hit, allowing assignment of the hit to a particular bunch crossing (thus the name Chronopixel). The prototype design was completed in 2007. The first set of prototype devices was fabricated in 2008. We have developed a detailed testing plan and have designed the test electronics in collaboration with SLAC. Testing is expected to start early in 2009.
The CMS Collaboration is preparing to build replacement endcap calorimeters for the HL-LHC era. The new high-granularity calorimeter (HGCAL) is, as the name implies, a highly-granular sampling calorimeter with approximately six million silicon sensor channels (approx. 1.1cm2 or 0.5cm2 cells) and about 250 thousand channels of scintillator tiles readout with on-tile silicon photomultipliers. The calorimeter is designed to operate in the harsh radiation environment at the HL-LHC, where the average number of interactions per bunch crossing is expected to exceed 140. Besides measuring energy and p…

Hybrid pixel detectors have been invented for the LHC to make tracking and vertexing possible at all in LHC's radiation intense environment. The LHC pixel detectors have meanwhile very successfully fulfilled their promises and R\&D for the planned HL-LHC upgrade is in full swing, targeting even higher ionising doses and non-ionising fluences. In terms of rate and radiation tolerance hybrid pixels are unrivaled. But they have disadvantages as well, most notably material thickness, production complexity, and cost. Meanwhile also active pixel sensors (DEPFET, MAPS) have become real pixel detector…

sPHENIX is a new experiment that is being constructed at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The primary physics goals of sPHENIX are to measure jets, their substructure, and the upsilon resonances in $p$$+$$p$, $p$+Au and Au+Au collisions. To realize these goals, a tracking system composed of a time projection chamber and several silicon detectors will be used to identify tracks that correspond to jets and upsilon decays. However, the sPHENIX experiment will collect approximately 200 PB of data utilizing a finite-sized computing center; thus, performing trac…

We describe the design of the dark matter experiment Haloscope At Yale Sensitive To Axion Cold Dark Matter (HAYSTAC), and report the results of a haloscope search for dark matter axions. We exclude axion models with axion-photon couplings $g_{aγγ} \underset{\sim}{>}2\times10^{-14}$ GeV$^{-1}$ over the range $23.55<m_{a}<24.0$ $μ$eV. This sensitivity is a factor of 2.7 above KSVZ model coupling, averaged over the given mass range. Phase I achieved a noise temperature a factor of 2 over the standard quantum limit. Phase II, now entering commissioning, incorporates a squeezed-vacuum state receive…
A new, modular toolkit for creating simulations of 2D X-ray pixel detectors, X-CSIT (X-ray Camera SImulation Toolkit), is being developed. The toolkit uses three sequential simulations of detector processes which model photon interactions, electron charge cloud spreading with a high charge density plasma model and common electronic components used in detector readout. In addition, because of the wide variety in pixel detector design, X-CSIT has been designed as a modular platform so that existing functions can be modified or additional functionality added if the specific design of a detector d…
SIMPLE (Superheated Instrument for Massive ParticLE searches) employs superheated droplet detectors (SDDs) to search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) dark matter. As a result of the intrinsic SDD insensitivity to minimum ionizing particles and high fluorine content of target liquids, competitive WIMP limits were already obtained at the early prototype stage. We comment here on the expected immediate increase in sensitivity of the program and on future plans to exploit this promising technnique.
