We demonstrate that topological defects in a rational conformal field theory can be described by a classifying algebra for defects - a finite-dimensional semisimple unital commutative associative algebra whose irreducible representations give the defect transmission coefficients. We show in particular that the structure constants of the classifying algebra are traces of operators on spaces of conformal blocks and that the defect transmission coefficients determine the defect partition functions.

Classifying Superconformal Defects in Diverse Dimensions Part I: Superconformal Lines

We initiate the classification of unitary superconformal defects in unitary superconformal field theories (SCFT) of diverse spacetime dimensions $3\leq d \leq 6$. Fermionic CFTs and classifying algebras

We study fermionic conformal field theories on surfaces with spin structure in the presence of boundaries, defects, and interfaces. We obtain the relevant crossing relations, taking particular care with parity signs and signs arising from the change of spin structure in different limits. The three-dimensional origin of the classifying algebra

It is known that reflection coefficients for bulk fields of a rational conformal field theory in the presence of an elementary boundary condition can be obtained as representation matrices of irreducible representations of the classifying algebra, a semisimple commutative associative complex algebra. A classifying algebra for boundary conditions

We introduce a finite-dimensional algebra that controls the possible boundary conditions of a conformal field theory. For theories that are obtained by modding out a Z_2 symmetry (corresponding to a so-called D_odd-type, or half-integer spin simple current, modular invariant), this classifying algebra contains the fusion algebra of the untwisted sector as a subalgebra. Proper treatment of fields in the twisted sector, so-called fixed points, leads to structures that are intriguingly close to the ones implied by modular invariance for conformal field theories on closed orientable surfaces.

Classifying relaxed highest-weight modules for admissible-level Bershadsky-Polyakov algebras

Chiral Algebras, Localization and Surface Defects

Four-dimensional N = 2 superconformal quantum field theories contain a subsector carrying the structure of a chiral algebra. Using localization techniques, we show for the free hypermultiplet that this structure can be accessed directly from the path integral on the four-sphere. We extend the localization computation to include supersymmetric surface defects described by a generic 4d/2d coupled system. The presence of a defect corresponds to considering a module of the chiral algebra: our results provide a calculational window into its structure constants.

On W-algebras and the symmetries of defects of 6d N=(2,0) theory

We consider 6d N=(2,0) theory on N M5-branes, together with a 4d defect labeled by a Young diagram Y specifying its global symmetry G_Y. A recent conjecture states that a compactification of this system leads to a 2d theory with W-algebra symmetry depending on Y. We provide a check of the conjecture by reproducing the level of the current subalgebra \hat{G}_Y of this W-algebra from the property of the 4d defect.

We investigate superconformal surface defects in four-dimensional N=2 superconformal theories. Each such defect gives rise to a module of the associated chiral algebra and the surface defect Schur index is the character of this module. On Quiver W-algebras and Defects from Gauge Origami

In this note, using Nekrasov's gauge origami framework, we study two different versions of the the BPS/CFT correspondence - first, the standard AGT duality and, second, the quiver W algebra construction which has been developed recently by Kimura and Pestun.
