We show that the homotopy colimit construction for diagrams of categories with an operad action, recently introduced by Fiedorowicz, Stelzer and Vogt, has the desired homotopy type for diagrams of weak braided monoidal categories. This provides a more flexible way to realize E-2 spaces categorically.
We show that Schmitt's hereditary species induce monoidal decomposition spaces, and exhibit Schmitt's bialgebra construction as an instance of the general bialgebra construction on a monoidal decomposition space. We introduce a bialgebra axiom for a pair $(c,\ell)$ of a colax-monoidal and a lax-monoidal structures on a functor $F\colon \mathscr{M}_1\to \mathscr{M}_2$ between two (strict) symmetric monoidal categories. This axiom can be regarded as a weakening of the property of $F$ to be a strict symmetric monoidal functor. A PROB is a "product and braid" category. Such categories can be used to encode the structure borne by an object in a braided monoidal category. In this paper we provide PROBs whose categories of algebras in a braided monoidal category are equivalent to the categories of monoids and comonoids using the category associated to the braid crossed simplicial group of Fiedorowicz and Loday. We consider a framework for representing double loop spaces (and more generally E-2 spaces) as commutative monoids. There are analogous commutative rectifications of braided monoidal structures and we use this framework to define iterated double deloopings. We also consider commutative rectifications of E-infinity spaces and symmetric monoidal categories and we relate this to the category of symmetric spectra.

We develop a notion of iterated monoidal category and show that this notion corresponds in a precise way to the notion of iterated loop space. Specifically the group completion of the nerve of such a category is an iterated loop space and free iterated monoidal categories give rise to finite simplicial operads of the same homotopy type as the classical little cubes operads used to parametrize the higher H-space structure of iterated loop spaces. Iterated monoidal categories encompass, as a special case, the notion of braided tensor categories, as used in the theory of quantum groups.
We introduce the notion of directed hereditary species and show that they have associated monoidal decomposition spaces, comodule bialgebras, and operadic categories.
