A nonrelativistic effective theory to describe the electroproduction reaction of a single pion on the nucleon at leading order in the electromagnetic coupling is constructed. The framework is tailored to accurately describe the cusp generated by the pion and nucleon mass differences. The S- and P- wave multipole amplitudes at two loops for all four reaction channels are provided. As an application, a new low energy theorem is discussed.
We investigate wide-angle photo- and electroproduction of pions within the handbag mechanism in which the $γ^{(*)} N\to πN'$ amplitudes factorize into hard partonic subprocess amplitudes, $γ^{(*)} q\to πq'$, and form factors representing $1/x$-moments of generalized parton distributions (GPDs). The subprocess is calculated to twist-3 accuracy taking into account the 2- and 3-body Fock components of the pion. Both components are required for achieving gauge invariance in QED and QCD. The twist-2 and twist-3 distribution amplitudes (DAs) of the pion as well as the form factors are taken from our…
Based on the nonrelativistic QCD framework, we study the $Υ$ production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron-proton scattering (SIDIS) at HERA, EIC, and LHeC, with the main aim of assessing the viability of observing $Υ$ electroproduction at the three colliders. The color-octet (CO) contributions are found to have a crucial effect on both the integrated and differential cross sections, serving to further establish the significance of the CO mechanism. By setting the kinematic cuts to $p_{t,Υ}^{\star 2}>1~\textrm{GeV}^{2}$, $W>50$ GeV, $2<Q^2<100~\textrm{GeV}^2$, and $0.3<z<0.9$, only a fe…
We examine the efficacy of pion exchange models to simultaneously describe leading neutron electroproduction at HERA and the $\bar{d}-\bar{u}$ flavor asymmetry in the proton. A detailed $χ^2$ analysis of the ZEUS and H1 cross sections, when combined with constraints on the pion flux from Drell-Yan data, allows regions of applicability of one-pion exchange to be delineated. The analysis disfavors several models of the pion flux used in the literature, and yields an improved extraction of the pion structure function and its uncertainties at parton momentum fractions in the pion of $4 \times 10^{…
We study the single-spin asymmetries of pions produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering on the longitudinally polarized nucleon targets. We particularly consider the effects of the twist-3 transverse-momentum dependent distribution functions $f_L^\perp$ and $h_L$ to the asymmetry. We calculate the asymmetric moment $A_{UL}^{\sinϕ_h}$ for $π^+$, $π^-$ and $π^0$ produced off the proton target at HERMES and compare the results with the HERMES data. We also present the prediction of the same asymmetries for different pions at the kinematics of CLAS 5.5 GeV on a proton target, as well as…
The pion charge radius from charged pion electroproduction
We report on the first measurement of cross sections for exclusive deeply virtual pion electroproduction off the proton, $e p \to e^\prime n π^+$, above the resonance region at backward pion center-of-mass angles. The $φ^*_π$-dependent cross sections were measured, from which we extracted three combinations of structure functions of the proton. Our results are compatible with calculations based on nucleon-to-pion transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs) and shed new light on nucleon structure.
We explore quark-hadron duality in semi-inclusive pion electroproduction on proton and neutron targets. Using the spin-flavor symmetric quark model, we compute ratios of pi+ and pi- cross sections for both unpolarized and polarized scattering, and discuss realizations of duality in several symmetry breaking scenarios. The model calculations allow one to understand some of the key features of recent data on semi-inclusive pion production at low energies.
We analyze the electroproduction of pseudoscalar mesons within the handbag approach. To investigate these reactions, we consider the leading-twist contribution together with the transversity twist-3 effects that are crucial in the description of experimental data. Our results on the cross section are in agreement with experiment. We present our predictions for spin observables.
In this talk it is reported on an analysis of hard exclusive pion electroproduction within the handbag approach. Particular emphasis is laid on single-spin asymmetries. It is argued that a recent HERMES measurement of asymmetries measured with a transversely polarized target clearly indicate the occurrence of strong contributions from transversely polarized photons. Within the handbag approach such gamma_T --> pion transitions are described by the transversity GPDs accompanied by a twist-3 pion wave function. It is shown that this approach leads to results on cross sections and single-spin asy…
The pion and nucleon mass differences generate a very pronounced cusp in the photoproduction reaction of a single pion on the nucleon. A nonrelativistic effective field theory to describe this reaction is constructed. The approach is rigorous in the sense that it is an effective field theory with a consistent power counting scheme. Expressions for the S- and P-wave multipole amplitudes for all four reaction channels at two loops are given.
We derive expressions for pion electroproduction amplitudes in the 1/N_c expansion of QCD, and obtain from them linear relations between the electromagnetic multipole amplitudes that hold at all energies. The leading-order relations in 1/N_c compare favorably with available data (especially away from resonances), but the next-to-leading-order relations tend to provide only small or no improvement.
Nucleon to meson transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs), non-diagonal matrix elements of nonlocal three quark operators between a nucleon and a meson states, arise within the collinear factorized description of hard exclusive electroproduction of mesons off nucleons in the backward direction. Below we address the problem of modelling pion to nucleon TDAs. We suggest a factorized Ansatz for quadruple distributions with input from the soft pion theorem for pi N TDAs. In order to satisfy the polynomiality property in its full form the spectral representation is complemented with a D-term like …
We perform detailed calculations of two-photon-exchange QED corrections to the cross section of pion electroproduction. The results are obtained with and without the soft-photon approximation; analytic expressions for the radiative corrections are derived. The relative importance of the two-photon correction is analyzed for the kinematics of several experiments at Jefferson Lab. A significant, over 20%, effect due to two-photon exchange is predicted for the backward angles of electron scattering at large transferred momenta.
Baryon to meson transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs), non-diagonal matrix elements of the nonlocal three quark operator between a nucleon and a meson state, extend the concept of generalized parton distributions. These non-perturbative objects which encode the information on three quark correlations inside the nucleon may be accessed experimentally in backward meson electroproduction reactions. We suggest a general framework for modelling nucleon to pion (pi N) TDAs employing the spectral representation for pi N TDAs in terms of quadruple distributions. The factorized Ansatz for quadruple…
At large virtuality $Q^2$, the coupling to the vector meson production channels provides us with a natural explanation of the surprisingly large cross section of the neutral pion electroproduction recently measured at Jefferson Laboratory, without destroying the good agreement between the Regge pole model and the data at the real photon point. Elastic rescattering of the $π^0$ provides us with a way to explain why the node, that appears at $t\sim -0.5$ GeV$^2$ at the real photon point, disappears as soon as $Q^2$ differs from zero.
Pion and eta electroproduction data are jointly analyzed for the first time, up to a center-of-mass energy of 1.6 GeV. The framework is a dynamical coupled-channel model, based on the recent Jülich-Bonn-Washington analysis of pion electroproduction data for the same energy range. Comparisons are made to a number of single-channel eta electroproduction fits. By comparing multipoles of comparable fit quality, we find some of these amplitudes are well determined over the near-threshold region, while others will require fits over an extended energy range.
The wide-angle photo- and electroproduction of pions is investigated within the handbag mechanism in which the $γ^{(*)} N\to πN'$ amplitudes factorize into subprocess amplitudes,$γ^{(*)} q\to πq'$, and form factors representing $1/x$-moments of generalized parton distributions (GPDs). The subprocess is calculated to twist-3 accuracy taking into account both the 2- and 3-body Fock components of the pion. The cross-sections are compared to experiment and spin-effects are discussed.
We present a calculation of pion photo- and electroproduction in manifestly Lorentz-invariant baryon chiral perturbation theory up to and including order $q^4$. We fix the low-energy constants by fitting experimental data in all available reaction channels. Our results can be accessed via a web interface, the so-called chiral MAID. We explain how our program works and how it can be used for further analysis.

Electroproduction of $π^+$ above the resonance region is analyzed in the Regge model for $π+ρ$ exchanges. Importance of the roles of pion and proton form factors in the process is discussed in comparison with existing models of Kaskulov and Mosel, and of Vrancx and Rychebusch. It is shown that the present model with proton form factor of a simple dipole-type yields a better description of DESY and JLab data over those models for high $Q^2$ and $-t$ region up to 5 GeV$^2$.
