We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on TlBiSe2, which is a member of the ternary chalcogenides theoretically proposed as candidates for a new class of three-dimensional topological insulators. By measuring the energy band dispersions over the entire surface Brillouin zone, we found a direct evidence for a non-trivial surface metallic state showing a X-shaped energy dispersion within the bulk band gap. The present result unambiguously establishes that TlBiSe2 is a strong topological insulator with a single Dirac cone at the Brillouin-zone center. The observed bulk band gap of 0.4 eV is the largest among known topological insulators, making TlBiSe2 the most promising material for studying room-temperature topological phenomena.
We present first-principles calculations to predict several three dimensional (3D) topological insulators in quaternary chalcogenide compounds which are made of I$_2$-II-IV-VI$_4$ compositions and in ternary compositions of I$_3$-V-VI$_4$ famatinite compounds. Among the large members of these two families, we give examples of naturally occurring compounds which are mainly Cu-based chalcogenides. We show that these materials are candidates of 3D topological insulators or can be tuned to obtain topological phase transition by manipulating the atomic number of the other cation and anion elements.…
We have investigated several classes of strong spin-orbit chalcogenides related to the (Pb,Sn)Te series studied in connection with the Dirac fermion physics in the 1980s. Our first-principle theoretical calculations suggest that ternary chalcogenides TlBiX$_2$ and TlSbX$_2$ (X=Te, Se, S) series harbor small bandgap topological insulators with single Dirac cone on some selective surfaces whereas the isostructural and isoelectronic silver-based AgBiX$_2$ and AgSbX$_2$ (X=Te, Se, S) series do not. We find that several Tl-compounds are in the vicinity of a topological critical point. We identify t…
Novel materials with nontrivial electronic and photonic band topology are crucial for realizing novel devices with low power consumption and heat dissipation, and quantum computing free of decoherence. Here using first-principles approach, we predict a class of ternary transition metal chalcogenides (TTMC) MM'Te$_4$ exhibits dual topological characteristics: quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulators in their 2D monolayers and topological Weyl semimetals in their 3D noncentrosymmetric crystals upon van der Waals (vdW) stacking. Remarkably, we find that one can create and annihilate Weyl fermions, and …
Chalcogenide superlattices (SL), formed by the alternate stacking of GeTe and Sb$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ layers, also referred to as interfacial phase change memory (iPCM), are a leading candidate for spin based memory device applications. Theoretically, the iPCM structure it has been predicted to form a 3D topological insulator or Dirac semimetal depending on the constituent layer thicknesses. Here, we experimentally investigate the topological insulating nature of chalcogenide SLs using a helicity dependent time-resolved Kerr measurement. The helicity dependent Kerr signal is observed to exhibit a fou…
We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on Pb(Bi1-xSbx)2Te4, which is a member of lead-based ternary tellurides and has been theoretically proposed as a candidate for a new class of three-dimensional topological insulators (TIs). In PbBi2Te4, we found a topological surface state with a hexagonally deformed Dirac-cone band dispersion, indicating that this material is a strong TI with a single topological surface state at the Brillouin-zone center. Partial replacement of Bi with Sb causes a marked change in the Dirac carrier concentration, leading to the sign change of Dirac …
We have extended our new materials class search for the experimental realization of Z2 topological insulators from binary [Bi2Se3-class, Xia et.al., Nature Phys. 5, 398 (2009)] and the ternary [Half-Heusler class, Lin et.al., arXiv:1003.0155v1 (2010); arXiv:1003.2615v1 (2010)] series to non-Heusler Li-based ternary intermetallic series Li2M'X ($M'$=Cu, Ag, and Au, $X$=Sb and Bi) with CuHg2Ti-type structure. We discovered that the distorted-Li2AgSb is a lightweight compound harboring a 3D topological insulator state with Z2=-1 although the groundstate lies near a critical point, whereas the rel…
We study theoretically two-dimensional single-crystalline sheets of semiconductors that form a honeycomb lattice with a period below 10 nm. These systems could combine the usual semiconductor properties with Dirac bands. Using atomistic tight-binding calculations, we show that both the atomic lattice and the overall geometry influence the band structure, revealing materials with unusual electronic properties. In rocksalt Pb chalcogenides, the expected Dirac-type features are clouded by a complex band structure. However, in the case of zinc-blende Cd-chalcogenide semiconductors, the honeycomb n…
Binary bismuth chalcogenides Bi$_2$Se$_3$, Bi$_2$Te$_3$, and related materials are currently being extensively investigated as the reference topological insulators (TIs) due to their simple surface-state band dispersion (single Dirac cone) and relatively large bulk band gaps. Nanostructures of TIs are of particular interest as an increased surface-to-volume ratio enhances the contribution of surfaces states, meaning they are promising candidates for potential device applications. So far, the vast majority of research efforts have focused on the low-energy (0001) surfaces, which correspond to n…
We have investigated several strong spin-orbit coupling ternary chalcogenides related to the (Pb,Sn)Te series of compounds. Our first-principles calculations predict the low temperature rhombohedral ordered phase in TlBiTe2, TlBiSe2, and TlSbX2 (X=Te, Se, S) to be topologically Kane-Mele Z2 = -1 nontrivial. We identify the specific surface termination that realizes the single Dirac cone through first-principles surface state computations. This termination minimizes effects of dangling bonds making it favorable for photoemission (ARPES) experiments. Our analysis predicts that thin films of thes…
Non-invasive local probes are needed to characterize bulk defects in binary and ternary chalcogenides. These defects contribute to the non-ideal behavior of topological insulators. We have studied bulk electronic properties via $^{125}$Te NMR in Bi$_2$Te$_3$, Sb$_2$Te$_3$, Bi$_{0.5}$Sb$_{1.5}$Te$_3$, Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se and Bi$_2$Te$_2$S. A distribution of defects gives rise to asymmetry in the powder lineshapes. We show how the Knight shift, line shape and spin-lattice relaxation report on carrier density, spin-orbit coupling and phase separation in the bulk. The present study confirms that the or…
Whereas the concept of topological band-structures was developed originally for insulators with a bulk bandgap, it has become increasingly clear that the prime consequences of a non-trivial topology -- spin-momentum locking of surface states -- can also be encountered in gapless systems. Concentrating on the paradigmatic example of mercury chalcogenides HgX (X = Te, Se, S), we show that the existence of helical semimetals, i.e. semimetals with topological surface states, critically depends on the presence of crystal inversion symmetry. An infinitesimally small broken inversion symmetry (BIS) r…
We report the successful formation of bulk insulating ternary topological insulators candidate Bi2Se2Te (BST) by pulsed laser deposition technique. The films were deposited with sequential ablation of separate Bi2Se3 (BS) and Bi2Te3 (BT) targets. From the X-ray diffraction analysis and temperature dependent resistivity we were able to conclude that the as grown thin films have ordered chalcogen layers and the chemical potential in these thin films lie in the bulk gap. To realize entirely topological transport for any device applications it is essential to tune the chemical potential in the bul…
Single-crystalline β-Ag2Se nanostructures, a new class of 3D topological insulators (TIs), were synthesized using the chemical vapor transport method. The topological surface states were verified by measuring electronic transport properties including the weak antilocalization effect, Aharonov-Bohm oscillations, and Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. First-principles band calculations revealed that the band inversion in \b{eta}-Ag2Se is caused by strong spin-orbit coupling and Ag-Se bonding hybridization. These extensive investigations provide new meaningful information about silver-chalcogenide T…
A topological nodal-line semimetal is a new condensed matter state with one-dimensional bulk nodal lines and two-dimensional drumhead surface bands. Based on first-principles calculations and our effective k . p model, we propose the existence of topological nodal-line fermions in the ternary transition- metal chalcogenide TlTaSe2. The noncentrosymmetric structure and strong spin-orbit coupling give rise to spinful nodal-line bulk states which are protected by a mirror reflection symmetry of this compound. This is remarkably distinguished from other proposed nodal-line semimetals such as Cu3NP…
We present an analysis of bulk and surface electronic structures of thallium based ternary III-V-VI$_2$ series of compounds TlMQ$_2$, where M=Bi or Sb and Q=S, Se or Te, using the ab initio density functional theory framework. Based on parity analysis and (111) surface electronic structure, we predict TlSbSe$_2$, TlSbTe$_2$, TlBiSe$_2$ and TlBiTe$_2$ to be non-trivial topological insulators with a single Dirac cone at the $Γ$-point, and TlSbS$_2$ and TlBiS$_2$ to be trivial band insulators. Our predicted topological phases agree well with available angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (AR…

Recent progress in the field of topological states of matter(1,2) has largely been initiated by the discovery of bismuth and antimony chalcogenide bulk topological insulators (TIs)(3-6), followed by closely related ternary compounds(7-16) and predictions of several weak TIs(17-19). However, both the conceptual richness of Z$_2$ classification of TIs as well as their structural and compositional diversity are far from being fully exploited. Here, a new Z$_2$ topological insulator is theoretically predicted and experimentally confirmed in the $β$-phase of quasi-one-dimensional bismuth iodide Bi$…
We propose a realization of chiral Majorana modes propagating on the hinges of a 3D antiferromagnetic topological insulator, which was recently theoretically predicted and experimentally confirmed in the tetradymite-type $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$-related ternary chalgogenides. These materials consist of ferromagnetically ordered 2D layers, whose magnetization direction alternates between neighboring layers, forming an antiferromagnetic order. Besides surfaces with a magnetic gap, there also exsist gapless surfaces with a single Dirac cone, which can be gapped out when proximity coupled to an $s$-w…
