We provide an intrinsic classification of the large and small orbits for N=2, 4D extremal black holes on symmetric spaces which does not depend on the duality frame used for the charges or on the special coordinates. A coordinate independent formula for the fake superpotential W, which (at infinity) represents the black hole ADM mass, is given explicitly in terms of invariants of the N=2 special geometry.
We study the thermodynamics of near horizon near extremal Kerr (NHNEK) geometry within the framework of $AdS_2/CFT_1$ correspondence. We start by shifting the horizon of near horizon extremal Kerr (NHEK) geometry by a general finite mass. While this shift does not alter the geometry in that the resulting classical solution is still diffeomorphic to the NHEK solution, it does lead to a quantum theory different from that of NHEK. We obtain this quantum theory by means of a Robinson-Wilczek two-dimensional Kaluza-Klein reduction which enables us to introduce a finite regulator on the $AdS_2$ boun…
In this paper, we examine the emergence of conserved charges on the horizon of a particular class of extremal non-dilatonic black $p$-branes (which reduce to extremal dilatonic black holes in $D=4$ dimensions upon toroidal compactification) in the presence of a probe massless scalar field in the bulk. This result is achieved by writing the black $p$-brane geometry in a Gaussian null coordinate system which allows us to get a non-singular near-horizon geometry description. We find that the near-horizon geometry is $AdS_{p+2}\times S^2$ and that the $AdS_{p+2}$ section has an internal structure …
We construct solutions of IIB supergravity dual to non-supersymmetric states of the D1D5 system. These solutions are constructed as perturbations carrying both left and right moving momentum around the maximally rotating D1D5 ground state at linear order. They are found by extending to the asymptotically flat region the geometry generated in the decoupling limit by the action of left and right R-currents on a known D1D5 microstate. The perturbations are regular everywhere and do not carry any global charge. We also study the near-extremal limit of the solutions and derive the first non-trivial…
EVH black holes are Extremal black holes with Vanishing Horizon area, where vanishing of horizon area is a result of having a vanishing one-cycle on the horizon. We prove three theorems regarding near horizon geometry of EVH black hole solutions to generic Einstein gravity theories in diverse dimensions. These generic gravity theories are Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-Lambda theories, and gauged or ungauged supergravity theories with U(1) Maxwell fields. Our three theorems are: (1) The near horizon geometry of any EVH black hole has a three dimensional maximally symmetric subspace. (2) If the energ…
It was shown recently, building on work of Alexakis, Balehowksy, and Nachman that the geometry of (some portion of) a manifold with boundary is uniquely fixed by the areas of a foliation of two-dimensional disk-shaped surfaces anchored to the boundary. In the context of AdS/CFT, this implies that (a portion of) a four-dimensional bulk geometry can be fixed uniquely from the entanglement entropies of disk-shaped boundary regions, subject to several constraints. In this Note, we loosen some of these constraints, in particular allowing for the bulk foliation of extremal surfaces to be local and r…
We study nearly extreme black holes with nearly AdS$_2$ horizon geometry in various settings inspired by string theory. Our focus is on the scales of the nAdS$_2$ region and their relation to microscopic theory. These scales are determined by a generalization of the attractor mechanism for extremal black holes and realized geometrically as the normal derivatives along the extremal attractor flow. In some cases the scales are equivalently determined by the charge dependence of the extremal attractor by itself. Our examples include near extreme black holes in $D\geq 4$ dimensions, AdS boundary c…
We consider the near-horizon geometry of supersymmetric extremal black holes in un-gauaged and gauged 5-dimensional supergravity, coupled to abelian vector multiplets. By analyzing the global properties of the Killing spinors, we prove that the near-horizon geometries undergo a supersymmetry enhancement. This follows from a set of generalized Lichnerowicz-type theorems we establish, together with an index theory argument. As a consequence, these solutions always admit a $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R})$ symmetry group.
We discuss a new perturbation method to study the dynamics of massive vector fields on (near-)extremal static black hole spacetimes. We start with, as our background, a rather generic class of warped product metrics, and classify the field variables into the vector(axial)- and scalar(polar)-type components. On this generic background, we show that for the vector-type components, the Proca equation reduces to a single master equation, whereas the scalar-type components remain to be coupled. Then, focusing on the case of (near-)extremal static black holes in four-dimensions, we consider the near…
Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we probe the extremal black holes by studying the energy loss of a moving heavy point particle in a strongly-coupled boundary field theory at zero temperature and finite charge density. We first consider the extremal Reissner-Nordstr$\rm\ddot{o}$m-AdS (AdSRN) background black hole in the bulk and find an analytic solution of drag force which depends on the finite charge density of the boundary field theory. By studying the near horizon geometry of trailing string in the bulk, we show the IR divergency does not show the logarithmic behavior. We study also the s…
