The dynamics of two penetrating superfluids exhibit an intriguing variety of nonlinear effects. Using two distinguishable components of a Bose-Einstein condensate, we investigate the counterflow of two superfluids in a narrow channel. We present the first experimental observation of trains of dark-bright solitons generated by the counterflow. Our observations are theoretically interpreted by three-dimensional numerical simulations for the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equations and the analysis of a jump in the two relatively flowing components' densities. Counterflow induced modulational instability for this miscible system is identified as the central process in the dynamics.
We study the quantum phases of one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures in optical lattices. Assuming repulsive interparticle interactions, equal mass, and unit total filling, we calculate the ground-state phase diagram by means of both Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory and time-evolving block decimation method. We demonstrate the existence of a counterflow superfluid (CFSF) phase of polaron pairs, which are composite particles consisting of two fermions and two bosonic holes, in a broad range of the parameter space. We find that this phase naturally emerges in $^{174}$Yb-$^{173}$Yb mixtures, realiz…
In this article, we calculate the friction between two counter-flowing bosonic and fermionic super-fluids. In the limit where the boson-boson and boson-fermion interactions can be treated within the mean-field approximation, we show that the force can be related to the dynamical structure factor of the fermionic component. Finally, we provide asymptotic expressions for weakly and strongly attractive fermions and show that the damping rate obeys simple scaling laws close to the critical velocity.
The quantum dynamics of two-species bosons in an optical lattice is studied within the mean-field theory. The quantum coherence experiences periodical collapses and revivals, which depends on the relative strength of the inter-and intra-species interactions. The paired superfluidity and the counterflow superfluidity are identified and are verified by exact diagonaliztion in the two-site Hubbard model. We suggest a dynamical method of implementation and detection for the paired superfluid and the counterflow superfluidity in the optical lattices.
We study the quantum phases of mixtures of ultra-cold bosonic atoms held in an optical lattice that confines motion or hopping to one spatial dimension. The phases are found by using Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory as well as the numerical method of time evolving block decimation (TEBD). We consider a binary mixture with repulsive intra-species interactions, and either repulsive or attractive inter-species interaction. For a homogeneous system, we find paired- and counterflow-superfluid phases at different filling and hopping energies. We also predict parameter regions in which these types of…
We suggest an experimentally feasible procedure to observe paired and counterflow superfluidity in ultra-cold atom systems. We study the time evolution of one-dimensional mixtures of bosonic atoms in an optical lattice following an abrupt displacement of an additional weak confining potential. We find that the dynamic responses of the paired superfluid phase for attractive inter-species interactions and the counterflow superfluid phase for repulsive interactions are qualitatively distinct and reflect the quasi long-range order that characterizes these states. These findings suggest a clear exp…
We study the dynamics of counterflowing bosonic and fermionic lithium atoms. First, by tuning the interaction strength we measure the critical velocity vc of the system in the BEC-BCS crossover in the low temperature regime and we compare it to the recent prediction of Castin et al., Comptes Rendus Physique, 16, 241 (2015). Second, raising the temperature of the mixture slightly above the superfluid transitions reveals an unexpected phase-locking of the oscillations of the clouds. We interpret this observation as resulting from a Zeno-like effect induced by dissipation.
We study formation of solitons induced by counterflows of immiscible superfluids. Our setting is based on a quasi-one-dimensional binary Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), composed of two immiscible components with large and small numbers of atoms in them. Assuming that the "small" component moves with constant velocity, either by itself, or being dragged by a moving trap, and intrudes into the "large" counterpart, the following results are obtained. Depending on the velocity, and on whether the small component moves in the absence or in the presence of the trap, two-component dark-bright soliton…
We theoretically study the nonlinear dynamics of the instability of counter-superflow in two miscible Bose-Einstein condensates. The condensates become unstable when the relative velocity exceeds a critical value, which is called counter-superflow instability. We reveal that the counter-superflow instability can lead to quantum turbulence by numerically solving the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. The modes amplified by the instability grow into solitons and decay into quantized vortices.Eventually, the vortices become tangled and quantum turbulence of two superfluids. We show that this pro…
We demonstrate microscopically the existence of a new superfluid state of matter in a three-component Bose mixture trapped in an optical lattice. The superfluid transport involving coflow of all three components is arrested in that state, while counterflows between any pair of components are dissipationless. The presence of three components allows for three different types of counterflows with only two independent superfluid degrees of freedom.

Following recent experiments on ultracold dual superflows, we model in this work the dynamics of two harmonically trapped counterflowing superfluids. Using complementary analytical and numerical approaches, we study the shedding of elementary excitations triggered by the relative motion of the two species. We exhibit two different excitation mechanisms leading to distinct threshold velocities for the onset of dissipation: in addition to the parametric pair production present in homogeneous , galilean-invariant systems, we show that non-uniform motion and density inhomogeneities allow for a Lan…
We investigate the dynamics of two miscible superfluids experiencing fast counterflow in a narrow channel. The superfluids are formed by two distinguishable components of a trapped dilute-gas Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The onset of counterflow-induced modulational instability throughout the cloud is observed and shown to lead to the proliferation of dark-dark vector solitons. These solitons, which we observe for the first time in a BEC, do not exist in single-component systems, exhibit intriguing beating dynamics and can experience a transverse instability leading to vortex line structure…
We study a mixture of two superfluids with density-density and current-current (Andreev-Bashkin) interspecies interactions. The Andreev-Bashkin coupling gives rise to a dissipationless drag (or entrainment) between the two superfluids. Within the quantum hydrodynamics approximation, we study the relations between speeds of sound, susceptibilities and static structure factors, in a generic model in which the density and spin dynamics decouple. Due to translational invariance, the density channel does not feel the drag. The spin channel, instead, does not satisfy the usual Bijl-Feynman relation,…
Based on our current understanding of statistics of quantum turbulence as well as on results of intensive ongoing analytical, numerical and experimental studies we overview here the following problems in the large-scale, space-homogeneous, steady-state turbulence of superfluid $^4$He and $^3$He: 1) Energy spectra of normal and superfluid velocity components; 2) Cross-correlation function of normal and superfluid velocities; 3) Energy dissipation by mutual friction and viscosity; 4) Energy exchange between normal and superfluid components; 5) High-order statistics and intermittency effects. The…
We consider the hydrodynamics of the outer core of a neutron star under conditions when both neutrons and protons are superfluid. Starting from the equation of motion for the phases of the wave functions of the condensates of neutron pairs and proton pairs we derive the generalization of the Euler equation for a onecomponent fluid. These equations are supplemented by the conditions for conservation of neutron number and proton number. Of particular interest is the effect of entrainment, the fact that the current of one nucleon species depends on the momenta per nucleon of both condensates. We …
We theoretically investigate superfluid properties of a one-dimensional annular superfluid with a boost. We derive the formula of the superfluid fraction in the one-dimensional superfluid, which was originally derived by Leggett in the context of supersolid. We see that the superfluid fraction given by Leggett's formula detects the emergence of solitons in the one-dimensional annular superfluid. The formation of a bright soliton at a critical interaction strength decreases the superfluid fraction. At a critical boost velocity, a node appears in the soliton and the superfluid fraction vanishes.…
This is a Reply to Nemirovskii Comment [Phys. Rev. B 94, 146501 (2016)] on the Khomenko et al, [Phys.Rev. B v.91, 180504(2016)], in which a new form of the production term in Vinen's equation for the evolution of the vortex-line density $\cal L$ in the thermal counterflow of superfluid $^4$He in a channel was suggested. To further substantiate the suggested form which was questioned in the Comment, we present a physical explanation for the improvement of the closure suggested in Khomenko et al [Phys.Rev. B v. 91, 180504(2016)] in comparison to the form proposed by Vinen. We also discuss the cl…
We show that spinor Bose gases subject to a quadratic Zeeman effect exhibit coexisting superfluidity and spin superfluidity, and study the interplay between these two distinct types of superfluidity. To illustrate that the basic principles governing these two types of superfluidity are the same, we describe the magnetization and particle-density dynamics in a single hydrodynamic framework. In this description spin and mass supercurrents are driven by their respective chemical potential gradients. As an application, we propose an experimentally accessible stationary state, where the two types o…
We explore the quantum dynamics of a bright matter-wave soliton in a quasi-one-dimensional bosonic superfluid with attractive interactions. Specifically, we focus on the dissipative forces experienced by the soliton due to its interaction with Bogoliubov excitations. Using the collective coordinate approach and the Keldysh formalism, a Langevin equation of motion for the soliton is derived from the first principle. The equation contains a stochastic Langevin force (associated with quantum noise) and a non-local in time dissipative force, which appears due to inelastic scattering of Bogoliubov …
We study ground-state phase diagrams and excitation spectra of Bose-Bose mixtures in an optical lattice by applying the Gutzwiller approximation to the two-component Bose-Hubbard model. A case of equal hoppings and equal intra-component interactions for both components is considered. Due to the existence of inter-component interaction, there appear several quantum phases, such as the superfluid, paired superfluid, and counterflow superfluid phases. We find that the transition from superfluid (SF) to Mott insulator (MI) with even filling factors can be of the first order for a wide range of the…
The recent experimental realization of Bose-Fermi superfluid mixtures of dilute ultracold atomic gases has opened new perspectives in the study of quantum many-body systems. Depending on the values of the scattering lengths and the amount of bosons and fermions, a uniform Bose-Fermi mixture is predicted to exhibit a fully mixed phase, a fully separated phase or, in addition, a purely fermionic phase coexisting with a mixed phase. The occurrence of this intermediate configuration has interesting consequences when the system is nonuniform. In this work we theoretically investigate the case of so…
We unravel the spontaneous generation of vortex-bright-soliton structures in binary Bose-Einstein condensates with a small mass imbalance between the species confined in a two-dimensional harmonic trap where one of the two species has been segmented into two parts by a potential barrier. To trigger the dynamics the potential barrier is suddenly removed and subsequently the segments perform a counterflow dynamics. We consider a relative phase difference of $π$ between the segments, while a singly quantized vortex may be imprinted at the center of the other species. The number of vortex structur…
The microscopic control available over cold atoms in optical lattices has opened new opportunities to study the properties of quantum spin models. While a lot of attention is focussed on experimentally realizing ground or thermal states via adiabatic loading, it would often be more straightforward to prepare specific simple product states and to probe the properties of interacting spins by observing their dynamics. We explore this possibility for spin-1/2 and spin-1 models that can be realized with bosons in optical lattices, and which exhibit \textit{XY}-ferromagnetic (or counterflow spin sup…
We study theoretically the instability of countersuperflow, i.e., two counterpropagating miscible superflows, in uniform two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. Countersuperflow instability causes mutual friction between the superfluids, causing a momentum exchange between the two condensates, when the relative velocity of the counterflow exceeds a critical value. The momentum exchange leads to nucleation of vortex rings from characteristic density patterns due to the nonlinear development of the instability. Expansion of the vortex rings drastically accelerates the momentum exchange, leading…
We study the three-dimensional bosonic t-J model, i.e., the t-J model of "bosonic electrons", at finite temperatures. This model describes the $s={1 \over 2}$ Heisenberg spin model with the anisotropic exchange coupling $J_{\bot}=-αJ_z$ and doped {\it bosonic} holes, which is an effective system of the Bose-Hubbard model with strong repulsions. The bosonic "electron" operator $B_{rσ}$ at the site $r$ with a two-component (pseudo-)spin $σ(=1,2)$ is treated as a hard-core boson operator, and represented by a composite of two slave particles; a "spinon" described by a Schwinger boson (CP$^1$ boso…
Presented is a study of a spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by unitary quantum simulations of time-dependent soliton-soliton scattering. The quantum simulation method is based on a quantum lattice algorithm which is designed for implementation on a future digital quantum computer but is tested today using a parallel computing architecture based on graphical processing units (GPUs). We analytically solve the spin-2 BEC equations of motion, a nonlinear system of 5 coupled Gross-Pitiaevskii (GP) equations, in one- and two-spatial dimensions. In 1D there are 16 bright soliton and 16 dark solit…
Taking an open quantum systems approach, we derive a collective equation of motion for the dynamics of a matter-wave bright soliton moving through a thermal cloud of a distinct atomic species. The reservoir interaction involves energy transfer without particle transfer between the soliton and thermal cloud, thus damping the soliton motion without altering its stability against collapse. We derive a Langevin equation for the soliton centre of mass velocity in the form of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process with analytical drift and diffusion coefficients. This collective motion is confirmed by simula…
Microcavity polaritons are composite half-light half-matter quasi-particles, which have recently been demonstrated to exhibit rich physical properties, such as non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation, parametric scattering and superfluidity. At the same time, polaritons have some important advantages over photons for information processing applications, since their excitonic component leads to weaker diffraction and stronger inter-particle interactions, implying, respectively, tighter localization and lower powers for nonlinear functionality. Here we present the first experimental observati…
