The phase diagram of the first layer of H$_2$ adsorbed on top of a single graphene sheet has been calculated by means of a series of diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) simulations. We have found that, as in the case of $^4$He, the ground state of molecular hydrogen is a $\sqrt3 \times \sqrt3$ commensurate structure, followed, upon a pressure increase, by an incommensurate triangular solid. A striped phase of intermediate density was also considered, and found lying on top of the equilibrium curve separating both commensurate and incommensurate solids.
We report diffusion Monte Carlo calculations on the phase diagrams of para-H2 and ortho-D2 adsorbed on top of a first layer of the same substances on graphene. We found that the ground state of the second layer is a triangular incommensurate solid for both isotopes. The densities for promotion to a second layer and for the onset of a two-dimensional solid on that second layer compare favorably to available experimental data in both cases.
First-principles calculations using density functional theory and two methods in comparison, Quantum ESPRESSO and Siesta, are done on large supercells which describe different placements of two identical adsorbed alkali metal atoms (of either Na, or K species) on the monolayer of boron carbide BC3. The energy of single-atom adsorption over the center of C6 ring, of the C4B2 hexagon and over a boron atom have been preliminarily estimated, the effect of applying the Grimme D2 correction on the adsorption characteristics evaluated, and the comparison of these results with available data discussed…
We have performed an {\it ab initio} theoretical investigation of graphene sheet adsorbed on amorphous SiO$_2$ surface (G/a-SiO$_2$). We find that graphene adsorbs on the a-SiO$_2$ surface through van der Waals interactions. The inhomogeneous topology of the a-SiO$_2$ clean surface promotes a total charge density displacement on the adsorbed graphene sheet, giving rise to electron-rich as well as hole-rich regions on the graphene. Such anisotropic distribution of the charge density may contribute to the reduction of the electronic mobility in G/a-SiO$_2$ systems. Furthermore, the adsorbed grap…
We show by first-principles calculations that the electronic properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbons (Z-GNRs) adsorbed on Si(001) substrate strongly depend on ribbon width and adsorption orientation. Only narrow Z-GNRs with even rows of zigzag chains across their width adsorbed perpendicularly to the Si dimer rows possess an energy gap, while wider Z-GNRs are metallic due to width-dependent interface hybridization. The Z-GNRs can be metastably adsorbed parallel to the Si dimer rows, but show uniform metallic nature independent of ribbon width due to adsorption induced dangling-bond states on…
It is shown that lines of adsorbed hydrogen pair atoms divide the graphene sheet into strips and form hydrogen-based superlattice structures (2HG-SL). We show that the forming of 2HG-SL drastically changes the electronic properties of graphene from semimetal to semiconductor. The electronic spectra of "zigzag" (n,0) 2HG-SL is similar to that of (n,0) carbon nanotubes and have a similar oscillation of band gap with number n, but with non-zero minimal values. The composite dual-periodic (n,0)+(m,0) 2HG-SLs of "zigzag" strips are analyzed, with the conclusion that they may be treated as quasi-two…
The structures and electron properties of new superlattices formed on graphene by adsorbed hydrogen molecules are theoretically described. It has been shown that superlattices of the (n, 0) zigzag type with linearly arranged pairs of H atoms have band structures similar to the spectra of (n, 0) carbon nanotubes. At the same time, superlattices of the (n, n) type with a "staircase" of adsorbed pairs of H atoms are substantially metallic with a high density of electronic states at the Fermi level and this property distinguishes their spectra from the spectra of the corresponding (n, n) nanotubes…
We systematically investigate the magnetic and electronic properties of graphene adsorbed with diluted 3d-transition and noble metal atoms using first principles calculation methods. We find that most transition metal atoms (i.e. Sc, Ti, V, Mn, Fe) favor the hollow adsorption site, and the interaction between magnetic adatoms and π-orbital of graphene induces sizable exchange field and Rashba spin-orbit coupling, which together open a nontrivial bulk gap near the Dirac points leading to the quantum-anomalous Hall effect. We also find that the noble metal atoms (i.e. Cu, Ag, Au) prefer the top …
Graphene modifications with oxygen or hydrogen are well known in contrast to carbon attachment to the graphene lattice. The chemical modification of graphene sheets with aromatic diazonium ions (carbon attachment) is analyzed by confocal Raman spectroscopy. The temporal and spatial evolution of surface adsorbed species allowed accurate tracking of the chemical reaction and identification of intermediates. The controlled transformation of sp2 to sp3 carbon proceeds in two separate steps. The presented derivatization is selective for single layer graphene and allows controlled transformation of …
We present ab initio calculations for single-atom vacancies in graphene. In agreement with earlier work, we find that vacancies are responsible for the magnetism recently observed experimentally, creating a center with net spin. For small supercells, there is a strong symmetry breaking in the supercell with respect to the perfect graphene structure, and this symmetry breaking is much smaller for larger supercells. The influence of the adsorption of H, O and N atoms on the spin center of the bare single-atom vacancy and its influence on the magnetism induced in these samples is investigated. A …
Ab initio calculations within the density-functional theory formalism are performed to investigate the ground state, electric charge doping, and electronic properties of titanium and titanium dioxide monolayers adsorbed on a graphene surface. A new ground state structrure of Ti monolayer adsorbed on graphene is reported which is shown to be stable up to T = 500 K. Effects due to lower and higher Ti adatoms coverage are studied. We find that the adsorbed Ti provides a strong n-type doping which supports recent experimental observations. On the other hand, TiO_2 can induce both p- and n-type dop…
Many recent calculations have been performed to study a Co atom adsorbed on graphene, with significantly varying results on the nature of the bonding. We use auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) and a size-correction embedding scheme to accurately calculate the binding energy of Co on graphene. We find that as a function of the distance h between the Co atom and the six-fold hollow site, there are three distinct ground states corresponding to three electronic configurations of the Co atom. Two of these states provide binding and exhibit a double-well feature with nearly equal binding en…
The electronic structure of pentacene decorated with dipole groups (d-pentacene) and adsorbed onto a graphene substrate has been studied within the density functional theory. Three reference configurations have been considered, namely the ideal molecule without distortions, the actual molecule including intramolecular distortions and the molecule adsorbed onto graphene. Calculations show a noticeable charge redistribution within the d-pentacene + graphene system due to molecular distortion, as well as the formation of weak $π$-bonds between the molecule and the substrate. Additionally, the eff…
We have studied the electronic and magnetic properties of graphene and their modification due to the adsorption of water and other gas molecules. Water and gas molecules adsorbed on nanoscale graphene were found to play the role of defects which facilitate the tunability of the bandgap and allow us to control the magnetic ordering of localized states at the edges. The adsorbed molecules push the wavefunctions corresponding to $α$-spin (up) and $β$-spin (down) states of graphene to the opposite (zigzag) edges. This breaks the sublattice and molecular point group symmetry that results in opening…
The adsorbed structure of 1-pyrenebutanoic acid succinimidyl ester (PASE) on graphene was investigated based on density functional theory. We found two locally stable structures: a straight structure with the chainlike part of butanoic acid succinimidyl ester (BSE) lying down and a bent structure with the BSE part directed away from graphene, keeping the pyrene (Py) part adsorbed on graphene. Then, to elucidate the adsorption mechanism, we separately estimated the contributions of the Py and BSE parts to the entire PASE adsorption, and the adsorption effect of the BSE part was found to be seco…
Nickel-adsorbed graphene was prepared by first synthesizing graphite oxide (GO) by modified Hummers' method and then reducing a solution containing both GO and $Ni^{2+}$. EDX analysis showed 31 atomic percent nickel was present. Magnetization measurements under both dc and ac magnetic fields were carried out in the temperature range 2 K to 300 K. The zero field cooled and field cooled magnetization data showed a pronounced irreversibility at a temperature around 20 K. The analysis of the ac susceptibility data were carried out by both Vogel-Fulcher as well as power law. From dynamic scaling an…
We present classical molecular dynamics calculations of the behavior of copper and gold nanoparticles on a graphene sheet, sheared with a constant applied force $F_{\rm a}$. The force $F_{\rm s}$ acting on the particle from the substrate depends on the material of the nanoparticles (Au or Cu), and exhibits a sawtooth dependency on time, which we attribute to local commensurability between the metal nanoparticle surface atomic positions with the graphene lattice. The time-averaged value of $F_{\rm s}$ (the friction force) acting on Au nanoparticles increases linearly with the contact area, havi…
The phase diagrams of $^4$He adsorbed on the external surfaces of single armchair carbon nanotubes with radii in the range 3.42 -- 10.85 Å\ are calculated using the diffusion Monte Carlo method. For nanotubes narrower than a (10,10) one, the ground state is an incommensurate solid similar to the one found for H$_2$ on the same substrates. For wider nanotubes, the phase with the minimum energy per particle is a liquid layer. Curved $\sqrt 3 \times \sqrt 3$ registered solids similar to the ones found on graphene and graphite were unstable for all the tubes considered.
Li and Na attachment to free tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) molecules and TCNE adsorbed on doped graphene is studied using density functional theory. While TCNE is adsorbed only weakly on ideal graphene, we identified a configuration in which TCNE is chemisorbed on Al-doped graphene via molecule C atom and a surface oxygen atom. Up to four (five) Li and Na atoms can be stored on both free (adsorbed) TCNE with binding energies stronger than cohesive energies of the Li and Na metals. When storing up to three atoms per molecule, it should be possible to avoid reduction of common battery electrolytes. …
The revealing properties of transition metal (T)-doped graphene systems are investigated with the use of the first-principles method. The detailed calculations cover the bond length, position and height of adatoms, binding energy, atom-dominated band structure, adatom-induced free carrier density as well as energy gap, spin-density distributions, spatial charge distribution, and atom-, orbital- and spin-projected density-of-states (DOS). The magnetic configurations are clearly identified from the total magnetic moments, spin-split energy bands, spin-density distributions and spin-decomposed DO…
At the heart of current information nanotechnology lies the search for ideal platforms hosting the smallest possible magnets, i.e. single atoms with magnetic moments pointing out-of-plane, as requested in a binary-type of memory. For this purpose, a 2D material such as graphene would be an ideal substrate thanks to its intrinsic low electron and phonon densities, as well as its 6-fold symmetry. Here we investigate, from first-principles, a fundamental mechanism detrimental for the magnetic stability: the zero-point spin-fluctuations modifying the effective energy landscape perceived by the loc…
Pulay terms arise in the Hellman-Feynman forces in electronic structure calculations when one employs a basis set made of localized orbitals that move with their host atoms. If the total energy of the system depends on a subspace population defined in terms of the localized orbitals across multiple atoms, then unconventional Pulay terms will emerge due to the variation of the orbital nonorthogonality with ionic translation. Here, we derive the required exact expressions for such terms, which cannot be eliminated by orbital orthonormalization. We have implemented these corrected ionic forces wi…
We investigate the adsorption sites of $3d$ transition metal (TM) adatoms by means of low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Co and Ni adatoms were adsorbed on two types of graphene on SiC(0001), i.e. pristine epitaxial monolayer graphene (MLG) and quasi-free-standing monolayer graphene (QFMLG). In the case of QFMLG, two stable adsorption sites are identified, while in the case of MLG, only one adsorption site is observed. Our experimental results reveal the decoupling efficiency as a crucial parameter for determining the adsorption site as well as the electronic prope…
We calculate the potential energy surfaces for graphene adsorbed on Cu(111), Ni(111), and Co(0001) using density functional theory and the Random Phase Approximation (RPA). For these adsorption systems covalent and dispersive interactions are equally important and while commonly used approximations for exchange-correlation functionals give inadequate descriptions of either van der Waals or chemical bonds, RPA accounts accurately for both. It is found that the adsorption is a delicate competition between a weak chemisorption minimum close to the surface and a physisorption minimum further from …
We present a theoretical study of the dynamics of H atoms adsorbed on graphene bilayers with Bernal stacking. First, through extensive density functional theory calculations, including van der Waals interactions, we obtain the activation barriers involved in the desorption and migration processes of a single H atom. These barriers, along with attempt rates and the energetics of H pairs, are used as input parameters in kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to study the time evolution of an initial random distribution of adsorbed H atoms. The simulations reveal that, at room temperature, H atoms occup…
We propose a new class of materials, which can be viewed as graphene derivatives involving Group IA or Group VIIA elements, forming what we refer to as graphXene. We show that in several cases large band gaps can be found to open up, whereas in other cases a semimetallic behavior is found. Formation energies indicate that under ambient conditions, sp$^3$ and mixed sp$^2$/sp$^3$ systems will form. The results presented allow us to propose that by careful tuning of the relative concentration of the adsorbed atoms, it should be possible to tune the band gap of graphXene to take any value between …
This article discusses the behavior of submonolayer quantum films (He and H2) on graphene and newly discovered surfaces that are derived from graphene. Among these substrates are graphane (abbreviated GH), which has an H atom bonded to each C atom, and fluorographene (GF). For the graphite case, extensive experimental and theoretical investigations have revealed that the phase diagrams of the bose gases 4He and para-H2 are qualitatively similar, differing primarily in a higher characteristic temperature scale for H2 than for He. The phase behaviors of these films on one side of pristine graphe…
We discuss Molecular Dynamics (MD) computer simulations of tetracosane (C24H50) monolayer physisorbed onto a graphite surface. The alkane molecules are simulated with explicit hydrogens, and the graphite substrate is represented as an all-atom struc-ture having six graphene layers. The tetracosane dynamics modeled in the fully ato-mistic manner agree well with experiment. The low-temperature ordered solid orga-nizes in rectangular centered structure, incommensurate with underlying graphite. Above T = 200 K, as the molecules start to lose their translational and orientational order via gauche d…
