Hard bremsstrahlung production in proton-proton collisions has been studied with the ANKE spectrometer at COSY-Juelich in the energy range of 353-800 MeV by detecting the final proton pair {pp}_s from the pp -> {pp}_s reaction with very low excitation energy. Differential cross sections were measured at small diproton c.m. angles from 0 to 20 degrees and the average over this angular interval reveals a broad peak at a beam energy around 650 MeV with a FWHM of about 220 MeV, suggesting the influence of Delta(1232)N intermediate states. Comparison with deuteron photodisintegration shows that the cross section for diproton production is up to two orders of magnitude smaller, due largely to differences in the selection rules.
In this paper a role of many-nucleon dynamics in formation of the compound $^{5}{\rm Li}$ nucleus in the scattering of protons off $α$-particles at the proton incident energies up to 20 MeV is investigated. We propose a bremsstrahlung model allowing to extract information about probabilities of formation of such nucleus on the basis of analysis of experimental cross-sections of the bremsstrahlung photons. In order to realize this approach, the model includes elements of microscopic theory and also probabilities of formation of the short-lived compound nucleus. Results of calculations of the br…
Emission of bremsstrahlung photons accompanying proton decay of nuclei is studied. The new improved multipolar model describing such a process is presented. The angular formalism of calculations of the matrix elements is stated in details. The bremsstrahlung probabilities for the $^{157}{\rm Ta}$, $^{161}{\rm Re}$, $^{167}{\rm Ir}$ and $^{185}{\rm Bi}$ nuclei decaying from the $2s_{1/2}$ state, the $^{109}_{53}{\rm I}_{56}$ and $^{112}_{55}{\rm Cs}_{57}$ nuclei decaying from the $1d_{5/2}$ state, the $^{146}_{69}{\rm Tm}_{77}$ and $^{151}_{71}{\rm Lu}_{80}$ nuclei decaying from the $0h_{11/2}$…
A new approach is presented to determine the proton-nucleus interactions from the analysis of the accompanying photon bremsstrahlung. We study the scattering of $p + ^{208}{\rm Pb}$ at the proton incident energies of 140 and 145~MeV, and the scattering of $p + ^{12}{\rm C}$, $p + ^{58}{\rm Ni}$, $p + ^{107}{\rm Ag}$ and $p + ^{197}{\rm Au}$ at the proton incident energy of 190~MeV. The model determines contributions of the coherent emission (formed by an interaction between the scattering proton and nucleus as a whole without the internal many-nucleon structure), incoherent emission (formed by…
Hard photons from neutron-proton bremsstrahlung in intermediate energy heavy-ion reactions are examined as a potential probe of the nuclear symmetry energy within a transport model. Effects of the symmetry energy on the yields and spectra of hard photons are found to be generally smaller than those due to the currently existing uncertainties of both the in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections and the photon production probability in the elementary process $pn\to pnγ$. Very interestingly, nevertheless, the ratio of hard photon spectra $R_{1/2}(γ)$ from two reactions using isotopes of the same …
We investigate emission of the bremsstrahlung photons in the scattering of protons off nuclei at the $Δ$-resonance energy region. Including properties of $Δ$-resonance in the nucleus-target to the bremsstrahlung model, we find the following. (1) Ratio between incoherent emission and coherent emission is about $10^{6}$--$10^{7}$ for $p + \isotope[197]{Au}$ (without $Δ$-resonance) at energy of proton beam $E_{\rm p}$ of 190~MeV, where the calculated full bremsstrahlung spectrum is in good agreement with experimental data. This confirms importance of incoherent processes in study of $Δ$-resonance…
The neutron-proton bremsstrahlung process $(np \to npγ)$ is known to be sensitive to meson exchange currents in the nucleon-nucleon interaction. The triply differential cross section for this reaction has been measured for the first time at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center, using an intense, pulsed beam of up to 700 MeV neutrons to bombard a liquid hydrogen target. Scattered neutrons were observed at six angles between 12$^\circ$ and 32$^\circ$, and the recoil protons were observed in coincidence at 12$^\circ$, 20$^\circ$, and 28$^\circ$ on the opposite side of the beam. Measurement of th…

The $pp\to ppγ$ bremsstrahlung cross section is calculated within the method of coordinate space representation. It is shown that in the beam energy range of 350--450~MeV a deep attractive NN-potential with forbidden states (Moscow potential) and realistic meson exchange potentials (MEP) give rise to the cross sections that differ essentially in shape: the cross sections nearly coincide in the minima but differ by a factor of 5 approximately in the maxima. Therefore, the $pp\to ppγ$ reaction at energies $\sim$350--450~Mev can be used to study $NN$ interaction off-shell and to discriminate expe…
A new model of the bremsstrahlung emission which accompanies proton decay and collisions of protons off nuclei in the energy region from the lowest up to intermediate, has been developed. This model includes spin formalism, potential approach for description of interaction between protons and nuclei, and operator of emission includes component of the magnetic emission (defined on the basis of Pauli equation). In the problem of the bremsstrahlung during the proton decay in the first time a role of the magnetic emission is studied using such a model. For the studied $^{146}{\rm Tm}$ nucleus it h…
Photon energy spectra up to the kinematic limit have been measured in 190 MeV proton reactions with light and heavy nuclei to investigate the influence of the multiple-scattering process on the photon production. Relative to the predictions of models based on a quasi-free production mechanism a strong suppression of bremsstrahlung is observed in the low-energy region of the photon spectrum. We attribute this effect to the interference of photon amplitudes due to multiple scattering of nucleons in the nuclear medium.
The study of elastic bremsstrahlung and electron tagging in electron-proton or ion collisions is gaining importance with the planned construction of several experimental facilities focused on deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) measurements. This paper describes a program which generates bremsstrahlung photons in electron-proton and electron-ion interactions as well as scattered electrons in bremsstrahlung processes and in a quasi-real photon approximation to the general DIS process. The effects of electron beam divergence and the spread of the interaction vertex are implemented. The program can b…
Model of angular bremsstrahlung of photons emitted during $α$-decay is presented. A special emphasis is given on development of unified formalism of matrix elements in the dipole and multipolar approaches. A probability of the emission of photons calculated on the basis of the multipole model without any normalization on experimental data (i. e. in absolute scale) is found at $90^{\circ}$ of the angle $\vartheta_{αγ}$ between directions of motion of the $α$-particle (with its tunneling under barrier) and emission of photons to be in a good agreement with the newest experimental data for the $^…
We compute bremsstrahlung arising from the acceleration of individual charged baryons and mesons during the time evolution of high-energy Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider using a microscopic transport model. We elucidate the connection between bremsstrahlung and charge stopping by colliding artificial pure proton on pure neutron nuclei. From the intensity of low energy bremsstrahlung, the time scale and the degree of stopping could be accurately extracted without measuring any hadronic observables.
The pp -> pp gamma reaction has been measured at a beam energy of 310 MeV by detecting both final protons in the PROMICE-WASA facility and identifying a missing-mass peak. For those events where the pp excitation is less than 3 MeV, the final diproton is almost purely in the 1S0 state and, under these conditions, there is complete coverage in the photon c.m. angle theta_gamma. The linear behaviour observed in cos^2(theta_gamma) shows that there is almost no influence of an E2 multipole at this energy, though the E1 and M2 must be rather similar in size.
We present the first measurement of the induced proton polarization P_n in pi^0 electroproduction on the proton around the Delta resonance. The measurement was made at a central invariant mass and a squared four-momentum transfer of W=1231 MeV and Q^2 = 0.126 (GeV/c)^2, respectively. We measured a large induced polarization, P_n = -0.397 +/- 0.055 +/- 0.009. The data suggest that the scalar background is larger than expected from a recent effective Hamiltonian model.
The nucleosynthesis of heavy proton-rich nuclei in a stellar photon bath at temperatures of the astrophysical $γ$-process was investigated where the photon bath was simulated by the superposition of bremsstrahlung spectra with different endpoint energies. The method was applied to derive ($γ$,n) cross sections and reaction rates for several platinum isotopes.
Exclusive measurements of the $pp \to ppπ^0π^0$ reaction have been performed at CELSIUS/WASA at energies from threshold up to $T_p$ = 1.3 GeV. Total and differential cross sections have been obtained. Here we concentrate on energies $T_p \ge$ 1 GeV, where the $ΔΔ$ excitation becomes the leading process. No evidence is found for a significant ABC effect beyond that given by the conventional $t$-channel $ΔΔ$ excitation. This holds also for the double-pionic fusion to the quasibound $^2$He. The data are compared to model predictions, which are based on both pion and $ρ$ exchange. Total and differ…
We analyse the proton Compton-scattering differential cross section for photon energies up to 325 MeV using Chiral Effective Field Theory and extract new values for the electric and magnetic polarisabilities of the proton. Our EFT treatment builds in the key physics in two different regimes: photon energies around the pion mass ("low energy") and the higher energies where the Delta(1232) resonance plays a key role. The Compton amplitude is complete at N4L0, O(e^2 delta^4), in the low-energy region, and at NLO, O(e^2 delta^0), in the resonance region. Throughout, the Delta-pole graphs are dress…

Photoproduction of pi0 mesons was studied with the Crystal-Barrel detector at ELSA for incident energies from 300 MeV to 3 GeV. Differential cross sections d sigma /d Omega, d sigma/d t, and the total cross section are presented. For E(gamma) < 3 GeV, the angular distributions agree well with the SAID parametrization. At photon energies above 1.5 GeV, a strong forward peaking indicates t-channel exchange to be the dominant process. The rapid variations of the cross section with energy and angle indicate production of resonances. An interpretation of the data within the Bonn-Gatchina partial wa…
The elastic and radiative pion(+)-proton scattering are studied in the framework of an effective Lagrangian model for the Delta^{++} resonance and its interactions. The finite width effects of this spin-3/2 resonance are introduced in the scattering amplitudes through a complex mass scheme to respect electromagnetic gauge invariance. The resonant pole (Delta^{++}) and background contributions (rho^0, sigma, Delta and neutron states) are separated according to the principles of the analytic S-matrix theory. The mass and width parameters of the Δ^{++} obtained from a fit to experimental data on …
For the first time, the total yield and inclusive spectra of the $Δ^{++}(1232)$isobar are measured in $νp$ and $νn$ charged-current interactions. An indication is obtained that the $Δ^{++}(1232)$ production mainly results from the neutrino scattering on the valence d- quark of the target nucleon. The total yield of $Δ^{++}(1232)$ in $νp$ interactions is compatible with that measured in hadronic interactions of the same net charge and net baryonic number. The yield of $Δ^{++}(1232)$ in $νn$ interactions is significantly suppressed as compared to the case of the proton target. The form of the sq…
We examine the two-photon exchange corrections to elastic electron-proton scattering within a dispersive approach, including contributions from both Nucleon and Delta intermediate states. The dispersive analysis avoids off-shell uncertainties inherent in traditional approaches based on direct evaluation of loop diagrams, and guarantees the correct unitary behavior in the high energy limit. Using empirical information on the electromagnetic nucleon elastic and N-Delta transition form factors, we compute the two-photon exchange corrections both algebraically and numerically. Results are compared…

We consider two-photon exchange (TPE) in the elastic electron-proton scattering and study the contribution arising from the production of Delta(1232) resonance in the intermediate state. We calculate all three TPE amplitudes (generalized form factors), and find that the Delta contribution mainly influences generalized electric form factor (contrary to the elastic contribution, which affects magnetic form factor), and the effect grows with Q^2. If the corresponding correction is applied to the recent polarization transfer measurements of proton form factors, their results will change markedly. …
Differential and total cross-sections for photoproduction of gamma proton to proton pi0 omega and gamma proton to Delta+ omega were determined from measurements of the CB-ELSA experiment, performed at the electron accelerator ELSA in Bonn. The measurements covered the photon energy range from the production threshold up to 3GeV.
The total cross sections for pionic charge exchange on hydrogen were measured using a transmission technique on thin CH2 and C targets. Data were taken for pi- lab energies from 39 to 247 MeV with total errors of typically 2% over the Delta-resonance and up to 10% at the lowest energies. Deviations from the predictions of the SAID phase shift analysis in the 60 to 80 MeV region are interpreted as evidence for isospin-symmetry breaking in the s-wave amplitudes. The charge dependence of the Delta-resonance properties appears to be smaller than previously reported.
Results on two-particle angular correlations for charged particles emitted in pPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV are presented. The analysis uses two million collisions collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The correlations are studied over a broad range of pseudorapidity, eta, and full azimuth, phi, as a function of charged particle multiplicity and particle transverse momentum, pt. In high-multiplicity events, a long-range (2 < abs(Delta(eta)) < 4), near-side (Delta(phi) approximately 0) structure emerges in the two-particle Delta(eta)-Delta(phi) corr…
Hard-photon (E$_γ >$ 30 MeV) emission issuing from proton-neutron bremsstrahlung collisions is investigated in four different heavy-ion reactions at intermediate bombarding energies ($^{36}$Ar+$^{197}$Au, $^{107}$Ag, $^{58}$Ni, $^{12}$C at 60{\it A} MeV) coupling the TAPS photon spectrometer with two charged-particle multidetectors covering more than 80% of the solid angle. The hard-photon spectra of the three heavier targets result from the combination of two distinct exponential distributions with different slope parameters, a result which deviates from the behaviour expected for hard-photon…
This dissertation investigated selected processes involving baryons and nuclei in hard scattering reactions. Through these processes, this work explored the constituent structure of baryons and the mechanisms through which the interactions between these constituents ultimately control the selected reactions. First, hard nucleon-nucleon elastic scattering was studied considering the quark exchange (QE) between the nucleons to be the dominant mechanism of interaction in the constituent picture. It was found that an angular asymmetry exhibited by proton-neutron (pn) elastic scattering data is exp…
A precision measurement of absolute pi+p and pi-p elastic differential cross sections at incident pion laboratory kinetic energies from T_pi= 141.15 to 267.3 MeV is described. Data were obtained detecting the scattered pion and recoil proton in coincidence at 12 laboratory pion angles from 55 to 155 degrees for pi+p, and six angles from 60 to 155 degrees for pi-p. Single arm measurements were also obtained for pi+p energies up to 218.1 MeV, with the scattered pi+ detected at six angles from 20 to 70 degrees. A flat-walled, super-cooled liquid hydrogen target as well as solid CH2 targets were u…
This work evaluates the model dependence of the electric and Coulomb quadrupole amplitudes (E2, C2) in the predominantly M1 (magnetic dipole-quark spin flip) gamma* N -> Delta transition. Both the model-to-model dependence and the intrinsic model uncertainties are evaluated and found to be comparable to each other and no larger than the experimental errors. It is confirmed that the quadrupole amplitudes have been accurately measured indicating significant non-zero angular momentum components in the proton and Delta.
