In a recent paper, four of the present authors proposed a class of dark matter models where generalized parity symmetry leads to equality of dark matter abundance with baryon asymmetry of the Universe and predicts dark matter mass to be around 5 GeV. In this note we explore how this model can be tested in direct search experiments. In particular, we point out that if the dark matter happens to be the mirror neutron, the direct detection cross section has the unique feature that it increases at low recoil energy unlike the case of conventional WIMPs. It is also interesting to note that the predicted spin-dependent scattering could make significant contribution to the total direct detection rate, especially for light nucleus. With this scenario, one could explain recent DAMA and CoGeNT results.
The paper suggests a left-right mirror symmetric model to account for the baryogenesis and asymmetric dark matter. The model can simultaneously accommodate the standard model, neutrino physics, matter-antimatter asymmetry and dark matter. In particular, it naturally and elegantly explains the origin of the baryon and dark matter asymmetries, and clearly gives the close interrelations of them. In addition, the model predicts a number of interesting results, e.g. the cold dark matter neutrino mass is $3.1$ times the proton mass. It is also feasible and promising to test the model in future exper…
The long-standing model-independent annual modulation effect measured by DAMA Collaboration is examined in the context of asymmetric mirror dark matter, assuming that dark atoms interact with target nuclei in the detector via kinetic mixing between mirror and ordinary photons, both being massless. The relevant ranges for the kinetic mixing parameter are obtained taking into account various existing uncertainties in nuclear and particle physics quantities as well as characteristic density and velocity distributions of dark matter in different halo models.
Mirror universe is a fundamental way to restore parity symmetry in weak interactions. It naturally provides the lightest mirror nucleon as a unique GeV-scale asymmetric dark matter particle candidate. We conjecture that the mirror parity is respected by the fundamental interaction Lagrangian, and its possible soft breaking arises only from non-interaction terms in the gauge-singlet sector. We realize the spontaneous mirror parity violation by minimizing the vacuum Higgs potential, and derive the corresponding Higgs spectrum. We demonstrate that the common origin of CP violation in the visible …
Models of asymmetric dark matter (ADM) seek to explain the apparent coincidence between the present-day mass densities of visible and dark matter, $Ω_{\mathrm{DM}} \simeq 5Ω_{\mathrm{VM}}$. However, most ADM models only relate the number densities of visible and dark matter without motivating the similar particle masses. We expand upon a recent work that obtained a natural mass relationship in a mirror matter ADM model with two Higgs doublets in each sector, by looking to implement dark electroweak baryogenesis as the means of asymmetry generation. We explore two aspects of the mechanism: the …
Most models for asymmetric dark matter allow for dark matter self annihilation processes, which can wash out the asymmetry at temperatures near and below the dark matter mass. We study the coupled set of Boltzmann equations for the symmetric and antisymmetric dark matter number densities, and derive conditions applicable to a large class of models for the absence of a significant wash-out of an asymmetry. These constraints are applied to various existing scenarios. In the case of left- or right-handed sneutrinos, very large electroweak gaugino masses, or very small mixing angles are required.
The process of neutron-mirror neutron oscillation, motivated by symmetric mirror dark matter models, is governed by two parameters: $n-n'$ mixing parameter $δ$ and $n-n'$ mass splitting $Δ$. For neutron mirror neutron oscillation to be observable, the splitting between their masses $Δ$ must be small and current experiments lead to $δ\leq 2\times 10^{-27}$ GeV and$Δ\leq 10^{-24}$ GeV. We show that in mirror universe models where this process is observable, this small mass splitting constrains the way that one must implement asymmetric inflation to satisfy the limits of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis …
A recently proposed asymmetric mirror dark matter model where the mirror sector is connected with the visible one by a right handed neutrino portal, is shown to lead naturally to a 3+1 active-sterile neutrino spectrum, if the portal consists only of two right handed neutrinos. At the tree level the model has four massless neutrino states, three active and one sterile. The active neutrinos pick up tiny masses via the minimal radiative inverse seesaw mechanism at the one loop level. The loop effects also generate the large solar and atmospheric mixings, as well as the observed reactor mixing for…
In addition to being a solution to the little hierarchy problem, the Mirror Twin Higgs provides a natural setting for Asymmetric Dark Matter. In its incarnation with only one Higgs doublet and its mirror copy, dark matter would however almost certainly consist mostly of mirror atoms, which is severely ruled out by constraints on dark matter self-interactions. By adding a second Higgs doublet and its mirror, the vevs of the different Higgses can be arranged such that dark matter consists mostly of mirror neutrons, which is cosmologically viable. In this paper, it is shown that current constrain…
We extend the analysis of asymmetric Dark Matter relic density with Sommerfeld enhancement to the case where the mediator is massive. In asymmetric Dark Matter models, the asymmetric Dark Matter is assumed to couple to light scalar or vector boson. Asymmetric Dark Matter annihilation cross section is enhanced by the Sommerfeld effect which exists due to the distortion of wavefunction of asymmetric Dark Matter particle and anti--particle by long--range interactions. The impacts of Sommerfeld enhancement on the relic densities of asymmetric Dark Matter particle and anti--particle are discussed. …
Relic abundance of asymmetric Dark Matter particles in brane world cosmological scenario is investigated in this article. Hubble expansion rate is enhanced in brane world cosmology and it affects the relic abundance of asymmetric Dark Matter particles. We analyze how the relic abundance of asymmetric Dark Matter is changed in this model. We show that in such kind of nonstandard cosmological scenario, indirect detection of asymmetric Dark Matter is possible if the cross section is small enough which let the anti--particle abundance kept in the same amount with the particle. We show the indirect…
Mirror world, a parallel hidden sector with microphysics identical to ordinary particle physics, can have several interesting phenomenological and astrophysical implications and mirror matter can be a natural candidate for dark matter in the universe. If the ordinary and the mirror photons have a kinetic mixing due to the Lagrangian term $(ε/2) F_{μν} F'^{μν}$, then mirror particles effectively acquire the electric charges $\sim ε$ with respect to the ordinary photon, so that they become a sort of particles historically coined as "millicharged" though nowadays they must be called more appropri…
We study the implications of asymmetric dark matter on neutron stars. we construct a "mixed neutron star" model composed of ordinary baryons and of asymmetric dark matter baryons. We derive the general relativistic structure equations for each specie, the equation for the mass within a given radius, and the redshift as function of radius. We present one specific numerical model as an illustrative example. In this example, the mass of the dark neutron equals half that of the ordinary neutron. The main results are: a total mass of $3.74 M_{\odot}$, a total mass within the neutron-sphere equaling…
We investigate the relic abundance of asymmetric Dark Matter particles that were in thermal equilibrium in the early universe. The standard analytic calculation of the symmetric Dark Matter is generalized to the asymmetric case. We calculate the asymmetry required to explain the observed Dark Matter relic abundance as a function of the annihilation cross section. We show that introducing an asymmetry always reduces the indirect detection signal from WIMP annihilation, although it has a larger annihilation cross section than symmetric Dark Matter. This opens new possibilities for the constructi…
Considering the existence of old neutron stars puts strong limits on the dark matter/nucleon cross section for bosonic asymmetric dark matter. Key to these bounds is formation of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of the asymmetric dark matter particles. We consider the effects of the host neutron star's gravitational field on the BEC transition. We find this substantially shifts the transition temperature and so strengthens the bounds on cross section. In particular, for the well-motivated mass range of ~5-15 GeV, we improve previous bounds by an order of magnitude.
We explore a model of two-field inflation with nonminimal kinetic terms in which two identical matter sectors decoupled from each other may reheat to different temperatures while preserving the symmetry of the Lagrangian. This scenario is motivated by mirror dark matter models in which the temperature of the mirror sector is constrained to be $T'\lesssim0.5 T$ by big bang nucleosynthesis and the cosmic microwave background. For a given class of nonminimal kinematic terms, we find that the symmetric field trajectory $X=Y$ is a repeller solution, such that any randomly-occurring asymmetry in the…
We examine cosmological, astrophysical and collider constraints on thermal dark matter (DM) with mass mX in the range 1 MeV to 10 GeV. Cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations, which severely constrain light symmetric DM, can be evaded if the DM relic density is sufficiently asymmetric. CMB constraints require the present anti-DM to DM ratio to be less than 2*10^{-6} (10^{-1}) for DM mass mX = 1 MeV (10 GeV) with ionizing efficiency factor f ~ 1. We determine the minimum annihilation cross section for achieving these asymmetries subject to the relic density constraint; these cross sectio…
The idea that dark matter may be a composite state of a hidden nonabelian gauge sector has received great attention in recent years. Frameworks such as asymmetric dark matter motivate the idea that dark matter may have similar mass to the proton, while mirror matter and $G \times G$ grand unified theories provide rationales for additional gauge sectors which may have minimal interactions with standard model particles. In this work we explore the hadronic spectra that these dark QCD models can allow. The effects of the number of light colored particles and the value of the confinement scale on …
The littlest Higgs model with T-parity (LHT) has new flavor-changing (FC) couplings with the Standard Model (SM) quarks, which do not suffer strong constraints from electroweak precision data. So these FC interactions may enhance the cross sections of some flavor-changing neutral-current (FCNC) processes. In this work, we study the FC top-charm associated productions via $e^{-}γ$ collision at the ILC. We find that the cross sections are sensitive to the mirror quark masses. With reasonable values of the parameters, the cross sections may reach the detectable level and provide useful informatio…
We consider the implications of fermionic asymmetric dark matter for a "mixed neutron star" composed of ordinary baryons and dark fermions. We find examples, where for a certain range of dark fermion mass -- when it is less than that of ordinary baryons -- such systems can reach higher masses than the maximal values allowed for ordinary ("pure") neutron stars. This is shown both within a simplified, heuristic Newtonian analytic framework with non-interacting particles and via a general relativistic numerical calculation, under certain assumptions for the dark matter equation of state. Our work…
We investigate the evolution of the abundance of the asymmetric thermal Dark Matter when its annihilation rate at chemical decoupling is boosted by the Sommerfeld enhancement. We perform the detailed analysis of the effect of $s$-- and $p$--wave Sommerfeld enhanced annihilation cross section on the relic abundances of asymmetric Dark Matter particle and anti--particle both in numerical and analytical way. The constraints on the coupling and asymmetric factor are given by using the observational data of the relic density of Dark Matter.
We show that the relic abundance of the minority component of asymmetric dark matter can be very sensitive to the expansion rate of the Universe and the temperature of transition between a non-standard pre-Big Bang Nucleosynthesis cosmological phase and the standard radiation dominated phase, if chemical decoupling happens before this transition. In particular, because the annihilation cross section of asymmetric dark matter is typically larger than that of symmetric dark matter in the standard cosmology, the decrease in relic density of the minority component in non-standard cosmologies with …
Asymmetric dark matter (ADM) is motivated by the similar cosmological mass densities measured for ordinary and dark matter. We present a comprehensive theory for ADM that addresses the mass density similarity, going beyond the usual ADM explanations of similar number densities. It features an explicit matter-antimatter asymmetry generation mechanism, has one fully worked out thermal history and suggestions for other possibilities, and meets all phenomenological, cosmological and astrophysical constraints. Importantly, it incorporates a deep reason for why the dark matter mass scale is related …
The dark matter content of the Universe is likely to be a mixture of matter and antimatter, perhaps comparable to the measured asymmetric mixture of baryons and antibaryons. During the early stages of the Universe, the dark matter particles are produced in a process similar to baryogenesis, and dark matter freeze-out depends on the dark matter asymmetry and the annihilation cross section (s-wave and p-wave annihilation channels). In these η-parametrised asymmetric dark matter models (η-ADM), the dark matter particles have an annihilation cross section close to the weak interaction cross sectio…
We study a natural implementation of Asymmetric Dark Matter in Twin Higgs models. The mirroring of the Standard Model strong sector suggests that a twin baryon with mass around 5 GeV is a natural Dark Matter candidate once a twin baryon number asymmetry comparable to the SM asymmetry is generated. We explore twin baryon Dark Matter in two different scenarios, one with minimal content in the twin sector and one with a complete copy of the SM, including a light twin photon. The essential requirements for successful thermal history are presented, and in doing so we address some of the cosmologica…
Dark matter that possesses a particle-antiparticle asymmetry and has thermalised in the early universe, requires a larger annihilation cross-section compared to symmetric dark matter, in order to deplete the dark antiparticles and account for the observed dark matter density. The annihilation cross-section determines the residual symmetric component of dark matter, which may give rise to annihilation signals during CMB and inside haloes today. We consider dark matter with long-range interactions, in particular dark matter coupled to a light vector or scalar force mediator. We compute the coupl…
A few remarks on Dark Matter (DM) models are presented. An example is Mirror Matter which is the oldest but still viable DM candidate, perhaps not in the purest form. It can serve as a test-bench for other analogous DM models, since the properties of macroscopic objects are quite firmly fixed for Mirror Matter. A pedagogical derivation of virial theorem is given and it is pointed out that concepts of virial velocity or virial temperature are misleading for some cases. It is shown that the limits on self-interaction cross-sections derived from observations of colliding clusters of galaxies are …
