Selective withdrawal is a desired phenomenon in transferring oil from large caverns in US Strategic petroleum reserve, because entrainment of oil at the time during withdrawal poses a risk of contaminating the environment. In order to predict a critical submergence depth at a critical flow rate, a selective withdrawal experiment at a high Reynolds Number was conducted. A tube was positioned through a liquid-liquid interface that draws the lower liquid upwards. Analysis of the normal stress balance across the interface produced a Weber number, utilizing dynamic pressure scaling, that predicted …
A fiber withdrawn from a bath of a dilute particulate suspension exhibits different coating regimes depending on the physical properties of the fluid, the withdrawal speed, the particle sizes, and the radius of the fiber. Our experiments indicate that only the liquid without particles is entrained for thin coating films. Beyond a threshold capillary number, the fiber is coated by a liquid film with entrained particles. We systematically characterize the role of the capillary number, the particle size, and the fiber radius on the threshold speed for particle entrainment. We discuss the boundary…

In viscous withdrawal, a converging flow imposed in an upper layer of viscous liquid entrains liquid from a lower, stably stratified layer. Using the idea that a thin tendril is entrained by a local straining flow, we propose a scaling law for the volume flux of liquid entrained from miscible liquid layers. A long-wavelength model including only local information about the withdrawal flow is degenerate, with multiple tendril solutions for one withdrawal condition. Including information about the global geometry of the withdrawal flow removes the degeneracy while introducing only a logarithmic …
This paper presents a numerical analysis of the transition from selective withdrawal to viscous entrainment. In our model problem, an interface between two immiscible layers of equal viscosity is deformed by an axisymmetric withdrawal flow, which is driven by a point sink located some distance above the interface in the upper layer. We find that steady-state hump solutions, corresponding to selective withdrawal of liquid from the upper layer, cease to exist above a threshold withdrawal flux, and that this transition corresponds to a saddle-node bifurcation for the hump solutions. Numerical res…
The entrainment of air by advancing contact lines is studied by plunging a solid plate into a very viscous liquid. Above a threshold velocity, we observe the formation of an extended air film, typically 10 microns thick, which subsequently decays into air bubbles. Exploring a large range of viscous liquids, we find an unexpectedly weak dependence of entrainment speed on liquid viscosity, pointing towards a crucial role of the flow inside the air film. This induces a striking asymmetry between wetting and dewetting: while the breakup of the air film strongly resembles the dewetting of a liquid …
We study numerically the hydrodynamics of dip coating from a suspension and report a mechanism for colloidal assembly and pattern formation on smooth and uniform substrates. Below a critical withdrawal speed of the substrate, capillary forces required to deform the meniscus prevent colloidal particles from entering the coating film. Capillary forces are overcome by hydrodynamic drag only after a minimum number of particles organize in a close-packed formation within the meniscus. Once within the film, the formed assembly moves at nearly the withdrawal speed and rapidly separates from the next …

We report on two instabilities called viscous fountain and viscous entrainment triggered at the interface between two liquids by the action of bulk flows driven by a laser beam. These streaming flows are due to light scattering losses in turbid liquids, and can be directed either toward or forward the interface. We experimentally and numerically investigate these interface instabilities and show that the height and curvature of the interface deformation at the threshold and the jet radius after interface destabilization mainly depend on the waist of the laser beam. Analogies and differences be…
We report on the onset of fluid entrainment when a contact line is forced to advance over a dry solid of arbitrary wettability. We show that entrainment occurs at a critical advancing speed beyond which the balance between capillary, viscous and contact line forces sustaining the shape of the interface is no longer satisfied. Wetting couples to the hydrodynamics by setting both the morphology of the interface at small scales and the viscous friction of the front. We find that the critical deformation that the interface can sustain is controlled by the friction at the contact line and the visco…
Current development of micro-scale technologies increases the interest to viscous flows with low and moderate Reynolds numbers. This work theoretically studies the entrainment flow of a viscous jet emerging from a plane wall into a half space. Methods are developed to find physically meaningful similarity solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations with finite values of mass and momentum fluxes and having no characteristic size. Two models are considered: flow dominated by momentum flux and flow dominated by mass flux. A new one-parameter set of momentum-dominated similarity solutions is found. T…
We consider the mixing of a viscous fluid by the rotation of a pitched blade turbine inside an open, cylindrical tank, with air as the lighter fluid above. To examine the flow and interfacial dynamics, we utilise a highly-parallelised implementation of a hybrid front-tracking/level-set method that employs a domain-decomposition parallelisation strategy. Our numerical technique is designed to capture faithfully complex interfacial deformation, and changes of topology, including interface rupture and dispersed phase coalescence. As shown via transient, three-dimensional direct numerical simulati…
