We discuss the development of a sensitive electrometer that utilizes a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in the quantum Hall regime. As a demonstration, we measure the evolution of the Landau levels in a second, nearby 2DEG as the applied perpendicular magnetic field is changed, and extract an effective mass for electrons in GaAs that agrees within experimental error with previous measurements.
Silicene have been proposed to host multiple topological phases depending on the environmental parameters such as gated voltage and proximity induced exchange field. Two typical topological phase are quantum spin Hall phase and quantum anomalous Hall phase. We found that in the presence of antiferromagnetic exchange field and (or) gated voltage, the bilayer silicene host a topological phase that the Chern numbers of the two spin are different in both sign and magnitude, .i.e the anomalous Hall effects of the two spins are imbalanced. The topological phase is generated by triple band inversion …
We present a description of bilayers and quasi-three dimensional stacks of Jain series of fractional quantum Hall states using their parton descriptions, and argue for them as candidate states when the interlayer Coulombic interaction is comparable to the intralayer Coulomb interaction. For the bilayers, a K-matrix theory is presented and shown to be different from decoupled or bonded layers. The quasi-3D systems have gapless gauge excitations and gapped partons that may be able to move about in the 3D, thus presenting a toy model for quantum Hall-like states in three dimensions.
The edge states of the quantum Hall and fractional quantum Hall effect of a two-dimensional electron gas provide key access to the excitations of the bulk. Here we demonstrate controlled transmission of edge states in bilayer graphene. Controlled by an independent gate, the backscattering rate of the edge modes is continuously tuned from 0 to close to 1, with fractional quantized values corresponding to the sequential complete backscattering of individual modes. Our experiments demonstrate the feasibility to controllably manipulate edge states in bilayer graphene, thus opening the door to more…
We investigated spin Hall magnetoresistance in FeMn/Pt bilayers, which was found to be one order of magnitude larger than that of heavy metal and insulating ferromagnet or antiferromagnet bilayer systems, and comparable to that of NiFe/Pt bilayers. The spin Hall magnetoresistance shows a non-monotonic dependence on the thicknesses of both FeMn and Pt. The former can be accounted for by the thickness dependence of net magnetization in FeMn thin films, whereas the latter is mainly due to spin accumulation and diffusion in Pt. Through analysis of the Pt thickness dependence, the spin Hall angle, …
Nonlinear anomalous Hall effect is the Berry curvature dipole induced second-order Hall voltage or temperature difference in response to a longitudinal electric field or temperature gradient. These are the prominent Hall responses in time reversal symmetric systems. Here, we investigate the family of second-order nonlinear anomalous Hall effects, the electrical, thermoelectric and thermal nonlinear Hall effects in the moiré system of twisted double bilayer graphene. We demonstrate that the nonlinear anomalous Hall signals can be used to probe the topological phase-transitions in moiré systems,…
It has been recently shown that monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) in the 2H structural phase exhibit relatively large orbital Hall conductivity plateaus within their energy band gaps, where their spin Hall conductivities vanish. However, since the valley Hall effect (VHE) in these systems also generates a transverse flow of orbital angular momentum it becomes experimentally challenging to distinguish between the two effects in these materials. The VHE requires inversion symmetry breaking to occur, which takes place in the TMD monolayers, but not in the bilayers. We show tha…
The quantum Hall system can be used to study many-body physics owing to its multiple internal electronic degrees of freedom and tunability. While quantum phase transitions have been studied intensively, research on the temperature-induced phase transitions of this system is limited. We measured the pure bulk conductivity of a quantum Hall antiferromagnetic state in bilayer graphene over a wide range of temperatures and revealed the two-step phase transition associated with the breaking of the long-range order and short-range antiferromagnetic order. Our findings are fundamental to understandin…
We study the temperature dependence of spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) in antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI)/metal bilayer systems. We calculate the amplitude of the SMR signal by using a quantum Monte Carlo simulation and examine how the SMR depends on the amplitude of the spin, thickness of the AFI layer, and randomness of the exchange interactions. Our results for simple quantum spin models provide a useful starting point for understanding SMR measurements on atomic layers of magnetic compounds.
The ground states of electrons in two vertically coupled quantum dots in the presence of an external magnetic field have been studied within the density functional theory. A phase diagram of the transition to the quantum Hall state in double quantum dots has been plotted for the Landau level filling factor $ν= 1$. It has been shown that the quantum Hall state can be stable for a zero tunnel splitting. The influence of the impurity potential on the stability condition for the quantum Hall state has been analyzed.
We quantify the relative weight of inverse spin Hall and spin rectification effects occurring in RF-sputtered polycrystalline permalloy, molecular beam epitaxy-grown epitaxial iron and liquid phase epitaxy-grown yttrium-iron-garnet bilayer systems with different capping materials. To distinguish the spin rectification signal from the inverse spin Hall voltage the external magnetic field is rotated in-plane to take advantage of the different angular dependencies of the prevailing effects. We prove that in permalloy anisotropic magnetoresistance is the dominant source for spin rectification whil…
Evidence of orbital Hall current induced correlation in second harmonic response of longitudinal and transverse voltage in light metal-ferromagnet bilayers
The chirality of electronic Bloch bands is responsible for many intriguing properties of layered two-dimensional materials. We show that in bilayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), unlike in few-layer graphene and monolayer TMDCs, both intra-layer and inter-layer couplings give important contributions to the Berry-curvature in the $K$ and $-K$ valleys of the Brillouin zone. The inter-layer contribution leads to the stacking dependence of the Berry curvature and we point out the differences between the commonly available 3R type and 2H type bilayers. Due to the inter-layer contribu…
Spin-orbit torques in bilayers of ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic materials hold promise for energy efficient switching of magnetization in nonvolatile magnetic memories. Previously studied spin Hall and Rashba torques originate from spin-orbit interactions within the nonmagnetic material and at the bilayer interface, respectively. Here we report a spin-orbit torque that arises from planar Hall current in the ferromagnetic material of the bilayer and acts as either positive or negative magnetic damping. This planar Hall torque exhibits unusual biaxial symmetry in the plane defined by the applied…
We study the quantum nonlinear planar Hall effect in bilayer graphene under a steady in-plane magnetic field. When time-reversal symmetry is broken by the magnetic field, a charge current occurs in the second-order response to an external electric field, as a result of the Berry curvature dipole in momentum space. We have shown that a nonlinear planar Hall effect originating from the anomalous velocity is deduced by an orbital effect of an in-plane magnetic field on electrons in bilayer graphene in the complete absence of spin-orbit coupling. Taking into account the symmetry analysis, we deriv…
Via the application of parallel magnetic field, we induce a single-layer to bilayer transition in two-dimensional electron systems confined to wide GaAs quantum wells, and study the geometric resonance of composite fermions (CFs) with a periodic density modulation in our samples. The measurements reveal that CFs exist close to bilayer quantum Hall states, formed at Landau level filling factors $ν=1$ and 1/2. Near $ν=1$, the geometric resonance features are consistent with half the total electron density in the bilayer system, implying that CFs prefer to stay in separate layers and exhibit a tw…
The $ν= 0$ quantum Hall state of bilayer graphene is a fertile playground to realize many-body ground states with various broken symmetries. Here we report the experimental observations of a previously unreported metallic phase. The metallic phase resides in the phase space between the previously identified layer polarized state at large transverse electric field and the canted antiferromagnetic state at small transverse electric field. We also report temperature dependence studies of the quantum spin Hall state of $ν= 0$. Complex nonmonotonic behavior reveals concomitant bulk and edge conduct…
