We prove dynamic inequalities of majorisation type for functions on time scales. The results are obtained using the notion of Riemann-Stieltjes delta integral and give a generalization of [App. Math. Let. 22 (2009), no. 3, 416--421] to time scales.
In this paper, motivated by physical considerations, we introduce the notion of modified Riemann sums of Riemann-Stieltjes integrable functions, show that they converge, and compute them explicitely under various assumptions.
In this work, Lp-error estimates of general two and three point quadrature rules for Riemann-Stieltjes integrals are give n. The presented proofs depend on new triangle type inequalities of Riemann-Stieltjes integrals
We study the existence of Riemann-Stieltjes integrals of bounded functions against a given integrator. We are also concerned with the possibility of computing the resulting integrals by means of related Riemann integrals. In particular, we present a new generalization to the well-known formula for continuous integrands and continuously differentiable integrators.
We consider general formulations of the change of variable formula for the Riemann-Stieltjes integral, including the case when the substitution is not invertible.
We study the question, whether a Riemann-Stieltjes integral of a positive continuous function with respect to a non-negative function of bounded variation is positive.
We study the process of integration on time scales in the sense of Riemann-Stieltjes. Analogues of the classical properties are proved for a generic time scale, and examples are given.
In this paper, we investigate the existence of positive solutions for a nonlocal fractional boundary value problem involving Caputo fractional derivative and nonlocal Riemann-Stieltjes integral boundary condition. By using the spectral analysis of the relevant linear operator and Gelfand's formula, we obtain an useful upper and lower bounds for the spectral radius. Our discussion is based on the properties of the Green's function and the fixed point index theory in cones.
In this paper, new sharp weighted generalizations of Ostrowski and generalized trapezoid type inequalities for the Riemann--Stieltjes integrals are proved. Several related inequalities are deduced and investigated. New Simpson's type inequalities for $\mathcal{RS}$--integral are pointed out. Finally, as application; an error estimation of a general quadrature rule for $\mathcal{RS}$--integral via Ostrowski--generalized trapezoid quadrature formula is given.
In order to approximate the Riemann--Stieltjes integral $\int_a^b {f\left( t \right)dg\left( t \right)}$ by $2$--point Gaussian quadrature rule, we introduce the quadrature rule \begin{align*} \int_{ - 1}^1 {f\left( t \right)dg\left( t \right)} \approx A f\left( { - \frac{\sqrt 3 }{3}} \right) + B f\left( {\frac{\sqrt 3 }{3}} \right), \end{align*} for suitable choice of $A$ and $B$. Error estimates for this approximation under various assumptions for the functions involved are provided as well.
In this work, we construct a new general two-point quadratre rules for the Riemann--Stieltjes integral $\int_a^b {f\left( t \right)du\left( t \right)}$, where the integrand $f$ is assumed to be satisfied with the Hölder condition on $[a,b]$ and the integrator $u$ is of bounded variation on $[a,b]$. The dual formulas under the same assumption are proved. Some sharp error $L^p$--Error estimates for the proposed quadrature rules are also obtained.
The concept of Riemann-Stieltjes integral $\int_a^b {f\left( t \right)du\left( t \right)}$; where $f$ is called the integrand, $u$ is called the integrator, plays an important role in Mathematics. The approximation problem of the Riemann-Stieltjes integral $\int_a^b {f\left( t \right)du\left( t \right)}$ in terms of the Riemann-Stieltjes sums have been considered recently by many authors. However, a small attention and a few works have been considered for mappings of two variables; i.e., The approximation problem of the Riemann-Stieltjes double integral $\int_a^b {\int_c^d {f\left( {t,s} \righ…
In 1986 J. Nuttall published in Constructive Approximation the paper "Asymptotics of generalized Jacobi polynomials", where with his usual insight he studied the behavior of the denominators ("generalized Jacobi polynomials") and the remainders of the Pade approximants to a special class of algebraic functions with 3 branch points. 25 years later we try to look at this problem from a modern perspective. On one hand, the generalized Jacobi polynomials constitute an instance of the so-called Heine-Stieltjes polynomials, i.e. they are solutions of linear ODE with polynomial coefficients. On the o…
In the theories of Lebesgue integration and of ordinary differential equations, the Lebesgue Dominated Convergence Theorem provides one of the most widely used tools. Available analogy in the Riemann or Riemann-Stieltjes integration is the Bounded Convergence Theorem, sometimes called also the Arzela or Arzela-Osgood or Osgood Theorem. In the setting of the Kurzweil-Stieltjes integral for real valued functions its proof can be obtained by a slight modification of the proof given for the Young-Stieltjes integral by Hildebrandt in his monograph from 1963. However, it is clear that the proof by H…
The Stieltjes constants $γ_n$ appear in the coefficients in the Laurent expansion of the Riemann zeta function $ζ(s)$ about the simple pole $s=1$. We present an asymptotic expansion for $γ_n$ as $n\rightarrow \infty$ based on the approach described by Knessel and Coffey [Math. Comput. {\bf 80} (2011) 379--386]. A truncated form of this expansion with explicit coefficients is also given. Numerical results are presented that illustrate the accuracy achievable with our expansion.
We show that the higher derivatives of the Riemann zeta function may be expressed in terms of integrals involving the digamma function. Related integrals for the Stieltjes constants are also shown. We also present a formula for the derivatives of the Riemann zeta function entirely in terms of the Lehmer constants.
In this paper we prove pointwise and distributional Fourier transform inversion theorems for functions on the real line that are locally of bounded variation, while in a neighbourhood of infinity are Lebesgue integrable or have polynomial growth. We also allow the Fourier transform to exist in the principal value sense. A function is called regulated if it has a left limit and a right limit at each point. The main inversion theorem is obtained by solving the differential equation $df(t)-iωf(t)=g(t)$ for a regulated function $f$, where $ω$ is a complex number with positive imaginary part. This …
The proportion of false null hypotheses is a very important quantity in statistical modelling and inference based on the two-component mixture model and its extensions, and in control and estimation of the false discovery rate and false non-discovery rate. Most existing estimators of this proportion threshold p-values, deconvolve the mixture model under constraints on its components, or depend heavily on the location-shift property of distributions. Hence, they usually are not consistent, applicable to non-location-shift distributions, or applicable to discrete statistics or p-values. To elimi…
Dating back to Euler, in classical analysis and number theory, the Hurwitz zeta function $$ ζ(z,q)=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\frac{1}{(n+q)^{z}}, $$ the Riemann zeta function $ζ(z)$, the generalized Stieltjes constants $γ_k(q)$, the Euler constant $γ$, Euler's gamma function $Γ(q)$ and the digamma function $ψ(q)$ have many close connections on their definitions and properties. There are also many integrals, series or infinite product representations of them along the history. In this note, we try to provide a parallel story for the alternating Hurwitz zeta function (also known as the Hurwitz-type Eul…
In the standard theory of delay equations, the fundamental solution does not 'live' in the state space. To eliminate this age-old anomaly, we enlarge the state space. As a consequence, we lose the strong continuity of the solution operators and this, in turn, has as a consequence that the Riemann integral no longer suffices for giving meaning to the variation-of-constants formula. To compensate, we develop the Stieltjes-Pettis integral in the setting of a norming dual pair of spaces. Part I provides general theory, Part II deals with "retarded" equations, and in Part III we show how the Stielt…
In this paper we present some new results regarding the solvability of nonlinear Hammerstein integral equations in a special cone of continuous functions. The proofs are based on a certain fixed point theorem of Leggett and Williams type. We give an application of the abstract result to prove the existence of nontrivial solutions of a periodic boundary value problem. We also investigate, via a version of Krasnosel{\cprime}slki{\uı}'s theorem for the sum of two operators, the solvability of perturbed Hammerstein integral equations in the space of continuous functions of bounded variation in the…
In this paper we find fractional Riemann-Liouville derivatives for the Takagi-Landsberg functions. Moreover, we introduce their generalizations called weighted Takagi-Landsberg functions which have arbitrary bounded coefficients in the expansion under Schauder basis. The class of the weighted Takagi- Landsberg functions of order $H>0$ on $[0,1]$ coincides with the $H$-Hölder continuous functions on $[0,1]$. Based on computed fractional integrals and derivatives of the Haar and Schauder functions, we get a new series representation of the fractional derivatives of a Hölder continuous function. …
Given $K$ arbitrary poles, which are neither necessarily distinct nor bounded, on the extended real line, a corresponding ordered base of rational functions orthogonal with respect to varying exponential weights is constructed: this gives rise to a $K$-fold family of orthogonal rational functions (ORFs). The ORF problem is characterised as a family of $K$ matrix Riemann-Hilbert problems (RHPs) on the extended real line, and a corresponding family of $K$ energy minimisation (variational) problems containing external fields with singular points is formulated, and the existence, uniqueness, and r…
Ralph Henstock (1923 - 2007) worked in non-absolute integration, including the Riemann-complete or gauge integral which, independently, Jaroslav Kurzweil also discovered in the 1950's. As a Cambridge undergraduate Henstock took a course of lectures, by J.C. Burkill, on the integration of interval functions. Later, under the supervision of Paul Dienes in Birkbeck College, London, he undertook research into the ideas of Burkill (interval function integrands) and Dienes (Stieltjes integrands); and he presented this thesis in December 1948. The thesis contains the germ of Henstock's later work, in…
