We use 1 kpc resolution cosmological AMR simulations of a Virgo-like galaxy cluster to investigate the effect of feedback from supermassive black holes (SMBH) on the mass distribution of dark matter, gas and stars. We compared three different models: (i) a standard galaxy formation model featuring gas cooling, star formation and supernovae feedback, (ii) a "quenching" model for which star formation is artificially suppressed in massive halos and finally (iii) the recently proposed AGN feedback model of Booth & Schaye (2009). Without AGN feedback (even in the quenching case), our simulated cluster suffers from a strong overcooling problem, with a stellar mass fraction significantly above observed values in M87. The baryon distribution is highly concentrated, resulting in a strong adiabatic contraction (AC) of dark matter. With AGN feedback, on the contrary, the stellar mass in the bright central galaxy (BCG) lies below observational estimates and the overcooling problem disappears. The stellar mass of the BCG is seen to increase with increasing mass resolution, suggesting that our stellar masses converges to the correct value from below. The gas and total mass distributions are in striking agreement with observations. We also find a slight deficit (~10%) of baryons at the virial radius, due to the effect of AGN-driven shock waves pushing gas to Mpc scales and beyond. This baryon deficit results in a slight adiabatic expansion of the dark matter distribution, that can be explained quantitatively by AC theory.
We investigate the effects of AGN feedback on the colour evolution of galaxies found in local (z<0.2) groups and clusters. Galaxies located within the lobes of powerful Fanaroff-Riley type II (edge-brightened) sources show much redder colours than neighbouring galaxies that are not spatially coincident with the radio source. By contrast, no similar effect is seen near Fanaroff-Riley type I (core-dominated) radio sources. We show that these colours are consistent with FR-IIs truncating star formation as the expanding bow shock overruns a galaxy. We examine a sample of clusters with no detectabl…
AGN feedback is regarded as an important non-gravitational process in galaxy clusters, providing useful constraints on large-scale structure formation. It modifies the structure and energetics of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) and hence its understanding is crucially needed in order to use clusters as high precision cosmological probes. In this context, particularly keeping in mind the upcoming high quality radio data expected from radio surveys like SKA with its higher sensitivity, high spatial and spectral resolutions, we review our current understanding of AGN feedback, its cosmological imp…
Relativistic jets from AGN have a wide range of impacts on galaxy groups and clusters and are key for understanding their formation and physical properties. However, this non-gravitational process is not well understood. Galaxy groups with shallow gravitational potentials are ideal laboratories to study and constrain the AGN feedback model. We studied hot gas in ~66,000 SDSS LRG halos with an average halo mass of 3 x 10^13 Msun using the Planck tSZ map. We have detected their average tSZ radial profile at ~17 sigma and compared it with the cosmo-OWLS cosmological hydrodynamical simulations wit…
AGN feedback in galaxy groups: a joint GMRT/X-ray study
The Lyman-$α$ forest is a powerful probe for cosmology, but it is also strongly impacted by galaxy evolution and baryonic processes such as Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) feedback, which can redistribute mass and energy on large scales. We constrain the signatures of AGN feedback on the 1D power spectrum of the Lyman-$α$ forest using a series of eight hydro-cosmological simulations performed with the Adaptative Mesh Refinement code RAMSES. This series starts from the Horizon-AGN simulation and varies the sub-grid parameters for AGN feeding, feedback and stochasticity. These simulations cover the…

Recent observations of giant ellipticals and brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) provide tentative evidence for a correlation between the luminosity of the H$α$ emitting gas filaments and the strength of feedback associated with the active galactic nucleus (AGN). Motivated by this, we use 3D radiation-hydrodynamic simulations with the code Enzo to examine and quantify the relationship between the observable properties of the H$α$ filaments and the kinetic and radiative feedback from supermassive black holes in BCGs. We find that the spatial extent and total mass of the filaments show positive co…
Active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback models are generally calibrated to reproduce galaxy observables such as the stellar mass function and the bimodality in galaxy colors. We use variations of the AGN feedback implementations in the IllustrisTNG (TNG) and Simba cosmological hydrodynamic simulations to show that the low redshift Lyman-$α$ forest can provide constraints on the impact of AGN feedback. We show that TNG over-predicts the number density of absorbers at column densities $N_{\rm HI} < 10^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ compared to data from the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (in agreement with previous…
We study the interaction of feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) and a multi-phase interstellar medium (ISM), in simulations including explicit stellar feedback, multi-phase cooling, accretion-disk winds, and Compton heating. We examine radii ~0.1-100 pc around a black hole (BH), where the accretion rate onto the BH is determined and where AGN-powered winds and radiation couple to the ISM. We conclude: (1) The BH accretion rate is determined by exchange of angular momentum between gas and stars in gravitational instabilities. This produces accretion rates ~0.03-1 Msun/yr, sufficient to p…
We study the effect of Active Nuclei Galaxy (AGN) feedback as one of the major mechanisms modifying the cluster morphology influencing scaling relations, which are the most uncertain factor in constraining cosmology with clusters of galaxies. Using cosmological hydrodynamical simulations we investigate how the AGN feedback changes the X-ray morphology of the simulated systems, and compare to the observed REXCESS (Representative XMM-Newton Cluster Structure Survey) clusters. We apply centre shifts and power ratios to characterise the cluster morphology, and find that our simulated clusters are …

We study the sensitivity of the $z=0.1$ Lyman-$α$ Forest observables, such as the column density distribution function (CDD), flux PDF, flux power spectrum, and line width distribution, to sub-grid models of active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback using the Illustris and IllustrisTNG (TNG) cosmological simulations. The two simulations share an identical Ultraviolet Background (UVB) prescription and similar cosmological parameters, but TNG features an entirely reworked AGN feedback model. Due to changes in the AGN radio mode model, the original Illustris simulations have a factor of 2-3 fewer Lym…
We present simulations of galaxy formation, based on the GADGET-3 code, in which a sub-resolution model for star formation and stellar feedback is interfaced with a new model for AGN feedback. Our sub-resolution model describes a multiphase ISM, accounting for hot and cold gas within the same resolution element: we exploit this feature to investigate the impact of coupling AGN feedback energy to the different phases of the ISM over cosmic time. Our fiducial model considers that AGN feedback energy coupling is driven by the covering factors of the hot and cold phases. We perform a suite of cosm…
In this study we quantify the properties of the gas and dark matter around active galactic nuclei (AGN) in simulated galaxy groups and clusters and analyze the effect of AGN feedback on the surrounding intra-cluster (group) medium. Our results suggest downsizing of AGN luminosity with host halo mass, supporting the results obtained from clustering studies of AGN. By examining the temperature and density distribution of the gas in the vicinity of AGN we show that due to feedback from the central engine, the gas gets displaced from the centre of the group/cluster resulting in a reduction of the …
In the current picture of cosmology and astrophysics, the formation and evolution of galaxies is closely linked to that of their dark matter haloes. The best representation of this galaxy-dark matter halo co-evolution is the M* - Mhalo relation. In this study we investigate how the radio-mode feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) affects the M* - Mhalo relation at redshifts 0.08 < z < 1.53. We use a set of 111 radio-selected AGN at 3 GHz VLA-COSMOS within the X-ray galaxy groups in the COSMOS field. We compare these results to the ones of 171 star-forming galaxies (SFGs), using the theore…
The intrinsic correlations of galaxy shapes and orientations across the large-scale structure of the Universe are a known contaminant to weak gravitational lensing. They are known to be dependent on galaxy properties, such as their mass and morphologies. The complex interplay between alignments and the physical processes that drive galaxy evolution remains vastly unexplored. We assess the sensitivity of intrinsic alignments (shapes and angular momenta) to Active Galactic Nuclei -AGN- feedback by comparing galaxy alignment in twin runs of the cosmological hydrodynamical Horizon simulation, whic…
A recent determination of the relationships between the X-ray luminosity of the ISM (Lx) and the stellar and total mass, for a sample of nearby early-type galaxies (ETGs), is used to investigate the origin of the hot gas, via a comparison with the results of hydrodynamical simulations of the ISM evolution for a large set of isolated ETGs. After the epoch of major galaxy formation (after z~2), the ISM is replenished by stellar mass losses and SN ejecta, at the rate predicted by stellar evolution, and is depleted by star formation; it is heated by the thermalization of stellar motions, SNe explo…
