We study the rapidity spectra in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions in the framework of the Landau hydrodynamical model. We find that thermal smearing effects improve the agreement with experimental results on pion rapidity spectra. We describe a simple model of the hadronization and discuss its consequences regarding the pion multiplicity and the increasing entropy condition.
The fast simultaneous hadronization and chemical freeze out of supercooled quark-gluon plasma, created in relativistic heavy ion collisions, leads to the re-heating of the expanding matter and to the change in a collective flow profile. We use the assumption of statistical nature of the hadronization process, and study quantitatively the freeze out in the framework of hydrodynamical Bjorken model with different quark-gluon plasma equations of state.
Recent data on hadron multiplicities in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV/c at mid-rapidity are analyzed within the concept of chemical freeze-out. A non-uniformity of the baryon chemical potential along the beam axis is taken into account. An approximate analytical solution of the hydrodynamic equations for a chemically frozen Boltzmann-like gas is found. The Cauchy conditions for hydrodynamic evolution of the hadron resonance gas are fixed at the thermal freeze-out hypersurface from analysis of one-particle momentum spectra and HBT correlations. The proper time of chemical freeze-out and …
The rapidity densities in Au-Au collisions at center-of-mass energies 200 and 130 A GeV measured at Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider by STAR and PHENIX collaborations are analyzed within the statistical hadronization model at chemical freeze-out. We find that the model can describe the experimental rapidity densities well. The corresponding chemical freeze-out parameters are determined and they are seen to be in agreement with what we expect from our previous analyzes at lower beam energies at AGS and SPS.
We study the effects of strict conservation laws and the problem of negative contributions to final momentum distribution during the freeze out through 3-dimensional hypersurfaces with space-like normal. We study some suggested solutions for this problem, and demonstrate it on one example.
We present an analysis of hadronic multiplicities measured in Pb-Pb collisions at \sqrt s_{NN} = 2.76 TeV as a function of the collision centrality within the statistical hadronization model. Evidence is found of a dependence of the chemical freeze-out temperature as a function of centrality, with a slow rise from central to peripheral collisions, which we interpret as an effect of post-hadronization inelastic scatterings. Using correction factors calculated by means of a simulation based on the UrQMD model, we are able to obtain a significant improvement in the statitical model fit quality an…
We analyze hadrochemical freeze-out in central Pb+Pb collisions at CERN SPS energies, employing the hybrid version of the Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics model, which describes the transition from a hydrodynamic stage to hadrons by the Cooper-Frye mechanism, and matches to a final hadron-resonance cascade. We fit the results both before and after the cascade stage using the Statistical Model, to assess the effect of the cascade phase. We observe a strong effect on antibaryon yields except anti-Omega, resulting in a shift in T and mu_B of the freeze-out curve. We discuss indication…
Freeze-out of particles across 3-dimensional space-time hypersurface with space-like normal is discussed in a simple kinetic model. The final momentum distribution of emitted particles shows a non-exponential transverse momentum spectrum, which is in quantitative agreement with recently measured SPS pion and $h^-$ spectra.
We analyze the hadronic freeze-out in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC in a transport approach which combines hydrodynamics for the early, dense, deconfined stage of the reaction with a microscopic non-equilibrium model for the later hadronic stage at which the hydrodynamic equilibrium assumptions are not valid. With this ansatz we are able to self-consistently calculate the freeze-out of the system and determine space-time hypersurfaces for individual hadron species. The space-time domains of the freeze-out for several hadron species are found to be actually four-dimensional, a…
This dissertation examines the phenomenology of statistical hadronization at ultrarelativistic energies. We start with an overview of current experimental and theoretical issues in Relativistic heavy ion physics. We then introduce statistical hadronization, and show how it gives a description of particle abundances and spectra through covariance and entropy maximization. We argue that a distinction can be made between equilibrated staged freeze-out in which post-formation hadron interactions play an important role in determining final-state observables, and non-equilibrium sudden freeze-out wh…
This survey offers an introductory tutorial for students of any age of the currently thriving field of hadrochemistry. We discuss the different chemical potentials, how the hadronic phase space is described and how one evaluates the abundance of hadrons at time of hadronization. We show that a rather accurate description of experimental data arises and we present results of fits to hadron yields at SPS and RHIC. We show that introduction of chemical non-equilibrium originating in a sudden hadronization of a QGP is favored strongly at SPS and is presently also emerging at RHIC. The low chemical…
Dynamics of relativistic heavy-ion collisions is investigated on the basis of a simple (1+1)-dimensional hydrodynamical model in light-cone coordinates. The main emphasis is put on studying sensitivity of the dynamics and observables to the equation of state and initial conditions. Low sensitivity of pion rapidity spectra to the presence of the phase transition is demonstrated, and some inconsistencies of the equilibrium scenario are pointed out. Possible non-equilibrium effects are discussed, in particular, a possibility of an explosive disintegration of the deconfined phase into quark-gluon …
We analyze hadrochemical freeze-out in central Pb+Pb collisions at CERN SPS and LHC energies. Employing the UrQMD hybrid transport model we study the effects of the final hadron/resonance expansion phase on the hadron multiplicities established at hadronization. The bulk meson yields freeze out directly at hadronization whereas the baryon-antibaryon sector is subject to significant alterations, due to annihilation and regeneration processes. We quantify the latter changes by survival factors for each species which are applied to modify the statistical model predictions for the data. The modifi…
We show that a hydrodynamical model with continuous particle emission instead of sudden freeze out can explain both the strange particle abundances and pion abundance from NA35 without extra assumption (e.g., sequential freeze out, modified equation of state, sudden plasma hadronization,...). In this scenario, the observation of a larger pion abundance is natural and does not imply a higher initial entropy and early plasma phase.
The widths of charge balance function in high energy hadron-hadron and relativistic heavy ion collisions are studied using the Monte Carlo generators PYTHIA and AMPT, respectively. The narrowing of balance function as the increase of multiplicity is found in both cases. The mean parton-freeze-out time of a heavy-ion-collision event is used as the characteristic hadronization time of the event. It turns out that for a fixed multiplicity interval the width of balance function is consistent with being independent of hadronization time.
We study to what extent a measurement of the $m_\bot$ spectra for hadrons and their resonances can resolve ambiguities in statistical model description of particle production. We describe in quantitative analysis how physical assumptions about the freeze-out geometry and dynamics influence the particle spectra. Considering ratios of $m_\bot$ distribution of resonance-particle ratios (such as $K^*/K$, $Σ^*/Λ, η'/η$) we observe significant sensitivity to fireball freeze-out geometry and flow dynamics.
We discuss the information that can be obtained from an analysis of fluctuations in heavy ion collisions within the context of the statistical model of particle production. We then examine the recently published experimental data on ratio fluctuations, and use it to obtain constraints on the statistical properties (physically relevant ensemble, degree of chemical equilibration, scaling across energies and system sizes) and freeze-out dynamics (amount of reinteraction between chemical and thermal freeze-out) of the system.
We analyze hadro-chemical freeze-out in central Pb+Pb collisions at CERN SPS energies, employing the hybrid version of UrQMD which models hadronization by the Cooper-Frye mechanism, and matches to a final hadron-resonance cascade. We fit the results both before and after the cascade stage using the Statistical Hadronization Model, to assess the effect of the cascade phase. We observe a strong effect on antibaryon yields except anti-Ω, resulting in a shift in T and μ_B. We discuss the implications for the freeze-out curve.
The scaling properties of elliptic flow of hadrons produced in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions are investigated at low transverse momenta, $p_T\lsim 2$\,GeV. Utilizing empirical parameterizations of a thermalized fireball with collective-flow fields, Resonance Recombination Model (RRM) is employed to describe hadronization via quark coalescence at the hadronization transition. We reconfirm that RRM converts equilibrium quark distribution functions into equilibrated hadron spectra including the effects of space-momentum correlations on elliptic flow. This provides the basis for a control…
From an analysis of various types of data obtained in relativistic nuclear collisions, the following picture has emerged in thermal and hydrodynamical descriptions: as the fluid expands and cools, particles first undergo a chemical freeze out at T_ch.~160-200 MeV then a thermal freeze out at T_th~100-140 MeV. In this paper we show how to incorporate these separate freeze outs consistently in a hydrodynamical code via a modified equation of state (general case) or via a modified Cooper-Frye formula (particular case of T_ch. close to T_th. or few particle species undergoing early chemical freeze…
The statistical hadronization model is a simple and efficient phenomenological framework in which the relative yields for very high energy heavy ion collisions are essentially determined by a single model parameter---the chemical freeze-out temperature. Recent measurements of yields of hadrons and light nuclei covering over 9 orders of magnitudes from the ALICE collaboration at the LHC were described by the model with remarkable accuracy with a chemical freeze-out temperature of 156.5 $\pm$ 1.5 MeV. A key physical question is whether the freeze-out temperature can be understood, literally, as …
I review how hydrodynamical flow is related to the observed flow in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions and how initial conditions, equation of state and freeze-out temperature affect flow in hydrodynamical models.
In the discussion of hadronization at or close to the freeze-out curve statistical (hadron resonance gas) models play an important role. In particular, in the charmonium sector, regeneration models are considered which rely on the fact that charmonium states can form again already at temperatures well above the QCD transition or hadronization temperature. An important ingredient in these considerations is the regeneration or hadronization of open charm states. In this talk we report on a lattice QCD analysis of correlations of open strange and charm with other conserved quantum numbers like th…
In hydrodynamical modeling of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, the freeze-out is typically assumed to take place at a surface of constant temperature or energy density. A more physical approach is to assume that freeze-out takes place at a surface of constant Knudsen number. We evaluate the Knudsen number as a ratio of the expansion rate of the system to the pion scattering rate, and apply the constant Knudsen number freeze-out criterion to ideal hydrodynamical description of heavy-ion collisions at RHIC ($\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=200$ GeV) and the LHC ($\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=2760$ GeV) ener…
We investigate the effect of chemical freeze-out on identified particle spectra at 200AGeV Au-Au Collisions at RHIC, by utilizing a full three-dimensional hydrodynamical calculation. The hydrodynamical code SPheRIO we employed is based on the smoothed particle hydrodynamic algorithm. In order to describe the spectra of strange hadrons, the code has been further improved by explicitly incorporating the strangeness conservation and a chemical freeze-out mechanism. In our model, strange hadrons such as Lambda, Xi, Omega and phi undergo the chemical freeze-out immediately after the hadronization, …
We consider the chemical freeze-out of $Ξ$, $\overlineΞ$ and $ϕ$ multistrange hadrons within a Statistical Hadronization Model inspired approach. We study particle yields across a wide range of reaction energy and centrality from NA49 at SPS and STAR at RHIC experiments. We constrain the physical conditions present in the fireball source of strange hadrons, and anticipate results expected at LHC.
A brief introduction to the statistical hadronization approach to particle production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is given. In the context of fluid dynamics modeling various aspects of hadron emission at the freeze-out are discussed. Practical applications of the presented concepts are presented within the THERMINATOR Monte-Carlo hadron generator.
Three possible scenarios of the statistical hadronization model are reexamined with the use of the $p_{T}$ spectra of the PHENIX and very low $p_{T}$ PHOBOS measurements at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV. These scenarios are: (\textit{a}) full chemical non-equilibrium, (\textit{b}) strangeness chemical non-equilibrium and (\textit{c}) chemical equilibrium. Fits to the spectra are done within the Cracow single-freeze-out model, which takes into account both the expansion and resonance decays. Predictions for spectra of $ϕ$, $K(892)^{\ast 0}$ and $π^{0}$ are also given. The global variables like the tr…
A popular derivation of the apparent temperature of the particle transverse momentum spectra and its inconsistency are considered. An improved formula for the apparent temperature is discussed. It is shown that recent results on transverse mass spectra of $J/ψ$ and $ψ^{\prime}$ mesons support a hypothesis of statistical production of charmonia at hadronization and suggest the early thermal freeze-out of these mesons. Using the apparent temperature formula the collective transverse velocity of the hadronizing quark gluon plasma is extracted to be $<v_T > \approx 0.2$. Predictions for transverse…
Most hydrodynamical calculations used in heavy-ion physics ignore the effect of freeze-out matter carrying energy and momentum away from the expanding fluid. In a simple one-dimensional model we compare calculated energy density and velocity profiles, with and without interaction between fluid-like and freeze-out parts of the system, in order to estimate the importance of this effect.
We investigate hadronic species freeze-out systematics in A+A collisions at low SPS energies, corresponding to a baryochemical potential above 300 MeV, analyzing NA49 hadron production data in the framework of the statistical hadronization model, and in the UrQMD hadronic transport model. Observing no deviation from universal grand canonical hadro-chemical equilibrium freeze-out, we argue that the observed hadronic freeze-out points should universally signal the boundary line of the hadronic phase in the QCD matter phase diagram.
We study the effect of separate chemical and kinetic freeze-outs to the ideal hydrodynamical flow in Au+Au collisions at RHIC (sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV energy). Unlike in earlier studies we explore how these effects can be counteracted by changes in the initial state of the hydrodynamical evolution. We conclude that the reproduction of pion, proton and antiproton yields necessitates a chemical freeze-out temperature of T = 150 MeV instead of T = 160 - 170 MeV motivated by thermal models. Unlike previously reported, this lower temperature makes it possible to reproduce the p_T-spectra of hadrons if…
Ideally, the Statistical Hadronization Model (SHM) freeze-out curve should reveal the QCD parton-hadron phase transformation line in the ($T$,$μ_B$) plane. We discuss the effects of various final state interaction phenomena, like baryon-antibaryon annihilation, core-corona effects or QCD critical point formation, which shift or deform the SHM freezeout curve. In particular, we present a method to remove the annihilation effects by quantifying them with the microscopic hadron transport model UrQMD. We further discuss the new aspects of hadronization that could be associated with the relatively …
The recombination model as a model for hadronization from a quark-gluon plasma has been recently revived since it has advantages in explaining several important features of the final state produced in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC, such as the constituent quark number scaling of the elliptic coefficient versus the transverse energy of identified hadrons, the bending shape of the $p_T$ spectrum of hadrons near 5 GeV/c, and the measured large value of baryon to meson ratio(of the order of unity) in the same $p_T$ range. We have developed a dynamic simulation model of heavy-ion collisions in which…
We consider a physical scenario for ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions where, at the early stage, only transverse degrees of freedom of partons are thermalized, while the longitudinal motion is described by free streaming. When the energy density of the partonic system drops to a certain critical value, the partons hadronize and the newly formed hadronic system freezes out. This sudden change is described with the help of the Landau matching conditions followed by the simulations done with THERMINATOR. The proposed scenario reproduces well the transverse-momentum spectra, the elliptic flo…
Heavy ion reactions and other collective dynamical processes are frequently described by different theoretical approaches for the different stages of the process, like initial equilibration stage, intermediate locally equilibrated fluid dynamical stage and final freeze-out stage. For the last stage the best known is the Cooper-Frye description used to generate the phase space distribution of emitted, non-interacting, particles from a fluid dynamical expansion/explosion, assuming a final ideal gas distribution, or (less frequently) an out of equilibrium distribution. In this work we do not want…
We present the status of the chemical freeze-out, determined from fits of hadron yields with the statistical hadronization (thermal) model, with focus on the data at the LHC. A description of the yields of hadrons containing light quarks as well as the application of the model for the production of the J/$ψ$ meson is presented. The implications for the QCD phase diagram are discussed.
We reconsider thermal conditions of the central fireball presumed to be the source of abundantly produced strange (anti-)baryons in S -> W collisions at 200 GeV A. We show that it is possible to completely fix the freeze-out temperature of strange particles in terms of the central rapidity kaon to Lambda particle abundance ratio at fixed, high transverse mass using a non-equilibrium hadronization model and the measured quark fugacities.
We extract chemical freeze-out conditions via a thermal model approach from fluctuation observables measured at RHIC and compare with results from lattice QCD and statistical hadronization model fits. The possible influence of additional critical and non-critical fluctuation sources not accounted for in our analysis is discussed.
We show that the simultaneous measurement of yields and fluctuations in heavy ion collisions is capable of falsifying and constraining the statistical hadronization model. We show how such a measurement can test for chemical non-equilibrium, and distinguish between a high temperature chemically equilibrated freeze-out from a supercooled freeze-out with an over-saturated phase space. We further explain how this measurement can be used to obtain a model-independent estimate of the effect of post-freezeout hadronic interactions.
In hydrodynamical modeling of the ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions the freeze-out is typically performed at a constant temperature or density. In this work we apply a dynamical freeze-out criterion, which compares the hydrodynamical expansion rate with the pion scattering rate. Recently many calculations have been done using event-by-event hydrodynamics where the initial density profile fluctuates from event to event. In these event-by-event calculations the expansion rate fluctuates strongly as well, and thus it is interesting to check how the dynamical freeze-out changes hadron distrib…
A detailed study of chemical freeze-out in nucleus-nucleus collisions at beam energy 158A GeV is presented. By analyzing hadronic multiplicities within the statistical hadronization approach, the chemical equilibration of p-p, C-C, Si-Si and Pb-Pb systems is studied as a function of the number of participating nucleons in the system. Additionally, Two Component statistical hadronization model is applied to the data and is found to be able to explain the observed strangeness hadronic phase space under-saturation.
I will describe the latest results from lattice QCD pertaining to a potential flavour hierarchy in the hadronic freeze-out from the QCD crossover region. I will compare these results to a variety of improved hadronic resonance gas calculations and to experimental data of fluctuations of net-charge, net-proton and net-kaon multiplicity distributions, which serve as a proxy for the susceptibilities of conserved quantum numbers on the lattice. I will conclude that there is intriguing evidence for a flavour dependent freeze-out, and I will suggest expansions to the experimental program at RHIC and…
An effective computer program for three dimensional relativistic hydrodynamical model has been developed. It implements a new approach to the early hot phase of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The computer program simulates time-space evolution of nuclear matter in terms of ideal-fluid dynamics. Equations of motions of hydrodynamics are solved making use of finite difference methods. Commonly-used algorithms of numerical relativistic hydrodynamics RHLLE and MUSTA-FORCE have been applied in simulations. To speed-up calculations, parallel processing has been made available for solving hydrody…
In hydrodynamical modelling of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions the freeze-out is typically assumed to take place on a surface of constant temperature or energy density. In this work we apply a dynamical freeze-out criterion, which compares the hydrodynamical expansion rate with the pion scattering rate, to an event-by-event ideal hydrodynamics at the full RHIC collision energy. We present hadron spectra and elliptic flow calculated using (2+1)-dimensional ideal hydrodynamics, and show the differences between constant temperature and dynamical freeze-out criteria. We find that when the f…
A comprehensive and detailed analysis of hadronic abundances measured in Au-Au collisions at RHIC at sqrt(s)_NN = 130 and 200 GeV is presented. The rapidity densities measured in the central rapidity region have been fitted to the statistical hadronization model and the chemical freeze-out parameters determined as a function of centrality, using data from experiments BRAHMS, PHENIX and STAR. The chemical freeze-out temperature turns out to be independent of centrality to a few percent accuracy, whereas the strangeness under-saturation parameter gamma_S decreases from almost unity in central co…
We present results on the evolution of <p_t> with energy, for hadrons emerging from hadronization of a quark-gluon plasma possibly produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. We find that BNL-RHIC energy corresponds to the previously predicted plateau of <p_t>, reminiscent of the assumed first-order QCD phase transition. Heavy hadrons are the best messengers of the transverse flow stall.
We compare the reconstructed hadronization conditions in relativistic nuclear collisions in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy range 4.7-2760 GeV in terms of temperature and baryon-chemical potential with lattice QCD calculations, by using hadronic multiplicities. We obtain hadronization temperatures and baryon chemical potentials with a fit to measured multiplicities by correcting for the effect of post-hadronization rescattering. The post-hadronization modification factors are calculated by means of a coupled hydrodynamical-transport model simulation under the same conditions of appro…
Hydrodynamical calculations have been successful in describing global observables in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions, which aim to observe the production of the quark-gluon plasma. On the other hand, recently, a lot of evidence that there exists a critical end point (CEP) in the QCD phase diagram has been accumulating. Nevertheless, so far, no equation of state with the CEP has been employed in hydrodynamical calculations. In this paper, we construct the equation of state with the CEP on the basis of the universality hypothesis and show that the CEP acts as an attractor of isentropic tr…
We consider an idealized situation where the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) is described by a perfect, 3+1 dimensional fluid dynamic model starting from an initial state and expanding until a final state where freeze-out and/or hadronization takes place. We study the entropy production with attention to effects of (i) numerical viscosity, (ii) late stages of flow where the Bag Constant and the partonic pressure are becoming similar, (iii) and the consequences of final freeze-out and constituent quark matter formation.
The kinetic freeze-out for the hydrodynamical description of relativistic heavy ion collisions is discussed using a background-fluctuation splitting of the hydrodynamical fields. For a single event, the particle spectrum, or its logarithm, can be written as the sum of background part that is symmetric with respect to azimuthal rotations and longitudinal boosts and a part containing the contribution of fluctuations or deviations from the background. Using a complete orthonormal basis to characterize the initial state allows one to write the double differential harmonic flow coefficients determi…
Thermal model fit indicates early chemical freeze-out of multi-strange hadrons with small collective velocities at 200AGeV Au-Au collisions at RHIC. In this work, we present our recent results by SPheRIO hydrodynamical calculations inspired by this picture. In our model, multi-strange hadrons go through chemical freeze-out when the system reaches some temperature close to the phase transition, stopping to make inelastic collisions, and their abundances are therefore determined only by partonic EOS. At a lower temperature thermal freeze-out takes place where elastic collisions are brought to a …
We will numerically investgate two-particle correlation function of CERN--SPS 158 A GeV Pb+Pb central collisions in detail based on a (3+1)-dimensional relativistic hydrodynamical model with first order phase transition. We use the Yano-Koonin-Podgoretski\uı parametrization as well as the usual Cartesian parametrization and analyze the pair momentum dependence of HBT radii extracted from the parametrizations. We find that the interpretation of the temporal radius parameters as the time duration in YKP parametrization is not available for the hydrodynamical model where the source became opaque …
Core-corona procedure and microcanonical hadronization to understand strangeness enhancement in proton-proton and heavy ion collisions in the EPOS4 framework
We present new results on the statistical hadronization of heavy quarks at SPS, RHIC and LHC energies. Several new aspects are considered, among them a separation of the collision geometry into a ``core'' and a ``corona'' part and an estimate of the annihilation rate of charm quark in a hot plasma, together with a critical assessment of its influence on the results. For RHIC energies we investigate the centrality dependence of J/psi production focusing on the model results for different values of the charm production cross section, including its theoretical and experimental uncertainty. We als…
We study the particle production in the early stage of the ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. To this end the Boltzmann kinetic equations for gluons and pions with elastic rescattering are considered together with a simple model for the parton-hadron conversion process (hadronisation). It is shown that the overpopulation of the gluon phase space in the initial state leads to an intermediate stage of Bose enhancement in the low-momentum gluon sector which due to the gluon-pion conversion process is then reflected in the final distribution function of pions. This pattern is very similar to …
We introduce a combined macroscopic/microscopic transport approach employing relativistic hydrodynamics for the early, dense, deconfined stage of the reaction and a microscopic non-equilibrium model for the later hadronic stage where the equilibrium assumptions are not valid anymore. Within this approach we study the dynamics of hot, bulk QCD matter, which is expected to be created in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions at the SPS, the RHIC and the LHC. Our approach is capable of self-consistently calculating the freeze-out of the hadronic system, while accounting for the collective flow o…
We show that the transverse-mass and rapidity spectra of protons and pions produced in Au-Au collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 2.4 GeV can be well reproduced in a thermodynamic model assuming single freeze-out of particles from a spherically symmetric hypersurface. This scenario corresponds to a physical picture used by Siemens and Rasmussen in the original formulation of the blast-wave model. Our framework modifies and extends this approach by incorporation of a Hubble-like expansion of QCD matter and inclusion of resonance decays. In particular, the Delta(1232) resonance is taken into account, with …
We describe two independent frameworks which provide unambiguous determinations of the deconfinement and the decoupling conditions of a relativistic gas at finite temperature. First, we use the Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model to compute meson and baryon masses at finite temperature and determine their melting temperature as a function of their strangeness content. Second, we analyze a simple expanding gas within a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric, which admits a well-defined decoupling mechanism. We examine the decoupling time as a function of the particle mass and cross section. We find ev…
Strangeness flavor has turned out to be a very effective diagnostic tool of relativistic heavy ion physics. The absolute yield provides information about conditions arising in first instants of the interaction. Strange hadrons are abundant allowing a precise study of the chemical freeze-out conditions in the dense matter fireball. The thermal and chemical freeze-out universality seen in strange hadrons confirms sudden hadronization as the breakup mechanism. A plausible cause of sudden fireball breakup is the mechanical instability arising when a quark-gluon plasma phase supercools deeply in it…
