In the recent paper \cite{LoD1}, we classified closed geodesics on Finsler manifolds into rational and irrational two families, and gave a complete understanding on the index growth properties of iterates of rational closed geodesics. This study yields that a rational closed geodesic can not be the only closed geodesic on every irreversible or reversible (including Riemannian) Finsler sphere, and that there exist at least two distinct closed geodesics on every compact simply connected irreversible or reversible (including Riemannian) Finsler 3-dimensional manifold. In this paper, we study the index growth properties of irrational closed geodesics on Finsler manifolds. This study allows us to extend results in \cite{LoD1} on rational and in \cite{DuL1}, \cite{Rad4} and \cite{Rad5} on completely non-degenerate closed geodesics on spheres and $\CP^2$ to every compact simply connected Finsler manifold. Then we prove the existence of at least two distinct closed geodesics on every compact simply connected irreversible or reversible (including Riemannian) Finsler 4-dimensional manifold.
In this paper, we prove the existence of at least two distinct closed geodesics on every compact simply connected irreversible or reversible Finsler (including Riemannian) manifold of dimension not less than 2.
Let $M$ be a compact simply connected manifold satisfying $H^*(M;\mathbf{Q})\cong T_{d,n+1}(x)$ for integers $d\ge 2$ and $n\ge 1$. If all prime closed geodesics on $(M,F)$ with an irreversible bumpy Finsler metric $F$ are elliptic, either there exist exactly $\frac{dn(n+1)}{2}$ (when $d\ge 2$ is even) or $(d+1)$ (when $d\ge 3$ is odd) distinct closed geodesics, or there exist infinitely many distinct closed geodesics.
In this paper, we prove that for every Finsler $4$-dimensional sphere $(S^4,F)$ with reversibility $λ$ and flag curvature $K$ satisfying $\frac{25}{9}\left(\fracλ{1+λ}\right)^2<K\le 1$ with $λ<\frac{3}{2}$, either there exist at least four prime closed geodesics, or there exist exactly three prime non-hyperbolic closed geodesics and at least two of them are irrationally elliptic.
In this paper, we establish first the resonance identity for non-contractible homologically visible prime closed geodesics on Finsler $n$-dimensional real projective space $(\mathbb{R}P^n,F)$ when there exist only finitely many distinct non-contractible closed geodesics on $(\mathbb{R}P^n,F)$, where the integer $n\geq2$. Then as an application of this resonance identity, we prove the existence of at least two distinct non-contractible closed geodesics on $\mathbb{R}P^{n}$ with a bumpy and irreversible Finsler metric. Together with two previous results on bumpy and reversible Finsler metrics in…
In this paper, we study the existence and multiplicity problems for orthogonal Finsler geodesic chords in a manifold with boundary which is homeomorphic to a N-dimensional disk. Under a suitable assumption, which is weaker than convexity, we prove that, if the Finsler metric is reversible, then there are at least N orthogonal Finsler geodesic chords that are geometrically distinct. If the reversibility assumption does not hold, then there are at least two orthogonal Finsler geodesic chords with different values of the energy functional.
If all prime closed geodesics on $(S^n,F)$ with an irreversible Finsler metric $F$ are irrationally elliptic, there exist either exactly $2\left[\frac{n+1}{2}\right]$ or infinitely many distinct closed geodesics. As an application, we show the existence of three distinct closed geodesics on bumpy Finsler $(S^3,F)$ if any prime closed geodesic has non-zero Morse index.
We prove that on any closed Riemannian manifold $(M_1\times M_2,g)$, with $\rank\Hom_1(M_1)\neq0$ and $\dim(M_2)\geq2$, every isometry homotopic to the identity admits infinitely many isometry-invariant geodesics.
In this paper, we prove that for every irreversible Finsler $n$-dimensional real projective space $(\mathbb{R}P^n,F)$ with reversibility $λ$ and flag curvature $K$ satisfying $\frac{16}{9}\left(\fracλ{1+λ}\right)^2<K\le 1$ with $λ<3$, there exist at least $n-1$ non-contractible closed geodesics. In addition, if the metric $F$ is bumpy with $\frac{64}{25}\left(\fracλ{1+λ}\right)^2<K\le 1$ and $λ<\frac{5}{3}$, then there exist at least $2[\frac{n+1}{2}]$ non-contractible closed geodesics, which is the optimal lower bound due to Katok's example. The main ingredients of the proofs are the Fadell-R…
Let $M=S^n/ Γ$ and $h$ be a nontrivial element of finite order $p$ in $π_1(M)$, where the integer $n, p\geq2$, $Γ$ is a finite abelian group which acts freely and isometrically on the $n$-sphere and therefore $M$ is diffeomorphic to a compact space form. In this paper, we prove that for every irreversible Finsler compact space form $(M,F)$ with reversibility $λ$ and flag curvature $K$ satisfying \[ \frac{4p^2}{(p+1)^2} \big(\fracλ{λ+1} \big)^2 < K \leq 1,\;\;λ< \frac{p+1}{p-1}, \] there exist at least $n-1$ non-contractible closed geodesics of class $[h]$. In addition, if the metric $F$ is bum…
We prove a strong multiplicity one theorem for the length spectrum of compact even dimensional hyperbolic spaces i.e. if all but finitely many closed geodesics for two compact even dimensional hyperbolic spaces have the same length, then all closed geodesics have the same length.
In this paper, we first generalize the common index jump theorem for symplectic matrix paths proved in 2002 by Long and Zhu in [LoZ], and get an enhanced version of it. As its applications, we further prove that for a compact simply-connected manifold $(M,F)$ with a bumpy, irreversible Finsler metric $F$ and $H^*(M;{\bf Q})\cong T_{d,n+1}(x)$ for some even integer $d\ge 2$ and integer $n\ge 1$, there exist at least $\frac{dn(n+1)}{2}$ distinct non-hyperbolic closed geodesics with odd Morse indices, provided the number of distinct prime closed geodesics is finite and every prime closed geodesic…
We establish multiplicity results for geometrically distinct contractible closed Reeb orbits of non-degenerate contact forms on a broad class of prequantization bundles. The results hold under certain index requirements on the contact form and are sharp for unit cotangent bundles of CROSS's. In particular, we generalize and put in the symplectic-topological context a theorem of Duan, Liu, Long, and Wang for the standard contact sphere. We also prove similar results for non-hyperbolic contractible closed orbits and briefly touch upon the multiplicity problem for degenerate forms. On the combina…
The Min-max Theory for the area functional, started by Almgren in the early 1960s and greatly improved by Pitts in 1981, was left incomplete because it gave no Morse index estimate for the min-max minimal hypersurface. We advance the theory further and prove the first general Morse index bounds for minimal hypersurfaces produced by it. We also settle the multiplicity problem for the classical case of one-parameter sweepouts.
In this paper we study the existence and multiplicity of periodic orbits of exact magnetic flows with energy levels above the Mañé critical value of the universal cover on a non-compact manifold from the viewpoint of Morse theory.
A celebrated result due to Poincaré affirms that a closed non-degenerate minimizing geodesic $γ$ on an oriented Riemannian surface is hyperbolic. Starting from this classical theorem, our first main result is a general instability criterion for timelike and spacelike closed semi-Riemannian geodesics on a (non)oriented manifold. A key role is played by the spectral index, a new topological invariant that we define through the spectral flow (being the Morse index truly infinite) of a path of selfadjoint Fredholm operators. A major step in the proof of this result is a em new spectral flow formul…
Let $M=S^n/ Γ$ and $h$ be a nontrivial element of finite order $p$ in $π_1(M)$, where the integer $n\geq2$, $Γ$ is a finite group which acts freely and isometrically on the $n$-sphere and therefore $M$ is diffeomorphic to a compact space form. In this paper, we establish first the resonance identity for non-contractible homologically visible minimal closed geodesics of the class $[h]$ on every Finsler compact space form $(M, F)$ when there exist only finitely many distinct non-contractible closed geodesics of the class $[h]$ on $(M, F)$. Then as an application of this resonance identity, we pr…
We classify maximal totally geodesic submanifolds in exceptional symmetric spaces up to isometry. Moreover, we introduce an invariant for certain totally geodesic embeddings of semisimple symmetric spaces, which we call the Dynkin index. We prove a result analogous to the index conjecture: for every irreducible symmetric space of non-compact type, there exists a totally geodesic submanifold which is of minimal codimension and whose non-flat irreducible factors have Dynkin index equal to one.
Let M be an irreducible Riemannian symmetric space. The index i(M) of M is the minimal codimension of a totally geodesic submanifold of M. In previous work the authors proved that i(M) is bounded from below by the rank rk(M) of M. In this paper we classify all irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces M for which the equality holds, that is, rk(M) = i(M). In this context we also obtain an explicit classification of all non-semisimple maximal totally geodesic submanifolds in irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type and show that they are closely related to irreducible symmetric …
In this paper, we prove that the Morse index of a multiplicity one, smooth, min-max minimal hypersurface is generically equal to the dimension of the homology class detected by the families used in the construction. This confirms part of the program (\cite{marques-icm}, \cite{marques-neves-cycles}, \cite{marques-neves-index}, \cite{neves-icm}) proposed by the authors with the goal of developing a Morse theory for the area functional.
We prove that on a closed surface, for any $c>0$, our min-max theory for prescribing mean curvature produces a solution given by a curve of constant geodesic curvature $c$ which is almost embedded, except for finitely many points, at which the solution is a stationary junction with integer density. Moreover, each smooth segment has multiplicity one. The key is a classification of blowups which is new even for $c=0$.
The Allen-Cahn equation is a semilinear PDE which is deeply linked to the theory of minimal hypersurfaces via a singular limit. We prove curvature estimates and strong sheet separation estimates for stable solutions (building on recent work of Wang-Wei) of the Allen-Cahn equation on a 3-manifold. Using these, we are able to show for generic metrics on a 3-manifold, minimal surfaces arising from Allen-Cahn solutions with bounded energy and bounded Morse index are two-sided and occur with multiplicity one and the expected Morse index. This confirms, in the Allen-Cahn setting, a strong form of th…
Given a Lorentzian manifold $(M,g)$, a geodesic $γ$ in $M$ and a timelike Jacobi field $\mathcal Y$ along $γ$, we introduce a special class of instants along $γ$ that we call $\mathcal Y$-pseudo conjugate (or focal relatively to some initial orthogonal submanifold). We prove that the $\mathcal Y$-pseudo conjugate instants form a finite set, and their number equals the Morse index of (a suitable restriction of) the index form. This gives a Riemannian-like Morse index theorem. As special cases of the theory, we will consider geodesics in stationary and static Lorentzian manifolds, where the Jaco…
In this paper we give a proof of the existence of an orthogonal geodesic chord on a Riemannian manifold homeomorphic to a closed disk and with concave boundary. This kind of study is motivated by the link of the multiplicity problem with the famous Seifert conjecture (formulated in 1948) about multiple brake orbits for a class of Hamiltonian systems at a fixed energy level.
In some recent papers, the relations existing between the metric properties of Randers spaces and the conformal geometry of stationary Lorentzian manifolds were discovered and investigated. In this note, we focus on the equality between the index of a geodesic in a Randers space and that of its lightlike lift in the associated conformal stationary spacetime. Moreover we make some remarks about regularity of the energy functional of a Finsler metric on the infinite dimensional manifold of $H^1$ curves between two points, in connection with infinite dimensional techniques in Morse Theory.
We study focal points and Maslov index of a horizontal geodesic $γ:I\to M$ in the total space of a semi-Riemannian submersion $π:M\to B$ by determining an explicit relation with the corresponding objects along the projected geodesic $π\circγ:I\to B$ in the base space. We use this result to calculate the focal Maslov index of a (spacelike) geodesic in a stationary space-time which is orthogonal to a timelike Killing vector field.
The existence of two geometrically distinct closed geodesics on an $n$-dimensional sphere $S^n$ with a non-reversible and bumpy Finsler metric was shown independently by Duan--Long [7] and the author [27]. We simplify the proof of this statement by the following observation: If for some $N \in \mathbb{N}$ all closed geodesics of index $\le N$ of a non-reversible and bumpy Finsler metric on $S^n$ are geometrically equivalent to the closed geodesic $c$ then there is a covering $c^r$ of minimal index growth, i.e. $${\rm ind}(c^{rm})=m {\rm ind}(c^r)-(m-1)(n-1)$$ for all $m \ge 1$ with ${\rm ind}\…
In this paper we adopt an alternative, analytical approach to Arnol'd problem \cite{A1} about the existence of closed and embedded $K$-magnetic geodesics in the round $2$-sphere $\mathbb S^2$, where $K: \mathbb S^2 \rightarrow \mathbb R$ is a smooth scalar function. In particular, we use Lyapunov-Schmidt finite-dimensional reduction coupled with a local variational formulation in order to get some existence and multiplicity results bypassing the use of symplectic geometric tools such as the celebrated Viterbo's theorem and Bottkoll results.
We show that, on a complete and possibly non-compact Riemannian manifold of dimension at least 2 without close conjugate points at infinity, the existence of a closed geodesic with local homology in maximal degree and maximal index growth under iteration forces the existence of infinitely many closed geodesics. For closed manifolds, this was a theorem due to Hingston.
The index of a Riemannian symmetric space is the minimal codimension of a proper totally geodesic submanifold (Onishchik, 1980). There is a conjecture by the first two authors for how to calculate the index. In this paper we give an affirmative answer to this conjecture for the exceptional Riemannian symmetric spaces and for the classical symmetric spaces Sp(r,R)/U(r). Our methodology is new and based on the idea of using slice representations for studying totally geodesic submanifolds.
We show that the index of a lightlike geodesic in a conformally standard stationary spacetime is equal to the index of its spatial projection as a geodesic of a Finsler metric associated to the spacetime. Moreover we obtain the Morse relations of lightlike geodesics connecting a point to an integral line of the standard timelike Killing vector field by using Morse theory on the associated Finsler manifold. To this end, we prove a splitting lemma for the energy functional of a Finsler metric. Finally, we show that the reduction to Morse theory of a Finsler manifold can be done also for timelike…
Let G be a connected compact Lie group acting on a manifold M and let D be a transversally elliptic operator on M. The multiplicity of the index of D is a function on the set of irreducible representations of G. Let T be a maximal torus of G with Lie algebra Lie(T). We construct a finite number of piecewise polynomial functions on the dual vector space Lie(T)*, and give a formula for the multiplicity in term of these functions. The main new concept is the formal equivariant $\hat A$ class.
We show that for an open and dense set non-reversible Finsler metrics on a sphere of odd dimension $n=2m-1 \ge 3$ there is a second closed geodesic with Morse index $\le 4(m+2)(m-1)+2.$
We study the sub-Riemannian exponential for contact distributions on manifolds of dimension greater or equal to 5. We compute an approximation of the sub-Riemannian Hamiltonian flow and show that the conjugate time can have multiplicity 2 in this case. We obtain an approximation of the first conjugate locus for small radii and introduce a geometric invariant to show that the metric for contact distributions typically exhibits an original behavior, different from the classical 3-dimensional case. We apply these methods to the case of 5-dimensional contact manifolds. We provide a stability analy…
