We present high-sensitivity 2'x4' maps of the J=2-1 rotational lines of SiO, CO, 13CO and C18O, observed toward the filamentary Infrared Dark Cloud (IRDC) G035.39-00.33. Single-pointing spectra of the SiO J=2-1 and J=3-2 lines toward several regions in the filament, are also reported. The SiO images reveal that SiO is widespread along the IRDC (size >2 pc), showing two different components: one bright and compact arising from three condensations (N, E and S), and the other weak and extended along the filament. While the first component shows broad lines (linewidths of ~4-7 kms-1) in both SiO J=2-1 and SiO J=3-2, the second one is only detected in SiO J=2-1 and has narrow lines (~0.8 kms-1). The maps of CO and its isotopologues show that low-density filaments are intersecting the IRDC and appear to merge toward the densest portion of the cloud. This resembles the molecular structures predicted by flow-driven, shock-induced and magnetically-regulated cloud formation models. As in outflows associated with low-mass star formation, the excitation temperatures and fractional abundances of SiO toward N, E and S, increase with velocity from ~6 to 40 K, and from ~1E-10 to >1E-8 respectively, over a velocity range of ~7 kms-1. Since 8 micron sources, 24 micron sources and/or extended 4.5 micron emission are detected in N, E and S, broad SiO is likely produced in outflows associated with high-mass protostars. The excitation temperatures and fractional abundances of the narrow SiO lines, however, are very low (~9 K and ~1E-11, respectively), and consistent with the processing of interstellar grains by the passage of a shock with vs~12 kms-1. This emission could be generated i) by a large-scale shock, perhaps remnant of the IRDC formation process; ii) by decelerated or recently processed gas in large-scale outflows driven by 8 micron and 24 micron sources; or iii) by an undetected and widespread population of lower mass protostars. High-angular resolution observations are needed to disentangle between these three scenarios.
We present results of 3 mm observations of SiO maser sources in the Galactic Centre (GC) from observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array between $2010-2014$, along the transitions of the SiO molecule at $v = 1, J = 2-1$ at 86.243 GHz and $v = 2, J = 2-1$ at 85.640 GHz. We also present the results of the 3 mm observations with Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). We detected 5 maser sources from the ATCA data, IRS 7, IRS 9, IRS 10EE, IRS 12N, and IRS 28; and 20 sources from the ALMA data including 4 new sources. These sources are predominantly late-type giants or em…
We collect all published OH, H2O, SiO and CH3OH masers in literature. The associated infrared sources of these four masers were identified with MSX PSC catalogues. We look for common infrared properties among the sources associated with four masers and make a statistical study. The MSX sources associated with stellar OH, stellar H2O and SiO masers concentrated in a small regions and the MSX sources associated with interstellar OH, interstellar H2O and CH3OH masers also concentrated in a small regions in an [A]-[D].vs.[A][-[E] diagram. These results give us new criterion to search for coexistin…
To study the early phases of massive star formation, we present ALMA observations of SiO(5-4) emission and VLA observations of 6 cm continuum emission towards 32 Infrared Dark Cloud (IRDC) clumps, spatially resolved down to $\lesssim 0.05$ pc. Out of the 32 clumps, we detect SiO emission in 20 clumps, and in 11 of them the SiO emission is relatively strong and likely tracing protostellar outflows. Some SiO outflows are collimated, while others are less ordered. For the six strongest SiO outflows, we estimate basic outflow properties. In our entire sample, where there is SiO emission, we find 1…
We present 43 GHz VLA spectra for 51 AGB sources with the goal of verifying an infrared (IR) color cut intended to separate Carbon-rich (C) and Oxygen-rich (O) AGB sources throughout the Galaxy. The color cut is a simple line in the $[K_s]-[A]$ versus $[A]-[E]$ color-color diagram based on 2MASS and MSX photometry, and was originally derived from SiO detection rates in the Bulge Asymmetries and Dynamical Evolution (BAaDE) sample. The division is fully supported by the spectra presented here, which show that SiO maser detections lie on the O-rich side, and SiO nondetections and a single HC$_3$N…
Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs) are very dense and highly extincted regions that host the initial conditions of star and stellar cluster formation. It is crucial to study the kinematics and molecular content of IRDCs to test their formation mechanism and ultimately characterise these initial conditions. We have obtained high-sensitivity Silicon Monoxide, SiO(2-1), emission maps toward the six IRDCs, G018.82$-$00.28, G019.27+00.07, G028.53$-$00.25, G028.67+00.13, G038.95$-$00.47 and G053.11+00.05 (cloud A, B, D, E, I and J, respectively), using the 30-m antenna at the Instituto de Radioastronomía …
Infrared-Dark Clouds (IRDCs) are cold, dense regions of high (optical and infrared) extinction, believed to be the birthplace of high-mass stars and stellar clusters. The physical mechanisms leading to the formation of these IRDCs are not completely understood and it is thus important to study their molecular gas kinematics and chemical content to search for any signature of the IRDCs formation process. Using the 30m-diameter antenna at the Instituto de Radioastronomía Milimétrica, we have obtained emission maps of dense gas tracers (H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ and HN$^{13}$C) and typical shock tracers (…
We present a parsec-scale molecular hydrogen (H$_2$ 1-0 S(1) at 2.12~\micron) outflow discovered from the UKIRT Widefield Infrared Survey for H$_2$. The outflow is located in the infrared dark cloud core MSXDC G053.11+00.05 MM1 at 1.7 kpc and likely associated with two young stellar objects (YSOs) at the center. The overall morphology of the outflow is bipolar along the NE-SW direction with a brighter lobe to the southwest, but the detailed structure consists of several flows and knots. With the total length of $\sim$1 pc, the outflow luminosity is fairly high with $L_{\rm H_{2}} > 6~L_{\sun}$…
Radio and infrared interferometry of SiO maser stars provide complementary information on the atmosphere and circumstellar environment at comparable spatial resolution. Here, we present the latest results on the atmospheric structure and the dust condensation region of AGB stars based on our recent infrared spectro-interferometric observations, which represent the environment of SiO masers. We discuss, as an example, new results from simultaneous VLTI and VLBA observations of the Mira variable AGB star R Cnc, including VLTI near- and mid-infrared interferometry, as well as VLBA observations of…
I am using multi-epoch astrometry from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) to search for new members of the solar neighborhood via their high proper motions. Through this work, I have identified WISE J104915.57-531906.1 as a high proper motion object and have found additional detections in images from the Digitized Sky Survey, the Two Micron All-Sky Survey, and the Deep Near-Infrared Survey of the Southern Sky. I have measured a parallax of 0.496+/-0.037" (2.0+/-0.15 pc) from the astrometry in these surveys, making WISE J104915.57-531906.1 the third closest system to the Sun. During…
We performed a survey in the SiO $J=5\rightarrow4$ line toward a sample of 199 Galactic massive star-forming regions at different evolutionary stages with the SMT 10 m and CSO 10.4 m telescopes. The sample consists of 44 infrared dark clouds (IRDCs), 86 protostellar candidates, and 69 young \HII\ regions. We detected SiO $J=5\rightarrow4$ line emission in 102 sources, with a detection rate of 57\%, 37\%, and 65\% for IRDCs, protostellar candidates, and young \HII\ regions, respectively. We find both broad line with Full Widths at Zero Power (FWZP) $>$ 20 \kms and narrow line emissons of SiO in…
We report on the first 1,432 sources observed using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), from the Bulge Asymmetries and Dynamical Evolution (BAaDE) survey, which aims to obtain tens of thousands of line-of-sight velocities from SiO masers in Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars in the Milky Way. A 71% detection rate of 86 GHz SiO masers is obtained from the infrared color-selected sample, and increases to 80% when considering the likely oxygen-rich stars using Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) colors isolated in a region where [D]-[E] <= 1.38. Based on Galactic distributions,…
We have observed the IRDC G028.23-00.19 at 3.3 mm using CARMA. In its center, the IRDC hosts one of the most massive (~1520 Msun) quiescent, cold (12 K) clumps known (MM1). The low temperature, high NH_2D abundance, narrow molecular line widths, and absence of embedded IR sources (from 3.6 to 70 mu) indicate that the clump is likely prestellar. Strong SiO emission with broad line widths (6-9 km s^-1) and high abundances (0.8-4 x 10^-9) is detected in the northern and southern regions of the IRDC, unassociated with MM1. We suggest that SiO is released to the gas phase from the dust grains throu…
Aims. Red supergiants (RSGs) are among the most luminous of all stars, easily detectable in external galaxies, and may ideally serve as kinematic tracers of Galactic structure. Some RSGs are surrounded by circumstellar envelopes detectable by their dust and molecular and, in particular, maser emission. This study consists of a search for maser emission from silicon monoxide (SiO) toward a significant number of RSGs that are members of massive stellar clusters, many of which have only recently been discovered. Further, we aim to relate the occurrence of maser action to properties of the host st…
We observed a sample of 20 M giants with the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Most show absorption structure at 6.6-6.8 um which we identify as water vapor, and in some cases, the absorption extends from 6.4 um into the SiO band at 7.5 um. Variable stars show stronger H2O absorption. While the strength of the SiO fundamental at 8 um increases monotonically from spectral class K0 to K5, the dependence on spectral class weakens in the M giants. As with previously studied samples, the M giants show considerable scatter in SiO band strength within a given spectral class. All o…
The processes leading to the birth of high-mass stars are poorly understood. We characterise here a sample of 430 massive clumps from the ATLASGAL survey, which are representative of different evolutionary stages. To establish a census of molecular tracers of their evolution we performed an unbiased spectral line survey covering the 3-mm atmospheric window between 84-117 GHz with the IRAM 30m. A smaller sample of 128 clumps has been observed in the SiO (5-4) transition with the APEX telescope to complement the SiO (2-1) line and probe the excitation conditions of the emitting gas, which is the…
We have observed a cluster forming clump (MM3) associated with the infrared dark cloud G34.43+00.24 in the 1.3 mm continuum and the CH3OH, CS, 13CS, SiO, CH3CH2CN, and HCOOCH3 lines with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array and in K-band with the Keck telescope. We have found a young outflow toward the center of this clump in the SiO, CS, and CH3OH lines. This outflow is likely driven by a protostar embedded in a hot core, which is traced by the CH3CH2CN, HCOOCH3, 13CS, and high excitation CH3OH lines. The size of the hot core is about 800 x 300 AU in spite of its low mass (<1.1 M_…
We present near-infrared spectroscopy for 52 ultracool dwarfs, including two newly discovered late-M dwarfs, one new late-M subdwarf candidate, three new L and four new T dwarfs. We also present parallaxes and proper motions for 21 of them. Four of the targets presented here have previous parallax measurements, while all the others are new values. This allow us to populate further the spectral sequence at early types (L0-L4). Combining the astrometric parameters with the new near-infrared spectroscopy presented here, we are able to investigate further the nature of some of the objects. In part…
Radio astrometric campaigns using VLBI have provided distances and proper motions for masers associated with young massive stars (BeSSeL survey). The ongoing BAaDE project plans to obtain astrometric information of SiO maser stars located in the inner Galaxy. These stars are associated with evolved, mass-losing stars. By overlapping optical (Gaia), infrared (2MASS, MSX and WISE) and radio (BAaDE) sources, we expect to obtain important clues on the intrinsic properties and population distribution of late-type stars. Moreover, a comparison of the Galactic parameters obtained with Gaia and VLBI c…
Jets and outflows trace the accretion history of protostars. High-velocity molecular jets have been observed from several protostars in the early Class\,0 phase of star formation, detected with the high-density tracer SiO. Until now, no clear jet has been detected with SiO emission from isolated evolved Class\,I protostellar systems. We report a prominent dense SiO jet from a Class\,I source G205S3 (HOPS\,315: T$_{bol}$ $\sim$ 180 K, spectral index $\sim$ 0.417), with a moderately high mass-loss rate ($\sim$ 0.59 $\times$ 10$^{-6}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$) estimated from CO emission. Together, the…
A new silicon monoxide ($^{28}$Si$^{16}$O) line list covering infrared, visible and ultraviolet regions called SiOUVenIR is presented. This line list extends the infrared EBJT ExoMol line list by including vibronic transitions to the $A\,{}^{1}Π$ and $E\,{}^{1}Σ^{+}$ electronic states. Strong perturbations to the $A\,{}^{1}Π$ band system are accurately modelled through the treatment of 6 dark electronic states: $C\,{}^{1}Σ^{-}$, $D\,{}^{1}Δ$, $a\,{}^{3}Σ^{+}$, $b\,{}^{3}Π$, $e\,{}^{3}Σ^{-}$ and $d\,{}^{3}Δ$. Along with the $X\,{}^{1}Σ^{+}$ ground state, these 9 electronic states were used to b…
We report the discovery of the diatomic molecule SiO in the gas phase in the environment of the recurrent nova T Coronae Borealis. While some of the SiO is photospheric, a substantial portion must arise in the wind from the red giant component of T CrB. A simple fit to the SiO feature, assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium, suggests a SiO column density of 2.8x10^17 /cm2 and temperature ~1000K; the SiO column density is similar to that present in the winds of field red giants. A search for SiO maser emission is encouraged both before and after the next anticipated eruption. We find that the…
B[e] supergiants (B[e]SGs) are evolved massive stars in a short-lived transition phase. During this phase, these objects eject large amounts of material, which accumulates in a circumstellar disk-like structure. The expelled material is typically dense and cool, providing the cradle for molecule and dust condensation and for a rich, ongoing chemistry. Very little is known about the chemical composition of these disks, beyond the emission from dust and CO revolving around the star on Keplerian orbits. As massive stars preserve an oxygen-rich surface composition throughout their life, other oxyg…

Circumstellar environments of oxygen-rich stars are among the strongest SiO maser emitters. Physical processes such as collisions, infrared pumping and overlaps favors the inversion of level population and produce maser emission at different vibrational states. Despite numerous observational and theoretical efforts, we still do not have an unified picture including all the physical processes involved in the SiO maser emission. The aim of this work is to provide homogeneous data in a large sample of oxygen-rich stars. We present a survey of 67 oxygen-rich stars from 7 to 1 mm, in their rotation…
Spectral modeling of the large infrared excess in the Spitzer IRS spectra of HD 172555 suggests that there is more than 10^19 kg of sub-micron dust in the system. Using physical arguments and constraints from observations, we rule out the possibility of the infrared excess being created by a magma ocean planet or a circumplanetary disk or torus. We show that the infrared excess is consistent with a circumstellar debris disk or torus, located at approximately 6 AU, that was created by a planetary scale hypervelocity impact. We find that radiation pressure should remove submicron dust from the d…
We present spectroscopy, astrometry, and photometry of the brown dwarf WISEP J004701.06+680352.1 (W0047+68), an unusually red field L dwarf at a distance of $12.2 \pm 0.4$ parsecs. The three-dimensional space motion identifies it as a member of the AB Dor Moving Group, an identification supported by our classification of W0047+68 as intermediate surface gravity (INT-G) using the Allers \& Liu (2013) near-infrared classification system. This moving group membership implies near-solar metallicity, age $\sim 100-125$ Myr, $M \approx 0.018~M_\odot$, and $\log g \approx 4.5$; the thick condensate c…
