We show non-perturbatively that the power spectrum of a self-interacting scalar field in de Sitter space-time is strongly suppressed on large scales. The cut-off scale depends on the strength of the self-coupling, the number of e-folds of quasi-de Sitter evolution, and its expansion rate. As a consequence, the two-point correlation function of field fluctuations is free from infra-red divergencies.
There exists some evidence of a suppression in power in the CMB multipoles around $l \sim 20-30$. If taken seriously, this is in tension with the simplest inflationary models driven by a single scalar field with a standard type of slowly varying potential function $V(ϕ)$. Such potential functions generate a nearly scale invariant spectrum and so they do not possess the requisite suppression in power. In this paper we explore if canonical two-derivative inflation models, with a step-like feature in the potential, can improve agreement with data. We find that improvement can be made when one uti…
We investigate the sensitivity of Higgs(-like) inflation to higher dimensional operators in the nonminimal couplings and in the potential, both in the metric and Palatini formalisms. We find that, while inflationary predictions are relatively stable against the higher dimensional operators around the attractor point in the metric formalism, they are extremely sensitive in the Palatini one: for the latter, inflationary predictions are spoiled by $|ξ_4| \gtrsim 10^{-6}$ in the nonminimal couplings $(ξ_2 ϕ^2 + ξ_4 ϕ^4 + \cdots)R$, or by $|λ_6| \gtrsim 10^{-16}$ in the Jordan-frame potential $λ_4 …
If the large scale anomalies in the temperature power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background are of primordial origin, they may herald modifications to the slow roll inflationary paradigm on the largest scales. We study the possibility that the origin of the large scale power suppression is a modification of initial conditions during slow roll as a result of a pre-slow roll phase during which the inflaton evolves rapidly. This stage is manifest in a potential in the equations for the Gaussian fluctuations during slow roll and modify the power spectra of scalar perturbations via an initial…
We study a possible origin of the anomalous suppression of the power spectrum at large angular scales in the cosmic microwave background within the framework of explicit string inflationary models where inflation is driven by a closed string modulus parameterizing the size of the extra dimensions. In this class of models the apparent power loss at large scales is caused by the background dynamics which involves a sharp transition from a fast-roll power law phase to a period of Starobinsky-like slow-roll inflation. An interesting feature of this class of string inflationary models is that the n…
We point out that cosmological constraint from the axion isocurvature perturbation is relaxed if the Higgs field obtains a large field value during inflation in the DFSZ axion model. This scenario is consistent with the Higgs inflation model, in which two Higgs doublets have non-minimal couplings and play a role of inflaton.
We construct a string-inspired nonsingular cosmological scenario in which an inflaton field is driven up the potential before the graceful exit by employing a low-energy string effective action with an orbifold compactification. This sets up an initial condition for the inflaton to lead to a sufficient amount of $e$-foldings and to generate a nearly scale-invariant primordial density perturbation during slow-roll inflation. Our scenario provides an interesting possibility to explain a suppressed power spectrum at low multipoles due to the presence of the modulus-driven phase prior to slow-roll…
We investigate to what extent future microwave background experiments might be able to detect a suppression of fluctuation power on large scales in flat and open universe models. Such suppression would arise if fluctuations are generated by causal processes, and a measurement of a small suppression scale would be problematic for inflation models, but consistent with many defect models. More speculatively, a measurement of a suppression scale of the order of the present Hubble radius could provide independent evidence for a fine-tuned inflation model leading to a low-density universe. We find t…
We present constraints on inflationary dynamics and features in the primordial power spectrum of scalar perturbations using the Cosmic Microwave Background temperature, polarization data from Planck 2018 data release and updated likelihoods. We constrain the slow-roll dynamics using Hilltop Quartic Potential and Starobinsky $R+R^2$ model in the Einstein frame using the Planck 2018 binned Plik likelihood. Using the Hilltop as base potential we construct Whipped Inflation potential to introduce suppression in the scalar power spectrum at large angular scales. We notice marginal (68% C.L.) prefer…
Within the effective field theory of inflation, an initialization of the classical dynamics of the inflaton with approximate equipartition between the kinetic and potential energy of the inflaton leads to a brief fast roll stage that precedes the slow roll regime. The fast roll stage leads to an attractive potential in the wave equations for the mode functions of curvature and tensor perturbations. The evolution of the inflationary perturbations is equivalent to the scattering by this potential and a useful dictionary between the scattering data and observables is established.Implementing meth…
We obtain the non-equilibrium effective action of an inflaton like scalar field --the system-- by tracing over sub Hubble degrees of freedom of "environmental" light scalar fields. The effective action is stochastic leading to effective Langevin equations of motion for the fluctuations of the inflaton-like field, with self-energy corrections and stochastic noise correlators that obey a de Sitter space-time analog of a fluctuation dissipation relation. We solve the Langevin equation implementing a dynamical renormalization group resummation of the leading secular terms and obtain the correction…
Hybrid inflation is a two field model where inflation ends due to an instability. In the neighborhood of the instability point, the potential is very flat and the quantum fluctuations dominate over the classical motion of the inflaton and waterfall fields. In this article, we study this regime in the framework of stochastic inflation. We numerically solve the two coupled Langevin equations controlling the evolution of the fields and compute the probability distributions of the total number of e-folds and of the inflation exit point. Then, we discuss the physical consequences of our results, in…
Motivated by the idea that inflation occurs at the GUT symmetry breaking scale, in this paper we construct a new class of large field inflaton potentials where the inflaton starts with a power law potential; after initial period of relative fast roll that lasts until after a few e-folds inside the horizon, it transits to the attractor of the slow roll part of the potential with a lower power. Due to the initial fast roll stages of inflation, we find a suppression in scalar primordial power at large scales and at the same time the choice of the potential can provide us a tensor primordial spect…
After giving a pedagogical review we clarify that the stochastic approach to inflation is generically reliable only at zeroth order in the (geometrical) slow-roll parameter $ε_1$ if and only if $ε_2^2\ll 6/ε_1$, with the notable exception of slow-roll. This is due to the failure of the stochastic $ΔN$ formalism in its standard formulation. However, by keeping the formalism in its regime of validity, we showed that, in ultra-slow-roll, the stochastic approach to inflation reproduces the power spectrum calculated from the linear theory approach.
We propose a new approach for calculating the curvature perturbations produced during inflation in the stochastic formalism. In our formalism, the fluctuations of the e-foldings are directly calculated without perturbatively expanding the inflaton field and they are connected to the curvature perturbations by the $δN$ formalism. The result automatically includes the contributions of the higher order perturbations because we solve the equation of motion non-perturbatively. In this paper, we analytically prove that our result (the power spectrum and the nonlinearity parameter) is consistent with…
Combining the stochastic and $δN$ formalisms, we derive non perturbative analytical expressions for all correlation functions of scalar perturbations in single-field, slow-roll inflation. The standard, classical formulas are recovered as saddle-point limits of the full results. This yields a classicality criterion that shows that stochastic effects are small only if the potential is sub-Planckian and not too flat. The saddle-point approximation also provides an expansion scheme for calculating stochastic corrections to observable quantities perturbatively in this regime. In the opposite regime…

We revisit large field inflation models with modulations in light of the recent discovery of the primordial B-mode polarization by the BICEP2 experiment, which, when combined with the Planck + WP + highL data, gives a strong hint for additional suppression of the CMB temperature fluctuations at small scales. Such a suppression can be explained by a running spectral index. In fact, it was pointed out by two of the present authors (TK and FT) that the existence of both tensor mode perturbations and a sizable running of the spectral index is a natural outcome of large inflation models with modula…
While moving down the potential on its classical slow roll trajectory, the inflaton field is subject to quantum jumps, which take it up or down the potential at random. In "stochastic inflation", the impact of these quantum jumps is modeled by smoothing out the field over (at least) Hubble-patch sized domains and treating fluctuations on smaller scales as noise. The inflaton thus becomes a stochastic process whose values at a given time are calculated using its probability distribution. We generalize this approach for non-canonic kinetic terms of Dirac Born Infeld (DBI) type and investigate th…
We study corrections to the power spectra of curvature and tensor perturbations and the tensor-to-scalar ratio in single field slow roll inflation due to initial conditions imprinted by a fast-roll stage prior to slow roll. For a wide range of initial inflaton kinetic energy, this stage lasts only a few e-folds and merges smoothly with slow-roll leading to non-Bunch-Davies initial conditions for modes that exit the Hubble radius during slow roll. We describe a program that yields the dynamics in the fast-roll stage while matching to the slow roll stage independent of the inflationary potential…
Physical scenarios, leading to highly energetic stochastic gravitational waves backgrounds (for frequencies ranging from the $μ$Hz up to the GHz) are examined. In some cases the typical amplitude of the logarithmic energy spectrum can be even eight orders of magnitude larger than the ordinary inflationary prediction. Scaling violations in the frequency dependence of the energy density of the produced gravitons are discussed.
Stochastic Inflation is an important framework for understanding the physics of de Sitter space and the phenomenology of inflation. In the leading approximation, this approach results in a Fokker-Planck equation that calculates the probability distribution for a light scalar field as a function of time. Despite its successes, the quantum field theoretic origins and the range of validity for this equation have remained elusive, and establishing a formalism to systematically incorporate higher order effects has been an area of active study. In this paper, we calculate the next-to-next-to-leading…
Stochastic effects in multi-field inflationary scenarios are investigated. A hierarchy of diffusion equations is derived, the solutions of which yield moments of the numbers of inflationary $e$-folds. Solving the resulting partial differential equations in multi-dimensional field space is more challenging than the single-field case. A few tractable examples are discussed, which show that the number of fields is, in general, a critical parameter. When more than two fields are present for instance, the probability to explore arbitrarily large-field regions of the potential, otherwise inaccessibl…
A scalar potential coupled to other fields of large disparate masses will exhibit power suppression of the quantum loop corrections from these massive fields. Quintessence fields in the dark energy regime and inflaton fields during inflation often have a very large background field value. Thus any other field with its mass dependent on the quintessence/inflaton background field value through a moderate coupling will become very massive during the dark energy/inflation phase and its quantum corrections to the scalar effective potential will be suppressed. This concept is developed in this paper…
In this paper we develop the formalism for the stochastic approach to inflation at all order in slow-roll parameters. This is done by including the momentum and Hamiltonian constraints into the stochastic equations. We then specialise to the widely used Starobinski approximation where interactions between IR and UV modes are neglected. We show that, whenever this approximation holds, no significant deviations are observed when comparing the two-point correlation functions (power spectrum) calculated with stochastic methods, to the ones calculated with the QFT approach to linear theory. As a by…
Stochastic effects in generic scenarios of inflation with multiple fields are investigated. First passage time techniques are employed to calculate the statistical moments of the number of inflationary $e$-folds, which give rise to all correlation functions of primordial curvature perturbations through the stochastic $δN$ formalism. The number of fields is a critical parameter. The probability of exploring arbitrarily large-field regions of the potential becomes non-vanishing when more than two fields are driving inflation. The mean number of $e$-folds can be infinite, depending on the number …
We point out three correlated predictions of the axion monodromy inflation model: large amplitude of gravitational waves, suppression of power on horizon scales and on scales relevant for the formation of dwarf galaxies. While these predictions are likely generic to models with oscillations in the inflaton potential, the axion monodromy model naturally accommodates the required running spectral index through Planck-scale corrections to the inflaton potential. Applying this model to a combined data set of Planck, ACT, SPT, and WMAP low-$\ell$ polarization cosmic microwave background (CMB) data,…
Though simple inflationary models describe the CMB well, their corrections are often plagued by infrared effects that obstruct a reliable calculation of late-time behaviour. We adapt to cosmology tools designed to address similar issues in other physical systems with the goal of making reliable late-time inflationary predictions. The main such tool is Open EFTs which reduce in the inflationary case to Stochastic Inflation plus calculable corrections. We apply this to a simple inflationary model that is complicated enough to have dangerous IR behaviour yet simple enough to allow the inference o…
We study the effects which the back-reaction of long wavelength fluctuations exert on stochastic inflation. In the cases of power-law and Starobinsky inflation these effects are too weak to terminate the stochastic growth of the inflaton field. However, in the case of the cyclic Ekpyrotic scenario, the back-reaction effects prevent the unlimited growth of the scalar field.
We assess two potential signals of the formation of our universe by the decay of a false vacuum. Negative spatial curvature is one possibility, but the window for its detection is now small. However, another possible signal is a suppression of the CMB power spectrum at large angles. This arises from the steepening of the effective potential as it interpolates between a flat inflationary plateau and the high barrier separating us from our parent vacuum. We demonstrate that these two effects can be parametrically separated in angular scale. Observationally, the steepening effect appears to be ex…
A method to estimate the reliability of a perturbative expansion of the stochastic inflationary Langevin equation is presented and discussed. The method is applied to various inflationary scenarios, as large field, small field and running mass models. It is demonstrated that the perturbative approach is more reliable than could be naively suspected and, in general, only breaks down at the very end of inflation.
During inflation, vacuum quantum fluctuations are amplified and stretched to astrophysical distances. They give rise to fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarisation, and to large-scale structures in our universe. They can also trigger the formation of primordial black holes (PBHs). Such objects could provide the progenitors of the recently detected black-hole mergers, and constitute part or all of the dark matter. Their observation would give invaluable access to parts of the inflationary sector that are unconstrained by the CMB. Since PBHs require large i…
A perturbative method for solving the Langevin equation of inflationary cosmology in presence of backreaction is presented. In the Gaussian approximation, the method permits an explicit calculation of the probability distribution of the inflaton field for an arbitrary potential, with or without the volume effects taken into account. The perturbative method is then applied to various concrete models namely large field, small field, hybrid and running mass inflation. New results on the stochastic behavior of the inflaton field in those models are obtained. In particular, it is confirmed that the…
Inflationary cosmology predicts that the particle horizon should be generically much bigger than the present-day Hubble radius, $1/H_0$. This implies a special regime of super-Hubble scale energy density fluctuations imprinted on the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR), which from present theory could only be explained by inflation Causality constraints are used to determine models for the power spectrum that accommodate a suppression scale. A three parameter likelihood analysis is performed of the COBE-DMR 4-year data with respect to the amplitude, spectral index, and suppression sca…
The stochastic approach to inflation suffers from ambiguities due to the arbitrary choice of the time variable and due to the choice of the factor ordering in the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation. Here it is shown that both ambiguities can be removed if we require that the factor ordering should be set in such a way that physical results are invariant with respect to time reparametrizations. This requirement uniquely selects the so-called Ito factor ordering. Additional ambiguities associated with non-trivial kinetic terms of the scalar fields are also discussed, as well as ways of constra…
An appealing feature of inflationary cosmology is the presence of a phase-space attractor, "slow roll", which washes out the dependence on initial field velocities. We investigate the robustness of this property under backreaction from quantum fluctuations using the stochastic inflation formalism in the phase-space approach. A Hamiltonian formulation of stochastic inflation is presented, where it is shown that the coarse-graining procedure - where wavelengths smaller than the Hubble radius are integrated out - preserves the canonical structure of free fields. This means that different sets of …
We study the dynamics of the Affleck-Dine field after inflation in more detail. After inflation, the Affleck-Dine field inevitably oscillates around the potential minimum. This oscillation is hard to decay and can cause accidental suppression of the consequential baryon asymmetry. This suppression is most effective for the model with non-renormalizable superpotential $W_{AD}\sim Φ^4$ ($Φ$: Affleck-Dine field). It is found that the Affleck-Dine leptogenesis in high-scale inflation, which suffers from serious gravitino overproduction, becomes workable owing to this effect.
Recent analyses of the WMAP 5-year data constrain possible non-adiabatic contributions to the initial conditions of CMB anisotropies. Depending upon the early dynamics of the plasma, the amplitude of the entropic modes can experience a different suppression by the time of photon decoupling. Explicit examples of the latter observation are presented both analytically and numerically when the post-inflationary dynamics is dominated by a stiff contribution.
We analyze the trajectories for multifield DBI inflation, which can arise in brane inflation models, and show that the trajectories are the same as in typical slow roll inflation. We calculate the power spectrum and find that the higher derivative terms of the DBI action lead to a suppression of the contribution from the isocurvature perturbations. We also calculate the bispectrum generated by the isocurvature perturbation, and find that it leads to distinctive features.
Non-commutative inflation is a modification of standard general relativity inflation which takes into account some effects of the space-time uncertainty principle motivated by ideas from string theory. The corrections to the primordial power spectrum which arise in a model of power-law inflation lead to a suppression of power on large scales, and produce a spectral index that is blue on large scales and red on small scales. This suppression and running of the spectral index are not imposed ad hoc, but arise from an early-Universe stringy phenomenology. We show that it can account for some loss…
Axions are among the best motivated dark matter candidates. Their production in the early Universe by the vacuum misalignment mechanism gives rise to isocurvature perturbations, which are constrained by cosmic microwave background measurements. In this paper, we compute the axion isocurvature power spectrum using spectral expansion in the stochastic Starobinsky-Yokoyama formalism, which captures non-linear effects in the axion dynamics. In contrast to most of the existing literature, we focus on high inflationary Hubble rates of order $10^{13}~{\rm GeV}$, and demonstrate that there is a signif…
The wave function for the matter field fluctuations in the infrared sector is studied within the framework of inflationary cosmology. These fluctuations are described by a coarse-grained field which takes into account only the modes with wavelength much bigger than the size of the Hubble horizon. The case of a power-law expanding universe is considered and it is found that the relevant phase-space remains coherent under certain circumstances. In this case the classical stochastic treatment for matter field fluctuations is not valid, however, for $p > 4.6$, the system loses its coherence and a …
The stochastic inflation program is a framework for understanding the dynamics of a quantum scalar field driving an inflationary phase. Though widely used and accepted, there have over recent years been serious criticisms of this theory. In this paper I will present a new theory of stochastic inflation which avoids the problems of the conventional approach. Specifically, the theory can address the quantum-to-classical transition problem, and it will be shown to lead to a dramatic easing of the fine tuning constraints that have plagued inflation theories.
We propose a class of single-field, slow-roll inflation models in which a typical number of $e$-folds can be extremely large. The key point is to introduce a very shallow local minimum near the top of the potential in a hilltop inflation model. In particular, a typical number of $e$-folds is enhanced if classical behavior dominates around the local minimum such that the inflaton probability distribution is drifted to the local minimum as a whole. After the inflaton escapes from the local minimum due to the stochastic dynamics, the ordinary slow-roll inflation follows and it can generate the pr…
We revisit the time evolution of a flat and non-flat direction system during inflation. In order to take into account quantum noises in the analysis, we base on stochastic formalism and solve coupled Langevin equations numerically. We focus on a class of models in which tree-level Hubble-induced mass is not generated. Although the non-flat directions can block the growth of the flat direction's variance in principle, the blocking effects are suppressed by the effective masses of the non-flat directions. We find that the fate of the flat direction during inflation is determined by one-loop radi…
During inflation explicit perturbative computations of quantum field theories which contain massless, non-conformal fields exhibit secular effects that grow as powers of the logarithm of the inflationary scale factor. Starobinskii's technique of stochastic inflation not only reproduces the leading infrared logarithms at each order in perturbation theory, it can sometimes be summed to reveal what happens when inflation has proceeded so long that the large logarithms overwhelm even very small coupling constants. It is thus a cosmological analogue of what the renormalization group does for the ul…
Following inflation, the Universe may pass through an early matter-dominated phase supported by the oscillating inflaton condensate. Initially small fluctuations in the condensate grow gravitationally on subhorizon scales and can collapse to form nonlinear ``inflaton halos''. Their formation and subsequent tidal interactions will source gravitational waves, resulting in a stochastic background in the present Universe. We extend N-body simulations that model the growth and interaction of collapsed structures to compute the resulting gravitational wave emission. The spectrum of this radiation is…
We point out that the prediction of the minimal chaotic inflation model is altered if a scalar field takes a large field value close to the Planck scale during inflation due to a negative Hubble induced mass. In particular, we show that the inflaton potential is effectively suppressed at a large inflaton field value in the presence of such a scalar field. The scalar field may be identified with the standard model Higgs field or flat directions in supersymmetric theory. With such spontaneous suppression, we find that the minimal chaotic inflation model, especially the model with a quadratic pot…

We generalize the treatment of inflationary perturbations to deal with the non-Markovian colored noise emerging from any realistic approach to stochastic inflation. We provide a calculation of the power-spectrum of the gauge-invariant comoving curvature perturbation to first order in the slow-roll parameters. Properly accounting for the constraint that our local patch of the Universe is homogeneous on scales just above the present Hubble radius, we find a blue tilt of the power-spectrum on the largest observable scales, in agreement with the WMAP data which show an unexpected suppression of th…
