Suppose M is a non-compact connected smooth n-manifold. Let D(M) denote the group of diffeomorphisms of M endowed with the compact-open C^\infty-topology and D^c(M) denote the subgroup consisting of diffeomorphisms of M with compact support. Let D(M)_0 and D^c(M)_0 be the connected components of id_M in D(M) and D^c(M) respectively. In this paper we show that the pair (D(M), D^c(M)) admits a topological (\prod^ω\ell_2, \sum^ω\ell_2)-factor. In the case n = 2, this enables us to apply the characterization of (\prod^ω\ell_2, \sum^ω\ell_2)-manifolds and show that the pair (D(M)_0, D^c(M)_0) is a (\prod^ω\ell_2, \sum^ω\ell_2)-manifold and determine its topological type. We also obtain a similar result for groups of homeomorphisms of non-compact topological 2-manifolds.
We show that symplectically embedded $(-1)$-tori give rise to certain elements in the symplectic mapping class group of $4$-manifolds. An example is given where such elements are proved to be of infinite order.
The elliptic 3-manifolds are the closed 3-manifolds that admit a Riemannian metric of constant positive curvature, that is, those that have finite fundamental group. The (Generalized) Smale Conjecture asserts that for any elliptic 3-manifold M, the inclusion from the isometry group of M to the diffeomorphism group of M is a homotopy equivalence. The original Smale Conjecture, for the 3-sphere, was proven by J. Cerf and A. Hatcher, and N. Ivanov proved the generalized conjecture for many of the elliptic 3-manifolds that contain a geometrically incompressible Klein bottle. Our main results are 1…
Suppose M is a noncompact connected smooth 2-manifold without boundary and let D(M)_0 denote the identity component of the diffeomorphism group of M with the compact-open C^infty-topology. In this paper we investigate the topological type of D(M)_0 and show that D(M)_0 is a topological ell_2-manifold and it has the homotopy type of the circle if M is the plane, the open annulus or the open M"obius band, and it is contractible in all other cases. When M admits a volume form w, we also discuss the topological type of the group of w-preserving diffeomorphisms of M. To obtain these results we stud…
Given a closed connected Riemannian manifold M and a connected Riemannian manifold N, we study fiberwise volume decreasing diffeomorphisms on the product M x N. Our main theorem shows that in the presence of certain cohomological condition on M and N such diffeomorphisms must map a fiber diffeomorphically onto another fiber and are therefore fiber volume preserving. As a first corollary, we show that the isometries of M x N split. We also study properly discontinuous actions of a discrete group on M x N. In this case, we generalize the first Bieberbach theorem and prove a special case of an ex…
We show that various classes of products of manifolds do not support transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms. Exploiting the Ruelle-Sullivan cohomology class, we prove that the product of a negatively curved manifold with a rational homology sphere does not support transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms. We extend this result to products of finitely many negatively curved manifolds of dimensions at least three with a rational homology sphere that has vanishing simplicial volume. As an application of this study, we obtain new examples of manifolds that do not support transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms, inc…
We study aspherical manifolds that do not support Anosov diffeomorphisms. Weakening conditions of Gogolev and Lafont, we show that the product of an infranilmanifold with finitely many aspherical manifolds whose fundamental groups have trivial center and finite outer automorphism group does not support Anosov diffeomorphisms. In the course of our study, we obtain a result of independent group theoretic and topological interest on the stability of the Hopf property, namely, that the product of finitely many Hopfian groups with trivial center is Hopfian.
We initiate the study of the monoid of right-veering diffeomorphisms on a compact oriented surface with nonempty boundary. The monoid strictly contains the monoid of products of positive Dehn twists. We explain the relationship to tight contact structures and open book decompositions.
Let M be a smooth compact connected oriented manifold of dimension at least two endowed with a volume form. Assuming certain conditions on the fundamental group $π_1(M)$ we construct quasi-isometric embeddings of either free Abelian or direct products of non-Abelian free groups into the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms of M equipped with the L^p metric induced by a Riemannian metric on M.
In two previous papers the author presented a general construction of finite, fiber- and orientation-preserving group actions on orientable Seifert manifolds. In this paper we restrict our attention to elliptic 3-manifolds. A proof is given that orientation-reversing and fiber-preserving diffeomorphisms of Seifert manifolds do not exist for nonzero Euler class, in particular elliptic 3-manifolds. Each type of elliptic 3-manifold is then considered and the possible group actions that fit the given construction. This is shown to be all but a few cases that have been considered elsewhere. Finally…
We construct Anosov diffeomorphisms on manifolds that are homeomorphic to infranilmanifolds yet have exotic smooth structures. These manifolds are obtained from standard infranilmanifolds by connected summing with certain exotic spheres. Our construction produces Anosov diffeomorphisms of high codimension on infranilmanifolds with irreducible exotic smooth structures.
A long-standing conjecture asserts that any Anosov diffeomorphism of a closed manifold is finitely covered by a diffeomorphism which is topologically conjugate to a hyperbolic automorphism of a nilpotent manifold. In this paper, we show that any closed 4-manifold that carries a Thurston geometry and is not finitely covered by a product of two aspherical surfaces does not support (transitive) Anosov diffeomorphisms.
The group of $\mathcal C^1$-diffeomorphisms of any sparse Cantor subset of a manifold is countable and discrete (possibly trivial). Thompson's groups come out of this construction when we consider central ternary Cantor subsets of an interval. Brin's higher dimensional generalizations $nV$ of Thompson's group $V$ arise when we consider products of central ternary Cantor sets. We derive that the $\mathcal C^2$-smooth mapping class group of a sparse Cantor sphere pair is a discrete countable group and produce this way versions of the braided Thompson groups.
In this paper we discuss the relationship between groups of diffeomorphisms of spheres and balls. We survey results of a topological nature and then address the relationship as abstract (discrete) groups. We prove that the identity component Diff_0(S^{2n-1}) of the group of smooth diffeomorphisms of S^{2n+1} admits no nontrivial homomorphisms to the group of C^1 diffeomorphisms of the ball B^m for any n and m. This result generalizes theorems of Ghys and Herman. We also examine finitely generated subgroups of Diff_0(S^n) and produce an example of a finitely generated torsion free group Gamma w…
We continue our study of the monoid of right-veering diffeomorphisms on a compact oriented surface with nonempty boundary, introduced in [HKM2]. We conduct a detailed study of the case when the surface is a punctured torus; in particular, we exhibit the difference between the monoid of right-veering diffeomorphisms and the monoid of products of positive Dehn twists, with the help of the Rademacher function. We then generalize to the braid group B_n on n strands by relating the signature and the Maslov index. Finally, we discuss the symplectic fillability in the pseudo-Anosov case by comparing …
According to Thurston's stability theorem, every group of C^1 diffeomorphisms of the closed interval is locally indicable (.e., every finitely generated subgroup factors through Z). We show that, even for finitely generated groups, the converse of this statement is not true. More precisely, we show that the semi-direct product between F_2 an Z^2, although locally indicable, does not embed into Diff_+^1 (]0,1[). (Here F_2 is any free subgroup of SL(2,Z), and its action on Z^2 is the projective one.) Moreover, we show that for every non-solvable subgroup G of SL(2,Z), the semi-direct product bet…
Let K \subset Y be a knot in a three manifold which admits a longitude-framed surgery such that the surgered manifold has first Betti number greater than that of Y. We find a formula which computes the twisted Floer homology of the surgered manifold, in terms of twisted knot Floer homology. Using this, we compute the twisted Heegaard Floer homology \underline{HF}^+ of the mapping torus of a diffeomorphism of a closed Riemann surface whose mapping class is periodic, giving an almost complete description of the structure of these groups. When the mapping class is nontrivial, we find in particula…
Let $M$ be a compact one--manifold, and let $\mathrm{Diff}^{1+\mathrm{bv}}(M)$ denote the group of $C^1$ orientation preserving diffeomorphisms of $M$ whose first derivatives have bounded variation. We prove that if $G$ is a group which is not virtually metabelian, then $(G\times\mathbb{Z})*\mathbb{Z}$ is not realized as a subgroup of $\mathrm{Diff}^{1+\mathrm{bv}}(M)$. This gives the first examples of finitely generated groups $G,H\le \mathrm{Diff}_+^\infty(M)$ such that $G\ast H$ does not embed into $\mathrm{Diff}^{1+\mathrm{bv}}(M)$. By contrast, for all countable groups $G,H\le\mathrm{Home…
By extending a result of Kronheimer-Mrowka to the family setting, we prove a gluing formula for the family Seiberg-Witten invariant. This formula allows one to compute the invariant for a smooth family of 4-manifolds by cutting it open along a product family of 3-manifolds and studying the induced maps on monopole Floer (co)homology. When the cutting 3-manifold is an L-space, this formula implies a relation between the family Seiberg-Witten invariant, the Seiberg-Witten invariant of the fiber and the index of the family Dirac operator. We use this relation to calculate the Seiberg-Witten invar…
Let $f:\mathbb{R}^2 \to \mathbb{R}$ be a real homogeneous polynomial and $S(f)$ be the group of diffeomorphisms $h:\mathbb{R}^2 \to \mathbb{R}^2$ preserving $f$, i.e. $f \circ h = f$. Denote by $S(f,r)$, $(0\leq r \leq \infty)$, the identity path component of $S(f)$ with respect to the weak Whitney $C^{r}_{W}$-topology. We prove that $S(f,\infty) = \cdots = S(f,1)$ for all such $f$ and that $S(f,1) \not= S(f,0)$ if and only if $f$ is a product of at least two distinct irreducible over $\mathbb{R}$ quadratic forms.
Let $M$ be a manifold, $N$ a 1-dimensional manifold. Assuming $r \neq \dim(M)+1$, we show that any nontrivial homomorphism $ρ: \text{Diff}^r_c(M)\to \text{Homeo}(N)$ has a standard form: necessarily $M$ is $1$-dimensional, and there are countably many embeddings $ϕ_i: M\to N$ with disjoint images such that the action of $ρ$ is conjugate (via the product of the $ϕ_i$) to the diagonal action of $\text{Diff}^r_c(M)$ on $M \times M \times ...$ on $\bigcup_i ϕ_i(M)$, and trivial elsewhere. This solves a conjecture of Matsumoto. We also show that the groups $\text{Diff}^r_c(M)$ have no countable ind…
