Sideband cooling is a technique that potentially allows mechanical resonators to be prepared in their ground states, important for future applications in quantum technologies. Tian has recently shown that side-band cooling can be implemented by modulating the coupling between a nano-resonator and a superconducting oscillator, a process of frequency conversion [L. Tian, PRB 79, 193407 (2009)]. While side-band cooling is usually treated in the steady-state regime, the effective resonant coupling will also generate near perfect state-swapping from the superconductor to the mechanical resonator. We perform numerical simulations of this system, examining the ground-state cooling achieved by the state-swapping. Further, we show that the superconducting oscillator can be used to control the amplitude and phase of the resonator, while simultaneously cooling it, and thus act as a coherent "quantum feedback controller".
We propose a protocol for entanglement swapping which involves tripartite systems. The generation of remote entanglement induced by the Bell measurement can be easily certified by additional local measurements. We illustrate the protocol in the case of continuous variable systems where the certification is effective for an appropriate class of three-mode Gaussian states. We then apply the protocol to optomechanical systems, showing how mechanical entanglement between two remote micromechanical resonators can be generated and certified via local optical measurements.
We propose a very simple scheme to test the quantum enatanglement swapping in a priori. In the scheme, we only assume the photon detector can distinguish the vacuum and non-vacuum Fock state rather than the exact Fock number states.
We develop a theory for long-distance quantum key distribution based on concatenated entanglement swapping using parametric down-conversion sources and show numerical results of our model. The model incorporates practical resources including multi-pair sources, inefficient detectors with dark counts and lossy channels. We calculate the maximum secret key-generation ratefor up to three entanglement swapping stations by optimizing over resource parameters, and our numerical simulation shows that the range of quantum key distribution can in principle be markedly increased but at the expense of an…
We apply the Wigner formalism of quantum optics to study the role of the zeropoint field fluctuations in entanglement swapping produced via parametric down conversion. It is shown that the generation of mode entanglement between two initially non interacting photons is related to the quadruple correlation properties of the electromagnetic field, through the stochastic properties of the vacuum. The relationship between the process of transferring entanglement and the different zeropoint inputs at the nonlinear crystal and the Bell-state analyser is emphasized.
In this work we study the production and swapping of non-gaussian multipartite entanglement in a setup containing a parametric amplifier which generates three photons in different modes coupled to three qubits. We prove that the entanglement generated in this setup is of nongaussian nature. We introduce witnesses of genuine tripartite nongaussian entanglement, valid both for mode and qubit entanglement. Moreover, those witnesses show that the entanglement generated among the photons can be swapped to the qubits, and indeed the qubits display nongaussian genuine tripartite entanglement over a w…
We report the experimental demonstration of converting coherent optical fields between two different optical wavelengths by coupling two optical modes to a mechanical breathing mode in a silica resonator. The experiment is based on an itinerant approach, in which state-mapping from optical to mechanical and from mechanical to another optical state takes place simultaneously. In contrast to conventional nonlinear optical processes, optomechanical impedance matching as well as efficient optical input-output coupling, instead of phase-matching, plays a crucial role in optomechanics-based waveleng…
Conversion of microwave radiation into the optical range has been predicted to reach unity quantum efficiency in whispering gallery resonators made from an optically nonlinear crystal and supporting microwave and optical modes simultaneously. In this work we theoretically explore and experimentally demonstrate a resonator geometry that can provide the required phase matching for such a conversion at any desired frequency in the sub-THz range. We show that such a ring-shaped resonator not only allows for the phase matching, but also maximizes the overlap of the interacting fields. As a result, …
We develop a theory and accompanying mathematical model for quantum communication via any number of intermediate entanglement swapping operations and solve numerically for up to three intermediate entanglement swapping operations. Our model yields two-photon interference visibilities post-selected on photon counts at the intermediate entanglement-swapping stations. Realistic experimental conditions are accommodated through parametric down-conversion rate, photon-counter efficiencies and dark-count rates, and instrument and transmission losses. We calculate achievable quantum communication dist…
Hybrid quantum systems have been developed with various mechanical, optical and microwave harmonic oscillators. The coupling produces a rich library of interactions including two mode squeezing, swapping interactions, back-action evasion and thermal control. In a multimode mechanical system, coupling resonators of different scales (both in frequency and mass) leverages the advantages of each resonance. For example: a high frequency, easily manipulated resonator could be entangled with a low frequency massive object for tests of gravitational decoherence. Here we demonstrate coherent optomechan…
Integrated photonics represents a technology that could greatly improve quantum communication networks in terms of cost, size, scaling, and robustness. A key benchmark for this is to demonstrate their performance in complex quantum networking protocols, such as entanglement swapping between independent photon-pair sources. Here, using time-resolved detection, and two independent and integrated Si$_3$N$_4$ microring resonator photon-pair sources, operating in the CW regime at telecom wavelengths, we obtained spectral purities up to $0.97 \pm 0.02$ and a HOM interference visibility between the t…
Using on-demand coherence conversion via optical locking in conventional stimulated (three-pulse) photon echoes, ultralong, ultraefficient photon storage has been observed in a rare-earth Pr3+ doped Y2SiO5, where storage time is several orders of magnitude longer and retrieval efficiency is enhanced by fifty times. Compared with the same method applied to two-pulse photon echoes for a rephasing halt, use of spectral grating in the stimulated photon echoes offers a phase-independent coherence conversion between optical and spin states. Eventually an ultralong spin population decay-dependent pho…
We propose a low noise, triply-resonant, electro-optic (EO) scheme for quantum microwave-to-optical conversion based on coupled nanophotonics resonators integrated with a superconducting qubit. Our optical system features a split resonance - a doublet - with a tunable frequency splitting that matches the microwave resonance frequency of the superconducting qubit. This is in contrast to conventional approaches where large optical resonators with free-spectral range comparable to the qubit microwave frequency are used. In our system, EO mixing between the optical pump coupled into the low freque…
An optomechanical interface that converts quantum states between optical fields with distinct wavelengths is proposed. A mechanical mode couples to two optical modes via radiation pressure and mediates the quantum state mapping between the two optical modes. A sequence of optomechanical $π/2$ pulses enables state-swapping between optical and mechanical states as well as the cooling of the mechanical mode. Theoretical analysis shows that high fidelity conversion can be realized for states with small photon numbers in systems with experimentally achievable parameters. The pulsed conversion proce…
Microring resonators are attractive for low-power frequency conversion via Bragg-scattering four-wave-mixing due to their comb-like resonance spectrum. However, conversion efficiency is limited to 50% due to the equal probability of up- and down-conversion. Here, we demonstrate how two coupled microrings enable highly directional conversion between the spectral modes of one of the rings. An extinction between up- and down-conversion of more than 40 dB is experimentally observed. Based on this method, we propose a design for on-chip multiplexed single-photon sources that allow localized frequen…
Quantum dense coding is a protocol for transmitting two classical bits of information from a sender (Alice) to a remote receiver (Bob) by sending only one quantum bit (qubit). In this article, we propose an experimentally feasible scheme to realize quantum dense coding \textit{via} entanglement swapping in a cavity array containing a certain number of two-level atoms. Proper choice of system parameters such as atom-cavity couplings and inter-cavity couplings allows perfect transfer of information. A high fidelity transfer of information is shown to be possible by using recently achieved experi…
Entanglement swapping between photon pairs is a fundamental building block in schemes using quantum relays or quantum repeaters to overcome the range limits of long-distance quantum key distribution. We develop a closed-form solution for the actual quantum states prepared by realistic entanglement swapping, which takes into account experimental deficiencies due to inefficient detectors, detector dark counts, and multiphoton-pair contributions of parametric down-conversion sources. We investigate how the entanglement present in the final state of the remaining modes is affected by the real-worl…
We present our approach for sharing photons and assessing resultant four-photon visibility between two distant parties using concatenated entanglement swapping. In addition we determine the corresponding key generation rate and the quantum bit-error rate. Our model is based on practical limitations of resources, including multipair parametric down-conversion sources, inefficient detectors with dark counts and lossy channels. Through this approach, we have found that a trade-off is needed between experimental run-time, pair-production rate and detector efficiency. Concatenated entanglement swap…
We propose efficient schemes for converting three-photon, four-photon and five-photon GHZ state to a $W$ state or Dicke state, respectively with the nitrogen-vacancy (N-V) centers via single-photon input-output process and cross-Kerr nonlinearities. The total success probability can be improved by iterating the conversion process for the case of three-photon and five-photon while it does not require iteration for converting four-photon GHZ state to a $W$ state. The analysis of feasibility shows that our scheme is feasible for current experimental technology.
We show that the entanglement resulting from an entanglement swapping operation performed with spontaneous parametric down-conversion can be made faithful without post-selection using sum-frequency generation. This invites us to revisit the sum-frequency process and from a proof-of-principle experiment, we demonstrate that it provides a realistic solution for non-linear optics at the single-photon level. This opens the way to attractive alternatives to six-photon protocols based on linear optics used e.g. for the heralded creation of maximally entangled pairs or for the implementation of devic…
We report on a highly efficient waveguide resonator device for the production of 775 nm light using a titanium indiffused LiNbO3waveguide resonator. When scanning the resonance the device produces up to 110 mW of second harmonic power with 140 mW incident on the device - an external conversion efficiency of 75 %. The cavity length is also locked, using a Pound-Drever-Hall type locking scheme, involving feedback to either the cavity temperature or the laser frequency. With laser frequency feedback a stable output power of approximately 28 mW from a 52 mW pump is seen over one hour.
The technique of quantum repeaters is a promising candidate for sending quantum states over long distances through a lossy channel. The usual discussions of this technique deals with only a finite dimensional Hilbert space. However the qubits with which one implements this procedure will "ride" on continuous degrees of freedom of the carrier particles. Here we analyze the action of quantum repeaters using a model based on pulsed parametric down conversion entanglement swapping. Our model contains some basic traits of a real experiment. We show that the state created, after the use of any numbe…
We report entanglement swapping with time-bin entangled photon pairs, each constituted of a 795 nm photon and a 1533 nm photon, that are created via spontaneous parametric down conversion in a non-linear crystal. After projecting the two 1533 nm photons onto a Bell state, entanglement between the two 795 nm photons is verified by means of quantum state tomography. As an important feature, the wavelength and bandwidth of the 795 nm photons is compatible with Tm:LiNbO3-based quantum memories, making our experiment an important step towards the realization of a quantum repeater.
We study a device consisting of a dc-SQUID with two sections of its loop acting as two mechanical resonators. An analog of the parametric down-conversion process in quantum optics can be realized with this device. We show that a two-mode squeezed state can be generated for two overdamped mechanical resonators, where the damping constants of the two mechanical resonators are larger than the coupling strengths between the dc-SQUID and the two mechanical resonators. Thus we show that entangled states of these two mechanical resonators can be generated.
We develop a model for practical, entanglement-based long-distance quantum key distribution employing entanglement swapping as a key building block. Relying only on existing off-the-shelf technology, we show how to optimize resources so as to maximize secret key distribution rates. The tools comprise lossy transmission links, such as telecom optical fibers or free space, parametric down-conversion sources of entangled photon pairs, and threshold detectors that are inefficient and have dark counts. Our analysis provides the optimal trade-off between detector efficiency and dark counts, which ar…
Linking classical microwave electrical circuits to the optical telecommunication band is at the core of modern communication. Future quantum information networks will require coherent microwave-to-optical conversion to link electronic quantum processors and memories via low-loss optical telecommunication networks. Efficient conversion can be achieved with electro-optical modulators operating at the single microwave photon level. In the standard electro-optic modulation scheme this is impossible because both, up- and downconverted, sidebands are necessarily present. Here we demonstrate true sin…
Coherent control of the spatial properties of light is central to a wide variety of applications from high bandwidth quantum and classical communication to high power fiber lasers. Low-loss conversion amongst a complete and orthogonal set of modes is particularly important for robust mode-multiplexed communication. Here, we introduce tunable impedance mismatch between coupled Fabry-Pérot resonators as a powerful tool for manipulation of the spatial and temporal properties of optical fields. In the single-mode regime, frequency dependent impedance matching enables tunable finesse optical resona…
We propose to construct a nonreciprocal single-photon frequency converter via multiple semi-infinite coupled-resonator waveguides (CRWs). We first demonstrate that the frequency of a single photon can be converted nonreciprocally through two CRWs, which are coupled indirectly by optomechanical interactions with two nondegenerate mechanical modes. Based on such nonreciprocity, two different single-photon circulators are proposed in the T-shaped waveguides consisting of three semi-infinite CRWs, which are coupled in pairwise by optomechanical interactions. One circulator is proposed by using two…
A candidate for converting quantum information from microwave to optical frequencies is the use of a single atom that interacts with a superconducting microwave resonator on one hand and an optical cavity on the other. The large electric dipole moments and microwave transition frequencies possessed by Rydberg states allow them to couple strongly to superconducting devices. Lasers can then be used to connect a Rydberg transition to an optical transition to realize the conversion. Since the fundamental source of noise in this process is spontaneous emission from the atomic levels, the resulting …
Mechanical resonators can act as excellent intermediaries to interface single photons in the microwave and optical domains due to their high quality factors. Nevertheless, the optical pump required to overcome the large energy difference between the frequencies can add significant noise to the transduced signal. Here we exploit the remarkable properties of thin-film gallium phosphide to demonstrate bi-directional on-chip conversion between microwave and optical frequencies, realized by piezoelectric actuation of a Gigahertz-frequency optomechanical resonator. The large optomechanical coupling …
Microwave delivery to samples in a cryogenic environment can pose experimental challenges such as restricting optical access, space constraints and heat generation. Moreover, existing solutions that overcome various experimental restrictions do not necessarily provide a large, homogeneous oscillating magnetic field over macroscopic lengthscales, which is required for control of spin ensembles or fast gate operations in scaled-up quantum computing implementations. Here we show fast and coherent control of a negatively charged nitrogen vacancy spin ensemble by taking advantage of the high permit…
We convert propagating qubits encoded as superpositions of zero and one photons to the motion of a micrometer-sized mechanical resonator. Using quantum state tomography, we determine the density matrix of both the propagating photons and the mechanical resonator. By comparing a sufficient set of states before and after conversion, we determine the average process fidelity to be $F_{\textrm{avg}} = 0.83\substack{+0.03-0.06}$ which exceeds the classical bound for the conversion of an arbitrary qubit state. This conversion ability is necessary for using mechanical resonators in emerging quantum c…
The conversion between microwave photons and optical photons with quantum coherence is important for quantum communication and computation. In this paper, we report a proposal using an ensemble of atoms coupled to microwave and optical resonators. Input photons to one resonator are converted into output photons in the other resonator without active operation. Usually the conversion is only optimized at certain frequency. In our proposal, we find that the efficiency is almost a constant and can be close to 100% in a large interval of frequency, i.e. a high-bandwidth conversion can be realized w…
Adiabatic wavelength conversion is experimentally demonstrated at a single photon power-level using an integrated Silicon ring resonator. This approach allows conversion of a photon to arbitrary wavelengths with no energy or phase matching constraints. The conversion is inherently low-noise and efficient with greater than 10% conversion efficiencies for wavelength changes up to 0.5nm, more than twenty times the resonators line-width. The observed wavelength change and efficiency agrees well with theory and bright coherent light demonstrations. These results will enable integrated quantum optic…
Universal sensing the motion of mechanical resonators with high precision and low back-action is of paramount importance in ultra-weak signal detection which plays a fundamental role in modern physics. Here we present a universal scheme that transfer mechanically the motion of the resonator not directly measurable to the one can be precisely measured using mechanical frequency conversion. Demonstration of the scheme at room temperature shows that both the motion imprecision and the back-action force are below the intrinsic level of the objective resonator, which agree well with our theoretical…
We demonstrate conversion of up to 4.5 GHz-frequency microwaves to 1500 nm-wavelength light using optomechanical interactions on suspended thin-film lithium niobate. Our method utilizes an interdigital transducer that drives a free-standing 100 $μ$m-long thin-film acoustic resonator to modulate light travelling in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer or racetrack cavity. Owing to the strong microwave-to-acoustic coupling offered by the transducer in conjunction with the strong photoelastic, piezoelectric, and electro-optic effects of lithium niobate, we achieve a half-wave voltage of $V_π$ = 4.6 V an…
We report on an integrated non-degenerate narrowband photon pair source produced at 890 nm and 1320nm via type II parametric down-conversion in a periodically poled waveguide with high-reflective dielectric mirrors deposited on the waveguide end faces. The conversion spectrum consists of three clusters and only 3 to 4 longitudinal modes with about 150 MHz bandwidth in each cluster. The high conversion efficiency in the waveguide, together with the spectral clustering in the double resonator, leads to a high brightness of $3\times10^3~$pairs/(s$\cdot$mW$\cdot$MHz). The compact and rugged monoli…
The widespread availability of quantum entanglement with photons, in the guise of two-mode squeezed states, can be attributed to the phenomenon of parametric down-conversion. A reinterpretation of this effect with macroscopic mechanical objects can offer a route towards a purely mechanical entanglement and the unique possibility of probing the quantum mechanical nature of our everyday classical world. In spite of this prospect, mechanical two-mode squeezed states have remained elusive due to the inability to recreate the nonlinear interaction at the heart of this phenomenon in the mechanical d…
We analyze the performance of a quantum repeater protocol based on single trapped ions. At each node, single trapped ions embedded into high finesse cavities emit single photons whose polarization is entangled with the ion state. A specific detection of two photons at a central station located half-way between two nodes heralds the entanglement of two remote ions. Entanglement can be extended to long distances by applying successive entanglement swapping operations based on two-ion gate operations that have already been demonstrated experimentally with high precision. Our calculation shows tha…
We propose a device architecture capable of direct quantum electro-optical conversion of microwave to optical photons. The hybrid system consists of a planar superconducting microwave circuit coupled to an integrated whispering-gallery-mode microresonator made from an electro-optical material. We show that electro-optical (vacuum) coupling rates $g_0$ as large as$\sim 2π\, \mathcal{O}(10-100)$ kHz are achievable with currently available technology, due to the small mode volume of the planar microwave resonator. Operating at millikelvin temperatures, such a converter would enable high-efficienc…
Quantum states encoded in microwave photons or qubits can be effectively manipulated, whereas optical photons can be coherently transferred via optical fibre and waveguide. The reversible conversion of quantum states between microwave and optical photons will hence enable the distribution of quantum information over long distance and significantly improve the scalability of hybrid quantum systems. Owning to technological advances, mechanical resonators couple to quantum devices in distinctly different spectral range with tunable coupling, and can serve as a powerful interface to connect those …
We propose a simple scheme to swap the non local correlations, characteristic of a Franson interferometric setup, between pairs of frequency entangled photons emitted by distinct non linear crystals in a parametric down conversion process. Our scheme consists of two distinct sources of frequency entangled photons. One photon of each pair is sent to a separate Mach - Zender interferometer while the other photons of the pairs are mixed by a beam splitter and then detected in a Ou - Mandel interferometer. For suitably postselected joint measuremetns, the photons sent at the Mach -Zender show a co…
The ability to convert quantum states from microwave photons to optical photons is important for hybrid system approaches to quantum information processing. In this paper we report the up-conversion of a microwave signal into the optical telecommunications wavelength band using erbium dopants in a yttrium orthosilicate crystal via stimulated Raman scattering. The microwaves were applied to the sample using a 3D copper loop-gap resonator and the coupling and signal optical fields were single passed. The conversion efficiency was low, in agreement with a theoretical analysis, but can be signific…
We demonstrate for the first time natural phase matching for optical frequency doubling in a high-Q whispering gallery mode resonator made of Lithium Niobate. A conversion efficiency of 9% is achieved at 30 micro Watt in-coupled continuous wave pump power. The observed saturation pump power of 3.2 mW is almost two orders of magnitude lower than the state-of-the-art. This suggests an application of our frequency doubler as a source of non-classical light requiring only a low-power pump, which easily can be quantum noise limited. Our theoretical analysis of the three-wave mixing in a whispering …
Quantum transducers can transfer quantum information between different systems. Microwave-optical photon conversion is important for future quantum networks to interconnect remote superconducting quantum computers with optical fibers. Here we propose a high-speed quantum transducer based on a single-photon emitter in an atomically thin membrane resonator that can couple single microwave photons to single optical photons. The 2D resonator is a freestanding van der Waals heterostructure (may consist of hexagonal boron nitride, graphene, or other 2D materials) that hosts a quantum emitter. The me…
We propose a new method for frequency conversion of photons which is both versatile and deterministic. We show that a system with two resonators ultrastrongly coupled to a single qubit can be used to realize both single- and multiphoton frequency-conversion processes. The conversion can be exquisitely controlled by tuning the qubit frequency to bring the desired frequency-conversion transitions on or off resonance. Considering recent experimental advances in ultrastrong coupling for circuit QED and other systems, we believe that our scheme can be implemented using available technology.
The successes of superconducting quantum circuits at local manipulation of quantum information and photonics technology at long-distance transmission of the same have spurred interest in the development of quantum transducers for efficient, low-noise, and bidirectional frequency conversion of photons between the microwave and optical domains. We propose to realize such functionality through the coupling of electrical, piezoelectric, and optomechanical resonators. The coupling of the mechanical subsystems enables formation of a resonant mechanical supermode that provides a mechanically-mediated…
Third-order parametric down-conversion (TOPDC) describes a class of nonlinear interactions in which a pump photon is converted into a photon triplet. This process can occur spontaneously, or it can be stimulated by seeding fields. In the former case, one typically has the generation of non-Gaussian states of light. In the latter, the situation is more variegated, for stimulated TOPDC (StTOPDC) can be implemented in many ways, depending on the number and properties of the seeding fields. Here we show that StTOPDC can be exploited for the generation of quantum correlated photon pairs. We examine…
Superconducting circuits are among the leading contenders for quantum information processing. This promising avenue has been strengthened with the advent of circuit quantum electrodynamics, underlined by recent experiments coupling on-chip microwave resonators to superconducting qubits. However, moving towards more qubits will require suitable novel architectures. Here, we propose a scalable setup for quantum computing where such resonators are arranged in a two-dimensional grid with a qubit at each intersection. Its versatility allows any two qubits on the grid to be coupled at a swapping ove…
We numerically and experimentally investigate the phononic loss for superconducting resonators fabricated on a piezoelectric substrate. With the help of finite element method simulations, we calculate the energy loss due to electromechanical conversion into bulk and surface acoustic waves. This sets an upper limit for the resonator internal quality factor $Q_i$. To validate the simulation, we fabricate quarter wavelength coplanar waveguide resonators on GaAs and measure $Q_i$ as function of frequency, power and temperature. We observe a linear increase of $Q_i$ with frequency, as predicted by …
We investigate the multiphoton quantum dynamics of a leaking single-mode quantized cavity field coupled with a resonantly driven two-level system possessing permanent dipoles. The frequencies of the interacting subsystems are being considered very different, e.g., microwave ranges for the cavity and optical domains for the frequency of the two-level emitter, respectively. In this way, the emitter couples to the resonator mode via its diagonal dipole moments only. Furthermore, the generalized Rabi frequency resulting form the external coherent driving of the two-level subsystem is assumed as we…
In spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) based quantum information processing (QIP) experiments, there is a tradeoff between the coincide count rates (i.e. the pumping power of the SPDC), which limits the rate of the protocol, and the visibility of the quantum interference, which limits the quality of the protocol. This tradeoff is mainly caused by the multi-photon pair emissions from the SPDCs. In theory, the problem is how to model the experiments without truncating these multi-photon emissions while including practical imperfections. In this paper, we establish a method to theoretic…
Creation of quantum computer is outstanding fundamental and practical problem. The quantum computer could be used for execution of very complicated tasks which are not solvable with the classical computers. The first prototype of solid state quantum computer was created in 2009 with superconducting qubits. However, it suffers from the decoherent processes and it is desirable to find more practical encoding of qubits with long-lived coherence. It could be single impurity or vacancy centers in solids, but their interaction with electromagnetic radiation is rather weak. So, here, ensembles of ato…
Single photon-level quantum frequency conversion has recently been demonstrated using silicon nitride microring resonators. The resonance enhancement offered by such systems enables high-efficiency translation of quantum states of light across wide frequency ranges at sub-watt pump powers. Using a quantum-mechanical Hamiltonian formalism, we present a detailed theoretical analysis of the conversion dynamics in these systems, and show that they are capable of converting single- and multi-photon quantum states. Analytic formulas for the conversion efficiency, spectral conversion probability dens…
