In order to examine the rotational effect around neutron star in tensor-vector-scalar (TeVeS) theory, we consider the slowly rotating relativistic stars with a uniform angular velocity. As a result, we find that similar to the case in general relativity (GR), the angular momentum is proportional to the angular velocity. Additionally, as the value of coupling constant $K$ becomes higher, the frame dragging in TeVeS becomes quite different distribution from that in GR, where we can also see the deviation even in the interior of star. While with smaller value of $K$, although the frame dragging approaches to that expected in GR, the induced vector field due to the rotation does not vanish and still exists. Thus, through the observations associated with relativistic object, one could be possible to distinguish the gravitational theory in strong field regime even in the case that the value of coupling constant $K$ is quite small.
We examine the toroidal oscillations on the slowly rotating relativistic stars in tensor-vector-scalar (TeVeS) theory with the Cowling approximation. As a result, we find that perturbation equations describing the toroidal oscillations are same equation form as in general relativity (GR). Although the frequencies of toroidal oscillations in TeVeS are not so different from those in GR, the momentum inertia depends strongly on the gravitational theory. Thus, observing the frequencies of toroidal oscillations and momentum inertia with high accuracy might reveal the gravitational theory in the str…
In the present paper we investigate self-consistently slowly rotating neutron and strange stars in R-squared gravity. For this purpose we first derive the equations describing the structure of the slowly rotating compact stars in $f(R)$-gravity and then simultaneously solve the exterior and the interior problem. The structure of the slowly rotating neutron stars is studied for two different hadronic equations of state and a strange matter equation of state. The moment of inertia and its dependence on the stellar mass and the $R$-squared gravity parameter $a$ is also examined in details. We fin…
In the present work, we consider the possibility of observationally testing Hořava gravity by using the accretion disk properties around slowly rotating black holes of the Kehagias-Sfetsos solution in asymptotically flat spacetimes. The energy flux, temperature distribution, the emission spectrum as well as the energy conversion efficiency are obtained, and compared to the standard slowly rotating general relativistic Kerr solution. Comparing the mass accretion in a slowly rotating Kehagias-Sfetsos geometry in Hořava gravity with the one of a slowly rotating Kerr black hole, we verify that the…
In the modern era of abundant X-ray detections and the increasing momentum of gravitational waves astronomy, tests of General Relativity in strong field regime become increasingly feasible and their importance for probing gravity cannot be understated. To this end, we study the characteristics of slowly rotating topological neutron stars in the tensor-multi-scalar theories of gravity following the static study of this new type of compact objects by two of the authors. We explore the moment of inertia and verify that universal relations known from General Relativity hold for this new class of c…
We study r-mode instability of rotating compact objects composed of asymmetric and self-interacting Fermionic dark matter (dark stars). It is argued that the instability limit the angular frequency of the stars less than half of the Keplerian frequency. This may constrain the stars as alternatives to fast spinning pulsars or rapidly rotating Kerr black holes.
We study non-geodesic corrections to the quasicircular motion of charged test particles in the field of magnetized slowly rotating neutron stars. The gravitational field is approximated by the Lense-Thirring geometry, the magnetic field is of the standard dipole character. Using a fully-relativistic approach we determine influence of the electromagnetic interaction (both attractive and repulsive) on the quasicircular motion. We focus on the behaviour of the orbital and epicyclic frequencies of the motion. Components of the four-velocity of the orbiting charged test particles are obtained by nu…
We consider the slowly rotating relativistic stars with a uniform angular velocity in the scalar-tensor gravity, and examine the rotational effect around such compact objects. For this purpose, we derive a 2nd order differential equation describing the frame dragging in the scalar-tensor gravity and solve it numerically. As a result, we find that the total angular momentum is proportional to the angular velocity even in the scalar-tensor gravity. We also show that one can observe the spontaneous scalarization in rotational effects as well as the other stellar properties, if the cosmological va…
We study the effects of frame-dragging on the structure of force-free magnetospheres around rotating black holes. For slowly rotating black holes, analytic explorations often focus on transforming an exact force-free solution applicable to a static black hole into a solution approximately applicable to a slowly-rotating black hole via perturbations in black hole spin. We show that the single perturbed monopolar solution most commonly arrived at using such techniques is in fact a separatrix between two broad classes of solutions: those with poloidal magnetic fields that bend upwards towards the…
This work is devoted to the construction of slowly rotating neutron stars in the framework of the nonminimal derivative coupling sector of Horndeski theory. We match the large radius expansion of spherically symmetric solutions with cosmological solutions and we find that the most viable model has only one free parameter. Then, by using several tabulated and realistic equations of state, we establish numerically the upper bound for this parameter in order to construct neutron stars in the slow rotation approximation with the maximal mass observed today. We finally study the surface redshift an…
The Blandford-Znajek monopole is a conjectured solution of force-free electrodynamics in the vicinity of a slowly rotating Kerr black hole, supposedly defined as a perturbation in small angular momentum. It is used to argue for the extraction of energy from rotating black holes by the Blandford-Znajek process. We set up a careful analysis of the perturbative definition of the Blandford-Znajek monopole, showing in particular that the regime in which it is defined allows to use the technique of matched asymptotic expansions. Our conclusion is that the Blandford-Znajek monopole, as it is defined,…
We compute the equation of state for an ensemble of degenerate fermions by using the curved spacetime of a slowly rotating axially symmetric star. We show that the equation of state computed in such curved spacetime depends on the gravitational time dilation as well as on the dragging of inertial frames, unlike an equation of state computed in a globally flat spacetime. The effect of gravitational time dilation leads to a significant enhancement of the maximum mass limit of a degenerate neutron star. However, such an enhancement due to the frame-dragging effect is extremely small. Nevertheless…
We present, in closed analytic form, a general stationary, slowly rotating black hole, which is solution to a large class of alternative theories of gravity in four dimensions. In these theories, the Einstein-Hilbert action is supplemented by all possible quadratic, algebraic curvature invariants coupled to a scalar field. The solution is found as a deformation of the Schwarzschild metric in General Relativity. We explicitly derive the changes to the orbital frequency at the innermost stable circular orbit and at the light ring in closed form. These results could be useful when comparing Gener…
Rotating magnetized white dwarfs are studied within the framework of general relativity using Hartle's formalism. Matter inside magnetized white dwarfs is described by an equation of state of particles under the action of a constant magnetic field which introduces anisotropic pressures. Our study is done for values of magnetic field below $10^{13}$ G -a threshold of the maximum magnetic field obtained by the cylindrical metric solution- and typical densities of WDs. The effects of the rotation and magnetic field combined are discussed, we compute relevant magnitudes such as the moment of inert…
We consider a further extension of our previous works in the treatment of the three-dimensional general relativistic Poynting-Robertson effect, which describes the motion of a test particle around a compact object as affected by the radiation field originating from a rigidly rotating and spherical emitting source, which produces a radiation pressure, opposite to the gravitational pull, and a radiation drag force, which removes energy and angular momentum from the test particle. The gravitational source is modeled as a non-spherical and slowly rotating compact object endowed with a mass quadrup…
We elaborate on a recently proposed model for subsonic quasi-spherical accretion onto slowly rotating pulsars, in which accretion is mediated through a hot quasi-static shell above the neutron star magnetosphere. We show that under the same external conditions, two regimes of subsonic accretion are possible, depending on if plasma cooling in the transition zone is dominated by Compton or radiative processes. We suggest that a transition from the higher luminosity Compton cooling regime to the lower luminosity radiative cooling regime can be responsible for the onset of the `off'-states repeate…
We investigate charge accretion in vicinity of a slowly rotating compact star with a non-stationary electromagnetic field. Exact solutions to the general relativistic Maxwell equations are obtained for a star formed of a highly degenerate plasma with a gravitational field given by the linearized Kerr metric. These solutions are used to formulate and then to study numerically the equations of motion for a charged particle in star's vicinity using the gravitoelectromagnetic force law. The analysis shows that close to the star charge accretion does not always remain ordered. It is found that the …
An important question when studying the light curves produced by hot spots on the surface of rotating neutron stars is, how might the shape of the light curve be affected by relaxing some of the simplifying assumptions that one would adopt on a first treatment of the problem, such as that of a point-like spot. In this work we explore the dependence of light curves on the size and shape of a single hot spot on the surface of slowly-rotating neutron stars. More specifically, we consider two different shapes for the hot spots (circular and annular) and examine the resulting light curves as functi…
We study the global solutions of slowly rotating accretion flows around the supermassive black hole in the nucleus of an elliptical galaxy. The velocity of accreted gas surrounding the black hole is initially subsonic and then falls onto the black hole supersonically, so accretion flow must be transonic. We numerically solve equations from the Bondi radius to near the black hole. The focus of our discussion will be on the properties of slightly rotating accretion flows in which radiative losses have been ignored. This study discusses how outer boundary conditions (the temperature and specific …
The recently-discovered accreting X-ray pulsar IGR J17480--2446 spins at a frequency of ~11 Hz. We show that Type I X-ray bursts from this source display oscillations at the same frequency as the stellar spin. IGR J17480--2446 is the first secure case of a slowly rotating neutron star which shows Type I burst oscillations, all other sources featuring such oscillations spin at hundreds of Hertz. This means that we can test burst oscillation models in a completely different regime. We explore the origin of Type I burst oscillations in IGR J17480--2446 and conclude that they are not caused by glo…
We investigate the slowly rotating general relativistic superfluid neutron stars including the entrainment effect in a two-fluid model, where one fluid represents the superfluid neutrons and the other is the charge-neutral fluid called the proton fluid, made of protons and electrons. The equation of state and the entrainment effect between the superfluid neutrons and the proton fluid are computed using a relativistic mean field (RMF) model where baryon-baryon interaction is mediated by the exchange of $σ$, $ω$, and $ρ$ mesons and scalar self interactions are also included. The equations govern…
