Dynamical systems theory provides powerful methods to extract effective macroscopic dynamics from complex systems with slow modes and fast modes. Here we derive and theoretically support a macroscopic, spatially discrete, model for a class of stochastic reaction-diffusion partial differential equations with cubic nonlinearity. Dividing space into overlapping finite elements, a special coupling condition between neighbouring elements preserves the self-adjoint dynamics and controls interelement interactions. When the interelement coupling parameter is small, an averaging method and an asymptotic expansion of the slow modes show that the macroscopic discrete model will be a family of coupled stochastic ordinary differential equations which describe the evolution of the grid values. This modelling shows the importance of subgrid scale interaction between noise and spatial diffusion and provides a new rigourous approach to constructing semi-discrete approximations to stochastic reaction-diffusion partial differential equations.
We propose a kinetic relaxation-model to describe a generation-recombination reaction of two species. The decay to equilibrium is studied by two recent methods for proving hypocoercivity of the linearized equations. Exponential decay of small perturbations can be shown for the full nonlinear problem. The macroscopic/fast-reaction limit is derived rigorously employing entropy decay, resulting in a nonlinear diffusion equation for the difference of the position densities.
A spatio-temporal evolution of chemicals appearing in a reversible enzyme reaction and modelled by a four component reaction-diffusion system with the reaction terms obtained by the law of mass action is considered. The large time behaviour of the system is studied by means of entropy methods.
Derivation of macroscopic models for advection-diffusion processes in the presence of dominant heterogeneous (e.g., surface) reactions using homogenisation theory or volume averaging is often deemed unfeasible due to the strong coupling between scales that characterise such systems. In this work, we show how the upscaling can be carried out by applying and extending the methods presented in literature. The approach relies on the decomposition of the microscale concentration into a reactive component, given by the eigenfunction of the advection-diffusion operator, the associated eigenvalue whic…
We investigate a recently proposed cross-diffusion system modelling the growth of gliobastoma taking into account size exclusion both in the migration and proliferation process. In addition to degenerate nonlinear cross-diffusion the model includes reaction terms as in the Fisher-Kolmogorov equation and linear ones modelling transition between states of proliferation and migration. We discuss the mathematical structure of the system and provide a complete existence analysis in spatial dimension one. The proof is based on exploiting partial entropy dissipation techniques and fully implicit time…
In this paper we present a derivation and multiscale analysis of a mathematical model for plant cell wall biomechanics that takes into account both the microscopic structure of a cell wall coming from the cellulose microfibrils and the chemical reactions between the cell wall's constituents. Particular attention is paid to the role of pectin and the impact of calcium-pectin cross-linking chemistry on the mechanical properties of the cell wall. We prove the existence and uniqueness of the strongly coupled microscopic problem consisting of the equations of linear elasticity and a system of react…
We consider here a discrete system of spheres interacting through a lubrication force. This force is dissipative, and singular near contact: it behaves like the reciprocal of interparticle distance. We propose a macroscopic constitutive equation which is built as the natural continuous counterpart of this microscopic lubrication model. This model, which is of the newtonian type, relies on an elongational viscosity, which is proportional to the reciprocal of the local fluid fraction. We then establish the convergence in a weak sense of solutions to the discrete problem towards the solution to t…

We introduce a spatially extended transport kinetic FitzHugh-Nagumo model with forced local interactions and prove that its hydrodynamic limit converges towards the classical nonlocal reaction-diffusion FitzHugh-Nagumo system. Our approach is based on a relative entropy method, where the macroscopic quantities of the kinetic model are compared with the solution to the nonlocal reaction-diffusion system. This approach allows to make the rigorous link between kinetic and reaction-diffusion models.
The macroscopic behavior of the solution of a coupled system of partial differential equations arising in the modeling of reaction-diffusion processes in periodic porous media is analyzed. Our mathematical model can be used for studying several metabolic processes taking place in living cells, in which biochemical species can diffuse in the cytosol and react both in the cytosol and also on the organellar membranes. The coupling of the concentrations of the biochemical species is realized via various properly scaled nonlinear reaction terms. These nonlinearities, which model, at the microscopic…
In this paper, we consider a one dimensional pursuit law with delay which is derived from traffic flow modelling. It takes the form of an infinite system of first order coupled delayed equations. Each equation describes the motion of a driver who interacts with the preceding one, taking into account his reaction time. We derive a macroscopic model, namely a Hamilton-Jacobi equation, by a homogenization process for reaction times that are below an explicit threshold. The key idea is to show, that below this threshold, a strict comparison principle holds for the infinite system. In a second time…
A reaction-diffusion system with mass conservation modelling cell polarity is considered. A range of the parameters is found where the solution converges exponentially to the constant equilibrium and the $ω$-limit set of the solution is spatially homogeneous, containing the constant stationary solution as well as possible spatially homogeneous orbits.
In this paper, we construct approximations of the microscopic solution of a nonlinear reaction--diffusion equation in a domain consisting of two bulk-domains, which are separated by a thin layer with a periodic heterogeneous structure. The size of the heterogeneities and thickness of the layer are of order $ε$, where the parameter $ε$ is small compared to the length scale of the whole domain. In the limit $ε\to 0$, when the thin layer reduces to an interface $Σ$ separating two bulk domains, a macroscopic model with effective interface conditions across $Σ$ is obtained. Our approximations are o…
The paper is devoted to a reaction-diffusion equation with delay arising in modelling the immune response. We prove the existence of travelling waves in the bistable case using the Leray-Schauder method. In difference with the previous works, we do not assume here quasi-monotonicity of the delayed reaction term.
In this paper we obtain the existence of a radial solution for some elliptic nonlocal problem with constraints. The problem arises from some reaction-diffusion equation modelling among others system of self-gravitating particles when one looks for its stationary solutions.
The fundamental derivation of macroscopic model equations to describe swarms based on microscopic movement laws and mathematical analyses into their self-organisation capabilities remains a challenge from the perspective of both modelling and analysis. In this paper we clarify relevant continuous macroscopic model equations that describe follower-leader interactions for a swarm where these two populations are fixed. We study the behaviour of the swarm over long and short time scales to shed light on the number of leaders needed to initiate swarm movement, according to the homogeneous or inhomo…

We propose a multiphase modeling approach to describe glioma pseudopalisade patterning under the influence of acidosis. The phases considered at the model onset are glioma, normal tissue, necrotic matter, and interstitial fluid in a void-free volume with acidity represented by proton concentration. We start from mass and momentum balance to characterize the respective volume fractions and deduce reaction-cross diffusion equations for the space-time evolution of glioma, normal tissue, and necrosis. These are supplemented with a reaction-diffusion equation for the acidity dynamics and lead to fo…
