We use publicly available XMM-Newton data to systematically compare the hard X-ray photon indices, $Γ_{\rm 2-10\ keV}$ and the iron K$α$ emission lines of narrow-line (NL) and broad-line Seyfert 1 (BLS1) galaxies. We compile a flux-limited ($f_{\rm 2-10\ keV} \geq 1 \times 10^{-12}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$) sample including 114 radio-quiet objects, with the 2-10 keV luminosity ranging from 10$^{41}$ to 10$^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Our main results are: 1) NLS1s and BLS1s show similar luminosity distributions; 2) The weighted mean of $Γ_{\rm 2-10\ keV}$ of NLS1s, BLS1s and the total sample is $2.04\pm0.04$, $1.74\pm0.02$, $1.84\pm0.02$, respectively; a significant anti-correlation between \ga and FWHMH$β$ suggests that $Γ_{\rm 2-10\ keV} > 2.0$ may be taken to indicate X-ray luminous NLS1 type; 3) The 6.4 keV narrow iron K$α$ lines from NLS1s are generally weaker than that from BLS1s; this would indicate a smaller covering factor of the dusty tori in NLS1s, if the line emission originates from the inner boundary region of the dusty torus in an AGN; 4) all the broadened iron K$α$ lines with intrinsic width $σ>0.5$ keV correspond to FWHM\hb $\leq 4000 ~\kms$.
We present the results of our ALMA observations of three AGN-dominated nuclei in optical Seyfert 1 galaxies (NGC 7469, I Zw 1, and IC 4329 A) and eleven luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) with various levels of infrared estimated energetic contributions by AGNs at the HCN and HCO+ J=3-2 emission lines. The HCN and HCO+ J=3-2 emission lines are clearly detected at the main nuclei of all sources, except for IC 4329 A. The vibrationally excited (v2=1f) HCN J=3-2 and HCO+ J=3-2 emission lines are simultaneously covered, and HCN v2=1f J=3-2 emission line signatures are seen in the main nuclei of tw…
Using new APEX and JCMT spectroscopy of the CO 2-1 line, we undertake a controlled study of cold molecular gas in moderately luminous Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and inactive galaxies from the Luminous Local AGN with Matched Analogs (LLAMA) survey. We use spatially resolved infrared photometry of the LLAMA galaxies from 2MASS, WISE, IRAS & Herschel, corrected for nuclear emission using multi-component spectral energy distribution (SED) fits, to examine the dust-reprocessed star-formation rates (SFRs), molecular gas fractions and star formation efficiencies (SFEs) over their central 1 - 3 kpc.…
We have modeled the velocity-resolved reverberation response of the H\b{eta} broad emission line in nine Seyfert 1 galaxies from the Lick Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) Monitioring Project 2016 sample, drawing inferences on the geometry and structure of the low-ionization broad-line region (BLR) and the mass of the central supermassive black hole. Overall, we find that the H\b{eta} BLR is generally a thick disk viewed at low to moderate inclination angles. We combine our sample with prior studies and investigate line-profile shape dependence, such as log10(FWHM/σ), on BLR structure and kinemati…
We present oxygen abundances relative to hydrogen (O/H) in the narrow line regions (NLRs) gas phases of Seyferts 1 (Sy 1s) and Seyferts 2 (Sy 2s) Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). We used fluxes of the optical narrow emission line intensities [$3\,500<λ($Å$)<7\,000$] of 561 Seyfert nuclei in the local universe ($z\lesssim0.31$) from the second catalog and data release (DR2) of the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey, which focuses on the \textit{Swift}-BAT hard X-ray ($\gtrsim10$ keV) detected AGNs. We derived O/H from relative intensities of the emission lines via the strong-line methods. We find that …
We carried out spectroscopic monitoring of 21 low-redshift Seyfert 1 galaxies using the Kast double spectrograph on the 3-m Shane telescope at Lick Observatory from April 2016 to May 2017. Targeting active galactic nuclei (AGN) with luminosities of λLλ (5100 Å) = 10^44 erg/s and predicted Hβ lags of 20-30 days or black hole masses of 10^7-10^8.5 Msun, our campaign probes luminosity-dependent trends in broad-line region (BLR) structure and dynamics as well as to improve calibrations for single-epoch estimates of quasar black hole masses. Here we present the first results from the campaign, incl…
In order to better understand the nature of post-starburst quasars (PSQs) in the context of galaxy evolution, we compare their properties to those of post-starburst galaxies and quasars from appropriately selected samples possessing similar redshift ($z \sim 0.3$), luminosity ($M_r \sim -$23), and data quality. We consider morphologies, spectral features, and derived physical properties of the stellar populations and central supermassive black hole. PSQs themselves come in two types: the more luminous AGNs with more luminous post-starburst stellar populations hosted by elliptical galaxies, som…
We present mosaicked long-slit spectral maps of 18 nearby Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), 2 LINERs, and 4 star-forming galaxies. With the resulting data cubes taken using the Kast dual spectrograph on the 3 m Shane telescope of the Lick Observatory, we measure the aperture effects on the spectroscopic classification of AGNs. With more starlight included in a larger aperture, the nuclear spectrum that is Seyfert-like may become contaminated. We generated standard spectroscopic classification diagrams in different observing apertures. These show quantitatively how the ensemble of Seyferts migrate…
We present a spectral and imaging analysis of the XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy ESO138-G001, with the aim of characterizing the circumnuclear material responsible for the soft (0.3-2.0 keV) and hard (5-10 keV) X-ray emission. We confirm that the source is absorbed by Compton-thick gas. However, if a self-consistent model of reprocessing from cold toroidal material is used (MYTorus), a possible scenario requires the absorber to be inhomogenous, its column density along the line of sight being larger than the average column density integrated over all lines- of-sigh…
Winds outflowing from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) may carry significant amount of mass and energy out to their host galaxies. In this paper we report the detection of a sub-relativistic outflow observed in the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 Galaxy IRAS17020+4544 as a series of absorption lines corresponding to at least 5 absorption components with an unprecedented wide range of associated column densities and ionization levels and velocities in the range of 23,000-33,000 km/s, detected at X-ray high spectral resolution (E/Delta E ~1000) with the ESA's observatory XMM-Newton. The charge states of the …
As hybrids of narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies and blazars, γ-ray emitting NLS1s are important probes of jet physics in the high Eddington-ratio regime. Only very few of them are known to date; the majority of them below redshift z = 0.5. Here we present the identification of the γ-ray emitting AGN TXS 0943+105 (SDSS J094635.06+101706.1) as a high-redshift NLS1 galaxy. It turns out to be one of the radio-loudest NLS1s known, highly variable at all wavelengths, and shows widely extended radio emission at a (projected) > 100 kpc scale. It is a known strong γ-ray emitter with a luminous flar…
We analyze the jet-disk coupling for different subsamples from a complete hard X-ray Seyfert sample to study the coupling indices and their relation to accretion rate. The results are: (1) the power-law coupling index ranges from nearly unity (linear correlation) for radio-loud Seyferts to significantly less than unity for radio-quiet ones. This declining trend of coupling index also holds from larger sources to compact ones; (2) the Seyferts with intermediate to high accretion rate (Eddington ratio $λ\sim$ 0.001 to 0.3) show a linear jet-disk coupling, but it shallows from near to super Eddin…
Iron K$α$ emission in type-I and type-II Active Galactic Nuclei
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are carbon-based molecules that are ubiquitous in a variety of astrophysical objects and environments. In this work, we use JWST/MIRI MRS spectroscopy of three Seyferts to compare their nuclear PAH emission with that of star-forming regions. This study represents the first of its kind using sub-arcsecond angular resolution data of local luminous Seyferts (Lbol>10^44.46 erg/s) on a wide wavelength coverage (4.9-28.1 micron). We present an analysis of their nuclear PAH properties by comparing the observed ratios with PAH diagnostic model grids, derived fro…
