Noncommutative rational functions appeared in many contexts in system theory and control, from the theory of finite automata and formal languages to robust control and LMIs. We survey the construction of noncommutative rational functions, their realization theory and some of their applications. We also develop a difference-differential calculus as a tool for further analysis.
A hom-associative algebra is an algebra whose associativity is twisted by an algebra homomorphism. It was previously shown by the author that the Hochschild cohomology of a hom-associative algebra $A$ carries a Gerstenhaber structure. In this short paper, we show that this Gerstenhaber structure together with certain operations on the Hochschild homology of $A$ makes a noncommutative differential calculus. As an application, we obtain a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structure on the Hochschild cohomology of a regular unital symmetric hom-associative algebra.
We set up a left ring of fractions over a certain ring of boundary problems for linear ordinary differential equations. The fraction ring acts naturally on a new module of generalized functions. The latter includes an isomorphic copy of the differential algebra underlying the given ring of boundary problems. Our methodology employs noncommutative localization in the theory of integro-differential algebras and operators. The resulting structure allows to build a symbolic calculus in the style of Heaviside and Mikusinski, but with the added benefit of incorporating boundary conditions where the …
We show that if the cochain complex computing Ext groups (in the category of modules over Hopf algebroids) admits a cocyclic structure, then the noncommutative Cartan calculus structure on Tor over Ext dualises in a cyclic sense to a calculus on Coext over Cotor. More precisely, the cyclic duals of the chain resp. cochain spaces computing the two classical derived functors lead to complexes that compute the more exotic ones, giving a cyclic opposite module over an operad with multiplication that induce operations such as a Lie derivative, a cap product (or contraction), and a (cyclic) differen…
In this paper the stable extended domain of a noncommutative rational function is introduced and it is shown that it can be completely described by a monic linear pencil from the minimal realization of the function. This result amends the singularities theorem of Kalyuzhnyi-Verbovetskyi and Vinnikov. Furthermore, for noncommutative rational functions which are regular at a scalar point it is proved that their domains and stable extended domains coincide.
Noncommutative rational functions, i.e., elements of the universal skew field of fractions of a free algebra, can be defined through evaluations of noncommutative rational expressions on tuples of matrices. This interpretation extends their traditional important role in the theory of division rings and gives rise to their applications in other areas, from free real algebraic geometry to systems and control theory. If a noncommutative rational function is analytic at the origin, it can be described by a linear object, called a {\em realization}. In this article we present a realization theory t…
We derive some Positivstellensatzë for noncommutative rational expressions from the Positivstellensatzë for noncommutative polynomials. Specifically, we show that if a noncommutative rational expression is positive on a polynomially convex set, then there is an algebraic certificate witnessing that fact. As in the case of noncommutative polynomials, our results are nicer when we additionally assume positivity on a convex set-- that is, we obtain a so-called "perfect Positivstellensatz" on convex sets.
Call a noncommutative rational function $r$ regular if it has no singularities, i.e., $r(X)$ is defined for all tuples of self-adjoint matrices $X$. In this article regular noncommutative rational functions $r$ are characterized via the properties of their (minimal size) linear systems realizations $r=c^* L^{-1}b$. It is shown that $r$ is regular if and only if $L=A_0+\sum_jA_j x_j$ is privileged. Roughly speaking, a linear pencil $L$ is privileged if, after a finite sequence of basis changes and restrictions, the real part of $A_0$ is positive definite and the other $A_j$ are skew-adjoint. Th…
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We show that the centre of a homologically homogeneous, finitely generated k-algebra has rational singularities. In particular if a finitely generated normal commutative k-algebra has a noncommutative crepant resolution, as introduced by the second author, then it has rational singularities.
We prove $L_{\infty}$-formality for the higher cyclic Hochschild complex $\chH$ over free associative algebra or path algebra of a quiver. The $\chH$ complex is introduced as an appropriate tool for the definition of pre-Calabi-Yau structure. We show that cohomologies of this complex are pure in case of free algebras (path algebras), concentrated in degree zero. It serves as a main ingredient for the formality proof. For any smooth algebra we choose a small qiso subcomplex in the higher cyclic Hochschild complex, which gives rise to a calculus of highly noncommutative monomials, we call them $…
We consider the Noether's problem on the noncommutative real rational functions invariant under the linear action of a finite group. For abelian groups the invariant skew-fields are always rational. We show that for a solvable group the invariant skew-field is finitely generated. The skew-field invariant under a linear action of a solvable group is rational if the action is well-behaved -- given by a so-called complete representation. We determine the groups that admit such representations and call them totally psuedo-unramified. In the second part we study the reach of totally psuedo-unramifi…
Let $B$ be a commutative algebra and $A$ be a $B$-algebra (determined by an algebra homomorphism $\varepsilon:B\rightarrow A$). M. D. Staic introduced a Hochschild like cohomology $H^{\bullet}((A,B,\varepsilon);A)$ called secondary Hochschild cohomology, to describe the non-trivial $B$-algebra deformations of $A$. J. Laubacher et al later obtained a natural construction of a new chain (and cochain) complex $\overline{C}_{\bullet}(A,B,\varepsilon)$ (resp. $\overline{C}^{\bullet}(A,B,\varepsilon)$) in the process of introducing the secondary cyclic (co)homology. It turns out that unlike the clas…
This paper solves the rational noncommutative analog of Hilbert's 17th problem: if a noncommutative rational function is positive semidefinite on all tuples of hermitian matrices in its domain, then it is a sum of hermitian squares of noncommutative rational functions. This result is a generalization and culmination of earlier positivity certificates for noncommutative polynomials or rational functions without hermitian singularities. More generally, a rational Positivstellensatz for free spectrahedra is given: a noncommutative rational function is positive semidefinite or undefined at every m…
Noncommutative surfaces finite over their centres can be realised as orders over surfaces. The aim of this paper is to present a noncommutative generalisation of rational singularities, which we call numerical rationality, for such orders. We show that numerical rationality is independent of the choice of resolution. Our main result is that the log terminal orders arising from the noncommutative minimal model program, in particular, canonical orders are numerically rational. Both of these generalise well known facts about rational singularities in commutative algebraic geometry.
We introduce the new notion of epsilon-graded associative algebras which takes its root into the notion of commutation factors introduced in the context of Lie algebras. We define and study the associated notion of epsilon-derivation-based differential calculus, which generalizes the derivation-based differential calculus on associative algebras. A corresponding notion of noncommutative connection is also defined. We illustrate these considerations with various examples of epsilon-graded algebras, in particular some graded matrix algebras and the Moyal algebra. This last example permits also t…

We study an interplay between operator algebras and geometry of rational elliptic curves. Namely, let $\mathcal{O}_B$ be the Cuntz-Krieger algebra given by square matrix $B=(b-1, ~1, ~b-2, ~1)$, where $b$ is an integer greater or equal to two. It is proved, that there exists a dense self-adjoint sub-algebra of $\mathcal{O}_B$, which is isomorphic (modulo an ideal) to a twisted homogeneous coordinate ring of the rational elliptic curve $\mathcal{E}({\Bbb Q})=\{(x,y,z) \in {\Bbb P}^2({\Bbb C}) ~|~ y^2z=x(x-z)(x-{b-2\over b+2}z)\}$.
This paper describes the structure of invariant skew fields for linear actions of finite solvable groups on free skew fields in $d$ generators. These invariant skew fields are always finitely generated, which contrasts with the free algebra case. For abelian groups or solvable groups $G$ with a well-behaved representation theory it is shown that the invariant skew fields are free on $|G|(d-1)+1$ generators. Finally, positivity certificates for invariant rational functions in terms of sums of squares of invariants are presented.
We show that a semi-commutative Galois extension of a unital associative algebra can be endowed with the structure of a graded q-differential algebra. We study the first and higher order noncommutative differential calculus of semi-commutative Galois extension induced by the graded q-differential algebra. As an example we consider the quaternions which can be viewed as the semi-commutative Galois extension of complex numbers.
Noncommutative functions are graded functions between sets of square matrices of all sizes over two vector spaces that respect direct sums and similarities. They possess very strong regularity properties (reminiscent of the regularity properties of usual analytic functions) and admit a good difference-differential calculus. Noncommutative functions appear naturally in a large variety of settings: noncommutative algebra, systems and control, spectral theory, and free probability. Starting with pioneering work of J.L. Taylor, the theory was further developed by D.-V. Voiculescu, and established …
Consider a monic linear pencil $L(x) = I - A_1x_1 - \cdots - A_gx_g$ whose coefficients $A_j$ are $d \times d$ matrices. It is naturally evaluated at $g$-tuples of matrices $X$ using the Kronecker tensor product, which gives rise to its free locus $Z(L) = \{ X: \det L(X) = 0 \}$. In this article it is shown that the algebras $A$ and $A'$ generated by the coefficients of two linear pencils $L$ and $L'$, respectively, with equal free loci are isomorphic up to radical. Furthermore, $Z(L) \subseteq Z(L')$ if and only if the natural map sending the coefficients of $L'$ to the coefficients of $L$ in…
