We aim to understand the interplay between non-radial oscillations and stellar magnetic activity and test the feasibility of doing asteroseismology of magnetically active stars. We analyze 30 years of photometric time-series data, 3 years of HARPS radial velocity monitoring, and 3 nights of high-cadence HARPS asteroseismic data. We construct a high-S/N HARPS spectrum that we use to determine atmospheric parameters and chemical composition. Spectra observed at different rotation phases are analyzed to search for signs of temperature or abundance variations. An upper limit on the projected rotational velocity is derived from very high-resolution CES spectra. We detect oscillations in EK Eri with a frequency of the maximum power of nu_max = 320+/-32 muHz, and we derive a peak amplitude per radial mode of ~0.15 m/s, which is a factor of ~3 lower than expected. We suggest that the magnetic field may act to suppress low-degree modes. Individual frequencies can not be extracted from the available data. We derive accurate atmospheric parameters, refining our previous analysis. We confirm that the main light variation is due to cool spots, but that other contributions may need to be taken into account. We suggest that the rotation period is twice the photometric period, i.e., P_rot = 2 P_phot = 617.6 d. We conclude from our derived parameters that v sin i < 0.40 km/s. We also link the time series of direct magnetic field measurements available in the literature to our newly derived photometric ephemeris.

Measurement of the angular momenta of pre-main-sequence stars: early evolution of slow and fast rotators and empirical constraints on spin-down torque mechanisms
A cluster intermediate in age between the Pleiades (150 Myr) and the Hyades (600 Myr) is needed to probe the rotational evolution, especially the transition between fast and slow rotation that occurs between the two ages. We study the rich 300 Myr-old open cluster NGC 3532 to provide constraints on angular momentum loss. Measuring the rotation periods builds on our prior work of providing spectroscopic membership information for the cluster, and it supports the chromospheric activity measurements of cluster stars that we provide in a companion paper. Using 42 d-long photometric time series obs…
We simulate possible stellar coronal mass ejection (CME) scenarios over the magnetic cycle of $ε$ Eridani (18 Eridani; HD 22049). We use three separate epochs from 2008, 2011, and 2013, and estimate the radio emission frequencies associated with these events. These stellar eruptions have proven to be elusive, although a promising approach to detect and characterise these phenomena are low-frequency radio observations of potential type II bursts as CME induced shocks propagate through the stellar corona. Stellar type II radio bursts are expected to emit below 450 MHz, similarly to their solar c…
The coeval stars of young open clusters provide insights into the formation of the rotation-activity relationship that elude studies of multi-age field populations. We measure the chromospheric activity of cool stars in the 300 Myr old open cluster NGC 3532 in concert with their rotation periods to study the mass-dependent morphology of activity for this transitional coeval population. Using multi-object spectra of the Ca ii infrared triplet region obtained with the AAOmega spectrograph at the Anglo- Australian Telescope, we measure the chromospheric emission ratios for 454 FGKM cluster member…
A dearth of close-in planets orbiting rapid rotators was reported almost a decade ago. According to this view only slowly spinning stars with rotation periods longer than 5-10 days would host planets with orbital periods shorter than 2 or 3 days. This Letter brings an enlarged and more detailed analysis that led us to the question: Is there really a dearth in that distribution or is it a dearth of data? For this new analysis, we combined different samples of Kepler and TESS stars with confirmed planets or planet candidates with measured stellar rotation periods, using Gaia data to perform an i…
Rotation is a critical physical process operating in the formation of Am stars. There is a strong correlation between low-velocity rotation and chemical peculiarity. However, the existence of many non-CP slow rotators challenges the understanding of Am stars. The purpose of our work is to search for low-velocity rotating non-CP A-type stars and Am stars and to make a comparative analysis. In this paper, we pick out a sample from the LAMOST-Kepler project, including 21 Am stars, 125 non-CP slow rotators, and 53 non-CP fast rotators. We calculate the rotational frequencies through periodic chang…
Context. Long-term chromospheric activity in slow-rotating fully-convective stars has been scarcely explored. Ross 128 (Gl 447) is a slow-rotator and inactive dM4 star which has been extensively observed. It hosts the fourth closest extrasolar planet. Aims. Ross 128 is an ideal target to test dynamo theories in slow-rotating low-mass star. Methods. To characterize the magnetic activity of Ross 128 we study the SK indexes derived from CASLEO, HARPS, FEROS, UVES and XSHOOTER spectra. Using the Generalized Lomb-Scargle and CLEAN periodograms, we analyze the whole SK time-series obtained between 2…
Over the course of their lifetimes, the rotation of solar-type stars goes through different phases. Once they reach the zero-age main sequence, their global rotation rate decreases during the main sequence until at least the solar age, approximately following the empirical Skumanich's law and enabling gyrochronology. Older solar-type stars might then reach a point of transition when they stop braking, according to recent results of asteroseismology. Additionally, recent 3D numerical simulations of solar-type stars show that different regimes of differential rotation can be characterized with t…
