We present a new and especially powerful signature of cosmic strings and other topological or non-topological defects in the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We show that even if defects contribute 1% or less in the CMB temperature anisotropy spectrum, their signature in the local $\tilde{B}$-polarization correlation function at angular scales of tens of arc minutes is much larger than that due to gravitational waves from inflation, even if the latter contribute with a ratio as big as $r\simeq 0.1$ to the temperature anisotropies. We show that when going from non-local to local $\tilde{B}$-polarization, the ratio of the defect signal-to-noise with respect to the inflationary value increases by about an order of magnitude. Proposed B-polarization experiments, with a good sensitivity on arcminute scales, may either detect a contribution from topological defects produced after inflation or place stringent limits on them. Even Planck should be able to improve present constraints on defect models by at least an order of magnitude, to the level of $\ep <10^{-7}$. A future full-sky experiment like CMBpol, with polarization sensitivities of the order of $1μ$K-arcmin, will be able to constrain the defect parameter $\ep=Gv^2$ to a few $\times10^{-9}$, depending on the defect model.
In this work we consider non-zero circular polarization for the CMB radiation as a result of new interactions. We then rewrite the Boltzmann equations for the Stokes parameters $Q$, $U$ and $V$ and show that the circular polarization can generate the B-mode polarization even if no tensor perturbations are present.
The coupling of a scalar field to electromagnetic field via the Chern-Simons term will rotate the polarization directions of the cosmic microwave background radiation. The rotation angle which relies on the distribution of the scalar field on the CMB sky is direction dependent. Such anisotropies will give rise to new distortions to the power spectra of CMB polarization and it can be used to probe the detailed physics of the scalar field. In this paper we use the updated observational data to constrain the anisotropic rotation angle in a model independent way. We find that the dominant effect o…
We discuss the large scale polarization of the cosmic microwave background induced by the anisotropy of the spatial geometry of our universe. Assuming an eccentricity at decoupling of about $0.64 10^{-2}$, we find an average large scale polarization $ΔT_{pol}/ T_0 = (0.5 - 1.0) 10^{-6}$. We suggest that the fortcoming polarization data at large scales from Planck will be able to discriminate between our proposal and the generally accepted reionization scenario.
A stochastic background of primordial gravitational waves could be detected soon in the polarization of the CMB and/or with laser interferometers. There are at least three GWB coming from inflation: those produced during inflation and associated with the stretching of space-time modes; those produced at the violent stage of preheating after inflation; and those associated with the self-ordering of Goldstone modes if inflation ends via a global symmetry breaking scenario, like in hybrid inflation. Each GW background has its own characteristic spectrum with specific features. We discuss the pros…
Circular polarization is a relatively unexplored realm of CMB physics. Given the substantial community effort towards building next generation CMB polarization experiments, including those which will be sensitive to circular polarization, it behooves theorists to understand the possible sources and relevant physics of circular polarization, as encoded in the Stokes V parameter. In this work we develop and derive the requisite formalism, namely the Boltzmann hierarchy for V-mode scalar, vector, and tensor, anisotropies. We derive the V-mode anisotropies induced by a general source term, and dem…
We perform a comprehensive study of the signatures of Lorentz violation in electrodynamics on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies. In the framework of the minimal Standard Model Extension (SME), we consider effects generated by renormalizable operators, both CPT-odd and CPT-even. These operators are responsible for sourcing, respectively, cosmic birefringence and circular polarization. We propagate jointly the effects of all the relevant Lorentz-violating parameters to CMB observables and provide constraints with the most recent CMB datasets. We bound the CPT-even coefficient to…
We present new constraints on cosmic variations of Newton's gravitational constant by making use of the latest CMB data from WMAP, BOOMERANG, CBI and ACBAR experiments and independent constraints coming from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. We found that current CMB data provide constraints at the 10% level, that can be improved to 3% by including BBN data. We show that future data expected from the Planck satellite could constrain G at the 1.5% level while an ultimate, cosmic variance limited, CMB experiment could reach a precision of about 0.4%, competitive with current laboratory measurements.
The contribution of one loop milli-charged fermion vacuum polarization in cosmic magnetic field to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization is considered. Exact and perturbative solution of the density matrix equations of motion in terms of the Stokes parameters are presented. For linearly polarized CMB at decoupling time, it is shown that propagation of CMB photons in cosmic magnetic field would generate elliptic polarization (circular and linear) of the CMB due to milli-charged fermion vacuum polarization. Analytic expressions for the degree of circular polarization and rotation an…
It is known that in contrast with the E-mode polarization, the B-mode polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background cannot be generated by the Compton scattering in the case of scalar mode of metric perturbation. However it is possible to generate the B-mode by the Compton scattering in the case of tensor mode of metric perturbation. For this reason, the ratio of tensor to scalar modes of metric perturbation ($r\sim C_{Bl}/C_{El}$) is estimated by comparing the B-mode power spectrum with the E-mode at least for small $l$. We study the CMB polarization specially B-mode due to the weak interac…
The tensor contribution to the $V$-mode polarization induced by a magnetized plasma at last scattering vanishes exactly. Conversely a polarized background of relic gravitons cannot generate a $V$-mode polarization. The reported results suggest that, in the magnetized $Λ$CDM paradigm, the dominant source of circular dichroism stems from the large-scale fluctuations of the spatial curvature.
We show that a non-minimal coupling of electromagnetism with background torsion can produce birefringence of the electromagnetic waves. This birefringence gives rise to a B-mode polarization of the CMB. From the bounds on B-mode from WMAP and BOOMERanG data, one can put limits on the background torsion at $ξ_{1}T_{1}=(-3.35 \pm 2.65) \times 10^{-22} GeV^{-1}$.
Standard models describing the radiation transfer of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) through Compton scattering predict that cosmological scalar perturbations at linear order are not able to source V and B polarization modes. In this work, we investigate the possibility that such CMB polarization modes are generated even in the presence of linear scalar perturbations only. We provide a general parametrization of the photon-fermion forward-scattering amplitude and compute mixing terms between different CMB polarization modes. We discuss different general extensions of Standard Model inter…
Photon-photon interactions mediated by the neutral hydrogen background can transform plane polarization into circular polarization, through completely forward processes, [gamma+gamma+atom-> gamma+ gamma+atom], in which only the photon polarizations are changed. The ratio of circular to plane polarization intensities is predicted to be at the level of several times 10^{-5} for some regions of angular size less than 1/300 and with large plane polarizations.
Constraints on neutrino masses are estimated based on future observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) including the B-mode polarization produced by CMB lensing using the Planck satellite, and baryon acoustic oscillations distance scale and the galaxy power spectrum from all-sky galaxy redshift survey in the BigBOSS experiment. We estimate the error in the bound on the total neutrino mass to be $Δ\sum m_ν = 0.012$ eV with a 68% confidence level. If the fiducial value of the total neutrino mass is $\sum m_ν= 0.06$ eV, this result implies that the neutrino mass hierarchy must be norm…
The standard scenario of cosmology predicts a measurable amount for linear polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation (CMB) via Thomson scattering, while through this scenario, the generation of circular polarization is excluded. On the another hand, the circular polarization of CMB has not been excluded in observational evidence. The generation of CMB photons circular polarization via their Compton scattering with polarized cosmic electrons is considered in this paper. Our motivation for considering polarized Compton scattering comes from the effects of the external magnetic fi…
Scattering of cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation in galaxy clusters induces polarization signals determined by the quadrupole anisotropy in the photon distribution at the location of clusters. This "remote quadrupole" derived from the measurements of the induced polarization in galaxy clusters provides an opportunity of reconstruction of local CMB temperature anisotropies. In this {\em Letter} we develop an algorithm of the reconstruction through the estimation of the underlying primordial gravitational potential, which is the origin of the CMB temperature and polarization fluctuation…
According to the standard cosmology, near the last scattering surface, the photons scattered via Compton scattering are just linearly polarized and then the primordial circular polarization of the CMB photons is zero. In this work we show that CMB polarization acquires a small degree of circular polarization when a background magnetic field is considered or the quantum electrodynamic sector of standard model is extended by Lorentz-noninvariant operators as well as noncommutativity. The existence of circular polarization for the CMB radiation may be verified during future observation programs a…
We calculate a signature of cosmic strings in the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We find that ionization in the wakes behind moving strings gives rise to extra polarization in a set of rectangular patches in the sky whose length distribution is scale-invariant. The length of an individual patch is set by the co-moving Hubble radius at the time the string is perturbing the CMB. The polarization signal is largest for string wakes produced at the earliest post-recombination time, and for an alignment in which the photons cross the wake close to the time the wake is created…
We demonstrate that a topological defect can explain the hemispherical power asymmetry of the CMB. The first point is that a defect configuration, which already exists prior to inflation, can source asymmetry of the CMB. The second point is that modulation mechanisms, such as the curvaton and other modulation mechanisms, can explain scale-dependence of the asymmetry. Using a simple analysis of the $δN$ formalism, we show models in which scale-dependent hemispherical power asymmetry is explained by primordial configuration of a defect.
Standard cosmological models do predict a measurable amount of anisotropies in the intensity and linear polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation (CMB) via Thomson scattering, even though these theoretical models do not predict circular polarization for CMB radiation. In other hand, the circular polarization of CMB has not been excluded in observational evidences. Here we estimate the circular polarization power spectrum $C_{l}^{V(S)}$ in CMB radiation due to Compton scattering and non-linear photon-photon forward scattering via Euler-Heisenberg Effective Lagrangian. We have es…
The proposed CMBPol mission will be able to detect the imprint of topological defects on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) provided the contribution is sufficiently strong. We quantify the detection threshold for cosmic strings and for textures, and analyse the satellite's ability to distinguish between these different types of defects. We also assess the level of danger of misidentification of a defect signature as from the wrong defect type or as an effect of primordial gravitational waves. A 0.002 fractional contribution of cosmic strings to the CMB temperature spectrum at multipole ten…
Cosmological CPT violation will rotate the polarized direction of CMB photons, convert partial CMB E mode into B mode and vice versa. It will generate non-zero EB, TB spectra and change the EE, BB, TE spectra. This phenomenon gives us a way to detect the CPT-violation signature from CMB observations, and also provides a new mechanism to produce B mode polarization. In this paper, we perform a global analysis on tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ and polarization rotation angles based on current CMB datasets with both low $\ell$ (Planck, BICEP2/Keck Array) and high $\ell$ (POLARBEAR, SPTpol, ACTPol). B…
We point out two ways to search for low-mass axion dark matter using cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization measurements. These appear, in particular, to be some of the most promising ways to directly detect fuzzy dark matter. Axion dark matter causes rotation of the polarization of light passing through it. This gives rise to two novel phenomena in the CMB. First, the late-time oscillations of the axion field today cause the CMB polarization to oscillate in phase across the entire sky. Second, the early-time oscillations of the axion field wash out the polarization produced at last-sc…
We present developing of method of the numerical analysis of polarization in the Gauss--Legendre Sky Pixelization (GLESP) scheme for the CMB maps. This incorporation of the polarization transforms in the pixelization scheme GLESP completes the creation of our new method for the numerical analysis of CMB maps. The comparison of GLESP and HEALPix calculations is done.
I derive formulas for the real space CMB temperature and polarization by solving the first order Boltzmann equation for the Stokes parameters I, Q and U.
Constraints on neutrino masses are estimated based on future observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), which includes the B-mode polarization produced by CMB lensing from the Planck satellite, and the growth rate of cosmic structure from the Euclid redshift survey by using the Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo (MCMC) method. The error in the bound on the total neutrino mass is estimated to be $Δ\sum m_ν = 0.075$ eV with a 68\% confidence level. By using the growth rate rather than the galaxy power spectrum, accurate constraints are obtained, since the growth rate is less influenced by the …
We study the impact of modifying the vector sector of gravity on the CMB polarization. We employ the Einstein-aether theory as a concrete example. The Einstein-aether theory admits dynamical vector perturbations generated during inflation, leaving imprints on the CMB polarization. We derive the perturbation equations of the aether vector field in covariant formalism and compute the CMB B-mode polarization using the modified CAMB code. It is found that the amplitude of the B-mode signal from the aether field can surpass the one from the inflationary gravitational waves. The shape of the spectru…
The Universe is the grandest conceivable scale on which the human mind can strive to understand nature. The amazing aspect of cosmology, the branch of science that attempts to understand the origin and evolution of the Universe, is that it is largely comprehensible by applying the same basic laws of physics that we use for other branches of physics. The observed cosmic microwave background (CMB) is understood by applying the basic laws of radiative processes and transfer, masterfully covered in the classic text by S. Chandrasekhar, in the cosmological context. In addition to the now widely acc…
The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) Polarization plays an important role in current cosmological studies. CMB B-mode polarization is the most effective probe to primordial gravitational waves (PGWs) and a test of the inflation as well as other theories of the early universe such as bouncing and cyclic universe. So far, major ground-based CMB polarization experiments are located in the southern hemisphere.Recently, China has launched the Ali CMB Polarization Telescope (AliCPT) in Tibetan Plateau to measure CMB B mode polarization and detect the PGWs in northern hemisphere. AliCPT include two …
The Thomson optical depth from reionization is a limiting factor in measuring the amplitude of primordial fluctuations, and hence in measuring physics that affects the low-redshift amplitude, such as the neutrino masses. Current constraints on the optical depth, based on directly measuring large-scale cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization, are challenging due to foregrounds and systematic effects. Here, we consider an indirect measurement of large-scale polarization, using observed maps of small-scale polarization together with maps of fields that distort the CMB, such as CMB lensing …
We present efficient algorithms for CMB lensing simulation and power spectrum es- timation for flat-sky CMB polarization maps. We build a pure B-mode estimator to remedy E to B leakage due to partial sky coverage. We show that our estimators are unbiased, and consistent with the projected errors. We demonstrate our algorithm using simulated observations of small sky patches with realistic noise and weights for upcoming CMB polarization experiments.
Photon-photon interactions, as described by the standard Heisenberg-Euler interaction, can transform plane polarization of the CMB into circular polarization, in the period right after last scattering. We estimate the standard deviation of the resulting circular polarization parameter, as constrained by confining observations to angular regions of large plane polarization, and find results of the order of $10^{-9}$ for the Stokes parameter $V$.
We forecast how current ({\planck}) and future ({\prism}) cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments constrain the adiabatic mode and its admixtures with primordial isocurvature modes, using measurements of the reconstructed CMB lensing potential and lensing-induced CMB B-mode polarization anisotropies in combination with the CMB temperature and E-mode polarization anisotropies. We first study the characteristic features of the CMB temperature, polarization and lensing spectra for adiabatic and isocurvature modes. We then consider how lensing-induced B-mode polarization and lensing potentia…
One of the primary scientific targets of current and future CMB polarization experiments is the search for a stochastic background of gravity waves in the early universe. As instrumental sensitivity improves, the limiting factor will eventually be B-mode power generated by gravitational lensing, which can be removed through use of so-called delensing algorithms. We forecast prospects for delensing using lensing maps which are obtained externally to CMB polarization: either from large-scale structure observations, or from high-resolution maps of CMB temperature. We conclude that the forecasts i…
The primordial anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background are linearly polarized via Compton-scattering. On the other hand, a primordial degree of circular polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background is not observationally excluded. In this work, we discuss the generation of the circular polarization of CMB via their scattering on the cosmic neutrino background since the epoch of recombination. We show that photon-neutrino interaction can transform plane polarization into circular polarization through processes $γ+ν\rightarrowγ+ν$ and the Stokes-V parameter of CMB has linear dependenc…
We determine the full C_l spectra and correlation functions of the temperature and polarization anisotropies in the CMB, generated by a source modeled by the large N limit of spontaneously broken global O(N)-theories. We point out a problem in the standard approach of treating the radiation-matter transition by interpolating the eigenvectors of the unequal-time correlators of the source energy-momentum tensor. This affects the CMB predictions from all type of cosmic defects. We propose a method to overcome this difficulty, and find that in the large-N global model that we study, differences in…
Generation of the B-mode of CMB polarization by background of relic gravitational wave is discussed in connection with the BICEP2 measurements. Description of the polarization maps in terms of the eigenvectors of the polarization matrix is considered.
The CMB polarization promises to unveil the dawn of time measuring the gravitational wave background emitted by the Inflation. The CMB signal is faint, however, and easily contaminated by the Galactic foreground emission, accurate measurements of which are thus crucial to make CMB observations successful. We review the CMB polarization properties and the current knowledge on the Galactic synchrotron emission, which dominates the foregrounds budget at low frequency. We then focus on the S-Band Polarization All Sky Survey (S-PASS), a recently completed survey of the entire southern sky designed …
Mapping CMB polarization is an essential ingredient of current cosmological research. Particularly challenging is the measurement of an extremely weak B-mode polarization that can potentially yield unique insight on inflation. Achieving this objective requires very precise measurements of the secondary polarization components on both large and small angular scales. Scattering of the CMB in galaxy clusters induces several polarization effects whose measurements can probe cluster properties. Perhaps more important are levels of the statistical polarization signals from the population of clusters…
We consider dark matter as singlet fermionic particles which carrying magnetic dipole moment to explore its contribution on the polarization of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons. We show that Dirac fermionic dark matter has no contribution on the CMB polarization. However, in the case of Majorana dark matter this type of interaction leads to the B-mode polarization in presence of primordial scalar perturbations which is in contrast with standard scenario for the CMB polarization. We numerically calculate the B-mode power spectra and plot $C_l^{BB}$ for different dark matter masses and …
We consider the imprints of local massive defects, such as a black hole or a massive monopole, during inflation. The massive defect breaks the background homogeneity. We consider the limit that the physical Schwarzschild radius of the defect is much smaller than the inflationary Hubble radius so a perturbative analysis is allowed. The inhomogeneities induced in scalar and gravitational wave power spectrum are calculated. We obtain the amplitudes of dipole, quadrupole and octupole anisotropies in curvature perturbation power spectrum and identify the relative configuration of the defect to CMB …
We study the distribution functions of the CMB polarization angle $ψ$, focusing on the Planck 2018 CMB maps. We extend the model of Preece & Battye (2014) of Gaussian correlated $Q$ and $U$ Stokes parameters to allow nonzero means. When the variances of $Q$ and $U$ are equal and their covariance and means are zero, the polarization angle is uniformly distributed. Otherwise the uniform distribution will be modulated by harmonics with $2ψ$ and $4ψ$ phases. These modulations are visible in the Planck 2018 CMB maps. Furthermore, the mean value of $U$ is peculiar compared to the power spectrum.
Axion-like particles (ALPs) can form a network of cosmic strings and domain walls that survives after recombination and leads to anisotropic birefringence of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). In addition to studying cosmic strings, we clarify and emphasize how the formation of ALP-field domain walls impacts the cosmic birefringence signal; these observations provide a unique way of probing ALPs with masses in the range $3H_0 \lesssim m_a \lesssim 3H_{\rm cmb}$. Using measurements of CMB birefringence from several telescopes, we find no evidence for axion-defect-induced anisotropic birefri…
Both the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) and Planck observations reported the hemispherical asymmetry of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature fluctuation. The hemispherical asymmetry might be stemmed from the primordial statistical anisotropy during the inflationary era of the universe. In this paper, we study possible implications of the primordial power spectra with dipolar anisotropy on the CMB temperature fluctuation and polarizations. We explicitly show that the statistical dipolar anisotropy may induce the off-diagonal (\(\ell'\neq\ell\)) $TT$, $EE$, $BB$, and $T…
Impacts of observational systematic errors on the lensing analysis of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization are investigated by numerical simulations. We model errors of gain, angle, and pointing in observation of the CMB polarization and simulate polarization fields modulated by the errors. We discuss the response of systematics-induced $B$-modes to amplitude and spatial scale of the imposed errors and show that the results of the lensing reconstruction and delensing analysis behave according to it. It is observed that error levels expected in the near future lead to no significa…
Future precision measurements of CMB polarizations can shed new light on the problem so called Hubble tension. The Hubble tension comes from the difference of the evolutions of the Hubble parameter which are determined with two different distance ladders. The standard distance ladder with the observation of Cepheid variables and type Ia supernovae gives larger values of the Hubble constant, and the inverse distance ladder with the observation of the baryon acoustic oscillations both in the CMB and in the clustering of galaxies gives smaller values of the Hubble constant. These different evolut…
Searching for the signal of primordial gravitational waves in the B-modes (BB) power spectrum is one of the key scientific aims of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiments. However, this could be easily contaminated by several foreground issues, such as the thermal dust emission. In this paper we study another mechanism, the cosmic birefringence, which can be introduced by a CPT-violating interaction between CMB photons and an external scalar field. Such kind of interaction could give rise to the rotation of the linear polarization state of CMB photons, and consequently i…
We focus on the ongoing and future observations for both the 21 cm line and the CMB B-mode polarization produced by a CMB lensing, and study their sensitivities to the effective number of neutrino species, the total neutrino mass, and the neutrino mass hierarchy. We find that combining the CMB observations with future square kilometer arrays optimized for 21 cm line such as Omniscope can determine the neutrino mass hierarchy at 2 sigma. We also show that a more feasible combination of Planck + POLARBEAR and SKA can strongly improve errors of the bounds on the total neutrino mass and the effect…
We present a novel mathematical formalism that allows to easily compute the expected kinetic Sunyaev Zeldovich (kSZ) signal in intensity and polarization due to an anisotropic primordial Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). We derive the expected intensity and polarization distortions in the direction of non-moving galaxy clusters and then we generalize our calculations for non-zero peculiar velocity. We show that, in the direction of moving clusters, low CMB multipoles impose intensity and polarization spectral distortions with different frequency dependences. The polarization signal primarily …

We demonstrate that for a cosmic variance limited experiment, CMB E polarization alone places stronger constraints on cosmological parameters than CMB temperature. For example, we show that EE can constrain parameters better than TT by up to a factor 2.8 when a multipole range of l=30-2500 is considered. We expose the physical effects at play behind this remarkable result and study how it depends on the multipole range included in the analysis. In most relevant cases, TE or EE surpass the TT based cosmological constraints. This result is important as the small scale astrophysical foregrounds a…
Cosmic polarization rotation, which may result from parity-violating new physics or the presence of primordial magnetic fields, converts $E$-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) into $B$-mode polarization. Anisotropic cosmic polarization rotation leads to statistical anisotropy in CMB polarization and can be reconstructed with quadratic estimator techniques similar to those designed for gravitational lensing of the CMB. At the sensitivity of upcoming CMB surveys, lensing-induced $B$-mode polarization will act as a limiting factor in the search for anisotropic cosmic polar…
I propose a model of dipole modulation in Cosmic Background Microwave Radiation (CMBR) polarization fields Q and U. It is shown that the modulation leads to correlations between l and l multipoles where either l = l or l = l \pm 1, but the contribution for the case l = l cancels out after summing over m. We perform a detailed mathematical analysis of the E and B mode correlations and obtain the final result in a closed form.
Generation of cosmic microwave background (CMB) elliptic polarization due to the Cotton-Mouton (CM) effect in a cosmic magnetic field is studied. We concentrate on the generation of CMB circular polarization and on the rotation angle of the CMB polarization plane from the decoupling time until at present. For the first time, a rather detailed analysis of the CM effect for an arbitrary direction of the cosmic magnetic field with respect to photon direction of propagation is done. Considering the CMB linearly polarized at the decoupling time, it is shown that the CM effect is one of the most sub…
We study the signatures of local type primordial non-Gaussianity, parametrized by $\fnl$, of scalar perturbations in CMB polarization using the probability distribution functions, Minkowski Functionals and Betti numbers. We show that the lowest order non-Gaussian deviation of the PDF of the total polarization intensity is at order $(\fnlσ)^2$. We calculate the non-Gaussian deviations of Minkowski Functionals and Betti numbers from simulated polarization maps. We find that $E$ mode polarization provides independent and equally strong constraint on $\fnl$ as temperature fluctuations. The non-Gau…
