We consider the non-resonant mixing between photons and scalar ALPs with masses much less than the plasma frequency along the path, with specific reference to the chameleon scalar field model. The mixing would alter the intensity and polarization state of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. We find that the average modification to the CMB polarization modes is negligible. However the average modification to the CMB intensity spectrum is more significant and we compare this to high precision measurements of the CMB monopole made by the far infrared absolute spectrophotometer (FIRAS) on board the COBE satellite. The resulting 95\% confidence limit on the scalar-photon conversion probability in the primordial field (at 100 GHz) is P < 2.6x10^{-2}. This corresponds to a degenerate constraint on the photon-scalar coupling strength, g, and the magnitude of the primordial magnetic field. Taking the upper bound on the strength of the primordial magnetic field derived from the CMB power spectra, B < 5.0x10^{-9}G, this would imply an upper bound on the photon-scalar coupling strength in the range g < 7.14x10^{-13}GeV^{-1} to g < 9.20x10^{-14}GeV^{-1}, depending on the power spectrum of the primordial magnetic field.
In order to satisfy limits on the allowed variation of particle masses from big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) until today, the chameleon scalar field is required to reach its attractor solution early on in its cosmological evolution. Brax et al. (2004) have shown this to be possible for certain specific initial conditions on the chameleon field at the end of inflation. However the extreme fine-tuning necessary to achieve this, poses a problem if the chameleon is to be viewed a natural candidate for dark energy. In this article we revisit the behaviour of the chameleon in the early Universe, inclu…
In the present work, we discuss the effects of the inclusion of sterile-active neutrino oscillations during the production of primordial light-nuclei. We assume that the sterile neutrino mass-eigenstate might oscillate with the two lightest active neutrino mass- eigenstates, with mixing angles $ϕ_1$ and $ϕ_2$. We also allow a constant renormalization (represented by a parameter ($ζ$)) of the sterile neutrino occupation factor. Taking $ζ$ and the mixing angles as free parameters, we have computed distribution functions of active and sterile neutrinos and primordial abundances. Using observable …
We show that a direct coupling between a chameleon-like scalar field and photons can give rise to a modified Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). The coupling induces a mixing between chameleon particles and the CMB photons when they pass through the magnetic field of a galaxy cluster. Both the intensity and the polarization of the radiation are modified. The degree of modification depends strongly on the properties of the galaxy cluster such as magnetic field strength and electron number density. Existing SZ measurements of the Coma cluster enable us to pla…
Massive Population III stars from 140 - 260 solar masses ended their lives as pair-instability supernovae (PISNe), the most energetic thermonuclear explosions in the universe. Detection of these explosions could directly constrain the primordial IMF for the first time, which is key to the formation of the first galaxies, early cosmological reionization, and the chemical enrichment of the primeval IGM. We present radiation hydrodynamical calculations of Pop III PISN light curves and spectra performed with the RAGE code. We find that the initial radiation pulse due to shock breakout from the sur…
Here I discuss the conversion of relic gravitons into photons in large scale cosmological magnetic fields. It is shown that the conversion probability is quite large at the post recombination epoch with a rather large density of formed photons. The produced electromagnetic radiation could make a substantial contribution to the cosmic extragalactic background light and even explain the cosmic x ray background excess.
We compute the primordial mirror helium He' mass fraction emerging from Big Bang nucleosynthesis in the mirror sector of particles in the presence of kinetic mixing between photons and mirror photons. We explore the kinetic mixing parameter (epsilon) values relevant for cosmology and which are also currently probed by the dark matter direct detection experiments. In particular, we find that for epsilon \sim 10^{-9}, as suggested by the DAMA/Libra and other experiments, a large He' mass fraction (Y_{He'} \approx 90%) is produced. Such a large value of the primordial He' mass fraction will have …
We develop a primordial black hole (PBH) production mechanism, deriving non-Gaussian tails from interacting quantum fields during early universe inflation. The multi-field potential landscape may contain relatively flat directions, as a result of energetically favorable adjustments of fields coupled to the inflaton. Such additional fields do not contribute to CMB fluctuations given a sufficient large-scale decay, related to a gap in the critical exponents computed using stochastic methods. Along such directions transverse to the inflaton, the field makes rare jumps to large values. Mixing with…
We calculate the frequency dependence of gravitational wave background arising at second order of cosmological perturbation theory due to mixing of tensor and scalar modes. The calculation of the induced gravitational background is performed for two special cases: for the power spectrum of scalar perturbations which has a peak at some scale and for the scalar spectrum predicted by the inflationary model with the running mass potential. We show that the amplitudes of the induced gravitational background, in the frequency region $\sim 10^{-3} - 10^3 $Hz, are effectively constrained by results of…
In this paper we examine how primordial non-Gaussianity contributes to nonlinear perturbative orders in the expansion of the density field at large scales in the matter dominated era. General Relativity is an intrinsically nonlinear theory, establishing a nonlinear relation between the metric and the density field. Representing the metric perturbations with the curvature perturbation zeta, it is known that nonlinearity produces effective non-Gaussian terms in the nonlinear perturbations of the matter density field, even if the primordial zeta is Gaussian. Here we generalise these results to th…
We investigate the features generated by a sharp turn along the inflationary trajectory in a two-field model of Dirac-Born-Infeld inflation, where one of the fields is heavy. Distinct features are generated by two different effects: the mixing of the light and heavy modes during the turn, on the one hand, and the resonance between the oscillations along the heavy direction after the turn, on the other hand. Contrary to models with standard kinetic terms, the resonance effect is not strongly suppressed because the action contains derivative interactions. Working in the potential basis, we study…
We study a simple extension of quasi-single field inflation in which the inflaton interacts with multiple extra massive scalars known as isocurvatons. Due to the breaking of time translational invariance by the inflaton background, the theory includes kinetic mixings among the inflaton and isocurvatons. These mixings give rise to novel new features in the primordial non-Gaussianities of the scalar curvature perturbation. A noteworthy feature is the amplitude of the squeezed bispectrum can grow nearly as $(k_s/k_l)^{-3}$ while oscillating as ${\rm \cosγ\log}(k_s/k_l)$, where $k_s/k_l$ is the ra…

We study the evolution of primordial magnetic fields in an expanding cosmic plasma. For this purpose we present a comprehensive theoretical model to consider the evolution of MHD turbulence that can be used over a wide range of physical conditions, including cosmological and astrophysical applications. We model different types of decaying cosmic MHD turbulence in the expanding universe and characterize the large-scale magnetic fields in such a medium. Direct numerical simulations of freely decaying MHD turbulence are performed for different magnetogenesis scenarios: magnetic fields generated d…
Neutrino oscillations and mean-field effects considerably enrich the phenomenology of neutrino evolution in the early Universe. Taking into account these effects, most notably the neutrino self-interaction mean-field contribution, we revisit the problem of the evolution of primordial neutrino asymmetries including for the first time the complete expression for collisions, which describe scattering and annihilations with electrons/positrons and reactions among (anti)neutrinos. We show that a generalisation of the adiabatic transfer of averaged oscillations (ATAO) scheme, a numerical method prev…
The pseudoscalar-photon mixing in presence of large scale magnetic field induces polarization in light from distant cosmological sources. We study the effect of these pseudoscalars or axion like particles (ALPs) on Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR) and constrain the product of mixing strength $g_ϕ$ times background magnetic field $B$. The background magnetic field has been assumed to be primordial and we assume large scale correlations with the correlation length of 1Mpc. We use WMAP seven year foreground reduced polarization and temperature data to constrain pseudoscalar-photon mix…
We study primordial non-gaussianity in supersolid inflation. The dynamics of supersolid is formulated in terms of an effective field theory based on four scalar fields with a shift symmetric action minimally coupled with gravity. In the scalar sector, there are two phonon-like excitations with a kinetic mixing stemming from the completely spontaneous breaking of diffeomorphism. In a squeezed configuration, $f_{\text{NL}}$ of scalar perturbations is angle dependent and not proportional to slow-roll parameters showing a blunt violation of the Maldacena consistency relation. Contrary to solid inf…
We present the results of three-dimensional simulations of quasar polarizations in the presence of pseudoscalar-photon mixing in the intergalactic medium. The intergalactic magnetic field is assumed to be uncorrelated in wave vector space but correlated in real space. Such a field may be obtained if its origin is primordial. Furthermore we assume that the quasars, located at cosmological distances, have negligible initial polarization. In the presence of pseudoscalar-photon mixing we show, through a direct comparison with observations, that this may explain the observed large scale alignments …
Magnetic fields appear to be a generic feature of the early universe and are a natural source of secondary CMB non-Gaussianity. In recent years the statistical nature of the stresses of a primordial magnetic field has been well studied. In this paper we confirm and extend these studies at one- and two-point level, and present analytical results for a wide range of power-law spectra. We also consider two non-power law cases of interest: a blue spectrum with an extended damping tail on small scales, which could be generated by the non-linear mixing of density and vorticity; and a red spectrum wi…
Silk damping in the early Universe, before and during recombination, erases anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) on small scales. This power, which disappears from anisotropies, appears in the monopole as y-type, i-type and μ-type distortions. The observation of the CMB spectral distortions will thus make available to us the information about the primordial power spectrum on scales corresponding to the comoving wavenumbers $8< k < 10^4 Mpc^{-1}$ increasing our total view of inflation, when combined with CMB anisotropies, to span 17 e-folds. These distortions can be understood …
Silk damping of primordial small-scale perturbations in the photon-baryon fluid due to diffusion of photons inevitably creates spectral distortions in the CMB. With the proposed CMB experiment PIXIE it might become possible to measure these distortions and thereby constrain the primordial power spectrum at comoving wavenumbers 50 Mpc^{-1} < k < 10^4 Mpc^{-1}. Since primordial fluctuations in the CMB on these scales are completely erased by Silk damping, these distortions may provide the only way to shed light on otherwise unobservable aspects of inflationary physics. A consistent treatment of …
Primordial magnetic fields in the dark sector can be transferred to magnetic fields in the visible sector due to a gauge kinetic mixing term. We show that the transfer occurs when the evolution of magnetic fields is dominated by dissipation due to finite electric conductivity, and does not occur at later times if the magnetic fields evolve according to magnetohydrodynamics scaling laws. The efficiency of the transfer is suppressed by not only the gauge kinetic mixing coupling but also the ratio between the large electric conductivity and the typical momentum of the magnetic fields. We find tha…
In this work, we present the first experimental upper limits on the presence of stochastic ultra-high-frequency gravitational waves. We exclude gravitational waves in the frequency bands from $(2.7 - 14)\times10^{14}~$Hz and $(5 - 12)\times10^{18}~$Hz down to a characteristic amplitude of $h_c^{\rm min}\approx6\times 10^{-26}$ and $h_c^{\rm min}\approx 5\times 10^{-28}$ at $95~$% confidence level, respectively. To obtain these results, we used data from existing facilities that have been constructed and operated with the aim of detecting WISPs (Weakly Interacting Slim Particles), pointing out …
We study the background dynamics and primordial perturbation in $α$-attractor-type double inflation. The model is composed of two minimally coupled scalar fields, where each of the fields has a potential of the $α$-attractor type. We find that the background trajectory in this double inflation model is given by two almost straight lines connected with a turn in the field space. With this simple background, we can classify the property of the perturbations generated in this double inflation model just depending on whether the turn occurs before the horizon exit for the mode corresponding to the…
