We summarize the results from numerical simulations of mass outflows from AGN. We focus on simulations of outflows driven by radiation from large-scale inflows. We discuss the properties of these outflows in the context of the so-called AGN feedback problem. Our main conclusion is that this type of outflows are efficient in removing matter but inefficient in removing energy.
The actual mechanism(s) powering galactic outflows in active galactic nuclei (AGN) is still a matter of debate. Large-scale, broad outflows are common in active galaxies. In systems where star formation coexists with an AGN, it is unclear yet the role that both play on driving the outflows. In this work we present three-dimensional radiative-cooling MHD simulations of the formation of these outflows, considering the feedback from both the AGN and supernovae-driven winds. The CGM is also found to contain substantial amounts of metals and dust, which require some transport mechanism. We have carried out an extensive X-ray spectral analysis of a sample of galaxies exhibiting molecular outflows (MOX sample), to characterize the X-ray properties and investigate the effect of AGN on the dynamical properties of the molecular outflows. We find that the X-ray bolometric correction $(L_{2-10\rm keV}/L_{\rm AGN})$ of these sources ranges from $\sim10^{-4.5}$ to $10^{-0.5}$, with $\sim 70\%$ of the sources below $10^{-2}$, implying a weak X-ray emission relative to the AGN bolometric luminosity ($L_{\rm AGN}$). We investigate the connection between ionized gas outflows and star formation activity using a large sample of type 1 and 2 AGNs with far-IR detections or star formation rate (SFR) estimates. The strength of ionized gas outflows, measured by the velocity dispersion and velocity shift of the \OIII\ emission line, clearly shows a correlation with SFR. We perform simulations to study the effects of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) radiation and wind feedback on the properties of slowly rotating accretion flow at parsec scale. We find that when only radiative feedback is considered, outflows can be produced by the radiation pressure due to Thomson scattering. The mass flux of outflow is comparable to that of inflow. We present galaxy-integrated spectra of 89 X-ray AGN (Lx=10^42-10^45 erg/s), for which we observed [O III] (z=1.1-1.7) or Halpha emission (z=0.6-1.1). Recent observations and simulations have revealed the dominance of secular processes over mergers in driving the growth of both supermassive black holes (SMBH) and galaxy evolution. Here we obtain narrowband imaging of AGN powered outflows in a sample of $12$ galaxies with disk-dominated morphologies, whose history is assumed to be merger-free. First, we cross-correlate a list of 94 "bona fide" AGN outflows with the most complete and updated repository of IceCube neutrinos currently publicly available, assembled by us for this purpose. Using observations from the first two years of the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey, we study 13 AGN-driven outflows detected from a sample of 67 X-ray, IR and/or optically-selected AGN at $z \sim 2$. The AGN have bolometric luminosities of $\sim10^{44}-10^{46} ~\mathrm{erg~s^{-1}}$, including both quasars and moderate-luminosity AGN. We have obtained Keck NIR spectroscopy of a sample of nine M$_\star$ $<$ 10$^{10}$ M$_\odot$ dwarf galaxies to confirm AGN activity and the presence of galaxy-wide, AGN-driven outflows through coronal line (CL) emission. We find strong CL detections in 5/9 galaxies (55$\%$) with line ratios incompatible with shocks, confirming the presence of AGN in these galaxies. Similar CL detection rates are found in larger samples of more massive galaxies hosting type 1 and 2 AGN.
