Using a constrained formalism for Einstein equations in Dirac gauge, we propose to compute excised quasistationary initial data for black hole spacetimes in full general relativity. Vacuum spacetime settings are numerically constructed by using the isolated horizon formalism; we especially tackle the conformal metric part of our equations, assuming global stationarity. We show that a no-boundary treatment can be used on the horizon for the equation related to the conformal metric. We relate this finding to previous suggestions in the literature, and use our results to assess the widely used conformally flat approximation for computing black hole initial data.
We present a numerical work aiming at the computation of excised initial data for black hole spacetimes in full general relativity, using Dirac gauge in the context of a constrained formalism for the Einstein equations. Introducing the isolated horizon formalism for black hole excision, we especially solve the non-conformally flat part of the equations, and assess the boundary condition problem for this part. In the stationary single black hole case, we present and justify a no-boundary treatment on the black hole horizon. We compare the data obtained with the well-known analytic Kerr solution…
The scattering process of a dynamic perturbation impinging on a draining-tub model of an acoustic black hole is numerically solved in the time domain. Analogies with real black holes of General Relativity are explored by using recently developed mathematical tools involving finite elements methods, excision techniques, and constrained evolution schemes for strongly hyperbolic systems. In particular it is shown that superradiant scattering of a quasi-monochromatic wavepacket can produce strong amplification of the signal, offering the possibility of a significant extraction of rotational energy…
We experiment with several new modifications for the Baumgarte-Shapiro-Shibata-Nakamura (BSSN) formulation of the Einstein field equations and demonstrate how these modifications affect the stability of numerical black hole evolution calculations. With these modifications, we evolve both single non-rotating excised Kerr-Schild black holes and punctured binary black holes, and obtain accurate and stable simulations.
We study in some detail the "extended Kerr-Schild" formulation of general relativity, which decomposes the gauge-independent degrees of freedom of a generic metric into two arbitrary functions and the choice of a flat background tetrad. We recast Einstein's equations and spacetime curvatures in the extended Kerr-Schild form and discuss their properties, illustrated with simple examples.
We revisit the Kerr metric in Boyer-Lindquist coordinates and construct the corresponding class of nonstandard solutions of Einstein's equations. These solutions can be used to describe the outer part of spiral galaxies without assuming dark matter.
A procedure for evolving hyperbolic systems of equations on compact computational domains with no boundary conditions was recently described in [arXiv:1905.08657]. In that proposal, the computational grid is expanded in spacelike directions with respect to the outermost characteristic and initial data is imposed on the expanded grid boundary. We discuss a related method that removes the need for imposing boundary conditions: the computational domain is excised along a direction spacelike with respect to the innermost going characteristic. We compare the two methods, and provide example evoluti…
In the present work, the spin-coefficient formalism of Newman and Penrose is used to formulate geometric constraints for the existence of Kerr-Schild groups, i.e. continuous groups of generalized Kerr-Schild transformations. In addition, by characterizing the geometric structure of the deformed Einstein tensor of the generalized Kerr-Schild class, restrictions are imposed on the existence of apparent conservation laws in generic spacetimes, which are defined via considering special Kerr-Schild currents whose associated Kerr-Schild vector fields coincide with timelike Killing vector fields of p…
We discuss a recently presented boosted Kerr black hole solution which had already been used by other authors. This boosted metric is based on wrong assumptions regarding asymptotic inertial observers and moreover the performed boost is not a proper Lorentz transformation. This note aims to clarify some of the issues when boosting black holes and the necessary care in order to interpret them. As it is wrongly claimed that the presented boosted Kerr metric is of Bondi-Sachs type, we recall out some of the necessary requirements and difficulties, when the casting the Kerr metric into a metric wi…
In this paper we study some features of the Kerr metric both from an analytic and a visual point of view by performing accurate raytracing in various situations. We focus on features that are unique to the maximal analytic extension of the Kerr metric as compared to that of the Schwarzschild or even the Reissner-Nordström one. A large number of new, yet underexplored phenomena appear, especially regarding the structure of bounded null geodesics and the aspect of the negative gravity regions whose visual characteristics are shown both from outside and inside it.
The exact (closed form) solutions of the equations of motion in the theory of general relativity that describe motion of test particle and photon in Kerr and Kerr-(anti) de Sitter spacetimes all involve the multivariable hypergeometric function of Lauricella $F_D$: Kraniotis [Class. Quantum Grav. {\bf 21} 2004, 4743; Class. Quantum Grav. {\bf 22} 2005, 4391; Class. Quantum Grav. {\bf 24} 2007, 1775]. The domain of variables ${\cal D}_n$ of the corresponding function depends on the first integrals of motion associated with the isometries of the Kerr-(anti) de Sitter metric and Carter's constant…
Although the Kerr solution is common to many gravity theories, its perturbations are different in different theories. Hence, perturbed Kerr black holes can probe deviations from General Relativity.
The pseudo-complex General Relativity (pc-GR) is further considered. A new projection method is proposed. It is shown, that the pc-GR introduces automatically terms into the system which can be interpreted as dark energy. The modified pseudo-complex Schwarzschild solution is investigated. The dark energy part is treated as a liquid and possible solutions are discussed. As a consequence, the collapse of a large stellar mass into a singularity at $r=0$ is avoided and no event-horizon is formed. Thus, black holes don't exist. The resulting object can be viewed as a gray star. It contains no singu…
The paper presents equations determining the particle spin evolution in the post-Newtonian approximation in the problem of motion of two mass and spin possessing particles. The equations are derived with the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann method from the condition of metric tensor symmetry. The consideration uses the condition of coordinate harmonicity and the metric coincidence nearby the particles with expansions of the Kerr solution written in the harmonic coordinates. For gyroscopes on satellites Gravity Probe B, for example, the equations yield a deviation of the axis of revolution, which is, f…
A general Hamiltonian approach to black hole thermodynamics is used to study entropy and conserved charges for Kerr-AdS solutions in general relativity. These thermodynamic variables are first consistently defined by choosing suitable boundary conditions, and then, they are shown to satisfy the first law of black hole dynamics
Black hole thermodynamics of the Kerr-AdS spacetime in three-dimensional general relativity is analyzed using a Hamiltonian approach. The values of the conserved charges and entropy, obtained by a proper treatment of the AdS asymptotic conditions, are shown to satisfy the first law of black hole dynamics.
The complete solution of the vacuum Kerr-Schild equations in general relativity is presented, including the space-times with a curved background metric. The corresponding result for a flat background has been obtained by Kerr.
Recent measurements of gravitational-wave ringdown following the merger of binary black holes raise the prospect of precision black hole spectroscopy in the near future. To perform the most sensitive tests of the nature of black holes using ringdown measurements, it is critical to compute the deviations to the spectrum of black holes in particular extensions of relativity. These spectral shifts are also needed to interpret any violations of the predictions of relativity that may be detected during ringdown. Here we present a first step towards computing the shifts to the spectrum of Kerr black…
We derive the Teukolsky equation for perturbations of a Kerr spacetime when the spacetime metric is written in either ingoing or outgoing Kerr-Schild form. We also write explicit formulae for setting up the initial data for the Teukolsky equation in the time domain in terms of a three metric and an extrinsic curvature. The motivation of this work is to have in place a formalism to study the evolution in the ``close limit'' of two recently proposed solutions to the initial value problem in general relativity that are based on Kerr-Schild slicings. A perturbative formalism in horizon penetrating…
Relativistic tidal equations are formulated with respect to the rest frame of a central gravitational source and their solutions are studied. The existence of certain relativistic critical tidal currents are thereby elucidated. Specifically, observers that are spatially at rest in the exterior Kerr spacetime are considered in detail; in effect, these fiducial observers define the rest frame of the Kerr source. The general tidal equations for the free motion of test particles are worked out with respect to the Kerr background. The analytic solutions of these equations are investigated and the e…
We derive an exact radiating Kerr-Newman like black hole solution, with constant curvature $R=R_0$ imposed, to {\it metric} $f(R)$ gravity via complex transformations suggested by Newman-Janis. This generates a geometry which is precisely that of radiating Kerr-Newman-de Sitter / anti-de Sitter with the $f(R)$ gravity contributing an $R_0$ cosmological-like term. The structure of three horizon-like surfaces, {\it viz.} timelike limit surface, apparent horizon and event horizon, are determined. We demonstrate the existence of an additional cosmological horizon, in $f(R)$ gravity model, apart fr…
We present results of 3D numerical simulations using a finite difference code featuring fixed mesh refinement (FMR), in which a subset of the computational domain is refined in space and time. We apply this code to a series of test cases including a robust stability test, a nonlinear gauge wave and an excised Schwarzschild black hole in an evolving gauge. We find that the mesh refinement results are comparable in accuracy, stability and convergence to unigrid simulations with the same effective resolution. At the same time, the use of FMR reduces the computational resources needed to obtain a …
In the context of Lorentz-Finsler spacetime theories the relativity principle holds at a spacetime point if the indicatrix (observer space) is homogeneous. We point out that in four spacetime dimensions there are just three kinematical models which respect an exact form of the relativity principle and for which all observers agree on the spacetime volume. They have necessarily affine sphere indicatrices. For them every observer which looks at a flash of light emitted by a point would observe, respectively, an expanding (a) sphere, (b) tetrahedron, or (c) cone, with barycenter at the point. The…
We analyse the expression for the mass of a stationary axisymmetric configuration in general relativity obtained in our previous work [1]. From the generality of our formula and its incompatibility with the corresponding expression in Kerr space-time we argue that a stationary equilibrium distribution of a real matter cannot be a source of the Kerr metric.
Metrics representing black holes in General Relativity may exhibit naked singularities for certain values of their parameters. This is the case for super-extremal ($J^2 > M>0$) Kerr and super-extremal ($|Q|>M>0$) Reissner-Nördstrom spacetimes, and also for the negative mass Schwarzschild spacetime. We review our recent work where we show that these nakedly singular spacetimes are unstable under linear gravitational perturbations, a result that supports the cosmic censorship conjecture, and also that the inner stationary region beyond the inner horizon of a Kerr black hole ($J^2 <M$) is linearl…
Repulsive gravity is not very popular in physics. However, one comes across it in at least two main occurrences in general relativity: in the negative-$r$ region of Kerr spacetime, and as the result of the gravitational interaction between matter and antimatter, when the latter is assumed to be CPT-transformed matter. Here we show how these two independent developments of general relativity are perfectly consistent in predicting gravitational repulsion and how the above Kerr negative-$r$ region can be interpreted as the habitat of antimatter. As a consequence, matter particles traveling along …
In this paper we study the Hawking radiation in Reissner-Nordstrom and Kerr-Newman black holes by considering the charge to be the function of radial coordinate.
As a first step towards the calculation of waveform of Extreme Mass Ratio Inspirals for Modified Gravity theories, we calculate the orbital frequencies of a Small Compact Object inspiralling into a super massive blackhole for a Nonlocal gravity model. The small compact object moves along an orbit which can be approximated to a geodesic of the background spacetime due to large mass ratio of central blackhole to Small Compact Object. In General Relativity, the fundamental orbital frequencies $Ω_r,\;Ω_θ$ and $Ω_ϕ$ can be calculated by solving geodesic equations of the Kerr metric. If we formulate…
The observation of the bending of light by mass, now known as gravitational lensing, was key in establishing general relativity as one of the pillars of modern physics. In the past couple of decades, there has been increasing interest in using gravitational lensing to test general relativity beyond the weak deflection limit. Black holes and neutron stars produce the strong gravitational fields needed for such tests. For a rotating compact object, the distinction between prograde and retrograde photon trajectories becomes important. In this paper, we explore subtleties that arise in interpretin…
We present the first simulations of non-headon (grazing) collisions of binary black holes in which the black hole singularities have been excised from the computational domain. Initially two equal mass black holes $m$ are separated a distance $\approx10m$ and with impact parameter $\approx2m$. Initial data are based on superposed, boosted (velocity $\approx0.5c$) solutions of single black holes in Kerr-Schild coordinates. Both rotating and non-rotating black holes are considered. The excised regions containing the singularities are specified by following the dynamics of apparent horizons. Evol…
Considerable attention has recently focused on gravity theories obtained by extending general relativity with additional scalar, vector, or tensor degrees of freedom. In this paper, we show that the black-hole solutions of these theories are essentially indistinguishable from those of general relativity. Thus, we conclude that a potential observational verification of the Kerr metric around an astrophysical black hole cannot, in and of itself, be used to distinguish between these theories. On the other hand, it remains true that detection of deviations from the Kerr metric will signify the nee…
An electromagnetic analog of the Kerr-Newman solution in general relativity is derived, based on Minkowski's formulation for electromagnetic fields in moving media. The equivalent system is a distribution of charges and currents largely localized within a spinning disk of radius a. This occurs in a rotating medium of inhomogeneous index of refraction and "frame dragging" at exactly half the angular velocity of the electrical charge.
The Newman-Penrose formalism may be used in numerical relativity to extract coordinate-invariant information about gravitational radiation emitted in strong-field dynamical scenarios. The main challenge in doing so is to identify a null tetrad appropriately adapted to the simulated geometry such that Newman-Penrose quantities computed relative to it have an invariant physical meaning. In black hole perturbation theory, the Teukolsky formalism uses such adapted tetrads, those which differ only perturbatively from the background Kinnersley tetrad. At late times, numerical simulations of astrophy…
We construct initial data sets which satisfy the vacuum constraint equa- tions of General Relativity with positive cosmologigal constant. More pre- silely, we deform initial data with ends asymptotic to Schwarzschild-de Sitter to obtain non-trivial initial data with exactly Kerr-de Sitter ends. The method is inspired from Corvino's gluing method. We obtain here a extension of a previous result for the time-symmetric case by Chruściel and Pollack.
We compare and contrast the emission of gravitational waves and waveforms for the recently established "helicoidal-drifting-sequence" of a test particle around a Kerr black hole with the publicly available waveform templates of numerical-relativity. The merger of two black holes of comparable mass are considered. We outline a final smooth merging of the test particle into the final Kerr black hole. We find a surprising and unexpected agreement between the two treatments if we adopt, for the mass of the particle and the Kerr black hole a Newtonian-center-of-mass description, and for the Kerr bl…
The Teukolsky formalism of black hole perturbation theory describes weak gravitational radiation generated by a mildly dynamical hole near equilibrium. A particular null tetrad of the background Kerr geometry, due to Kinnersley, plays a singularly important role within this formalism. In order to apply the rich physical intuition of Teukolsky's approach to the results of fully non-linear numerical simulations, one must approximate this Kinnersley tetrad using raw numerical data, with no a priori knowledge of a background. This paper addresses this issue by identifying the directions of the tet…
In the context of the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity, we obtain the tetrad and the torsion fields of the stationary axisymmetric Kerr spacetime. It is shown that, in the slow rotation and weak field approximations, the axial-vector torsion plays the role of the gravitomagnetic component of the gravitational field, and is thus the responsible for the Lense-Thirring effect.
According to the Cosmic Censorship Conjecture, all the singularities produced by the collapsing matter must be hidden behind an event horizon. In 4D general relativity, this implies that the final product of the collapse is a Kerr-Newman black hole. Here I consider the possibility that the Cosmic Censorship Conjecture can be violated. I present the results of some numerical simulations of the accretion process onto Kerr black holes (objects with event horizon) and Kerr super-spinars (fast-rotating objects without event horizon). This is a preliminary study to investigate how the Cosmic Censors…
This work derives the elements of classical Einstein Cartan theory (EC) from classical general relativity (GR) in two ways. (I) Derive discrete versions of torsion (translational holonomy) and the spin torsion field equation of EC from one Kerr solution in GR. (II) Derive the field equations of EC as the continuum limit of a distribution of many Kerr masses in classical GR. The convergence computations employ epsilon delta arguments, and are not as rigorous as convergence in Sobolev norm. Inequality constraints needed for convergence restrict the limits from continuing to an infinitesimal leng…
A solution of Einstein's vacuum field equation is derived that describes a general boosted Kerr black hole relative to a Lorentz frame at future null infinity. The metric contains five independent parameters -- mass $m$, rotation $ω$, boost parameter $v/c$ and the boost direction defined by $(n_1,n_2,n_3)$ satisfying $(n_1)^2+(n_2)^2+(n_3)^2=1$ -- and reduces to the Kerr black hole when the boost parameter is zero and $n_1=1$. The solution describes the most general configuration that an astrophysical black hole must have. The black hole rotates about the $z$-axis with angular momentum proport…
This dissertation aims at studying the braneworld models in the context proposed by Randall and Sundrum. The focus is on the spin-0 perturbations in the Kerr space-time as a 4-dimensional braneworld. The work deals the main aspects of Einstein General Relativity as well as perturbations of black holes metrics. We also review the Randall-Sundrum models and their motivations and attempts to describe braneworld black holes. In the end the Kerr-Randall-Sundrum black string scalar perturbation and superradiance are obtained.
General Relativity's Kerr metric is famous for its many symmetries which are responsible for the separability of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation governing the geodesic motion and of the Teukolsky equation for wave dynamics. We show that there is a unique stationary and axisymmetric Newtonian gravitational potential that has exactly the same dual property of separable point-particle and wave motion equations. This `Kerr metric analogue' of Newtonian gravity is none other than Euler's 18th century problem of two-fixed gravitating centers.
In the framework of parallelism general relativity (PGR), the Dirac particle spin precession in the rotational gravitational field is studied. In terms of the equivalent tetrad of Kerr frame, we investigate the torsion axial-vector spin coupling in PGR. In the case of the weak field and slow rotation approximation, we obtain that the torsion axial-vector has the dipole-like structure, but different from the gravitomagnetic field, which indicates that the choice of the Kerr tetrad will influence on the physics interpretation of the axial-vector spin coupling.
We present the whole class of Gaussian coordinate systems for the Kerr metric. This is achieved through the uses of the relationship between Gaussian observers and the relativistic Hamilton-Jacobi equation. We analyze the completeness of this coordinate system. In the appendix we present the equivalent JEK formulation of General Relativity -- the so-called quasi-Maxwellian equations -- which acquires a simpler form in the Gaussian coordinate system. We show how this set of equations can be used to obtain the internal metric of the Schwazschild solution, as a simple example. We suggest that thi…
The spacetime singularities in classical general relativity are inevitable, which are also predicated by the celebrated singularity theorems. However, it is general belief that singularities do not exist in the nature and they are the limitations of the general relativity. In the absence of a well defined quantum gravity, models of regular black holes have been studied. We employ probability distribution inspired mass function $m(r)$ to replace Kerr black hole mass $M$ to present a nonsingular rotating black hole that is identified asymptotically ($r \gg k$, $k>0$ constant) exactly as the Kerr…
We investigate the motion of spinning test bodies in General Relativity. By means of a multipolar approximation method for extended test bodies we derive the equations of motion, and classify the orbital motion of pole-dipole test bodies in the equatorial plane of the Kerr geometry. An exact expression for the periastron shift of a spinning test body is given. Implications of test body spin corrections are studied and compared with the results obtained by means of other approximation schemes.
In this paper we compute the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) mass, the angular momentum and the charge of the Kerr black hole solution in the scalar-tensor-vector gravity theory [known as the Kerr-MOG (modified-gravity) black hole configuration]; we study in detail as well several properties of this solution such as the stationary limit surface, the event horizon, and the ergosphere, and conclude that the new deformation parameter $α$ affects the geometry of the Kerr-MOG black hole significantly in addition to the ADM mass and spin parameters. Moreover, the ADM mass and black hole event horizon de…
Astrophysical black hole candidates are thought to be the Kerr black holes of general relativity. However, macroscopic deviations from the Kerr background are predicted by a number of scenarios beyond Einstein's gravity. X-ray reflection spectroscopy can be a powerful tool to probe the strong gravity region of these objects and test the Kerr black hole hypothesis. Here I briefly review the state of the art of this line of research and I present some constraints on possible deviations from the Kerr metric obtained with the new X-ray reflection model relxill_nk and XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and Swift …
We find an exact spherically symmetric magnetically charged black hole solution to general relativity (GR) coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) with an appropriate Lagrangian density. In turn, starting with this spherical black hole as a seed metric, we construct a rotating spacetime, a modification of Kerr black hole, using the revised Newman-Janis algorithm that depends on mass, spin, and a NED parameter $g$. We find an exact expression for thermodynamic quantities of the black holes like the mass, Hawking temperature, entropy, heat capacity, and free energy expressed in terms of horiz…
Classical invariants of General Relativity can be used to approximate the entropy of the gravitational field. In this work, we study two proposed estimators based on scalars constructed out from the Weyl tensor, in Kerr spacetime. In order to evaluate Clifton, Ellis and Tavakol's proposal, we calculate the gravitational energy density, gravitational temperature, and gravitational entropy of the Kerr spacetime. We find that in the frame we consider, Clifton et al.'s estimator does not reproduce the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of a Kerr black hole. The results are compared with previous estimates…
Singularities in the metric of the classical solutions to the Einstein equations (Schwarzschild, Kerr, Reissner -- Nordström and Kerr -- Newman solutions) lead to appearance of generalized functions in the Einstein tensor that are not usually taken into consideration. The generalized functions can be of a more complex nature than the Dirac $\d$-function. To study them, a technique has been used based on a limiting solution sequence. The solutions are shown to satisfy the Einstein equations everywhere, if the energy-momentum tensor has a relevant singular addition of non-electromagnetic origin.…
Black hole solutions in general relativity come with pathologies such as singularity and mass inflation instability, which are believed to be cured by a yet-to-be-found quantum theory of gravity. Without such consistent description, one may model theory-agnostic phenomenological black holes that bypass the aforesaid issues. These so-called regular black holes are extensively studied in the literature using parameterized modifications over the black hole solutions of general relativity. However, since there exist several ways to model such black holes, it is important to study the consistency a…
In the first part of this thesis, Kerr-Schild metrics and extended Kerr-Schild metrics are analyzed in the context of higher dimensional general relativity. Employing the higher dimensional generalizations of the Newman-Penrose formalism and the algebraic classification of spacetimes based on the existence and multiplicity of Weyl aligned null directions, we establish various geometrical properties of the Kerr-Schild congruences, determine compatible Weyl types and in the expanding case discuss the presence of curvature singularities. We also present known exact solutions admitting these Kerr-…
We solve the elliptic equations associated with the Hamiltonian and momentum constraints, corresponding to a system composed of two black holes with arbitrary linear and angular momentum. These new solutions are based on a Kerr-Schild spacetime slicing which provides more physically realistic solutions than the initial data based on conformally flat metric/maximal slicing methods. The singularity/inner boundary problems are circumvented by a new technique that allows the use of an elliptic solver on a Cartesian grid where no points are excised, simplifying enormously the numerical problem.
We obtain a geometrical condition on vacuum, stationary, asymptotically flat spacetimes which is necessary and sufficient for the spacetime to be locally isometric to Kerr. Namely, we prove a theorem stating that an asymptotically flat, stationary, vacuum spacetime such that the so-called Killing form is an eigenvector of the self-dual Weyl tensor must be locally isometric to Kerr. Asymptotic flatness is a fundamental hypothesis of the theorem, as we demonstrate by writing down the family of metrics obtained when this requirement is dropped. This result indicates why the Kerr metric plays such…
We present a 2+1 decomposition of the vacuum initial conditions in general relativity. For a constant mean curvature one of the momentum constraints decouples in quasi isotropic coordinates and it can be solved by quadrature. The remaining momentum constraints are written in the form of the tangential Cauchy-Riemann equation. Under additional assumptions its solutions can be written in terms of integrals of known functions. We show how to obtain initial data with a marginally outer trapped surface. A generalization of the Kerr data is presented.
