We study the full counting statistics of charge transport through a quantum dot tunnel-coupled to one normal and one superconducting lead with a large superconducting gap. As function of the level detuning, there is a crossover from a regime with strong superconducting correlations in the quantum dot to a regime in which the proximity effect on the quantum dot is suppressed. We analyze the current fluctuations of this crossover in the shot-noise regime. In particular, we predict that the full counting statistics changes from Poissonian with charge 2e, typical for Cooper pairs, to Poissonian with charge e, when the superconducting proximity effect is present. Thus, the onset of the superconducting proximity effect is revealed by the reduction of the Fano factor from 2 to 1.
We present a theory of non-equilibrium superconducting proximity effect in an interacting quantum dot induced by a time-dependent tunnel coupling between dot and a superconducting lead. The proximity effect, that is established when the driving frequency fulfills a gate-voltage-dependent resonance condition, can be probed through the tunneling current into a weakly-coupled normal lead. Furthermore, we propose to generate and manipulate coherent superpositions of quantum-dot states with electron numbers differing by two, by applying pulsed oscillatory variations to the couplings between dot and…
We investigate electronic transport in a three-terminal hybrid system, composed by an interacting quantum dot tunnel coupled to one superconducting, one ferromagnetic, and one normal lead. Despite the tendency of the charging energy to suppress the superconducting proximity effect when the quantum dot is in equilibrium, the non-equilibrium proximity effect can give rise to a large Andreev current. The presence of the ferromagnet can lead to a finite spin accumulation on the dot. We find that the interplay of the Andreev current and spin accumulation can generate a pure spin current, with no as…
We study the electric and thermoelectric transport properties of correlated quantum dots coupled to two ferromagnetic leads and one superconducting electrode. Transport through such hybrid devices depends on the interplay of ferromagnetic-contact induced exchange field, superconducting proximity effect and correlations leading to the Kondo effect. We consider the limit of large superconducting gap. The system can be then modeled by an effective Hamiltonian with a particle-non-conserving term describing the creation and annihilation of Cooper pairs. By means of the full density-matrix numerical…
The superconducting proximity effect has been the focus of significant research efforts over many years and has recently attracted renewed interest as the basis of topologically non-trivial states in materials with a large spin orbit interaction, with protected boundary states useful for quantum information technologies. However, spectroscopy of these states is challenging because of the limited spatial and energetic control of conventional tunnel barriers. Here, we report electronic spectroscopy measurements of the proximity gap in a semiconducting indium arsenide (InAs) nanowire (NW) segment…
The Andreev transport through a quantum dot coupled to two external ferromagnetic leads and one superconducting lead is studied theoretically by means of the real-time diagrammatic technique in the sequential and cotunneling regimes. We show that the tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) of the Andreev current displays a nontrivial dependence on the bias voltage and the level detuning, and can be described by analytical formulas in the zero temperature limit. The cotunneling processes lead to a strong modification of the TMR, which is most visible in the Coulomb blockade regime. We find a zero-bias a…
We study the influence of the proximity-induced pairing on electronic version of the Dicke effect in a heterostructure, comprising three quantum dots vertically coupled between the metallic and superconducting leads. We discuss a feasible experimental procedure for detecting the narrow/broad (subradiant/superradiant) contributions by means of the subgap Andreev spectroscopy. In the Kondo regime and for small energy level detuning the Dicke effect is manifested in the differential conductance.
Interaction of bound states with a singular continuous spectrum is studied using a one dimensional Fibonacci quasicrystal as a prototype example. Single level quantum dots are attached from a side to a subset of atomic sites of the quasiperiodic chain. The proximity of the dots to the chain is modeled by introducing a tunnel hopping between a dot and the backbone. It is shown that, depending upon the proximity of the side coupled dot, the spectrum of an infinite quasiperiodic chain can display radical changes from its purely one dimensional characteristics. Absolutely continuous parts in the s…
We demonstrate the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in single-layer graphene exchange-coupled to an atomically flat yttrium iron garnet (YIG) ferromagnetic thin film. The anomalous Hall conductance has magnitude of ~0.09(2e2/h) at low temperatures and is measurable up to ~ 300 K. Our observations indicate not only proximity-induced ferromagnetism in graphene/YIG with large exchange interaction, but also enhanced spin-orbit coupling which is believed to be inherently weak in ideal graphene. The proximity-induced ferromagnetic order in graphene can lead to novel transport phenomena such as the quanti…
We observe proximity-induced superconductivity in the \textit{in situ} prepared heterostructures constructed by topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ thin films and high-temperature cuprate superconductors Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$. The superconducting gap maximum is about 7.6 meV on the surface of Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ thin films with a thickness of two quintuple layers, and the gap value decreases with an increase in the film thickness. Moreover, the quasiparticle interference data show a clear evidence of a twofold symmetric superconducting gap with gap minima along one pair of the pr…

We analyze the quantum interference effects appearing in the charge current through the double quantum dots coupled in T-shape configuration to an isotropic superconductor and metallic lead. Owing to proximity effect the quantum dots inherit a pairing which has the profound influence on nonequilibrium charge transport, especially in the subgap regime |eV| < Delta. We discuss under what conditions the Fano-type lineshapes might appear in such Andreev conductance and consider a possible interplay with the strong correlation effects.
We investigate the Fano-type spectroscopic lineshapes of the T-shape double quantum dot coupled between the conducting and superconducting electrodes and analyze their stability on a decoherence. Because of the proximity effect the quantum interference patterns appear simultaneously at +/- epsilon_2, where epsilon_2 is an energy of the side-attached quantum dot. We find that decoherence gradually suppresses both such interferometric structures. We also show that at low temperatures another tiny Fano-type structure can be induced upon forming the Kondo state on the side-coupled quantum dot due …
We present a theory of transport through interacting quantum dots coupled to normal and superconducting leads in the limit of weak tunnel coupling. A Josephson current between two superconducting leads, carried by first-order tunnel processes, can be established by non-equilibrium proximity effect. Both Andreev and Josephson current is suppressed for bias voltages below a threshold set by the Coulomb charging energy. A $π$-transition of the supercurrent can be driven by tuning gate or bias voltages.
We propose a system of coupled quantum dots in proximity to a superconductor and driven by separate ac potentials to realize and detect Floquet Majorana fermions. We show that the appearance of Floquet Majorana fermions can be finely controlled in the expanded parameter space of the drive frequency, amplitude, and phase difference across the two dots. While these Majorana fermions are not topologically protected, the highly tunable setup provides a realistic system for observing the exotic physics associated with Majorana fermions as well as their dynamical generation and manipulation.
We investigate the AC Josephson current through a quantum dot with strong Coulomb interaction attached to two superconducting and one normal lead. To this end, we perform a perturbation expansion in the tunneling couplings within a diagrammatic real-time technique. The AC Josephson current is connected to the reduced density matrix elements that describe superconducting correlations induced on the quantum dot via proximity effect. We analyze the dependence of the AC signal on the level position of the quantum dot, the charging energy, and the applied bias voltages.
Coherent spin dynamics in colloidal CdSe quantum dots (QDs) typically show two spin components with different Larmor frequencies, whose origin is an open question. We exploit the photocharging approach to identify their origin and find that surface states play a key role in the appearance of the spin signals. By controlling the photocharging with electron or hole acceptors, we show that the specific spin component can be enhanced by the choice of acceptor type. In core/shell CdSe/ZnS QDs, the spin signals are significantly weaker. Our results exclude the neutral exciton as the spin origin and …
We examine the influence of the superconducting proximity effect on the transport properties of a T-shaped double quantum dot strongly coupled to two normal, nonmagnetic or ferromagnetic leads. We show that the two-stage Kondo screening may be suppressed or enhanced by the presence of pairing correlations, depending on the specific geometric arrangement of the device. We explain our results by invoking effective decrease of Coulomb interactions by proximity effect and find qualitatively correct description in many cases, although spin-filtering effect stemming from spin-dependent Fano-Kondo in…
The anti-proximity effect, where the superconductivity in superconducting nanowires is suppressed or weakened when contacted by bulk superconducting electrodes, first revealed in arrays of Zn nanowires by tuning the electrodes from the superconducting to the normal state by means of an external magnetic field, has been confirmed in single crystal Aluminum nanowires. The critical current at zero magnetic field of an individual aluminum nanowire contacted by superconducting electrodes was found to be significantly smaller than that with normal electrodes showing that the effect is not a conseque…
A detailed understanding of the population and coherence dynamics in optically driven individual emitters in solids and their signatures in ultrafast nonlinear-optical signals is of prime importance for their applications in future quantum and optical technologies. In a combined experimental and theoretical study on exciton complexes in single semiconductor quantum dots we reveal a detailed picture of the dynamics employing three-beam polarization-resolved four-wave mixing (FWM) micro-spectroscopy. The oscillatory dynamics of the FWM signals in the exciton-biexciton system is governed by the f…
We study the transient phenomena appearing in a subgap region of the double quantum dot coupled in series between the superconducting and normal metallic leads, focusing on the development of the superconducting proximity effect. For the uncorrelated nanostructure we derive explicit expressions of the time-dependent occupancies in both quantum dots, charge currents, and electron pairing induced on individual dots and between them. We show that the initial configurations substantially affect the dynamical processes, in which the in-gap bound states emerge upon coupling the double quantum dot to…
Transmission phase αmeasurements of many-electron quantum dots (small mean level spacing δ) revealed universal phase lapses by πbetween consecutive resonances. In contrast, for dots with only a few electrons (large δ), the appearance or not of a phase lapse depends on the dot parameters. We show that a model of a multi-level quantum dot with local Coulomb interactions and arbitrary level-lead couplings reproduces the generic features of the observed behavior. The universal behavior of αfor small δfollows from Fano-type antiresonances of the renormalized single-particle levels.
Ferromagnetic proximity effect is studied in InAs nanowire (NW) based quantum dots (QD) strongly coupled to a ferromagnetic (F) and a superconducting (S) lead. The influence of the F lead is detected through the splitting of the spin-1/2 Kondo resonance. We show that the F lead induces a local exchange field on the QD, which has varying amplitude and a sign depending on the charge states. The interplay of the F and S correlations generates an exchange field related supgap feature. This novel mini-gap allows now the visualization of the exchange field also in even charge states
We report charge detection in degenerately phosphorus-doped silicon double quantum dots (DQD) electrically connected to an electron reservoir. The sensing device is a single electron transistor (SET) patterned in close proximity to the DQD. Measurements performed at 4.2K show step-like behaviour and shifts of the Coulomb Blockade oscillations in the detector's current as the reservoir's potential is swept. By means of a classical capacitance model, we demonstrate that the observed features can be used to detect single-electron tunnelling from, to and within the DQD, as well as to reveal the DQ…
In this paper, we investigate the transport through a T-shaped double quantum dot coupled to two normal metal leads left and right and a superconducting lead. Analytical expressions of Andreev transmission and local Density of States of the system at zero temperature have been obtained. We study the role of the superconducting lead in the quantum interferometric features of the double quantum dot. We report for first time the Fano effect produced by Andreev bound states in a side quantum dot. Our results show that as a consequence of quantum interference and proximity effect, the transmission …
Recently, the issue of whether the Kondo problem in quantum dots at large bias is a weak-coupling problem or not has been raised. In this paper, we revisit this problem by carefully analyzing a corresponding model in the solvable limit -- the Emery-Kivelson line, where various crossover energy scales can be easily identified. We then try to extract the scaling behavior of this problem from various physical correlation functions within the spirit of ``poor man's scaling.'' Our conclusions support some recent suggestions made by Coleman {\em et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 86}, 4088 (2001)], whic…
We present an inverted GaAs 2D electron gas with self-assembled InAs quantum dots in close proximity, with the goal of combining quantum transport with quantum optics experiments. We have grown and characterized several wafers -- using transport, AFM and optics -- finding narrow-linewidth optical dots and high-mobility, single subband 2D gases. Despite being buried 500 nm below the surface, the dots are clearly visible on AFM scans, allowing precise localization and paving the way towards a hybrid quantum system integrating optical dots with surface gate-defined nanostructures in the 2D gas.
The influence of the tip-substrate bias induced electrical field in a scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiment on colloidal InAs nanocrystals has been studied. Calculating the Stark induced splitting of the degenerate 1P_e state perturbatively within a particle-in-a-sphere model, revealed a possible explanation of recently published experimental wave function mapping data by Millo et al. (Ref. 1).
Quantum dots are gate-defined within InSb nanowires, in proximity to NbTiN superconducting contacts. As the coupling between the dot and the superconductor is increased, the odd-parity occupations become non-discernible (erased) both above and below the induced superconducting gap. Above the gap, conductance in the odd Coulomb valleys increases until the valleys are lifted. Below the gap, Andreev bound states undergo quantum phase transitions to singlet ground states at odd occupancy. We observe that the apparent erasure of odd-parity regimes coincides at low-bias and at high-bias. This observ…
The proximity effect between a superconductor and a highly diffusive two-dimensional metal was revealed in a Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy experiment. The in-situ elaborated samples consisted of superconducting single crystalline Pb islands interconnected by a non-superconducting atomically thin disordered Pb wetting layer. In the vicinity of each superconducting island the wetting layer acquires specific tunneling characteristics which reflect the interplay between the proximity-induced superconductivity and the inherent electron correlations of this ultimate diffusive two-dimensional metal…
We present a real-time diagrammatic theory for transport through interacting quantum dots tunnel coupled to normal and superconducting leads. Our formulation describes both the equilibrium and non-equilibrium superconducting proximity effect in a quantum dot. We study a three-terminal transistor geometry, consisting of a single-level quantum dot tunnel coupled to two phase-biased superconducting leads and one voltage-biased normal lead. We compute both the Josephson current between the two superconductors and the Andreev current in the normal lead, and analyze their switching on and off as wel…
Very recently, the electric dipole spin resonance (EDSR) of single electrons in quantum dots was discovered by three independent experimental groups. Remarkably, these observations revealed three different mechanisms of EDSR: coupling of electron spin to its momentum (spin-orbit), to the operator of its position (inhomogeneous Zeeman coupling), and to the hyperfine Overhauser field of nuclear spins. In this paper, I present a unified microscopic theory of these resonances in quantum dots. A mean field theory, derived for all three mechanisms and based on retaining only two-spin correlators, ju…

We study the transport through side-coupled double quantum dots, connected to normal and superconducting (SC) leads with a T-shape configuration. We find, using the numerical renormalization group, that the Coulomb interaction suppresses SC interference in the side dot, and enhances the conductance substantially in the Kondo regime. This behavior stands in total contrast to a wide Kondo valley seen in the normal transport. The SC proximity penetrating into the interfacial dot pushes the Kondo clouds, which screens the local moment in the side dot, towards the normal lead to make the singlet bo…
We report encapsulated C60 molecules on electron transport in carbon-nanotube peapod quantum dots. We find atomic-like behaviors with doubly degenerate electronic levels, which exist only around ground states, by single electron spectroscopy measured at low back-gate voltages (Vbg's). Correlation with presence of nearly free electrons (NFEs) unique to the peapods is discussed. In contrast, we find that encapsulated C60 molecules do not affect to single charging effect. Moreover, we find anomalously high values of powers observed in power laws in conductance versus energy relationships, which a…
The authors report that anisotropic confining potentials in laterally-coupled semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have large impacts in optical transitions and energies of inter-shell collective electronic excitations. The observed anisotropies are revealed by inelastic light scattering as a function of the in-plane direction of light polarization and can be finely controlled by modifying the geometrical shape of the QDs. These experiments show that the tuning of the QD confinement potential offers a powerful method to manipulate electronic states and far-infrared inter-shell optical transitions …
Considering Rashba quantum wires with a proximity-induced superconducting gap as physical realizations of Majorana fermions and quantum dots, we calculate the overlap of the Majorana wave functions with the local wave functions on the dot. We determine the spin-dependent tunneling amplitudes between these two localized states and show that we can tune into a fully spin polarized tunneling regime by changing the distance between dot and Majorana fermion. Upon directly applying this to the tunneling model Hamiltonian, we calculate the effective magnetic field on the quantum dot flanked by two Ma…
We used Raman scattering for study the phonon modes of self-organized Ge/Si quantum dots, grown by a molecular-beam epitaxy method. It is revealed, that Ge-Ge and Si-Ge vibrational modes considerably intensify at excitation of exciton between the {Lambda}3 valence and {Lanbda}1 conduction bands (transitions E1 and E1+{Delta}1), that allows to observe Raman scattering spectrum from extremely small volumes of Ge, even from one layer of quantum dots with the layer thickness of ~ 10 A. It is shown that Si diffuses into the Ge quantum dots from the Si spacer layers forming Ge_xSi_{1-x} solid soluti…
We investigated the peculiarities of non-equilibrium charge states and spin configurations in the system of two strongly coupled quantum dots (QDs) weakly connected to the electrodes in the presence of Coulomb correlations. We analyzed the modification of non-equilibrium charge states and different spin configurations of the system in a wide range of applied bias voltage and revealed well pronounced ranges of system parameters where negative tunneling conductivity appears due to the Coulomb correlations.
Recent photoabsorption measurements have revealed a rich fine structure in the collective charge-density excitation spectrum of few-electron quantum dots in the presence of magnetic fields. We have performed systematic computational studies of the far-infrared density response of quantum dots, using time-dependent density-functional theory in the linear regime and treating the dots as two-dimensional disks. It turns out that the main characteristics observed in the experiment can be understood in terms of the electronic shell structure of the quantum dots. However, new features arise if a brea…
We theoretically investigate the spectrum of a single electron double quantum dot, defined by top gates in a graphene with a substrate induced gap. We examine the effects of electric and magnetic fields on the spectrum of localized states, focusing on the tunability of the inter-dot coupling. We find that the substrate induced gap allows for electrostatic control, with some limitations that for a fixed inter-dot distance, the inter-dot coupling can not be made arbitrarily small due to the Klein tunneling. On the other hand, the proximity of the valence band in graphene allows for new regimes, …
We analyzed time evolution of the localized charge in the system of two interacting single level quantum dots (QDs) coupled with the continuous spectrum states in the presence of electron-phonon interaction. We demonstrated that electron-phonon interaction leads to the increasing of localized charge relaxation rate. We also found that several time scales with different relaxation rates appear in the system in the case of non-resonant tunneling between the dots. We revealed the formation of oscillations in the filling numbers time evolution caused by the emission and adsorption processes of pho…
Time evolution of initially prepared entangled state in the system of coupled quantum dots has been analyzed by means of two different theoretical approaches: equations of motion for the all orders localized electron correlation functions, considering interference effects, and kinetic equations for the pseudo-particle occupation numbers with constraint on the possible physical states. Results obtained by means of different approaches were carefully analyzed and compared with each other. Revealed direct link between concurrence (degree of entanglement) and quantum dots pair correlation function…
Magnetoresistance measurements have been performed on a gated two-dimensional electron system (2DES) separated by a thin barrier layer from a layer of InAs self-assembled quantum dots (QDs). Clear features of the quantum Hall effect were observed despite the proximity of the QDs layer to the 2DES. However, the magnetoresistance ($ρ_{xx}$) and Hall resistance ($ρ_{xy}$) are suppressed significantly in the magnetic field range of filling factor $ν<1$ when a positive voltage is applied to the front gate. The influence of the charge state in QDs was observed on the transport properties of the near…
We report fast, simultaneous charge sensing and transport measurements of gate-defined carbon nanotube quantum dots. Aluminum radio frequency single electron transistors (rf-SETs) capacitively coupled to the nanotube dot provide single-electron charge sensing on microsecond timescales. Simultaneously, rf reflectometry allows fast measurement of transport through the nanotube dot. Charge stability diagrams for the nanotube dot in the Coulomb blockade regime show extended Coulomb diamonds into the high-bias regime, as well as even-odd filling effects, revealed in charge sensing data.
We investigated the peculiarities of non-equilibrium charge configurations in the system of two strongly coupled quantum dots (QDs) weakly connected to the reservoirs in the presence of Coulomb correlations. We revealed that total electron occupation demonstrates in some cases significant decreasing with increasing of applied bias - contrary to the situation when Coulomb correlations are absent and found well pronounced ranges of system parameters where negative tunneling conductivity appears due to the Coulomb correlations.
We report on the growth and optical characterisation of droplet GaAs quantum dots with extremely-thin (11 nm) capping layers. To achieve such result, an internal thermal heating step is introduced during the growth and its role in the morphological properties of the quantum dots obtained is investigated via scanning electron and atomic force microscopy. Photoluminescence measurements at cryogenic temperatures show optically stable, sharp and bright emission from single quantum dots, at near-infrared wavelengths. Given the quality of their optical properties and the proximity to the surface, su…
The separation dependence of the interaction between two resonant groups of CdSe/ZnS nanocrystallite quantum dots is studied at room temperature. The superconducting proximity effect is probed experimentally in Josephson junctions fabricated with InAs nanowires contacted by Nb leads. Contact transparencies $t \sim 0.7$ are observed. The electronic phase coherence length at low temperatures exceeds the channel length. However, the elastic scattering length is a few times shorter than the channel length. Electrical measurements reveal two regimes of quantum transport: (i) the Josephson regime, characterized by a dissipationless current up to $\sim 100$ nA, and (ii) the quantum dot regime, characterized by the formation of Andreev Bound St…
We analyzed the localized charge dynamics in the system of $N$ interacting single-level quantum dots (QDs) coupled to the continuous spectrum states in the presence of Coulomb interaction between electrons within the dots. Different dots geometry and initial charge configurations were considered. The analysis was performed by means of Heisenberg equations for localized electrons pair correlators. We revealed that charge trapping takes place for a wide range of system parameters and we suggested the QDs geometry for experimental observations of this phenomenon. We demonstrated significant suppr…
We present electronic structure and quantum transport calculations that predict conducting channels induced in graphene quantum dots by lines of adsorbed hydrogen atoms to function as highly efficient, experimentally realizable valley filters, accumulators and switches. The underlying physics is a novel property of graphene Dirac point resonances (DPRs) that is revealed here, namely, that an electric current passing through a DPR-mediated conducting channel in a given direction is carried by electrons of em only one of the two graphene valleys. Our predictions apply to lines of hydrogen atoms …
We investigated the tunneling current peculiarities in the system of two coupled by means of the external field quantum dots (QDs) weakly connected to the electrodes in the presence of Coulomb correlations. It was found that tuning of the external field frequency induces fast multiple tunneling current switching and leads to the negative tunneling conductivity. Special role of multi-electrons states was demonstrated. Moreover we revealed conditions for bistable behavior of the tunneling current in the coupled QDs with Coulomb correlations.
We study the physics of electron tunneling between multiple quantum dots and the edge of a quantum Hall state. Our results generalize earlier work [G. A. Fiete, W. Bishara, C. Nayak, Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 176801 (2008)] in which it was shown that a single quantum dot tunnel coupled to a non-Abelian quantum Hall state can realize a stable multi-channel Kondo fixed point at low-energy. In this work, we investigate the physics of multiple dots and find that a rich set of possible low-energy fixed points arises, including those with non-Fermi liquid properties. Previously unidentified fixed points…
Probing the universal low temperature magnetic field scaling of Kondo-correlated quantum dots via electrical conductance has proved to be experimentally challenging. Here, we show how to probe this in nonlinear thermocurrent spectroscopy applied to a molecular quantum dot in the Kondo regime. Our results demonstrate that the bias-dependent thermocurrent is a sensitive probe of universal Kondo physics, directly measures the splitting of the Kondo resonance in a magnetic field, and opens up possibilities for investigating nanosystems far from thermal and electrical equilibrium.
We consider a quantum dot embedded in a three-dimensional nanowire with tunable aspect ratio a. A configuration interaction theory is developed to calculate the energy spectra of the finite 1D quantum dot systems charged with two electrons in the presence of magnetic fields B along the wire axis. Fruitful singlet-triplet transition behaviors are revealed and explained in terms of the competing exchange interaction, correlation interaction, and spin Zeeman energy. In the high aspect ratio regime, the singlet-triplet transitions are shown designable by tuning the parameters a and B. The transiti…
We investigate theoretically the thermoelectric transport properties of a T-shaped double quantum dot side-coupled to a topological superconducting nanowire hosting Majorana zero-energy modes. The calculations are performed using the numerical renormalization group method focusing on the transport regime, where the system exhibits the two-stage Kondo effect. It is shown that the leakage of Majorana quasiparticles into the double dot system results in a half-suppression of the second stage of the Kondo effect, which is revealed through fractional values of the charge and heat conductances and g…
