It is crucial to identify the ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray (UHECR) sources and probe their unknown properties. Recent results from the Pierre Auger Observatory favor a heavy nuclear composition for the UHECRs. Under the requirement that heavy nuclei survive in these sources, using gamma-ray bursts as an example, we predict a diagnostic gamma-ray signal, unique to nuclei - the emission of de-excitation gamma rays following photodisintegration. These gamma rays, boosted from MeV to TeV-PeV energies, may be detectable by gamma-ray telescopes such as VERITAS, HESS, and MAGIC, and especially the next-generation CTA and AGIS. They are a promising messenger to identify and study individual UHE nuclei accelerators.
The results of simulations of the extragalactic propagation of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) have intrinsic uncertainties due to poorly known physical quantities and approximations used in the codes. We quantify the uncertainties in the simulated UHECR spectrum and composition due to different models for the extragalactic background light (EBL), different photodisintegration setups, approximations concerning photopion production and the use of different simulation codes. We discuss the results for several representative source scenarios with proton, nitrogen or iron at injection. For …
We study the effects that the diffusion of the cosmic rays in the magnetic field of the Local Supercluster can have on the spectrum of a nearby extragalactic source at ultrahigh energies. We find that the strong enhancement of the flux below the energy at which the transition between the diffusive and quasirectilinear regimes takes place, as well as the suppression at lower energies associated with a finite source age, can help to explain the observed features of the cosmic-ray spectrum and the composition. Scenarios are discussed in which a nearby extragalactic source with mixed composition a…
We use a multimessenger approach to constrain realistic mixed composition models of ultrahigh energy cosmic ray sources using the latest cosmic ray, neutrino, and gamma-ray data. We build on the successful Unger-Farrar-Anchordoqui 2015 (UFA15) model which explains the shape of the spectrum and its complex composition evolution via photodisintegration of accelerated nuclei in the photon field surrounding the source. We explore the constraints which can currently be placed on the redshift evolution of sources and the temperature of the photon field surrounding the sources. We show that a good fi…
The sharp change in slope of the ultrahigh-energy cosmic ray spectrum around 10^{9.6} GeV (the ankle), combined with evidence of a light but extragalactic component near and below the ankle which evolves to intermediate/heavy composition above, has proved exceedingly challenging to understand theoretically. Recently, we introduced a very general model in which, for a range of source conditions, photo-disintegration of ultrahigh-energy nuclei in the region surrounding the accelerator naturally accounts for the observed spectrum and composition of the entire extragalactic component, which domina…
The brightest long gamma-ray burst detected so far by the Swift-BAT and Fermi-GBM telescopes, GRB~221009A, provides an unprecedented opportunity for understanding the high-energy processes in extreme transient phenomena. We find that the conventional leptonic models, synchrotron and synchrotron-self-Compton, for the afterglow emission from this source have difficulties explaining the observation of $\gtrsim 10$ TeV $γ$ rays, by the LHAASO detector, and extending up to 18 TeV energies. We model $γ$-ray spectrum estimated in the energy range 0.1-1 GeV by the Fermi-LAT detector. The flux predicte…
The images of ultrahigh-energy cosmic ray sources get distorted, in an energy dependent way, by the effects of Galactic and extragalactic magnetic fields. These deflections can also affect the observed cosmic ray spectrum, specially when the sources are transient. We study scenarios in which one or a few nearby extragalactic sources, such as CenA or M81/M82, provide the dominant contribution to the cosmic ray flux above the ankle of the spectrum. We discuss the effects of the angular dispersion induced by the turbulent extragalactic magnetic fields, and the coherent deflections caused by the r…
Ultrahigh energy protons and nuclei from extragalactic cosmic ray sources initiate intergalactic electromagnetic cascades, resulting in observable fluxes of $γ$-rays in the GeV-TeV energy domain. The total spectrum of such cascade $γ$-rays of hadronic nature is significantly harder than the one usually expected from blazars. The spectra of some sources known as "extreme TeV blazars" could be well-described by this "intergalactic hadronic cascade model" (IHCM). We calculate the shape of the observable point-like spectrum, as well as the observable angular distibution of $γ$-rays, for the first …
We fit the ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray (UHECR, $E\gtrsim0.1$ EeV) spectrum and composition data from the Pierre Auger Observatory at energies $E\gtrsim5\cdot10^{18}$ eV, i.e., beyond the ankle using two populations of astrophysical sources. One population, accelerating dominantly protons ($^1$H), extends up to the highest observed energies with maximum energy close to the GZK cutoff and injection spectral index near the Fermi acceleration model; while another population accelerates light-to-heavy nuclei ($^4$He, $^{14}$N, $^{28}$Si, $^{56}$Fe) with a relatively low rigidity cutoff and hard inj…
We study the spectrum and anisotropies of ultrahigh energy cosmic ray transient sources, accounting for the effects of their propagation through the turbulent extragalactic magnetic fields. We consider either bursting sources or sources emitting since a given initial time. We analyse in detail the transition between the diffusive and the quasi-rectilinear regimes, describing some new features that could be present
Observations of TeV--PeV-energy cosmic neutrinos by the IceCube observatory have suggested that extragalactic cosmic-ray sources should have an optical depth greater than $\sim$0.01 and contribute to more than 10\% of the observed bulk of cosmic rays at 10 PeV. If the spectrum of cosmic rays from these extragalactic sources extends well beyond 1 EeV, the neutrino flux indicates that extragalactic cosmic-ray protons are dominant in the observed total cosmic-ray flux at 1 EeV. Among known powerful astronomical objects, including gamma-ray bursters (GRBs), only flat-spectrum radio quasars could (…
I review the status of ultrahigh-energy cosmic ray (UHECR) physics. After introducing the main experimental results and summarizing possible intepretations, I discuss observational and theoretical constraints on the sources of UHECRs. I comment also briefly on the role of magnetic fields. Combining these constraints, I argue that luminuous and numerous AGN types as FR-I and Seyfert galaxies, or alternatively hypernovae, are the most promising UHECR sources. Finally, I sketch few of the models presented at the conference before concluding.
Fast-spinning newborn pulsars are intriguing candidate sources of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). The acceleration of particles with a given composition in a fraction of the extragalactic pulsar population can give a consistent explanation for the measurements of the Auger Observatory. We calculate the associated diffuse neutrino flux produced while particles cross the supernova ejecta surrounding the stars. We show that in the minimal pulsar scenario that are compatible with the UHECR data, the effective optical depth to hadronuclear interactions is larger than unity at ultrahigh energ…
We explore the possibility that the recently detected dipole anisotropy in the arrival directions of~$>8$~EeV ultra-high energy cosmic-rays (UHECRs) arises due to the large-scale structure (LSS). We assume that the cosmic ray sources follow the matter distribution and calculate the flux-weighted UHECRs' RMS dipole amplitude taking into account the diffusive transport in the intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF). We find that the flux-weighted RMS dipole amplitude is $\sim8$% before entering the Galaxy. The amplitude in the [4-8] EeV is only slightly lower $\sim 5$%. The required IGMF is of the o…
Energetics of the ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) generated in the universe is crucial for pinning down their candidate sources. Using the recent Auger data on UHECR spectra, we calculate the UHECR energy generation rate density for different species of nuclei at the injection, considering intermediate and heavy nuclei as well as protons, through scanning over source parameters on the spectral index, maximum energy and redshift evolution. We find the resulting UHECR energy generation rate density to be $\approx(0.2-2)\times$10$^{44}$~erg~Mpc$^{-3}$~yr$^{-1}$ at $10^{19.5}$~eV with a nont…
We explain the observed multiwavelength photon spectrum of a number of BL Lac objects detected at very high energy (VHE, $E \gtrsim 30$ GeV), using a lepto-hadronic emission model. The one-zone leptonic emission is employed to fit the synchrotron peak. Subsequently, the SSC spectrum is calculated, such that it extends up to the highest energy possible for the jet parameters considered. The data points beyond this energy, and also in the entire VHE range are well explained using a hadronic emission model. The ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs, $E\gtrsim 0.1$ EeV) escaping from the source int…
We review open questions and prospects for progress in ultrahigh-energy cosmic ray (UHECR) research, based on a series of discussions that took place during the `The High-Energy Universe: Gamma-Ray, Neutrino, and Cosmic-ray Astronomy' MIAPP workshop in 2018. Specifically, we overview open questions on the origin of the bulk of UHECRs, the UHECR mass composition, the origin of the end of the cosmic-ray spectrum, the transition from Galactic to extragalactic cosmic rays, the effect of magnetic fields on the trajectories of UHECRs, anisotropy expectations for specific astrophysical scenarios, had…
The origin and nature of the ultrahigh energy cosmic rays remains a mystery. However, considerable progress has been achieved in past years due to observations performed by the Pierre Auger Observatory and Telescope Array. Above $10^{18}$ eV the observed energy spectrum presents two features: a hardening of the slope at $\sim 10^{18.6}$ eV, which is known as the ankle, and a suppression at $\sim 10^{19.6}$ eV. The composition inferred from the experimental data, interpreted by using the current high energy hadronic interaction models, seems to be light below the ankle, showing a trend to heavi…

Recent data from the Pierre Auger Observatory has revealed the presence of a large-scale dipole in the arrival direction distribution of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR). In this work, we build up an understanding of the diffusive origin of such a dipolar behavior as well as its dependency on energy and astrophysical source assumptions such as extragalactic magnetic field strength and cosmic ray composition. We present a novel analytical approach for calculating the angular distribution of CR coming from a single source and discuss the regimes in which the steady-state dipole result is ex…
Blazars are potential candidates of cosmic-ray acceleration up to ultrahigh energies ($E\gtrsim10^{18}$ eV). For an efficient cosmic-ray injection from blazars, $pγ$ collisions with the extragalactic background light (EBL) and cosmic microwave background (CMB) can produce neutrino spectrum peaks near PeV and EeV energies, respectively. We analyze the contribution of these neutrinos to the diffuse background measured by the IceCube neutrino observatory. The fraction of neutrino luminosity originating from individual redshift ranges is calculated using the distribution of BL Lacs and FSRQs provi…
The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory~(LHAASO) is one of the most sensitive gamma-ray detector arrays currently operating at TeV and PeV energies. Recently the LHAASO experiment detected ultra-high-energy~(UHE; $E_γ\gtrsim 100~\mathrm{TeV}$) photon emissions up to $1.4~\mathrm{PeV}$ from twelve astrophysical gamma-ray sources. We point out that the detection of cosmic photons at such energies can constrain the photon self-decay motivated by superluminal Lorentz symmetry violation~(LV) to a higher level, thus can put strong constraints to certain LV frameworks. Meanwhile, we suggest th…
The origin of the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray remains being a mystery. However, a considerable progress has been made in the past few years due to the good quality data recorded by current cosmic ray observatories. One of the recent achievements is obtaining firm observational evidence about the extragalactic origin of the most energetic cosmic rays by the Pierre Auger observatory. On the other hand, it is believed that there is a non-null turbulent magnetic field that fills the intergalactic medium. Therefore, the presence of the intergalactic magnetic field can play an important role on the …
The interactions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) in extragalactic space with photons of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and extragalactic background light (EBL) can generate high-energy neutrinos and photons. Simulations of UHECR propagation require knowledge about physical quantities such as the spectrum of the EBL and photodisintegration cross sections. These assumptions, as well as the approximations used in the codes, may influence the computed UHECR spectrum and composition, and the associated cosmogenic neutrino and photon fluxes. Following up on our previous work where w…
The luminosity densities of high-energy cosmic radiations are studied to find connections among the various components, including high-energy neutrinos measured with IceCube and gamma rays with the Fermi satellite. Matching the cosmic-ray energy generation rate density in a GeV-TeV range estimated for Milky Way with the ultrahigh-energy component requires a power-law index of the spectrum, $s_{\rm cr}\approx2.1-2.2$, somewhat harder than $s_{\rm cr}\approx2.3-2.4$ for the local index derived from the AMS-02 experiment. The soft GeV-TeV cosmic-ray spectrum extrapolated to higher energies can be…
We aim to explain in a unified way the experimental data on ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECR) and neutrinos, using a single source class and obeying limits on the extragalactic diffuse gamma-ray background (EGRB). If UHECRs only interact hadronically with gas around their sources, the resulting diffuse CR flux can be matched well to the observed one, providing at the same time large neutrino fluxes. However, air showers in the Earth's atmosphere induced by UHECRs with energies $E>3\times 10^{18}$ eV would reach in such a case their maxima too high. Therefore additional photo-hadronic intera…

Important observational results have been recently reported on the angular distributions of cosmic rays at all energies, calling into question the perception of cosmic rays a decade ago. These results together with their in-progress interpretations are summarised in this review paper, covering both large-scale and small-scale anisotropies from TeV energies to the highest ones. While the magnetic field in the Galaxy has long been considered as an external data imprinting a quasi-random walk to particles and thus shaping the angular distributions of Galactic cosmic rays through the induced avera…
PeV neutrinos from the propagation of ultra-high energy cosmic rays
The observational data on ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECR), in particular their mass composition, show strong indications for extremely hard spectra of individual mass groups of CR nuclei at Earth. In this work, we show that such hard spectra can be the result of the finite life-time of UHECR sources, if a few individual sources dominate the UHECR flux at the highest energies. In this case, time delays induced by deflections in the turbulent extragalactic magnetic field as well as from the diffusive or advective escape from the source environment can suppress low-energy CRs, leading to a s…
