We deal with a class of Lipschitz vector functions $U=(u_1,...,u_h)$ whose components are non negative, disjointly supported and verify an elliptic equation on each support. Under a weak formulation of a reflection law, related to the Pohouzaev identity, we prove that the nodal set is a collection of $C^{1,α}$ hyper-surfaces (for every $0<α<1$), up to a residual set with small Hausdorff dimension. This result applies to the asymptotic limits of reaction-diffusion systems with strong competition interactions, to optimal partition problems involving eigenvalues, as well as to segregated standing waves for Bose-Einstein condensates in multiple hyperfine spin states.
For the singularly perturbed system \[Δu_{i,β}=βu_{i,β}\sum_{j\neq i}u_{j,β}^2, \quad 1\leq i\leq N,\] we prove that flat interfaces are uniformly Lipschitz. As a byproduct of the proof we also obtain the optimal lower bound near the flat interfaces, \[\sum_iu_{i,β}\geq cβ^{-1/4}.\]
We study the regularity of segregated profiles arising from competition - diffusion models, where the diffusion process is of nonlocal type and is driven by the fractional Laplacian of power $s \in (0,1)$. Among others, our results apply to the regularity of the densities of an optimal partition problem involving the eigenvalues of the fractional Laplacian. More precisely, we show $C^{0,α^*}$ regularity of the density, where the exponent $α^*$ is explicit and is given by \begin{equation*} α^* = \begin{cases} s & \text{for $s \in (0,1/2]$}\\ 2s-1 &\text{for $s \in (1/2,1]$}.\end{cases} \end{equ…
We study the local structure and the regularity of free boundaries of segregated critical configurations involving the square root of the laplacian. We develop an improvement of flatness theory and, as a consequence of this and Almgren's monotonicity formula, we obtain partial regularity (up to a small dimensional set) of the nodal set, thus extending the known resultsfor the standard diffusion to some anomalous case.
We consider a non-local Shrödinger problem driven by the fractional Orlicz g-Laplace operator as follows \begin{equation}\label{PP} (-\triangle_{g})^αu+g(u)=K(x)f(x,u),\ \ \text{in}\ \mathbb{R}^{d},\tag{P} \end{equation} where $d\geq 3,\ (-\triangle_{g})^α$ is the fractional Orlicz g-Laplace operator, $f:\mathbb{R}^d\times\mathbb{R}\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ is a measurable function and $K$ is a positive continuous function. Employing the Nehari manifold method and without assuming the well-known Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz and differentiability conditions on the non-linear term $f$, we prove that the …
This paper deals with solutions to the equation \begin{equation*} -Δu = λ_+ \left(u^+\right)^{q-1} - λ_- \left(u^-\right)^{q-1} \quad \text{in $B_1$} \end{equation*} where $λ_+,λ_- > 0$, $q \in (0,1)$, $B_1=B_1(0)$ is the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N \ge 2$, and $u^+:= \max\{u,0\}$, $u^-:= \max\{-u,0\}$ are the positive and the negative part of $u$, respectively. We extend to this class of \emph{singular} equations the results recently obtained in \cite{SoTe2018} for \emph{sublinear and discontinuous} equations, $1\leq q<2$, namely: (a) the finiteness of the vanishing order at every point a…
This paper is concerned with the nodal set of weak solutions to a broken quasilinear partial differential equation, \begin{equation*} \mbox{div} (a_+ \nabla u^+ - a_- \nabla u^-) = \mbox{div} f, \end{equation*} where $a_+$ and $a_-$ are uniformly elliptic, Dini continuous coefficient matrices, subject to a strong correlation that $a_+$ and $a_-$ are a multiple of some scalar function to each other. Under such a structural condition, we develop an iteration argument to achieve higher-order approximation of solutions at a singular point, which is also new for standard elliptic PDEs below Hölder …
We study the nodal set of solutions to equations of the form $$ (-Δ)^s u = λ_+ (u_+)^{q-1} - λ_- (u_-)^{q-1}\quad\text{in $B_1$}, $$ where $λ_+,λ_->0, q \in [1,2)$, and $u_+$ and $u_-$ are respectively the positive and negative part of $u$. This collection of nonlinearities includes the unstable two-phase membrane problem $q=1$ as well as sublinear equations for $1<q<2$. We initially prove the validity of the strong unique continuation property and the finiteness of the vanishing order, in order to implement a blow-up analysis of the nodal set. As in the local case $s=1$, we prove that the adm…

We prove the following main results: (a) the finiteness of the vanishing orde…
We study the effects of perturbing the boundary of a rectangle on the nodal sets of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian. Namely, for a rectangle of a given aspect ratio $N$, we identify the first Dirichlet mode to feature a crossing in its nodal set and perturb one of the sides of the rectangle by a close to flat, smooth curve. Such perturbations will often "open" the crossing in the nodal set, splitting it into two curves, and we study the separation between these curves and their regularity. The main technique used is an approximate separation of variables that allows us to restrict study to the…
We give conditions for the existence of regular optimal partitions, with an arbitrary number $\ell\geq 2$ of components, for the Yamabe equation on a closed Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$. To this aim, we study a weakly coupled competitive elliptic system of $\ell$ equations, related to the Yamabe equation. We show that this system has a least energy solution with nontrivial components if $\dim M\geq 10$, $(M,g)$ is not locally conformally flat and satisfies an additional geometric assumption whenever $\dim M=10$. Moreover, we show that the limit profiles of the components of the solution separat…
In this paper we study solutions to elliptic linear equations $L(u)=\partial_i(a^{ij}(x)\partial_j u) + b^i(x) \partial_i u + c(x) u=0$, either on $R^n$ or a Riemannian manifold, under the assumption of Lipschitz control on the coefficients $a^{ij}$. We focus our attention on the critical set $Cr(u)\equiv\{x:|\nabla u|=0\}$ and the singular set $S(u)\equiv\{x:u=|\nabla u|=0\}$, and more importantly on effective versions of these. Currently, under the coefficient control we have assumed, the strongest results in the literature say that the singular set is n-2-dimensional, however at this point …
