The Hill cipher is a classical symmetric encryption algorithm that succumbs to the know-plaintext attack. Although its vulnerability to cryptanalysis has rendered it unusable in practice, it still serves an important pedagogical role in cryptology and linear algebra. In this paper, a variant of the Hill cipher is introduced that makes the Hill cipher secure while it retains the efficiency. The proposed scheme includes a ciphering core for which a cryptographic protocol is introduced.
Two recent Hill cipher modifications which iteratively use interweaving and interlacing are considered. We show that strength of these ciphers is due to non-linear transformation used in them (bit-level permutations). Impact of number of iterations on the avalanche effect is investigated. We propose two Hill cipher modifications using column swapping and arbitrary permutation with significantly less computational complexity (2 iterations are used versus 16). The proposed modifications decrease encryption time while keeping the strength of the ciphers. Numerical experiments for two proposed cip…
In this paper, a variant of the Hill cipher is proposed. In the classical Hill cipher, an invertible matrix is used for encryption but the scheme is vulnerable to the known-plaintext attack which can reveal the matrix. In our proposed cryptosystem, each plaintext block is encrypted by a new invertible key matrix that thwarts the known-plaintext attack. To generate the invertible matrices which serve as the dynamic keys we make use of the vector spaces, randomly generated basis and non-singular linear transformation. Resulting cipher is secure against the known-plaintext attack.
This paper studies the security of an image encryption scheme based on the Hill cipher and reports its following problems: 1) there is a simple necessary and sufficient condition that makes a number of secret keys invalid; 2) it is insensitive to the change of the secret key; 3) it is insensitive to the change of the plain-image; 4) it can be broken with only one known/chosen-plaintext; 5) it has some other minor defects.
The Hill Cipher is a classical symmetric cipher which breaks plaintext into blocks of size m and then multiplies each block by an m by m key matrix to yield ciphertext. However, it is well known that the Hill cipher succumbs to cryptanalysis relatively easily. As a result, there have been efforts to strengthen the cipher through the use of various techniques e.g. permuting rows and columns of the key matrix to encrypt each plaintext vector with a new key matrix. In this paper, we strengthen the security of the Hill cipher against a known-plaintext attack by encrypting each plaintext matrix by …
Most cryptosystems are defined over finite algebraic structures where arithmetic operations are performed modulo natural numbers. This applies to private key as well as to public key ciphers. No secure cryptosystems defined over the field of real numbers are known. In this work, we demonstrate the feasibility of constructing secure symmetric key ciphers defined over the field of real numbers. We consider the security of ciphers introduced in a previous work and based on solving linear and non-linear equations numerically. We complement the design of those ciphers to satisfy the requirements of…
We follow two main objectives in this article. On the one hand, we introduce a security model called LORBACPA$^+$ for self-synchronized stream ciphers which is stronger than the blockwise LOR-IND-CPA, where we show that standard constructions as delayed CBC or similar existing self-synchronized modes of operation are not secure in this stronger model. Then, on the other hand, following contributions of G.~Millérioux et.al., we introduce a new self-synchronized stream cipher and prove its security in LORBACPA$^+$ model.
We consider the problem of constructing an unconditionally secure cipher for the case when the key length is less than the length of the encrypted message. (Unconditional security means that a computationally unbounded adversary cannot obtain information about the encrypted message without the key.) In this article, we propose data compression and randomization techniques combined with entropically-secure encryption. The resulting cipher can be used for encryption in such a way that the key length does not depend on the entropy or the length of the encrypted message; instead, it is determined …
This paper explains the recent developments in security and encryption. The Butterfly cipher and quantum cryptography are reviewed and compared. Examples of their relative uses are discussed and suggestions for future developments considered. In addition application to network security together with a substantial review of classification of encryption systems and a summary of security weaknesses are considered.
In this article, we have proposed a public key cryptography using Affine-Hill cipher with a generalized Fibonacci matrix(called multinacci matrix). Also proposed a key establishment(exchange of key matrix $K=Q_λ^{k}$ of order $λ\timesλ$ for encryption-decryption) scheme with the help of multinacci sequences under prime modulo. In this scheme, instead of exchanging key matrix, we need to exchange the only pair of numbers $(λ, k)$, which reduces the time complexity as well as space complexity and comes with a large key-space.
Caesar cipher is an ancient, elementary method of encrypting plain text message to protect it from adversaries. However, with the advent of powerful computers there is a need for increasing the complexity of such algorithms. In this paper, we contribute in the area of classical cryptography by providing a modified approach and expanded version for Caesar cipher using knowledge of mathematics and computer science. To increase the strength of this classical encryption technique we use the concepts of affine ciphers, transposition ciphers and randomized substitution techniques to create a cipher …
In this paper, we describe non invertible matrix in GF(2)which can be used as multiplication matrix in Hill Cipher technique for one way hash algorithm. The matrices proposed are permutation matrices with exactly one entry 1 in each row and each column and 0 elsewhere. Such matrices represent a permutation of m elements. Since the invention, Hill cipher algorithm was used for symmetric encryption, where the multiplication matrix is the key. The Hill cipher requires the inverse of the matrix to recover the plaintext from cipher text. We propose a class of matrices in GF(2) which are non inverti…
This paper develops a new algorithm to improve the security of RC4. Given that RC4 cipher is widely used in the wireless communication and has some weaknesses in the security of RC4 cipher, our idea is based on the combination of the RC4 and the poly alphabetic cipher Vigenère to give a new and more secure algorithm which we called VRC4. In this technique the plain text is encrypted using the classic RC4 cipher then re-encrypt the resulted cipher text using Vigenère cipher to be a more secure cipher text. For simplicity, we have implemented our new algorithm in Java Script taking into consider…
Natural phenomena show that many creatures form large social groups and move in regular patterns. Previous In this paper, we first propose an efficient distributed mining algorithm to jointly identify a group of moving objects and discover their movement patterns in wireless sensor networks. Afterward, we propose a compression algorithm, called 2P2D, which exploits the obtained group movement patterns to reduce the amount of delivered data. The compression algorithm includes a sequence merge and an entropy reduction phases. we formulate a Hit Item Replacement (HIR) problem and propose a Replac…
In 2002, Russell and Wang proposed a definition of entropically security that was developed within the framework of secret key cryptography. An entropically-secure system is unconditionally secure, that is, unbreakable, regardless of the enemy's computing power. In 2004, Dodis and Smith developed the results of Russell and Wang and, in particular, stated that the concept of an entropy-protected symmetric encryption scheme is extremely important for cryptography, since it is possible to construct entropy-protected symmetric encryption schemes with keys much shorter than the keys. the length of …
The resource-constrained nature of the Internet of Things (IoT) devices, poses a challenge in designing a secure, reliable, and particularly high-performance communication for this family of devices. Although side-channel resistant ciphers (either block cipher or stream cipher) are the well-suited solution to establish a guaranteed secure communication, the energy-intensive nature of these ciphers makes them undesirable for particularly lightweight IoT solutions. In this paper, we introduce ExTru, a novel encrypted communication protocol based on stream ciphers that adds a configurable switchi…
In recent years, several protocols for password-based authenticated key exchange have been proposed. These protocols aim to be secure even though the sample space of passwords may be small enough to be enumerated by an off-line adversary. In Eurocrypt 2000, Bellare, Pointcheval and Rogaway (BPR) presented a model and security definition for authenticated key exchange. They claimed that in the ideal-cipher model (random oracles), the two-flow protocol at the core of Encrypted Key Exchange (EKE) is secure. Bellare and Rogaway suggested several instantiations of the ideal cipher in their proposal…
A new scheme for transmitting sensitive data is proposed, the proposed scheme depends on partitioning the output of a block encryption module using the Chinese Remainder Theorem among a set of channels. The purpose of using the Chinese Remainder Theorem is to hide the cipher text in order to increase the difficulty of attacking the cipher. The theory, implementation and the security of this scheme are described in this paper.
In this paper we consider the description of homomorphic and fully homomorphic ciphers in the $p$-adic model of encryption. This model describes a wide class of ciphers, but certainly not all. Homomorphic and fully homomorphic ciphers are used to ensure the credibility of remote computing, including cloud technology. The model describes all homomorphic ciphers with respect to arithmetic and coordinate-wise logical operations in the ring of $p$-adic integers $Z_p$. We show that there are no fully homomorphic ciphers for each pair of the considered set of arithmetic and coordinate-wise logical o…
Reversible data hiding in encrypted images (RDH-EI) has attracted increasing attention, since it can protect the privacy of original images while the embedded data can be exactly extracted. Recently, some RDH-EI schemes with multiple data hiders have been proposed using secret sharing technique. However, these schemes protect the contents of the original images with lightweight security level. In this paper, we propose a high-security RDH-EI scheme with multiple data hiders. First, we introduce a cipher-feedback secret sharing (CFSS) technique. It follows the cryptography standards by introduc…
We consider the problem of constructing an unconditionally secure cipher with a short key for the case where the probability distribution of encrypted messages is unknown. Note that unconditional security means that an adversary with no computational constraints can obtain only a negligible amount of information ("leakage") about an encrypted message (without knowing the key). Here we consider the case of a priori (partially) unknown message source statistics. More specifically, the message source probability distribution belongs to a given family of distributions. We propose an unconditionall…
We study secure and undetectable communication in a world where governments can read all encrypted communications of citizens. We consider a world where the only permitted communication method is via a government-mandated encryption scheme, using government-mandated keys. Citizens caught trying to communicate otherwise (e.g., by encrypting strings which do not appear to be natural language plaintexts) will be arrested. The one guarantee we suppose is that the government-mandated encryption scheme is semantically secure against outsiders: a perhaps advantageous feature to secure communication a…
The previous work showed that the Y00 protocol could stay secure with the eavesdropper's guessing probability on the secret keys being strictly less than one under an unlimitedly long known-plaintext attack with quantum memory. However, an assumption that at least a fast correlation attack is completely disabled by irregular mapping. The present study shows that the Y00 protocol can be information-theoretic secure under any quantum-computational crypto-analyses if the Y00 system is well designed. The Y00 protocol directly encrypts messages with short secret keys expanded into pseudo-random run…
This paper discusses mixing of chaotic systems as a dependable method for secure communication. Distribution of the entropy function for steady state as well as plaintext input sequences are analyzed. It is shown that the mixing of chaotic sequences results in a sequence that does not have any state dependence on the information encrypted by them. The generated output states of such a cipher approach the theoretical maximum for both complexity measures and cycle length. These features are then compared with some popular ciphers.
This paper presents a novel and robust chaos-based cryptosystem for secure transmitted images and four other versions. In the proposed block encryption/decryption algorithm, a 2D chaotic map is used to shuffle the image pixel positions. Then, substitution (confusion) and permutation (diffusion) operations on every block, with multiple rounds, are combined using two perturbed chaotic PWLCM maps. The perturbing orbit technique improves the statistical properties of encrypted images. The obtained error propagation in various standard cipher block modes demonstrates that the proposed cryptosystem …
The McEliece public-key encryption scheme has become an interesting alternative to cryptosystems based on number-theoretical problems. Differently from RSA and ElGa- mal, McEliece PKC is not known to be broken by a quantum computer. Moreover, even tough McEliece PKC has a relatively big key size, encryption and decryption operations are rather efficient. In spite of all the recent results in coding theory based cryptosystems, to the date, there are no constructions secure against chosen ciphertext attacks in the standard model - the de facto security notion for public-key cryptosystems. In thi…
While information-theoretic security is often associated with the one-time pad and quantum key distribution, noisy transport media leave room for classical techniques and even covert operation. Transit times across the public internet exhibit a degree of randomness, and cannot be determined noiselessly by an eavesdropper. We demonstrate the use of these measurements for information-theoretically secure communication over the public internet.
Predicate encryption is a new paradigm of public key encryption that enables searches on encrypted data. Using the predicate encryption, we can search keywords or attributes on encrypted data without decrypting the ciphertexts. In predicate encryption, a ciphertext is associated with attributes and a token corresponds to a predicate. The token that corresponds to a predicate $f$ can decrypt the ciphertext associated with attributes $x$ if and only if $f(x)=1$. Hidden vector encryption (HVE) is a special kind of predicate encryption. In this thesis, we consider the efficiency, the generality, a…

A process for the secure transmission of data is presented that has to a certain degree the advantages of the one-time pad (OTP) cipher, that is, simplicity, speed, and information-theoretically security, but overcomes its fundamental weakness, the necessity of securely exchanging a key that is as long as the message. For each transmission, a dedicated one-time pad is generated for encrypting and decrypting the plaintext message. This one-time pad is built from a randomly chosen set of basic keys taken from a public library. Because the basic keys can be chosen and used multiple times, the met…
Recently, an image encryption algorithm based on scrambling and Vegin`ere cipher has been proposed. However, it was soon cryptanalyzed by Zhang et al. using a combination of chosen-plaintext attack and differential attack. This paper briefly reviews the two attack methods proposed by Zhang et al. and outlines the mathematical interpretations of them. Based on their work, we present an improved chosen-plaintext attack to further reduce the number of chosen-plaintexts required, which is proved to be optimal. Moreover, it is found that an elaborately designed known-plaintex attack can efficiently…
This paper proposes to put forward an innovative algorithm for symmetric key block cipher named as "Triple Prime Symmetric Key Block Cipher with Variable Key-Spaces (TPSKBCVK)" that employs triple prime integers as private key-spaces of varying lengths to encrypt data files. Principles of modular arithmetic have been elegantly used in the proposed idea of the cipher. Depending on observations of the results of implementation of the proposed cipher on a set of real data files of several types, all results are registered and analyzed. The strength of the underlying design of the cipher and the l…
Secure communication is a necessity. However, encryption is commonly only applied to the upper layers of the protocol stack. This exposes network information to eavesdroppers, including the channel's type, data rate, protocol, and routing information. This may be solved by encrypting the physical layer, thereby securing all subsequent layers. In order for this method to be practical, the encryption must be quick, preserve bandwidth, and must also deal with the issues of noise mitigation and synchronization. In this paper, we present the Vernam Physical Signal Cipher (VPSC): a novel cipher whic…
This paper presents a spatial encryption technique for secured transmission of data in networks. The algorithm is designed to break the ciphered data packets into multiple data which are to be packaged into a spatial template. A secure and efficient mechanism is provided to convey the information that is necessary for obtaining the original data at the receiver-end from its parts in the packets. An authentication code (MAC) is also used to ensure authenticity of every packet.
Security in embedded systems has become a main requirement in modern electronic devices. The demand for low-cost and highly secure cryptographic algorithms is increasingly growing in fields such as mobile telecommunications, handheld devices, etc. In this paper, we analyze and evaluate the development of cheap and relatively fast hardware implementations of the KATAN family of block ciphers. KATAN is a family of six hardware oriented block ciphers. All KATAN ciphers share an 80-bit key and have 32, 48, or 64-bit blocks. We use VHDL under Altera Quartus in conjunction with ModelSim to implement…
The field of lightweight cryptography has been gaining popularity as traditional cryptographic techniques are challenging to implement in resource-limited environments. This research paper presents an approach to utilizing the ESP32 microcontroller as a hardware platform to implement a lightweight cryptographic algorithm. Our approach employs KATAN32, the smallest block cipher of the KATAN family, with an 80-bit key and 32-bit blocks. The algorithm requires less computational power as it employs an 80 unsigned 64-bit integer key for encrypting and decrypting data. During encryption, a data arr…
Cryptography is the study of methods of sending messages in disguised form so that only the intended recipients can remove the disguise and read the messages. Information security has become a very critical aspect of modern communication systems. With the global acceptance of the Internet as a medium of communication, virtually every computer in the world is connected to every other. It has created a new risk for the users of the computers with a constant threat of being hacked and being victims of data theft. In this connection data encryption has become an essential part of secure communicat…
In e-healthcare record systems (EHRS), attribute-based encryption (ABE) appears as a natural way to achieve fine-grained access control on health records. Some proposals exploit key-policy ABE (KP-ABE) to protect privacy in such a way that all users are associated with specific access policies and only the ciphertexts matching the users' access policies can be decrypted. An issue with KP-ABE is that it requires an a priori formulation of access policies during key generation, which is not always practicable in EHRS because the policies to access health records are sometimes determined after ke…
The paper describes several original cryptographic cipher modules (VSEM) that are based on using one time pseudorandom pad and pseudorandom transpositions. The VSEM includes 4 modules of encryption that can be applied in combinations. We studied ability of these modules to secure the private data against attacks and their speed of encryption. The VSEM encryption was implemented in Fendoff applications for mobile devices on iOS and Android platforms as well as in computer application running Window or Mac OS. We describe these applications designed to encrypt/decrypt various personal data such …
Security in TrustZone-enabled heterogeneous system-on-chip (SoC) is gaining increasing attention for several years. Mainly because this type of SoC can be found in more and more applications in servers or in the cloud. The inside-SoC communication layer is one of the main element of heterogeneous SoC; indeed all the data goes through it. Monitoring and controlling inside-SoC communications enables to fend off attacks before system corruption. In this article, we study the feasibility of encrypted data exchange between the secure software executed in a trusted execution environment (TEE) and th…
Large-scale quantum computing is a significant threat to classical public-key cryptography. In strong "quantum access" security models, numerous symmetric-key cryptosystems are also vulnerable. We consider classical encryption in a model which grants the adversary quantum oracle access to encryption and decryption, but where the latter is restricted to non-adaptive (i.e., pre-challenge) queries only. We define this model formally using appropriate notions of ciphertext indistinguishability and semantic security (which are equivalent by standard arguments) and call it QCCA1 in analogy to the cl…
Public key encryption with equality test (PKEET) supports to check whether two ciphertexts encrypted under different public keys contain the same message or not. PKEET has many interesting applications such as keyword search on encrypted data, encrypted data partitioning for efficient encrypted data management, personal health record systems, spam filtering in encrypted email systems and so on. However, the PKEET scheme lacks an authorization mechanism for a user to control the comparison of its ciphertexts with others. In 2015, Ma et al. introduce the notion of PKEET with flexible authorizati…
Chosen-ciphertext security, which guarantees confidentiality of encrypted messages even in the presence of a decryption oracle, has become the defacto notion of security for public-key encryption under active attack. In this manuscript, for the first time, we propose a new approach for constructing post-quantum cryptosystems secure against adaptive chosen ciphertext attack (CCA2-secure) in the standard model using the knapsack problem. The computational version of the knapsack problem is NP-hard. Thus, this problem is expected to be difficult to solve using quantum computers. Our construction …
Recently Lin et al. proposed a method of using the underdetermined BSS (blind source separation) problem to realize image and speech encryption. In this paper, we give a cryptanalysis of this BSS-based encryption and point out that it is not secure against known/chosen-plaintext attack and chosen-ciphertext attack. In addition, there exist some other security defects: low sensitivity to part of the key and the plaintext, a ciphertext-only differential attack, divide-and-conquer (DAC) attack on part of the key. We also discuss the role of BSS in Lin et al.'s efforts towards cryptographically se…
The growing potential of modern communications needs the use of secure means to protect information from unauthorized access and use during transmission. In general, encryption a message using cryptography techniques and then hidden a message with a steganography methods provides an additional layer of protection. Furthermore, using these combination reduces the chance of finding the hidden message. This paper proposed a system which combines schemes of cryptography with steganography for hiding secret messages and to add more complexity for steganography. The proposed system secret message en…
