We prove a Caratheodory-Fejer type interpolation theorem for certain matrix convex sets in $\C^d$ using the Blecher-Ruan-Sinclair characterization of abstract operator algebras. Our results generalize the work of Dmitry S. Kalyuzhnyi-Verbovetzkii for the d-dimensional non-commutative polydisc.
The Carathéodory problem in the $N$-variable non-commutative Herglotz--Agler class and the Carathéodory--Fejér problem in the $N$-variable non-commutative Schur--Agler class are posed. It is shown that the Carathéodory (resp., Carathéodory--Fejér) problem has a solution if and only if the non-commutative polynomial with given operator coefficients (the data of the problem indexed by an admissible set $Λ$) takes operator values with positive semidefinite real part (resp., contractive operator values) on $N$-tuples of $Λ$-jointly nilpotent contractive $n\times n$ matrices, for all $n\in\mathbb{N…
We give an algorithm for finding a solution to the Carathéodory-Fejér interpolation problem on the polydisc $\mathbb D^n,$ whenever it exists. A necessary condition for the existence of a solution becomes apparent from this algorithm. A generalization of the well-known theorem due to Nehari has been obtained. A proof of the Korányi--Pukánszky theorem is given using the spectral theorem.
In this paper we study the Nevanlinna-Pick matrix interpolation problem in the Carathéodory class with infinite data (both in the nondegenerate and degenerate cases). We develop the Szökefalvi-Nagy and Korányi operator approach to obtain an analytic description of all solutions of the problem. Simple necessary and sufficient conditions for the determinacy of the problem are given.
We study Caratheodory-Herglotz functions whose values are continuous operators from a locally convex topological space which admits the factorization property into its conjugate dual space. We show how this case can be reduced to the case of functions whose values are bounded operators from a Hilbert space into itself.
In this paper we obtain a multivariable commutator lifting inequality, which extends to several variables a recent result of Foias, Frazho, and Kaashoek. The inequality yields a multivariable lifting theorem generalizing the noncommutative commutant lifting theorem. This is used to solve new operator-valued interpolation problems of Schur-Caratheodory, Nevanlinna-Pick, and Sarason type on Fock spaces. Some consequences to norm constrained analytic interpolation in the unit ball of C^n are also considered.
In this paper we formulate and solve Nevanlinna-Pick and Carathéodory type problems for tensor algebras with data given on the N-dimensional operator unit ball of a Hilbert space. We develop an approach based on the displacement structure theory.
It was recently shown that the theory of linear stochastic systems can be viewed as a particular case of the theory of linear systems on a certain commutative ring of power series in a countable number of variables. In the present work we study an interpolation problem in this setting. A key tool is the principle of permanence of algebraic identities.
An indefinite generalization of Nudel'man's problem is used in a systematic approach to interpolation theorems for generalized Schur and Nevanlinna functions with interior and boundary data. Besides results on existence criteria for Pick-Nevanlinna and Caratheodory-Fejer interpolation, the method yealds new results on generalized interpolation in the sense of Sarason and boundary interpolation, including properties of the finite Hilbert transform relative to weights. The main theorem appeals to the Ball and Helton almost-commutant lifting theorem to provide criteria for the existence of a solu…
We define a new notion of entropy for operators on Fock spaces and positive definite multi-Toeplitz kernels on free semigroups. This is studied in connection with factorization theorems for (multi-Toeplitz, multi-analytic, etc.) operators on Fock spaces. These results lead to entropy inequalities and entropy formulas for positive definite multi-Toeplitz kernels on free semigroups (resp.multi-Toeplitz operators) and consequences concerning the extreme points of the unit ball of the noncommutative analytic Toeplitz algebra F_n^\infty. We obtain several geometric characterizations of the multivar…
We give an equivalent expression for the $K$-functional associated to the pair of operator spaces $(R,C)$ formed by the rows and columns respectively. This yields a description of the real interpolation spaces for the pair $(M_n(R), M_n(C))$ (uniformly over $n$). More generally, the same result is valid when $M_n$ (or $B(\ell_2)$) is replaced by any semi-finite von Neumann algebra. We prove a version of the non-commutative Khintchine inequalities (originally due to Lust--Piquard) that is valid for the Lorentz spaces $L_{p,q}(τ)$ associated to a non-commutative measure $τ$, simultaneously for t…
We present an operator version of the Callebaut inequality involving the interpolation paths and apply it to the weighted operator geometric means. We also establish a matrix version of the Callebaut inequality and as a consequence obtain an inequality including the Hadamard product of matrices.
The paper makes the first steps into the study of extensions ("twisted sums") of noncommutative $L^p$-spaces regarded as Banach modules over the underlying von Neumann algebra $\mathcal M$. Our approach combines Kalton's description of extensions by centralizers (these are certain maps which are, in general, neither linear nor bounded) with a general principle, due to Rochberg and Weiss saying that whenever one finds a given Banach space $Y$ as an intermediate space in a (complex) interpolation scale, one automatically gets a self-extension $ 0\longrightarrow Y\longrightarrow X\longrightarrow …
We introduce a "dual-space approach" to mixed Nevanlinna-Pick/Carathéodory-Schur interpolation in Banach spaces X of holomorphic functions on the disk. Our approach can be viewed as complementary to the well-known commutant lifting approach of D. Sarason and B. Nagy-C.Foiaş. We compute the norm of the minimal interpolant in X by a version of the Hahn-Banach theorem, which we use to extend functionals defined on a subspace of kernels without increasing their norm. This Functional extensions lemma plays a similar role as Sarason's Commutant lifting theorem but it only involves the predual of X a…
We give an elementary proof that the $H^p$ spaces over the unit disc (or the upper half plane) are the interpolation spaces for the real method of interpolation between $H^1$ and $H^\infty$. This was originally proved by Peter Jones. The proof uses only the boundedness of the Hilbert transform and the classical factorisation of a function in $H^p$ as a product of two functions in $H^q$ and $H^r$ with $1/q+1/r=1/p$. This proof extends without any real extra difficulty to the non-commutative setting and to several Banach space valued extensions of $H^p$ spaces. In particular, this proof easily e…
We continue an investigation started in a preceding paper. We discuss the classical results of Carleson connecting Carleson measures with the $\d$-equation in a slightly more abstract framework than usual. We also consider a more recent result of Peter Jones which shows the existence of a solution of the $\d$-equation, which satisfies simultaneously a good $L_ı$ estimate and a good $L_1$ estimate. This appears as a special case of our main result which can be stated as follows: Let $(Ω,\cal{A},μ)$ be any measure space. Consider a bounded operator $u:H^1\ra L_1(μ)$. Assume that on one hand $u$ …
Henkin functionals on non-commutative $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras have recently emerged as a pivotal link between operator theory and complex function theory in several variables. Our aim in this paper is characterize these functionals through a notion of absolute continuity, inspired by a seminal theorem of Cole and Range. To do this, we recast the problem as a question in non-commutative measure theory. We develop a Glicksberg--König--Seever decomposition of the dual space of a $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra into an absolutely continuous part and a singular part, relative to a fixed convex subset of sta…
We provide an effective single-matrix criterion, in terms of what we call the elementary Pick matrix, for the solvability of the noncommutative Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem in the row ball, and provide some applications. In particular we show that the so-called "column-row property" fails for the free semigroup algebras, in stark contrast to the analogous commutative case. Additional applications of the elementary Pick matrix include a local dilation theorem for matrix row contractions and interpolating sequences in the noncommutative setting. Finally we present some numerical results…
We introduce the notion of a regular mapping on a non-commutative $L_p$-space associated to a hyperfinite von Neumann algebra for $1\le p\le \infty$. This is a non-commutative generalization of the notion of regular or order bounded map on a Banach lattice. This extension is based on our recent paper [P3], where we introduce and study a non-commutative version of vector valued $L_p$-spaces. In the extreme cases $p=1$ and $p=\infty$, our regular operators reduce to the completely bounded ones and the regular norm coincides with the $cb$-norm. We prove that a mapping is regular iff it is a linea…
Our starting point is a lemma due to Varopoulos. We give a different proof of a generalized form this lemma, that yields an equivalent description of the $K$-functional for the interpolation couple $(X_0,X_1)$ where $X_0=L_{p_0,\infty}(μ_1; L_q(μ_2))$ and $X_1=L_{p_1,\infty}(μ_2; L_q(μ_1))$ where $0<q<p_0,p_1\le \infty$ and $(Ω_1,μ_1), (Ω_2,μ_2)$ are arbitrary measure spaces. When $q=1$, this implies that the space $(X_0,X_1)_{θ,\infty}$ ($0<θ<1$) can be identified with a certain space of operators. We also give an extension of the Varopoulos Lemma to pairs (or finite families) of conditional …
Let $\Free_n$ denote the free group with $n$ generators $g_1, g_2, ..., g_n$. Let $λ$ stand for the left regular representation of $\Free_n$ and let $τ$ be the standard trace associated to $λ$. Given any positive integer $d$, we study the operator space structure of the subspace $\Word_p(n,d)$ of $L_p(τ)$ generated by the family of operators $λ(g_{i_1}g_{i_2} ... g_{i_d})$ with $1 \le i_k \le n$. Moreover, our description of this operator space holds up to a constant which does not depend on $n$ or $p$, so that our result remains valid for infinitely many generators. We also consider the subsp…
The class of Schur-Agler functions over a domain ${\mathcal D} \subset {\mathbb C}^{d}$ is defined as the class of holomorphic operator-valued functions on ${\mathcal D}$ for which a certain von Neumann inequality is satisfied when a commuting tuple of operators satisfying a certain polynomial norm inequality is plugged in for the variables. Such functions are alternatively characterized as those having a linear-fractional presentation which identifies them as transfer functions of a certain type of conservative structured multidimensional linear system. There now has been introduced a noncomm…
