For a semialgebraic set K in R^n, let P_d(K) be the cone of polynomials in R^n of degrees at most d that are nonnegative on K. This paper studies the geometry of its boundary. When K=R^n and d is even, we show that its boundary lies on the irreducible hypersurface defined by the discriminant of a single polynomial. When K is a real algebraic variety, we show that P_d(K) lies on the hypersurface defined by the discriminant of several polynomials. When K is a general semialgebraic set, we show that P_d(K) lies on a union of hypersurfaces defined by the discriminantal equations. Explicit formulae for the degrees of these hypersurfaces and discriminants are given. We also prove that typically P_d(K) does not have a log-polynomial type barrier, but a log-semialgebraic type barrier exits. Some illustrating examples are shown.
We provide a specific representation of convex polynomials nonnegative on a convex (not necessarily compact) basic closed semi-algebraic subset K of Rn. Namely, they belong to a specific subset of the quadratic module generated by the concave polynomials that define K.
In this article we combine two developments in polynomial optimization. On the one hand, we consider nonnegativity certificates based on sums of nonnegative circuit polynomials, which were recently introduced by the second and the third author. On the other hand, we investigate geometric programming methods for constrained polynomial optimization problems, which were recently developed by Ghasemi and Marshall. We show that the combination of both results yields a new method to solve certain classes of constrained polynomial optimization problems. We test the new method experimentally and compa…
Recently, the second and the third author developed sums of nonnegative circuit polynomials (SONC) as a new certificate of nonnegativity for real polynomials, which is independent of sums of squares. In this article we show that the SONC cone is full-dimensional in the cone of nonnegative polynomials. We establish a Positivstellensatz which guarantees that every polynomial which is positive on a given compact, semi-algebraic set can be represented by the constraints of the set and SONC polynomials. Based on this Positivstellensatz we provide a hierarchy of lower bounds converging against the m…
We study polyhedral approximations to the cone of nonnegative polynomials. We show that any constant ratio polyhedral approximation to the cone of nonnegative degree $2d$ forms in $n$ variables has to have exponentially many facets in terms of $n$. We also showthat for fixed $m \geq 3$, all linear $m$ dimensional sections of the nonnegative cone that include $(x_1^2+x_2^2+\ldots + x_n^2)^d$ has a costant ratio polyhedral approximation with $O(n^{m-2})$ many facets. Our approach is convex geometric, and parts of the argument rely on the recent solution of Kadison-Singer problem. We also discuss…
Various key problems from theoretical computer science can be expressed as polynomial optimization problems over the boolean hypercube. One particularly successful way to prove complexity bounds for these types of problems are based on sums of squares (SOS) as nonnegativity certificates. In this article, we initiate the analysis of optimization problems over the boolean hypercube via a recent, alternative certificate called sums of nonnegative circuit polynomials (SONC). We show that key results for SOS based certificates remain valid: First, for polynomials, which are nonnegative over the $n$…
We study separable plus quadratic (SPQ) polynomials, i.e., polynomials that are the sum of univariate polynomials in different variables and a quadratic polynomial. Motivated by the fact that nonnegative separable and nonnegative quadratic polynomials are sums of squares, we study whether nonnegative SPQ polynomials are (i) the sum of a nonnegative separable and a nonnegative quadratic polynomial, and (ii) a sum of squares. We establish that the answer to question (i) is positive for univariate plus quadratic polynomials and for convex SPQ polynomials, but negative already for bivariate quarti…
Let A be a finite subset of N^n and R[x]_A be the space of real polynomials whose monomial powers are from A. Let K be a compact basic semialgebraic set of R^n such that R[x]_A contains a polynomial that is positive on K. Denote by P_A(K) the cone of polynomials in R[x]_A that are nonnegative on K. The dual cone of P_A(K) is R_A(K), the set of all A-truncated moment sequences in R^A that admit representing measures supported in K. Our main results are: i) We study the properties of P_A(K) and R_A(K) (like interiors, closeness, duality, memberships), and construct a convergent hierarchy of semi…
The problem of optimizing over the cone of nonnegative polynomials is a fundamental problem in computational mathematics, with applications to polynomial optimization, control, machine learning, game theory, and combinatorics, among others. A number of breakthrough papers in the early 2000s showed that this problem, long thought to be out of reach, could be tackled by using sum of squares programming. This technique however has proved to be expensive for large-scale problems, as it involves solving large semidefinite programs (SDPs). In the first part of this thesis, we present two methods for…
