We report on a 95ks Chandra observation of the TeV emitting High Mass X-ray Binary LSI +61 303, using the ACIS-S camera in Continuos Clocking mode to search for a possible X-ray pulsar in this system. The observation was performed while the compact object was passing from phase 0.94 to 0.98 in its orbit around the Be companion star (hence close to the apastron passage). We did not find any periodic or quasi-periodic signal (at this orbital phase) in a frequency range of 0.005-175 Hz. We derived an average pulsed fraction 3 sigma upper limit for the presence of a periodic signal of ~10% (although this limit is strongly dependent on the frequency and the energy band), the deepest limit ever reached for this object. Furthermore, the source appears highly variable in flux and spectrum even in this very small orbital phase range, in particular we detect two flares, lasting thousands of seconds, with a very hard X-ray spectrum with respect to the average source spectral distribution. The X-ray pulsed fraction limits we derived are lower than the pulsed fraction of any isolated rotational-powered pulsar, in particular having a TeV counterpart. In this scenario most of the X-ray emission of LSI +61 303 should necessarily come from the interwind or inner-pulsar wind zone shock rather than from the magnetosphere of the putative pulsar. Furthermore, we did not find evidence for the previously suggested extended X-ray emission (abridged).
We estimate the mass of the compact object in the gamma-ray binaries LSI+61303 and MWC 148, using the latest data for the inclination, orbital motion and assuming that the orbital plane coincides with the equatorial plane of the Be star. For LSI+61303 we find the mass of the compact object to be most likely in the range 1.3 M_sun < M_2 < 2.0 M_sun, which means that it is probably a neutron star. For MWC 148, we find the mass of the compact object in a higher range, 2.1 M_sum < M_2 < 7.3 M_sun, which increases the chances for this system to host a black hole companion.
In recent years, fundamental relationships for the black hole X-ray binaries have been established between their X-ray luminosity $L_X$ and the photon index $Γ$ of their X-ray spectrum. For the moderate-luminosity regime, an anti-correlation between $Γ$ and $L_X$ has been observed. In this article, aimed to verify if the moderate luminous X-ray binary system LSI +61303 is a black hole, we analyse $Swift$ observations of LSI +61303. We compare the derived $L_X$ vs $Γ$ distribution, first with the statistical trend for black hole X-ray binaries, then with the trend of the pulsar PSR B1259-63, an…
LSI +61 303 is one of the few X-ray binaries with a Be star companion from which radio, X-rays and high-energy gamma-ray (GeV and TeV) emission have been observed. The nature of the high energy activity of the system is not yet fully understood, but it is widely believed that it is generated due to the interaction of the relativistic electrons leaving the compact object with the photons and non-relativistic wind of the Be star. The superorbital variability of the system has been observed in the radio, optical and X-ray domains and could be due to the cyclic change of the Be star disk size. In …
We have compiled the most complete census of High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) in the Small Magellanic Cloud with the aim to investigate the formation efficiency of young accreting binaries in its low metallicity environment. In total, we use 127 X-ray sources with detections in our \chandra X-ray Visionary Program (XVP), supplemented by 14 additional (likely and confirmed) HMXBs identified by \cite{2016A&A...586A..81H} that fall within the XVP area, but are not either detected in our survey (9 sources) or matched with any XVP source that has at least one OB counterpart in the OGLE-III catalog …
Binary-single and binary-binary encounters play a pivotal role in the evolution of star clusters, as they may lead to the disruption or hardening of binaries, a novel prediction of the Hills-Heggie law. Based on our recent {\it Chandra} survey of Galactic globular clusters (GCs), we revisit the role of stellar dynamical interactions in GCs, focusing on main-sequence (MS) binary encounters as a potential formation channel of the observed X-ray sources in GCs. We show that the cumulative X-ray luminosity ($L_X$), a proxy of the total number of X-ray-emitting binaries (primarily cataclysmic varia…
We present the first X-ray study of Collinder 261 (Cr261), which at an age of 7 Gyr is one of the oldest open clusters known in the Galaxy. Our observation with the Chandra X-ray Observatory is aimed at uncovering the close interacting binaries in Cr261, and reaches a limiting X-ray luminosity of Lx ~ 4e29 erg/s (0.3-7 keV) for stars in the cluster. We detect 107 sources within the cluster half-mass radius r_h, and we estimate that among the sources with Lx >~ 1e30 erg/s, ~26 are associated with the cluster. We identify a mix of active binaries and candidate active binaries, candidate cataclys…
Optical and near-infrared observations are compiled for the three gamma-ray binaries hosting Be stars: PSR B1259-63, LSI+61 303, and HESS J0632+057. The emissions from the Be disk are considered to vary according to the changes in its structure, some of which are caused by interactions with the compact object (e.g., tidal forces). Due to the high eccentricity and large orbit of these systems, the interactions -- and, hence the resultant observables -- depend on the orbital phase. To explore such variations, multi-band photometry and linear polarization were monitored for the three considered s…
We present results of new Chandra High-Energy Transmission Grating (HETG) observations (2019 November - December) of the massive Wolf-Rayet (WR) binary WR 48a. Analysis of these high-quality data showed that the spectral lines in this massive binary are broadened (FWHM = 1400 km/s) and marginally blushifted (~ -100 km/s). A direct modelling of these high-resolution spectra in the framework of the standard colliding stellar wind (CSW) picture provided a very good correspondence between the shape of the theoretical and observed spectra. Also, the theoretical line profiles are in most cases an ac…
We present a new X-ray study of NGC188, one of the oldest open clusters known in our Galaxy (7 Gyr). Our observation with the Chandra X-ray Observatory is aimed at uncovering the population of close interacting binaries in NGC188. We detect 84 sources down to a luminosity of Lx ~ 4e29 erg/s (0.3-7 keV), of which 73 are within the half-mass radius rh. Of the 60 sources inside rh with more than 5 counts, we estimate that ~38 are background sources. We detected 55 new sources, and confirmed 29 sources previously detected by ROSAT and/or XMM-Newton. A total of 13 sources detected are cluster membe…
We searched in the public archive of the Chandra X-ray Observatory as of March 2016 and assembled a sample of 719 galaxies within 50 Mpc with ACIS observations available. By cross-correlation with the optical or near-infrared nuclei of these galaxies, 314 of them are identified to have an X-ray active galactic nucleus (AGN). The majority of them are low-luminosity AGNs and are unlikely X-ray binaries based upon their spatial distribution and luminosity functions. The AGN fraction is around 60% for elliptical galaxies and early-type spirals, but drops to roughly 20% for Sc and later types, cons…
We used archival data from the \emph{Chandra X-ray Observatory} (\emph{Chandra}) and the \emph{Hubble Space Telescope}, to identify 334 candidate X-ray binary (XRB) systems and their potential optical counterparts in the interacting galaxy pair NGC 5194/5195 (M51). We present the catalog and data analysis of X-ray and optical properties for those sources, from the deep $892$ ks \emph{Chandra} observations, along with the magnitudes of candidate optical sources as measured in the $8.16$ ks \emph{HST} observations. The X-ray luminosity function of the X-ray sources above a few times $10^{36}\, {…
Here we report our first spectral observations of Be/X-ray and gamma-ray binaries obtained with the new Echelle spectrograph of the National Astronomical Observatory Rozhen. For four objects (LSI+61303, gamma Cas, MWC 148, 4U 2206+54), we report the parameters and estimate the sizes of their circumstellar discs using different emission lines (H-alpha, H-beta, H-gamma, HeI and FeII). For MWC 148, we find that the compact object goes deeply through the disc. The flank inflections of H-alpha can be connected with inner ring formed at the periastron passage or radiation transfer effects. We point …
We have obtained three epochs of Chandra ACIS-I observations (totaling $\sim$184 ks) of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC~300 to study the logN-logS distributions of its X-ray point source population down to $\sim$2$\times$10$^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ in the 0.35-8 keV band (equivalent to $\sim$10$^{36}$ erg s$^{-1}$). The individual epoch logN-logS distributions are best described as the sum of a background AGN component, a simple power law, and a broken power law, with the shape of the logN-logS distributions sometimes varying between observations. The simple power law and AGN components pro…
Based on archival {\it Chandra} data, we have carried out an X-ray survey of 69, or nearly half the known population of, Milky Way globular clusters (GCs), focusing on weak X-ray sources, mainly cataclysmic variables (CVs) and coronally active binaries (ABs). Using the cumulative X-ray luminosity per unit stellar mass (i.e., X-ray emissivity) as a proxy of the source abundance, we demonstrate a paucity (lower by $41\%\pm27\%$ on average) of weak X-ray sources in most GCs relative to the field, which is represented by the Solar neighborhood and Local Group dwarf elliptical galaxies. We also rev…
The narrow, neutral Fe Kα fluorescence emission line in X-ray binaries (XRBs) is a powerful probe of the geometry, kinematics and Fe abundance of matter around the accretion flow. In a recent study it has been claimed, using $Chandra$ High-Energy Transmission Grating (HETG) spectra for a sample of XRBs, that the circumnuclear material is consistent with a solar-abundance, uniform, spherical distribution. It was also claimed that the Fe Kα line was unresolved in all cases by the HETG. However, these conclusions were based on ad hoc models that did not attempt to relate the global column density…
Based on the Chandra data archive as of March 2016, we have identified 314 candidate active galactic nuclei in 719 galaxies located closer than 50 Mpc, among them late-type (Hubble types Sc and later) galaxies that previously had been classified from optical observations as containing star-forming (H II) nuclei. These late-type galaxies comprise a valuable subsample to search for low-mass (<~ 10^6 solar masses) central black holes. For the sample as a whole, the overall dependence of the fraction of active nuclei on galaxy type and nuclear spectral classification is consistent with previous re…
Astrometric noise in excess of parallax and proper motion could be a signature of orbital wobble of individual components in binary star systems. The combination of X-ray selection with astrometric noise can then be a powerful tool for identifying accreting binaries. Here, we mine the Gaia DR2 catalogue for Galactic sources with significant values of astrometric noise over the parameter space expected for known and candidate X-ray binaries (XRBs). Cross-matching our sample with the Chandra Source Catalogue CSC2.0 returns a primary sample of ~1,500 X-ray sources with significant excess noise, c…
We have carried out an in-depth study of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) detected in the nearby lenticular galaxy NGC 3115, using the Megasecond Chandra X-Ray Visionary Project observation (total exposure time 1.1 Ms). In total we found 136 candidate LMXBs in the field and 49 in globular clusters (GCs) above 2σ detection, with 0.3--8 keV luminosity L_X ~10^36-10^39 erg/s. Other than 13 transient candidates, the sources overall have less long-term variability at higher luminosity, at least at L_X > 2x10^37 erg/s. In order to identify the nature and spectral state of our sources, we compared the…
Based on the recently completed {\it Chandra}/ACIS survey of X-ray point sources in nearby galaxies, we study the X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) for X-ray point sources in different types of galaxies and the statistical properties of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). Uniform procedures are developed to compute the detection threshold, to estimate the foreground/background contamination, and to calculate the XLFs for individual galaxies and groups of galaxies, resulting in an XLF library for 343 galaxies of different types. With the large number of surveyed galaxies, we have studied the XL…
The dust properties of the line-of-sight materials in neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) can be probed by X-ray observations and laboratory experiments. We use a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method to conduct a spectral analysis of Chandra ACIS-S/HETG archival data of a sample of LMXBs, including GX 5-1 and GX 13+1. Our MCMC-based analysis puts constraints on the Si K-edge dust properties of the outflowing disk winds in this sample. Further X-ray observations of other LMXBs will help us better understand the grain features of dense outflows and accretion flows in neutron star bina…
We have compiled a comprehensive library of all X-ray observations of Magellanic pulsars carried out by {\it XMM-Newton}, {\it Chandra}, and {\it RXTE} in the period 1997-2014. In this work, we use the data from 53 high-mass Be/X-ray binaries in the Small Magellanic Cloud to demonstrate that the distribution of spin-period derivatives vs. spin periods of spinning-down pulsars is not at all different than that of the accreting spinning-up pulsars. The inescapable conclusion is that the up and down samples were drawn from the same continuous parent population, therefore Be/X-ray pulsars that are…
Galactic transients, X-ray and gamma-ray binaries provide a proper environment for particle acceleration. This leads to the production of gamma rays with energies reaching the GeV-TeV regime. MAGIC has carried out deep observations of different transient and variable stellar objects of which we highlight 4 of them here: LSI+61 303, MWC 656, Cygnus X-1 and SN 2014J. We present the results of those observations, including long-term monitoring of Cygnus X-1 and LSI+61 303 (7 and 8 years, respectively). The former is one of the brightest X-ray sources and best studied microquasars across a broad r…
Globular clusters host a variety of lower-luminosity ($L_X<10^{35}$ erg s$^{-1}$) X-ray sources, including accreting neutron stars and black holes, millisecond pulsars, cataclysmic variables, and chromospherically active binaries. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive catalog of more than 1100 X-ray sources in 38 Galactic globular clusters observed by the Chandra X-ray Observatory's ACIS detector. The targets are selected to complement the MAVERIC survey's deep radio continuum maps of Galactic globular clusters. We perform photometry and spectral analysis for each source, determine a best-…
The NuSTAR serendipitous survey has already uncovered a large number of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), providing new information about the composition of the Cosmic X-ray Background. For the AGN off the Galactic plane, it has been possible to use the existing X-ray archival data to improve source localizations, identify optical counterparts, and classify the AGN with optical spectroscopy. However, near the Galactic Plane, better X-ray positions are necessary to achieve optical or near-IR identifications due to the higher levels of source crowding. Thus, we have used observations with the Chandr…
A large number of unidentified sources found by astronomical surveys and other observations necessitate the use of an automated classification technique based on machine learning methods. The aim of this paper is to find a suitable automated classifier to identify the point X-ray sources in the Chandra Source Catalogue (CSC) 2.0 in the categories of active galactic nuclei (AGN), X-ray emitting stars, young stellar objects (YSOs), high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), ultra luminous X-ray sources (ULXs), cataclysmic variables (CVs), and pulsars. The catalogue consis…

Four VY Scl-type nova-like systems were observed in X-rays during both the low and the high optical states. We examined Chandra, ROSAT, Swift and Suzaku archival observations of BZ Cam, MV Lyr, TT Ari, and V794 Aql. The X-ray flux of BZ Cam is higher during the low state, but there is no supersoft X-ray source (SSS) as hypothesized in previous articles. No SSS was detected in the low state of the any of the other systems, with the X-ray flux decreasing by a factor between 2 and 50. The best fit to the Swift X-ray spectra is obtained with a multi-component model of plasma in collisional ionizat…
