In this article, we consider singular equivariant arithmetic schemes whose generic fibres are smooth. For such schemes, we prove a relative fixed point formula of Lefschetz type in the context of Arakelov geometry. This formula is an analog, in the arithmetic case, of the Lefschetz formula proved by R. W. Thomason. In particular, our result implies a fixed point formula which was conjectured by V. Maillot and D. Rössler.
For an algebraic K3 surface with complex multiplication (CM), algebraic fibres of the associated twistor space away from the equator are again of CM type. In this paper, we show that algebraic fibres corresponding to points at the same altitude of the twistor base $S^2\simeq \mathbb{P}^1_\mathbb{C}$ share the same CM endomorphism field. Moreover, we determine all the admissible Picard numbers of the twistor fibres.
In this article, we consider regular projective arithmetic schemes in the context of Arakelov geometry, any of which is endowed with an action of the diagonalisable group scheme associated to a finite cyclic group and with an equivariant very ample invertible sheaf. For any equivariant morphism between such arithmetic schemes, which is smooth over the generic fibre, we define a direct image map between corresponding higher equivariant arithmetic K-groups and we discuss its transitivity property. Then we use the localization sequence of higher arithmetic K-groups and the higher arithmetic conce…
In this paper we prove a concentration theorem for arithmetic $K_0$-theory, this theorem can be viewed as an analog of R. Thomason's result in the arithmetic case. We will use this arithmetic concentration theorem to prove a relative fixed point formula of Lefschetz type in the context of Arakelov geometry. Such a formula was conjectured of a slightly stronger form by K. Köhler and D. Roessler and they also gave a correct route of its proof. Nevertheless our new proof is much simpler since it looks more natural and it doesn't involve too many complicated computations.
We prove the arithmetic Hodge index and hard Lefschetz conjectures for the Grassmannian $G=G(2,N)$ parametrizing lines in projective space, for the natural arithmetic Lefschetz operator defined via the Plücker embedding of $G$ in projective space. The analysis of the Hodge index inequalities involves estimates on certain Racah polynomials.
We consider the suspension operation on Lefschetz fibrations, which takes p(x) to p(x)-y^2. This leaves the Fukaya category of the fibration invariant, and changes the category of the fibre (or more precisely, the subcategory consisting of a basis of vanishing cycles) in a specific way. As an application, we prove part of Homological Mirror Symmetry for the total spaces of canonical bundles over toric del Pezzo surfaces.
This is the second of a series of papers dealing with an analog in Arakelov geometry of the holomorphic Lefschetz fixed point formula. We use the main result of the first paper to prove a residue formula "`a la Bott" for arithmetic characteristic classes living on arithmetic varieties acted upon by a diagonalisable torus; recent results of Bismut-Goette on the equivariant (Ray-Singer) analytic torsion play a key role in the proof.
We prove the Noether-Lefschetz conjecture on the moduli space of quasi-polarized K3 surfaces. This is deduced as a particular case of a general theorem that states that low degree cohomology classes of arithmetic manifolds of orthogonal type are dual to the classes of special cycles, i.e. sub-arithmetic manifolds of the same type. For compact manifolds this was proved in \cite{BMM11}, here we extend the results of \cite{BMM11} to non-compact manifolds. This allows us to apply our results to the moduli spaces of quasi-polarized K3 surfaces.
Let $f: X \to Y$ be a dominant morphism of smooth, proper and geometrically integral varieties over a number field $k$, with geometrically integral generic fibre. We give a necessary and sufficient geometric criterion for the induced map $X(k_v) \to Y(k_v)$ to be surjective for almost all places $v$ of $k$. This generalizes a result of Denef which had previously been conjectured by Colliot-Thélène, and can be seen as an optimal geometric version of the celebrated Ax-Kochen theorem.
----- We construct three families of automorphic forms following the arithmetic Riemann-Roch theorem and the arithmetic Lefschetz formula. Two of these families were already constructed by Yoshikawa and our construction illuminates their arithmetic origin.
Looking in positive characteristic for failures of the Bertini-Sard theorem, we determine, up to birational equivalence, the separable proper morphisms of smooth algebraic varieties in characteristic two, whose fibres are non-smooth curves of arithmetic genus two.
Let $S$ be a Dedekind scheme with perfect residue fields at closed points, let $f: X\rightarrow S$ be a minimal regular arithmetic surface of fibre genus at least $2$ and let $f': X'\rightarrow S$ be the canonical model of $f$. It is well known that $ω_{X'/S}$ is relatively ample. In this paper we prove that $ω_{X'/S}^{\otimes n}$ is relative very ample for all $n\geq 3$.
The goal of this article is to try understand where Hodge cycles on a singular complex projective variety X come from. As a first step we consider Hodge cycles on the maximal pure quotient $H^{2p}(X)/W_{2p-1}$, and introduce a class of algebraic cycles that we call homologically Cartier, that should conjecturally describe all such Hodge cycles. Secondly, given a singular complex projective variety $X$, we show that there is a cycle map from motivic cohomology group $H^{2p}_M(X,Q(p))$ to the space of weight 2p Hodge cycles in $H^{2p}(X,Q)$. We conjecture that this is surjective when X is define…
We give a new proof of a slightly weaker form of a theorem of P. Colmez. This theorem gives a formula for the Faltings height of abelian varieties with complex multiplication by a C.M. field whose Galois group over $\bf Q$ is abelian; it reduces to the formula of Chowla and Selberg in the case of elliptic curves. We show that the formula can be deduced from the arithmetic fixed point formula proved in the first paper of the series. Our proof is intrinsic in the sense that it does not rely on the computation of the periods of any particular abelian variety.
To study problems involving heights as, eg, Manin's conjecture on the number of points of bounded height on an algebraic variety defined over a number field, it is desirable to have a good normalization of these height functions. We show how one can define these on fiber spaces. The construction uses the notion of an ``arithmetic torsor'', which is the analogue for a general algebraic group of adding a hermitian metric at infinity for vector bundles.
We prove that for a generic Lefschetz pencil of plane curves of degree $d\geq 3$ there exists a curve $H$ (called the Hesse curve of the pencil) of degree $6(d-1)$ and genus $3(4d^2-13d+8)+1$, and such that: $(i)$ $H$ has $d^2$ singular points of multiplicity three at the base points of the pencil and $3(d-1)^2$ ordinary nodes at the singular points of the degenerate members of the pencil; $(ii)$ for each member of the pencil the intersection of $H$ with this fibre consists of the inflection points of this member and the base points of the pencil.
We revisit the abstract framework underlying the fibration method for producing rational points on the total space of fibrations over the projective line. By fine-tuning its dependence on external arithmetic conjectures, we render the method unconditional when the degree of the non-split locus is $\leq 2$, as well as in various instances where it is $3$. We are also able to obtain improved results in the regime that is conditionally accessible under Schinzel's hypothesis, by incorporating into it, for the first time, a technique due to Harari for controlling the Brauer--Manin obstruction in fa…
We generalise a formula of Shou-Wu Zhang, which describes local arithmetic intersection numbers of three Cartier divisors with support in the special fibre on a a self-product of a semi-stable arithmetic surface using elementary analysis. By an approximation argument, Zhang extends his formula to a formula for local arithmetic intersection numbers of three adelic metrized line bundles on the self-product of a curve with trivial underlying line bundle. Using the results on intersection theory from arXiv:1404.1623 [math.AG] we generalize these results to d-fold self-products for arbitrary d. For…
Our main goal in the present article is to explain how one can reconstruct the decomposition subgroups and norms of points on an arithmetic curve inside its fundamental group if the following data are given: the fundamental group, a part of the cyclotomic character and the family of the regulators of the fields corresponding to the generic points of all étale covers of the given curve. The approach is inspired by that of Tamagawa for curves over finite fields but uses Tsfasman-Vlăduţ theorem instead of Lefschetz trace formula. To the authors' knowledge, this is a new technique in the anabelian…
Given a surjective endomorphism $f: X \to X$ on a projective variety over a number field, one can define the arithmetic degree $α_f(x)$ of $f$ at a point $x$ in $X$. The Kawaguchi - Silverman Conjecture (KSC) predicts that any forward $f$-orbit of a point $x$ in $X$ at which the arithmetic degree $α_f(x)$ is strictly smaller than the first dynamical degree $δ_f$ of $f$ is not Zariski dense. We extend the KSC to sAND (= small Arithmetic Non-Density) Conjecture that the locus $Z_f(d)$ of all points of small arithmetic degree is not Zariski dense, and verify this sAND Conjecture for endomorphisms…
