We review recent results from computer simulation studies of polymer glasses, from chain dynamics around the glass transition temperature Tg to the mechanical behaviour below Tg. These results clearly show that modern computer simulations are able to address and give clear answers to some important issues in the field, in spite of the obvious limitations in terms of length and time scales. In the present review we discuss the cooling rate effects, and dynamic slowing down of different relaxation processes when approaching Tg for both model and chemistry-specific polymer glasses. The impact of geometric confinement on the glass transition is discussed in detail. We also show that computer simulations are very useful tools to study structure and mechanical response of glassy polymers. The influence of large deformations on mechanical behaviour of polymer glasses in general, and strain hardening effect in particular are reviewed. Finally, we suggest some directions for future research, which we believe will be soon within the capabilities of state of the art computer simulations, and correspond to problems of fundamental interest.
Glassy carbon is a graphene-rich form of elemental carbon obtained from pyrolysis of polymers, which is composed of three-dimensionally arranged, curved graphene fragments alongside fractions of disordered carbon and voids. Pyrolysis encompasses gradual heating of polymers above 900 degree C under inert atmosphere, followed by cooling to room temperature. Here we report on an experimental method to perform in situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) for the direct visualization of microstructural evolution in a pyrolyzing polymer in the 500-1200 degree C temperature range…
Considerable recent attention has been given to the study of shape formation using modern responsive materials that can be preprogrammed to undergo spatially inhomogeneous local deformations. In particular, nematic liquid crystal polymer networks offer exciting possibilities in this context. In this paper, we discuss the generation of Gaussian curvature in thin nematic sheets using smooth in-plane director fields patterned across the surface. We highlight specific patterns which encode constant Gaussian curvature of prescribed sign and magnitude and present experimental results which appear to…
Using molecular dynamics simulations, we provide chain-level insights into the dissimilarities in rearrangements of polymers under uniaxial tensile and compressive deformation in glassy and semicrystalline samples of varying chain lengths. The organization of polymers under tension and compression is distinctively different. The chains align themselves along the tensile axis leading to a net global nematic ordering of their bonds and end-to-end vectors whereas under compression, the polymers arrange themselves in a plane perpendicular to the compressive axis resulting in emergence of an anti-n…
The dynamics of polymer surfaces is a controversial subject. Many experimental evidences support the existence of a surface mobile layer, while there are a few equally strong experimental evidences that contradict it. Here we show, through careful studies of the topological evolution of nanometer-size ridges and ditches on rubbed polystyrene surfaces, that there is indeed a surface rubbery layer whose mobility decreases rapidly with depth. The segments in the layer can only be displaced by a finite distance comparable to the depth. The temperature and depth dependence of the surface effective …
We study the free-surface deformation dynamics of an immersed glassy thin polymer film supported on a substrate, induced by an air nanobubble at the free surface. We combine analytical and numerical treatments of the glassy thin film equation, resulting from the lubrication approximation applied to the surface mobile layer of the glassy film, under the driving of an axisymmetric step function in the pressure term accounting for the nanobubble's Laplace pressure. Using the method of Green's functions, we derive a general solution for the film profile. We show that the lateral extent of the surfa…
We have used molecular dynamics to simulate an amorphous glassy polymer with long chains to study deformation mechanism of crazing and associated void statistics. The Van der Waals interactions and the entanglements between chains constituting the polymer play a crucial role in crazing. Thus, we have reconstructed two underlying weighted networks, namely, the Van der Waals network and the Entanglement network from polymer configurations extracted from the molecular dynamics simulation. Subsequently, we have performed graph-theoretic analysis of the two reconstructed networks to reveal the role…

Using molecular simulations and theory, we develop an explicit mapping of the contribution of molecular relaxation modes in glassy thermosets to the shear modulus, where the relaxations were tuned by altering the polarity of side groups. Specifically, motions at the domain, segmental, monomer, and atomic levels are taken from molecular dynamics snapshots and directly linked with the viscoelasticity through a framework based in the lattice dynamics of amorphous solids. This unique approach provides direct insight into the roles of chemical groups in the stress response, including the timescale …
Thin polymer films have striking dynamical properties that differ from their bulk counterparts. With the simple geometry of a stepped polymer film on a substrate, we probe mobility above and below the glass transition temperature $T_{\textrm{g}}$. Above $T_{\textrm{g}}$ the entire film flows, while below $T_{\textrm{g}}$ only the near surface region responds to the excess interfacial energy. An analytical thin film model for flow limited to the free surface region shows excellent agreement with sub-$T_{\textrm{g}}$ data. The system transitions from whole film flow to surface localized flow ove…
To test basic assumptions inherent to most theories of molecular liquids and glasses, Infrared spectroscopy is carried out on short polyalcohols at temperatures ranging from far above to far below their glass transition. By analyzing specific vibrations, the thermal expansion of covalent bonds and hydrogen bridges is determined revealing striking differences. A comparison with density verifies the negligibility of \textit{intra}molecular expansion but exposes severe inhomogeneities on \textit{inter}molecular scale. This signals distinct roles in glassy densification and promotes an atomistic u…

The structure and vibrational density of states (VDOS) of polymer glasses are investigated using numerical simulations based on the classical Kremer-Grest bead-spring model. We focus on the roles of chain length and bending stiffness, the latter being set by imposing three-body angular potentials along chain backbones. Upon increasing the chain length and bending stiffness, structural reorganisation leads to volumetric expansion of the material and build-up of internal stresses. The VDOS has two dominant bands: a low frequency one corresponding to inter- and intra-chain non-bonding interaction…
We show that in monomeric supercooled liquids and glasses that are plastically flowing at a constant shear stress $σ$ while being deformed with strain rate $\dotε$, the microscopic structural relaxation time $τ_{\rm str}$ is given by the universal relation $σ/G_\infty\dotε$ with $G_\infty$ a modulus. This equality holds for all rheological regimes from temperatures above the glass transition all the way to the athermal limit, and arises from the competing effects of elastic loading and viscous dissipation. In macromolecular (polymeric) glasses, however, the stress decouples from this relaxatio…

In this work, we present a new model for the interpretation of the local dynamic behavior and the mechanical reinforcement mechanism in polymer nanocomposites. The temperature dependence of the dynamics in the glassy region is described by a new equation which assumes an Arrhenius component in the cooperative diffusion. By doing so, a characteristic temperature which can be identified as the glass transition temperature (Tg) emerges, while an additional parameter for the extension of the super-Arrhenius region is incorporated. Based on thermodynamic arguments, the dynamical heterogeneities are…
Fracture initiation in glassy polymers with no notch is studied together with the evolution at zero stress in the glassy state. Confocal microscopy observations and auto-correlation methods are used to characterize specimens of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) loaded at room temperature and subsequently unloaded. The evolution of the morphology and the location of the cracking submitted to elongation rate up to 8% are reported and analyzed during the zero-stress relaxation. The crackling (longitudinal crack, transverse crack and crazes) takes place mainly within a 10micron thickness layer from t…
The relaxation of polymers around and below their glass transition temperature is governed by a range of correlated unit processes with a wide range of timescales. The fast deformation rates of shock loading can negate a significant fraction of these processes resulting in the dynamical glass transition in rubbers. In this letter we report the inverse, a transient melting of glassy polymer under shock loading. The large deviatoric stresses near the shock front induce fast transitions in backbone dihedral angles and a stress relaxation characteristic of polymer melts. This is followed by the sl…
Thermal conduction in polymer nanocomposites depends on several parameters including the thermal conductivity and geometrical features of the nanoparticles, the particle loading, their degree of dispersion and formation of a percolating networks. To enhance efficiency of thermal contact between free-standing conductive nanoparticles were previously proposed. This work report for the first time the investigation of molecular junctions within a graphene polymer nanocomposite. Molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to investigate the thermal transport efficiency of molecular junctions in p…
Polymer nanoparticle composites (PNC) with ultra high loading of nanoparticles (> 50%) have been shown to exhibit markedly improved strength, stiffness, and toughness simultaneously compared to the neat systems of their components. Recent experimental studies on the effect of polymer fill fraction in these highly loaded PNCs reveal that even at low polymer fill fractions, hardness and modulus increase significantly. In this work, we aim to understand the origin of these performance enhancements by examining the dynamics of both polymer and nanoparticles (NP) under tensile deformation. We perfo…

Polymer nanofibers with high thermal conductivities and outstanding thermal stabilities are highly desirable in heat transfer-critical applications such as thermal management, heat exchangers and energy storage. In this work, we unlock the fundamental relations between the thermal conductivity and thermal stability of polymer nanofibers and their molecular characteristics by studying the temperature-induced phase transitions and thermal transport of a series of polymer nanofibers. Ten different polymer nanofibers with systematically chosen molecular structures are studied using large scale mol…
Bonding between polymeric interfaces is encountered widely in several industrial applications. Many of these bonding processes rely on time-consuming and temperature-dependent classical mechanism of polymer interdiffusion via reptation in a melt state. Here, for the first time, we report a new mechanistic pathway for achieving solid-state polymer bonding by triggering rapid macromolecular acceleration through mechanical deformation. Large-scale molecular simulations reveal that active plastic deformation in glassy polymers, at temperatures well-below the bulk (and surface) glass transition tem…
Polystyrene and polyvinyl chloride thin films are explored as sample supports for extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectroscopy of molecular transition metal complexes. Thin polymer films prepared by slip-coating are flat, smooth, and transmit much more XUV light than silicon nitride windows. Analytes can be directly cast onto the polymer surface, or codeposited within it. The M-edge x-ray absorption near-edge (XANES) spectra (40-90 eV) of eight archetypal transition metal complexes (M=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) are presented to demonstrate the versatility of this method. The films are suitable for pump/probe t…
We report here a study of reversible pressure-induced structural transformation between two amorphous forms of SO$_2$: molecular at pressures below 26 GPa and polymeric above this pressure, at temperatures of 77 - 300 K. The transformation was observed by Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction in a diamond anvil cell. The same phenomenon was also observed in ab initio molecular dynamics simulations where both forward and reverse transitions were detected, allowing to analyze in detail the atomic structure of both phases. The high-pressure polymeric amorphous form was found to consist mainly …
The relaxation dynamics and thermodynamic properties of supercooled and glassy gambogic acid are investigated using both theory and experiment. We measure the temperature dependence of the relaxation times in three polymorphs (alpha-, beta-, and gamma-form). To gain insight into the relaxation processes, we propose a theoretical approach to quantitatively understand nature of these three relaxations. The alpha-relaxation captures cooperative motions of molecules while the beta-process is mainly governed by local dynamics of a single molecule within the cage formed by its nearest neighbors. Bas…
Molecular packing, crystallinity, and texture of semiconducting polymers are often critical to performance. Although frame-works exist to quantify the ordering, interpretations are often just qualitative, resulting in imprecise and liberal use of terminology. Here, we reemphasize the continuity of the degree of molecular ordering and advocate that a more nuanced and consistent terminology is used with regards to crystallinity, semicyrstallinity, paracrystallinity, crystallite/aggregate, and related characteristics. We are motivated in part by our own imprecise and inconsistent use of terminolo…
