The corotation radius in a spiral galaxy is the radius where the spiral pattern speed has the same velocity of the rotation curve. By compiling results from the literature for 20 spiral galaxies we verified a strong correlation between the radius of the minima or inflections of the metallicity distribution and the corotation radius.
We analyzed the relation between the corotation radii and the galactic radii at which breaks or changes of slope of the metallicity gradients occur in spiral galaxies. With this purpose we compiled the results from the literature on rotation curves, corotation radii and radial metallicity distributions of 27 galaxies, of which 16 were considered qualified to be studied in the context of this work. We re-scaled all references of each galaxy to a same framework in order to compare the results and to identify the radii where breaks and changes of slopes are found, when non-linear models fit the r…
We have applied the Tremaine-Weinberg method to 10 late-type barred spiral galaxies using data cubes, in H-alpha emission, from the GHAFAS and FANTOMM Fabry-Perot spectrometers. We have combined the derived bar (and/or spiral) pattern speeds with angular frequency plots to measure the corotation radii for the bars in these galaxies. We base our results on a combination of this method with a morphological analysis designed to estimate the corotation radius to bar-length ratio using two independent techniques on archival near infrared images, and although we are aware of the limitation of the ap…
We map the kinematics of stars in simulated galaxy disks with spiral arms using the velocity ellipsoid vertex deviation (l$_v$). We use test particle simulations, and for the first time, fully self-consistent high resolution N-body models. We compare our maps with the Tight Winding Approximation model analytical predictions. We see that for all barred models spiral arms rotate closely to a rigid body manner and the vertex deviation values correlate with the density peaks position bounded by overdense and underdense regions. In such cases, vertex deviation sign changes from negative to positive…
The pattern speeds of spiral galaxies are closely related to the flow of material in their disks. Flows that follow the `precessing ellipses' paradigm (see e.g., Kalnajs 1973) are likely associated with slowly rotating spirals, which have corotation beyond their end. Such a flow can be secured by material trapped around stable, elliptical, x_1 periodic orbits precessing as their Jacobi constant varies. Contrarily, if part of the spiral arms is located at a corotation region then the spiral structure has to `survive' in chaotic regions. Barred-spiral systems with a single pattern speed and a ba…
We analyze optical and near-infrared data of a sample of 11 barred spiral galaxies, in order to establish a connection between star formation and bar/spiral dynamics. We find that 22 regions located in the bars, and 20 regions in the spiral arms beyond the end of the bar present azimuthal color/age gradients that may be attributed to star formation triggering. Assuming a circular motion dynamic model, we compare the observed age gradient candidates with stellar populations synthesis models. A link can then be established with the disk dynamics that allows us to obtain parameters like the patte…
We apply the potential-density phase-shift method to 153 galaxies in the Ohio State University Bright Galaxy Survey (OSUBGS) to study the general relationship between pattern corotation radii and the morphology of spiral galaxies. The analysis is based on deprojected near-infrared H-band images. We find that multiple pattern speeds are common in disk galaxies. By selecting those corotation radii close to or slightly larger than the bar radius as being the bar corotation (CR) radius, we find that the average and standard deviation of the ratio R = r(CR)/r(bar), is 1.20+/-0.52 for 101 galaxies h…
A brief review is given of different methods used to determine the pattern speeds of the Galactic bar and spiral arms. The Galactic bar rotates rapidly, with corotation about halfway between the Galactic center and the Sun, and outer Lindblad resonance not far from the solar orbit, R0. The Galactic spiral arms currently rotate with a distinctly slower pattern speed, such that corotation is just outside R0. Both structures therefore seem dynamically decoupled.
We demonstrate the existence of a -local- relation between galaxy surface mass density, gas metallicity, and star-formation rate density using spatially-resolved optical spectroscopy of HII regions in the local Universe. One of the projections of this distribution, -the local mass-metallicity relation- extends over three orders of magnitude in galaxy mass density and a factor of eight in gas metallicity. We explain the new relation as the combined effect of the differential radial distributions of mass and metallicity in the discs of galaxies, and a selective star-formation efficiency. We use …
The Tremaine-Weinberg equations are solved for a pattern speed that is allowed to vary with radius. The solution method transforms an integral equation for the pattern speed to a least squares problem with well established procedures for statistical analysis. The method applied to the HI spiral pattern of the barred, grand-design galaxy NGC 1365 produced convincing evidence for a radial dependence in the pattern speed. The pattern speed behaves approximately as 1/r, and is very similar to the material speed. There are no clear indications of corotation or Lindblad resonances. Tests show that t…
We present the first systematic investigation into the metallicity gradients in galaxy close pairs. We determine the metallicity gradients for 8 galaxies in close pairs using HII region metallicities obtained with high signal-to-noise multi-slit observations with the Keck LRIS Spectrograph. We show that the metallicity gradients in close pairs are significantly shallower than gradients in isolated spiral galaxies such as the Milky Way, M83, and M101. These observations provide the first solid evidence that metallicity gradients in interacting galaxies are systematically different from metallic…
We present the first metallicity gradient measurement for a grand-design face-on spiral galaxy at z~1.5. This galaxy has been magnified by a factor of 22$\times$ by a massive, X-ray luminous galaxy cluster MACS\,J1149.5+2223 at z=0.544. Using the Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics aided integral field spectrograph OSIRIS on KECK II, we target the Halpha emission and achieve a spatial resolution of 0.1", corresponding to a source plane resolution of 170 pc. The galaxy has well-developed spiral arms and the nebular emission line dynamics clearly indicate a rotationally supported disk with V_{rot}/…
We have performed a series of chemodynamical simulations of barred disc galaxies. Our goal is to determine the physical processes responsible for the increase in the central gas-phase metallicity and of the central SFR observed in SDSS. We define a 2kpc diameter central aperture to approximate the integrated spectroscopic fibre measurements from the SDSS. The chemical evolution observed within this central region depends critically upon the relative size of the bar and the aperture, which evolves strongly with time. At t~0.5Gyr, a strong bar forms, whose length is considerably longer than the …
Azimuthal age/color gradients across spiral arms are a signature of long-lived spirals. From a sample of 19 normal (or weakly barred) spirals where we have previously found azimuthal age/color gradient candidates, 13 objects were further selected if a two-armed grand-design pattern survived in a surface density stellar mass map. Mass maps were obtained from optical and near-infrared imaging, by comparing with a Monte Carlo library of stellar population synthesis models that allowed us to obtain the mass-to-light ratio in the J band, (M/L)_J, as a function of (g-i) versus (i-J) color. The selec…
We analyse the oxygen abundance and specific star formation rates (sSFR) variations with redshift in star-forming SDSS galaxies of different masses. We find that the maximum value of the sSFR, sSFRmax, decreases when the stellar mass, Ms, of a galaxy increases, and decreases with decreasing of redshift. The sSFRmax can exceed the time-averaged sSFR by about an order of magnitude for massive galaxies. The metallicity - redshift relations for subsamples of galaxies with sSFR = sSFRmax and with sSFR = 0.1sSFRmax coincide for massive (log(Ms/Mo) > 10.5, with stellar mass Ms in solar units) galaxie…
We test whether the spiral patterns apparent in many large disk galaxies should be thought of as dynamical features that are stationary in a co-rotating frame for > t_{dyn}, as implied by the density wave approach for explaining spiral arms. If such spiral arms have enhanced star formation (SF), observational tracers for different stages of the SF sequence should show a spatial ordering, from up-stream to downstream in the corotating frame: dense HI, CO, tracing molecular hydrogen gas, 24 micron emission tracing enshrouded SF and UV emission tracing unobscured young stars. We argue that such a…
By means of chemical evolution models for ellipticals, spirals and irregular galaxies, we aim at investigating the physical meaning and the redshift evolution of the mass-metallicity relation as well as how this relation is connected with galaxy morphology. {abridged} We assume that galaxy morphologies do not change with cosmic time. We present a method to account for a spread in the epochs of galaxy formation and to refine the galactic mass grid. (abridged) We compare our predictions to observational results obtained for galaxies between redshifts 0.07 and 3.5. We reproduce the mass-metallici…
Using Herschel data from the Open Time Key Project the Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey (HeViCS), we investigated the relationship between the metallicity gradients expressed by metal abundances in the gas phase as traced by the chemical composition of HII regions, and in the solid phase, as traced by the dust-to-gas mass ratio. We derived the radial gradient of the dust-to-gas mass ratio for all galaxies observed by HeViCS whose metallicity gradients are available in the literature. They are all late type Sbc galaxies, namely NGC4254, NGC4303, NGC4321, and NGC4501. We examined different dependen…
Low resolution ESO VLT/FORS spectra of blue supergiant stars are analyzed to determine stellar metallicities (based on elements such as Fe, Ti, Mg) in the extended disk of the spiral galaxy NGC3621. Mildly subsolar metallicity (-0.30 dex) is found for the outer objects beyond 7 kpc independent of galactocentric radius and compatible with the absence of a metallicity gradient confirming the results of a recent investigation of interstellar medium HII region gas oxygen abundances. The stellar metallicities are slightly higher than those from the HII regions when based on measurements of the weak…
We seek to understand the origin of radial migration in spiral galaxies by analyzing in detail the structure and evolution of an idealized, isolated galactic disk. To understand the redistribution of stars, we characterize the time-evolution of properties of spirals that spontaneously form in the disk. Our models unambiguously show that in such disks, single spirals are unlikely, but that a number of transient patterns may coexist in the disk. However, we also show that while spirals are transient in amplitude, at any given time the disk favors patterns of certain pattern speeds. Using several…
We analyze the galactic H I content and nebular log(O/H) for 60 spiral galaxies in the Moustakas et al. (2006) spectral catalog. After correcting for the mass-metallicity relationship, we show that the spirals in cluster environments show a positive correlation for log(O/H) on DEF, the galactic H I deficiency parameter, extending the results of previous analyses of the Virgo and Pegasus I clusters. Additionally, we show for the first time that galaxies in the field obey a similar dependence. The observed relationship between H I deficiency and galactic metallicity resembles similar trends show…
In this series of papers, we propose a theory to explain the formation and properties of rings and spirals in barred galaxies. The building blocks of these structures are orbits guided by the manifolds emanating from the unstable Lagrangian points located near the ends of the bar. In this paper we focus on a comparison of the morphology of observed and of theoretical spirals and rings and we also give some predictions for further comparisons. Our theory can account for spirals as well as both inner and outer rings. The model outer rings have the observed $R_1$, $R_1'$, $R_2$, $R_2'$ and $R_1R_…
While it has long been known that a large number of short-lived transient spirals can cause stellar migration, here we report that another mechanism is also effective at mixing disks of barred galaxies. The resonance overlap of the bar and spiral structure induces a nonlinear response leading to a strong redistribution of angular momentum in the disk. We find that, depending on the amplitudes of the perturbers, the changes in angular momentum, dL, could occur up to an order of magnitude faster than in the case of recurrent spirals. The signature of this mechanism is a bimodality in dL with max…
Studies of outer regions of spirals disks are fundamental to our understanding of both the process of galaxy assembly and the subsequent secular evolution of galaxies. In an earlier series of papers we explored the extent and abundance gradient in the outer disk of NGC 300 and found an extended purely exponential disk with a metallicity gradient which flattens off in the outermost regions. We now continue the study of outskirts of pure disk spirals with another Sculptor Group spiral, NGC 7793. Using Gemini Multi Object Spectrograph camera at Gemini South, we trace the disk of NGC 7793 with sta…
Context: Several spiral galaxies, as beautifully exhibited by the case of NGC 6946, display a prominent large-scale spiral structure in their gaseous outer disk. Such structure is often thought to pose a dynamical puzzle, because grand-design spiral structure is traditionally interpreted as the result of density waves carried mostly in the stellar disk. Aims. Here we argue that the outer spiral arms in the cold gas outside the bright optical disk actually have a natural interpretation as the manifestation of the mechanism that excites grand-design spiral structure in the main, star-dominated b…
NGC 891 is a nearby edge-on galaxy that is similar to the Milky Way and has a hot X-ray emitting halo that could arise from accretion, a galactic fountain, or a combination of the two. The metallicity of the gas can help distinguish between these models, and here we report on results that use 138 ks of archival Chandra data and 92 ks of new XMM-Newton data to measure the temperature and metallicity of the hot halo of the galaxy. We find good fits for a thermal model with kT ~ 0.2 keV and Z ~ 0.1 solar, and rule out solar metallicity to more than 99% confidence. This result suggests accretion f…
